The Influence Of An Environmental Cue And Exercise On Food Consumption In College Students, Samantha J. Hackbart †, James D. Lecheminant‡, John D. Smith‡, Curt L. Lox‡

International Journal of Exercise Science

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of an environmental cue (bowl size) on food consumption and to examine the influence of exercise on that relationship. This cross-sectional study included 286 college students attending a large Midwestern University. Upon arrival at an ice cream social for university students, participants were randomly given a small (8 oz) or large (12 oz) bowl and a 4-page survey addressing exercise and eating habits. At the social, participants were invited to dish themselves as much ice cream as they wanted and the amount consumed was determined by weighing the bowl with …

Spatial And Feeding Ecology Of The Fer-De-Lance (Bothrops Asper) In Costa Rica, Dennis K. Wasko Apr 2009

Spatial And Feeding Ecology Of The Fer-De-Lance (Bothrops Asper) In Costa Rica, Dennis K. Wasko

Open Access Dissertations

Understanding the ways in which animals utilize space and obtain food are central themes in modern ecology. Formulating broad principles and elucidating the factors explaining such patterns are limited, however, by the availability of data from a broad range of species and systems. This problem especially true of snakes, a predator group about which even the most basic natural history data are often entirely lacking, even among abundant, widespread, and ecologically-important species. I studied the natural history and ecosystem role of one such species, the fer-de-lance (Bothrops asper) in lowland rainforest in Costa Rica. B. asper is a large, cryptic …

Switchgrass For Forage And Bioenergy: I. Effects Of Nitrogen Rate And Harvest System, Maru Kering, J. T. Biermacher, Billy Cook, John A. Guretzky

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) has been targeted for cellulosic ethanol production. Our objective was to evaluate effects of location, harvest system, and N fertilizer rates on switchgrass biomass yield and N, P, and K removal. Randomized complete block experiments with four replications were established on one-year old stands of ‘Alamo’ switchgrass at two Oklahoma locations in 2008. Harvest system and N rate interactions affected total annual yield. Biomass yields ranged from 9020 to 10530 kg/ha across harvest systems when no N was applied. With application of 179 kg N/ha, biomass yields averaged 10715, 13912, and 16516 kg/ha when harvested at …

Preventive Dental Services For Infants And Subsequent Utilization Of Dental Services, Elizabeth Berry

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the use of dental services for young children following a preventive oral health intervention in a pediatric medical clinic. Over a 3 year period (2005-2008), children 0-36 months of age, enrolled in Medicaid, were provided preventive oral health services in a medical setting. Descriptive statistics and multivariate logistic regression were used to determine the effect receiving the preventive oral health services in a medical setting with the outcomes of dental utilization. 15% were determined to have dental caries at the intervention and 42% found to have a dental visit post-intervention. Children determined …

The Preference Of Protein Powders Among Adult Males And Females: A Protein Powder Taste Study, Joshua Manter Apr 2009

The Preference Of Protein Powders Among Adult Males And Females: A Protein Powder Taste Study, Joshua Manter

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Protein is essential in one's diet because it is an important component in many organs and tissues throughout the body. Athletes ingest protein in order to stimulate protein synthesis and increase lean muscle mass. In order to assist with obtaining adequate amounts of protein, athletes and bodybuilders purchase supplemental protein in the form of protein powders. Protein metabolism and digestion play key roles in this because if the protein is not metabolized or digested effectively, then those who are wishing to gain fat free mass will not be successful. A high quality protein will be digested, metabolized, and directed towards …

Ultrasound Measurement Of The Inferior Vena Cava Diameter In The Assessment Of Pediatric Dehydration, Yunie Kim Apr 2009

Ultrasound Measurement Of The Inferior Vena Cava Diameter In The Assessment Of Pediatric Dehydration, Yunie Kim

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Dehydration is a common pediatric condition, but limitations exist with current methods of assessing pediatric fluid status, particularly with interobserver variabilities in clinical assessment and the inaccuracy and questionable validity of laboratory tests. Bedside ultrasonography (US) measurement of the inferior vena cava (IVC) and aorta (Ao) may be useful in objectively assessing children with suspected dehydration. The objectives of this study were 1) to compare the IVC and Ao diameter (IVC/Ao) ratio of dehydrated children with euvolemic controls and 2) to compare the IVC/Ao ratio before and after intravenous (IV) rehydration in children with clinical dehydration. This prospective observational study …

Participatory action research was the framework for the qualitative research methodology. Data are presented from various sources including extensive participant observation, field notes, in-depth interviews, and document review. The findings indicated diverse implications for the consideration of a school-community partnership, and highlighted the importance of organizational and …

Youth Leadership Development And Peer-Led Initiatives, Kathryn Conley Apr 2009

Youth Leadership Development And Peer-Led Initiatives, Kathryn Conley

Theses and Dissertations

The current study explored the experiences of high school peer leaders (N = 45) chosen to participate in an eight-week peer-led tobacco intervention program, Living Free of Tobacco, Plus! (LIFT+). The study used a repeated measures design to examine changes in leadership self-efficacy, perceived leadership skill, and goal-setting from baseline to post-test. Leaders’ susceptibility to future tobacco use, self-efficacy to resist and avoid tobacco, and confidence and interest in following nutritional guidelines were also examined at two time points. To strengthen self-report measures, peer and teacher evaluations of observed leadership behavior were collected. Results suggest that participation as a peer-leader …

Activation Of Nr2b And Autophagy Signaling Pathways Following Traumatic Brain Injury, Gregory E. Bigford Apr 2009

Activation Of Nr2b And Autophagy Signaling Pathways Following Traumatic Brain Injury, Gregory E. Bigford

Open Access Dissertations

Hyper-activation of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NRs) is associated with excitotoxic cell death during secondary injury following traumatic brain injury (TBI). The efficiency of the NR is dependent on the location of receptors in membrane raft microdomains that provide a platform for coupling of NRs and effector proteins. In many neurodegenerative diseases, activation of the autophagy pathway has been suggested to contribute to glutamate excitotoxicity, but whether increased autophagy signaling contributes to pathology after TBI has not been defined. In these studies, I investigate whether membrane rafts mediate NR signaling and autophagy in cortices of adult male rats subjected to moderate TBI …

Language Modeling Approaches To Information Retrieval, Protima Banerjee, Hyoil Han Apr 2009

Language Modeling Approaches To Information Retrieval, Protima Banerjee, Hyoil Han

Computer Sciences and Electrical Engineering Faculty Research

This article surveys recent research in the area of language modeling (sometimes called statistical language modeling) approaches to information retrieval. Language modeling is a formal probabilistic retrieval framework with roots in speech recognition and natural language processing. The underlying assumption of language modeling is that human language generation is a random process; the goal is to model that process via a generative statistical model.

In this article, we discuss current research in the application of language modeling to information retrieval, the role of semantics in the language modeling framework, cluster-based language models, use of language modeling for XML retrieval and …

Personal And Societal Health Quality Lost To Tuberculosis, Thaddeus L. Miller, Peter E. Hilsenrath, Scott J. N. Mcnabb, Jotam G. Pasipanodya, Stephen E. Weis Apr 2009

Personal And Societal Health Quality Lost To Tuberculosis, Thaddeus L. Miller, Peter E. Hilsenrath, Scott J. N. Mcnabb, Jotam G. Pasipanodya, Stephen E. Weis

Eberhardt School of Business Faculty Articles

Background: In developed countries, tuberculosis is considered a disease with little loss of Quality-Adjusted Life Years (QALYs). Tuberculosis treatment is predominantly ambulatory and death from tuberculosis is rare. Research has shown that there are chronic pulmonary sequelae in a majority of patients who have completed treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB). This and other health effects of tuberculosis have not been considered in QALY calculations. Consequently both the burden of tuberculosis on the individual and the value of tuberculosis prevention to society are underestimated. We estimated QALYs lost to pulmonary TB patients from all known sources, and estimated health loss to …

The Plight Of The Roma In Italy: Human Rights Injustices Of A Feared Minority, Alexandra Errante

Global Studies Student Scholarship

Human rights is unique in that it has a universal affect on everyone world-wide no matter his or her nationality, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs or economic standing. In order to narrow this down, the intention of this thesis is to explore a specific topic in regards to the overlying issue of human rights. This thesis provides evidence of the mistreatment and blatant racism that is inflicted upon the Roma living in Italy and this paper makes the claim that this is the fault of the Italian government. The methodology used for the community engagement portion of the thesis …
