The state of Georgia continues to struggle with the large amount of people who lack the ability to obtain healthcare when needed. Over a million Georgians have no health insurance, and face a variety of barriers to receiving healthcare. There are many layers to Georgia’s safety net, where each clinic provides primary care in certain areas to a specific population in need. One active member in Georgia’s safety net clinic system is The Good Samaritan Health Center, a privately funded, not for profit 501 (c) 3 organization. The center provides dependable, full-time healthcare for Atlanta’s indigent, working poor, uninsured, and …

Developmental Emergence Of Power-Law Wake Behavior Depends Upon The Functional Integrity Of The Locus Coeruleus, Andrew J. Gall, Badal Joshi, Janet Best, Virginia R. Florang, Jonathan A. Doorn, Mark S. Blumberg Jul 2009

Developmental Emergence Of Power-Law Wake Behavior Depends Upon The Functional Integrity Of The Locus Coeruleus, Andrew J. Gall, Badal Joshi, Janet Best, Virginia R. Florang, Jonathan A. Doorn, Mark S. Blumberg

Faculty Publications

STUDY OBJECTIVES:

Daily amounts of sleep and wakefulness are accumulated in discrete bouts that exhibit distinct statistical properties. In adult mammals, sleep bout durations follow an exponential distribution whereas wake bout durations follow a power-law distribution. In infant Norway rats, however, wake bouts initially follow an exponential distribution and only transition to a power-law distribution beginning around postnatal day 15 (P15). Here we test the hypothesis that the locus coeruleus (LC), one of several wake-active nuclei in the brainstem, contributes to this developmental transition.

DESIGN:

At P7, rats were injected subcutaneously with saline or DSP-4, a neurotoxin that targets noradrenergic …

Pines And The Ecology Of Carnaby‘S Black-Cockatoos (Calyptorhynchus Latirostris) In The Gnangara Sustainability Strategy Area, Hugh Finn, William Stock, Leonie Valentine

Research outputs pre 2011

This study examined the behavioural ecology of Carnaby‘s Black-Cockatoo in the Gnangara Sustainability Strategy study area, with a focus on habitat use of pine plantations. The study confirms that the pine is the main food source for Carnaby‘s Black-Cockatoos within the GSS area during the non-breeding season (January-June). The value of the Gnangara-Pinjar-Yanchep pine plantations as a food source for Carnaby‘s Black-Cockatoo should not be underestimated. Large congregations of birds (~3000) utilised the pine plantations for an extended period, mainly January-March but with birds continuing to feeding within the plantations through June. The pine plantations have provided an important and …

The Impacts Of Biofuels On Transportation And Logistics In Indiana, Frank Dooley, Wallace Tyner, Kumares C. Sinha, Justin Quear, Lydia Cox, Maria Cox

JTRP Technical Reports

Like the rest of the US, the ethanol industry in Indiana has rapidly expanded, growing from one plant in 2006 to a projected 13 by 2010. One result of this expansion is that truck and rail traffic flows in Indiana are shifting, as more corn and beans are processed in state. Most of the change in transportation requirements will likely be concentrated in regions of Indiana where the ethanol plants are constructed.

The goal of this work was to determine how the entry of ethanol and biodiesel plants changes the inbound and outbound transportation flows of corn, soybeans, DDGS, and …

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

This paper describes the completion of a "comprehensive study of regionalism" that was conducted by a joint team of economists and economic development specialists for the Economic Development Administration (EDA). The project consisted of two main activities: an examination of the factors associated with economic development success and the creation of a practical interactive tool for EDA project assessment and comparison. Findings from surveys, interviews, and project case studies are discussed in terms of their support for a positive relationship between successful economic development efforts and factors such as leadership and private investment. Also, the authors discuss the creation of …

Visions/Versions Of The Medieval In C.S. Lewis’S The Chronicles Of Narnia, Heather Herrick Jennings

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

“Everything in the whole story should arise from the whole cast of the author’s mind. We must write for children out of those elements in our own imagination which we share with children: differing from our child readers not by any less, or less serious, interest in the things we handle, but by the fact that we have other interests which children would not share with us. The matter of our story should be a part of the habitual furniture of our minds.” —C.S. Lewis, “On Three Ways of Writing for Children”

Deep-Sea Coral Reefs: Distribution, Ecology And Anthropogenic Impacts, Victoria Oakham Jul 2009

Deep-Sea Coral Reefs: Distribution, Ecology And Anthropogenic Impacts, Victoria Oakham

The Plymouth Student Scientist

The introduction of Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) and manned submersibles has meant scientists can finally begin study deep-water scleractinian coral reefs, making valuable first-hand observations of the reefs themselves and their associated fauna. Known influences of deepwater coral reef distribution include the topography of the seabed, presence of currents, high nutrient levels and low sedimentation levels. Chemical tolerances (such as salinity, temperature range and calcium carbonate availability) are mostly known for only Lophelia pertusa corals. Debates exist within literature over the possible influence of hydrocarbon seeps from the seabed on coral reef growth and distribution. Studies show the importance of …

Body Mass Changes And Voluntary Fluid Intakes Of Keelboat Sailors, Samantha Norman Jul 2009

Body Mass Changes And Voluntary Fluid Intakes Of Keelboat Sailors, Samantha Norman

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Match racing is a highly competitive and physically demanding type of keelboat racing which requires each person on board to have a specific job. There is little time for breaks to re-stock on fluid and nutrients lost, even when out training, therefore performance may be affected. The aim of this study is to see if keelboat sailors are adequately hydrated for sailing. 36 volunteers (30 males and 6 females) from the University of Plymouth Yacht Club match racing team took part in the study on four different occasions. Body mass and fluid intake was measured pre and post sailing as …
