Escherichia Coli O157:H7 And Other E. Coli Strains Share Physiological Properties Associated With Intestinal Colonization, Lisa Jacobsen, Lisa Durso, Tyrell Conway, Kenneth W. Nickerson

Kenneth Nickerson Papers

Escherichia coli isolates (72 commensal and 10 O157:H7 isolates) were compared with regard to physiological and growth parameters related to their ability to survive and persist in the gastrointestinal tract and found to be similar. We propose that nonhuman hosts in E. coli O157:H7 strains function similarly to other E. coli strains in regard to attributes relevant to gastrointestinal colonization.

Complexity, Cofactors, And The Failure Of Aids Policy In Africa, Eileen Stillwaggon Jul 2009

Complexity, Cofactors, And The Failure Of Aids Policy In Africa, Eileen Stillwaggon

Economics Faculty Publications

Global AIDS policy still treats HIV as an exceptional case, abstracting from the context in which infection occurs. Policy is based on a simplistic theory of HIV causation, and evaluated using outdated tools of health economics. Recent calls for a health systems strategy – preventing and treating HIV within a programme of comprehensive health care – have not yet influenced the silo approach of AIDS policy.

Evidence continues to accumulate, showing that multiple factors, such as malnutrition, malaria and helminthes, increase the risk of sexual and vertical transmission of HIV. Moreover, complementary interventions that reduce viral load, improve immune response, …

Which Assessments And Interventions Do Physiotherapists Value In The Management Of Adults With Cystic Fibrosis In Australia?, Kathy Stiller, Dianne White, Marie Williams

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: Evidence based practice involves the integration of three main components: best available research evidence, practitioner’s clinical expertise, and patient’s preferences. While the effectiveness of physiotherapy interventions for patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) has been extensively studied, no studies have explored physiotherapists’ perceptions and values concerning their management of patients with CF. The aim of this study was to document the opinions and values that CF physiotherapists in Australia have regarding their management of patients with CF. Method: A purpose-designed questionnaire addressing these issues was mailed to all 38 physiotherapists working with adults with CF on a regular/frequent basis in …

Nonparametric Estimation Of A Polarization Measure, Gordon J. Anderson, Oliver B. Linton, Yoon-Jae Whang Jul 2009

Nonparametric Estimation Of A Polarization Measure, Gordon J. Anderson, Oliver B. Linton, Yoon-Jae Whang

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper develops methodology for nonparametric estimation of a polarization measure due to Anderson (2004) and Anderson, Ge, and Leo (2006) based on kernel estimation techniques. We give the asymptotic distribution theory of our estimator, which in some cases is nonstandard due to a boundary value problem. We also propose a method for conducting inference based on estimation of unknown quantities in the limiting distribution and show that our method yields consistent inference in all cases we consider. We investigate the finite sample properties of our methods by simulation methods. We give an application to the study of polarization within …

Hiv And Condoms Within Marriage, Most Rev Anthony Fisher Jul 2009

Hiv And Condoms Within Marriage, Most Rev Anthony Fisher

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

In this essay I revisit the issue of whether an agency or a professional, including doctors, nurses, pastors, counselors and educators, may assist the condomizing of intercourse – as I will call it for short – in order to reduce HIV transmission within marriage. There are parallel but also distinct arguments to be made outside of marriage, e.g. in homosexual intercourse. There are also many ways to ‘assist’. Most Catholic agencies will not actually distribute condoms. But may they take part in an ‘ABC’ program which promotes ‘A’ for Abstinence, ‘B’ for Be Faithful to one’s spouse (what I call …

The fatty acid (FA) composition of cultured finfish can be tailored by transitioning fish reared on alternative lipid-based, low long-chain polyunsaturated FA (LC-PUFA) content grow-out feeds to high LC-PUFA finishing feeds based on fish oil (FO) before harvest. To determine whether the FA composition of the grow-out feed influences finishing success in Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus, coconut (CO), grapeseed (GO), linseed (LO), and poultry (PO) oils were evaluated in grow-out feeds with respect to production performance and responsiveness to finishing. The production performance of Nile tilapia was unaffected by application of the various feeding regimes, indicating that this species …

Multilayered Governance, Pluralism, And Moral Conflict, Thomas Cottier Jul 2009

Multilayered Governance, Pluralism, And Moral Conflict, Thomas Cottier

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

The quest for multilayered governance faces the problem of endemic tensions and disagreements in international relations and doubts as to whether nations truly share common values upon which an international society can be solidly built. Values, however, are equally controversial within the nation-state. We find similar tensions within domestic and regional layers of governance. In any system of governance, diverging and competing values are inevitable. There are differences in degree, but not in principle, when comparing traits of domestic and international governance. Legal experience in the fields of human rights and international trade regulation indicates that under such conditions, procedures …

Korean Church Planters’ Perception On Church Planting Education, Hansung Kim Jul 2009

Korean Church Planters’ Perception On Church Planting Education, Hansung Kim

Great Commission Research Journal

This study seeks to understand how Korean church planters perceive the church planting education that they received. This study employs the qualitative approach, which uses words and open-ended questions to explore and understand the meaning that individuals or groups ascribe to a social or human problem. To collect data, I interviewed nine church planters. I analyzed, interpreted, and wrote data as soon as possible. In addition, I collected other data. I also compared different data with each other to generate categories, and it was done consistently. The followings are the findings. While their passion for church planting was great and …

Conflict Of Laws (2009), Stephanie K. Marshall, Wm Frank Carroll, James P. George

Faculty Scholarship

States' and nations' laws collide when foreign factors appear in a lawsuit. Nonresident litigants, incidents outside the forum, parallel lawsuits, and judgments from other jurisdictions can create problems with personal jurisdiction, choice of law, and the recognition of foreign judgments. This article reviews Texas conflicts cases from Texas state and federal courts during the Survey period from October 1, 2007, through September 30, 2008. The article excludes cases involving federal-state conflicts, intrastate issues such as subject matter jurisdiction and venue, and conflicts in time, such as the applicability of prior or subsequent law within a state. State and federal cases …

Politics, Policies, And Poverty In Latin America, Jennifer Pribble, Evelyne Huber, John D. Stephens Jul 2009

Politics, Policies, And Poverty In Latin America, Jennifer Pribble, Evelyne Huber, John D. Stephens

Political Science Faculty Publications

Why do Latin American countries exhibit stark differences in their ability to protect citizens from falling into poverty? Analysis of poverty levels measured by ECLAC in eighteen countries shows that political factors-including the democratic record, long-term weight of left-of-center parties in the legislature, and investment in human capital-are significant and substantively important determinants of poverty. These findings contribute to the growing literature that emphasizes the importance of regime form, parties, and policies for a variety of outcomes in Latin America, despite the weaknesses of democracy and the pathologies of some parties and party systems in the region.

Assessing Legal Competencies For Obesity Prevention And Control, Wendy Collins Perdue Jul 2009

Assessing Legal Competencies For Obesity Prevention And Control, Wendy Collins Perdue

Law Faculty Publications

Obesity is the result of people consistently consuming more calories than they expend. A complex interaction of social and environmental conditions affects both energy consumption and physical activity levels. Health professionals who understand the social and environmental factors related to obesity risk may find it challenging to identify, understand, or develop a strategy to improve the vast array of laws that play a role in shaping our environment and behaviors.

Competency in the use of laws and legal authorities is one of the four core elements of public health legal preparedness. Legal competency" is a particularly important component of a …

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

The challenges facing the nursing home industry are increasingly important to the population of the United States. As the population grows older, the number of people that will require services from a nursing home will increase. In today's environment the nursing home business is facing many challenges that will define the future of the industry. Among them is the plaintiff attorney lawsuit against nursing homes, rising liability costs and vulnerability to lawsuits. A reduction in liability claims should allow nursing homes in Florida to remain solvent and stay in business to take care of those who cannot take care of …
