The Effect Of Retirement On Vigorous Physical Activity Controlling For The Socio-Demographic Variables Of Age, Gender, Education, Income, Race And Perceived Health Status Affect, Jayme D. Nekuda
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Health and Retirement Study data was used to examine the relationship between retirement and vigorous physical activity. The independent variables studied were vigorous physical activity in 1998 (T1) and retirement status in 2000 (T2). The dependent variable was vigorous physical activity in 2000 (T2). The entire sample consisted of 5,351 respondents who were in the workforce in 1998 (T1). In 2000 (T2), 4,449 reported still being in the workforce while 902 reported having retired between T1 and T2. The affect was controlled by the covariates of age, gender, education, income, race and perceived health status. These covariates together predicted approximately …

Structural And Functional Considerations In The Design Of Collagen-Based Electrospun Scaffolds, Chantal Ayres
Structural And Functional Considerations In The Design Of Collagen-Based Electrospun Scaffolds, Chantal Ayres
Theses and Dissertations
Electrospinning can be used to selectively process a variety of natural and synthetic polymers into highly porous scaffolds composed of nano-to-micron diameter fibers. This process shows great potential as a gateway to the development of physiologically relevant tissue engineering scaffolds. In this study we examine the structural and functional considerations regarding electrospun scaffolds for dermal template applications using novel quantification techniques. In order to characterize scaffold structure, a technique utilizing the fast Fourier transform was developed to systematically quantify fiber alignment and evaluate how different electrospinning parameters impact the structure and material properties of an electrospun scaffold. Gelatin was suspended …

Health Disparities For Adults With Developmental Disabilities: Exploration Of Health Promotion Services, Systems And Strategies., Mary Thelander Hill, Teresa Esquerra, Betsey Vanleit, Leslie Hoelzel, Robert Hobbs
Occupational Therapy
Using a Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) approach, the project partners worked to clarify the health promotion needs of adults with developmental disabilities, identify strengths and weaknesses of the current system, and develop an action plan. Through this action plan, community agencies and therapists would become empowered to address needs, build ongoing community capacity to respond to emergent health/wellness needs, and advocate for appropriate systems of care.
Sorghum Grain Mold: Sustainable Pest Management Strategies, Intsormil
Sorghum Grain Mold: Sustainable Pest Management Strategies, Intsormil
INTSORMIL Impacts and Bulletins
Global losses due to grain mold are estimated to be $130 million annually. Sorghum grain mold is caused by a complex of fungal species, the most important being Fusarium thapsinum and Curvularia lunata. An additional 25 fungal genera are secondary invaders. Grain mold reduces the quantity of food available, as the fungus consumes a portion of the grain, and reduces the quality and economic value of what remains by producing pigments and toxins that make the grain less palatable and nutritious. Fusarium spp. and the secondarily invading Aspergillus spp. may produce toxins such as aflatoxins (a highly carcinogenic and …

Stratified Neighborhoods, Stratified Schools: Intradistrict Transfer And Racial And Socioeconomic Stratification, Elisabeth Stuart Larsen
Stratified Neighborhoods, Stratified Schools: Intradistrict Transfer And Racial And Socioeconomic Stratification, Elisabeth Stuart Larsen
Theses and Dissertations
Intra-district transfer policies allow students to attend any school within a district and thus may have unique consequences for stratification within a district. If parents make choices based on common academic interests, this policy can create racial and socioeconomic integration across the schools in a district. However, socially motivated choices may lead to the creation of increasingly stratified zones. This study examines one urban school district with an intra-district transfer policy to examine if the schools in the district become more racially and economically stratified under the choice policy and if the level of stratification at family's zoned schools is …

The Role Of Connexin-36 Gap Junctions In Alcohol Intoxication And Reward, Kathryn Diane Bradley
The Role Of Connexin-36 Gap Junctions In Alcohol Intoxication And Reward, Kathryn Diane Bradley
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis project was to examine the function of connexin-36 (Cx36) gap junctions (GJs) in producing alcohol's intoxicating and rewarding effects. GABA neurons are thought to inhibit dopamine (DA) neurotransmission in the mesocorticolimbic system, which originates in the midbrain ventral tegmental area (VTA) and projects to limbic structures such as the nucleus accumbens (NAcc). The mesolimbic DA system is believed to be the neural substrate of alcohol intoxication and addiction (Tepper, Paladini, & Celada, 1998). Alcohol suppresses the firing rate of GABA neurons in the VTA (Gallegos, Criado, Lee, Henriksen, & Steffensen, 1999) and presumably disinhibits DA …
