Background: Arterial aging is well characterized in industrial populations, but scantly described in populations with little access to modern medicine. Here we characterize health and aging among the Tsimane, Amazonian forager-horticulturalists with short life expectancy, high infectious loads and inflammation, but low adiposity and robust physical fitness. Inflammation has been implicated in all stages of arterial aging, atherogenesis and hypertension, and so we test whether greater inflammation associates with atherosclerosis and CVD risk. In contrast, moderate to vigorous daily activity, minimal obesity, and low fat intake predict minimal CVD risk among older Tsimane.
Methods and Findings: Peripheral arterial …
Bridging Digital Poverty: Adoption Of Information And Communication Technologies At Community Technology Centers In The Dominican Republic, Paola Prado
Open Access Dissertations
Globalization and the rise of the Information Society pose many challenges to developing nations. In adherence to the Millennium Development Goal of digital inclusion, the government of the Dominican Republic established a national program of community technology centers, or telecenters, that aim to promote digital literacy among the poor. This study examined how these telecenters promote the adoption of information and communication technologies (ICTs) and tested whether perceived structural factors, individual motivation or demographics predict adoption. Results from a survey conducted in the rural villages of El Seybo, Navarrete, and Oviedo confirm that telecenter users learn how to use information …

The Relationship Between Economic Deprivation And Emerging Inhibitory Control In Young Children, Rachel Weston
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ECONOMIC DEPRIVATION AND EMERGING INHIBITORY CONTROL IN YOUNG CHILDREN. Rachel S. Weston, David J. Bridgett, Linda C. Mayes. Yale Child Study Center, Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, CT. An extensive body of research has documented detrimental effects of growing up in poverty on children's global cognitive development, particularly when economic deprivation occurs in early childhood. However, little is known about the impact of poverty on children's component neurocognitive capacities. The prefrontal cortex is one brain region, responsible for the executive control functions, that has a prolonged period of postnatal development and therefore may be especially …

Stable Carbon Isotope And Niche Breadth Analysis Of Animal Bone From Pocahontas Mounds (22hi500) And Lyon's Bluff, Robert Linder Mccain
Stable Carbon Isotope And Niche Breadth Analysis Of Animal Bone From Pocahontas Mounds (22hi500) And Lyon's Bluff, Robert Linder Mccain
Theses and Dissertations
Maize uses a photosynthetic pathway called C4 which produces a carbon signature in animal tissue that is different from most of the plants available to the inhabitants of the Southeastern United States. Faunal remains (deer, rodent, and turtle) from Pocahontas Mounds (22HI500) and Lyon’s Bluff (22OK520) were tested to determine whether the samples possessed a C4 signature. Maize has been found at both sites, but the extent of maize agriculture was not known. Rodent and turtle from both sites indicate partial to heavy consumption of C4 plants, while one deer sample from Pocahontas indicates moderate consumption of C4 plants. The …
Examining The Self-Reported Health Behaviors And The Importance Of Role Modeling Among Resident Directors Affiliated With The Association Of College And University Housing Officers-International (Acuho-I) Institutions, Maylen Lizeth Aldana
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine self-reported health behaviors (health responsibility, physical activity, nutrition, spiritual growth, interpersonal relations and stress management) of Resident Directors who self-reported being affiliated with ACUHO-I. The second purpose of the study was to examine which areas of health behaviors, do Resident Directors believe, their participation influences the health behaviors of their students. This was completed by inviting Resident Directors to complete the Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile II (HPLPII). A total of (n=308) Resident Directors completed the HPLPII. The results of this study are ground breaking because it is the first study examining the …
Spatial Dispersion Of The Fungus Aspergillus Flavus In Corn Ears: A Spatial Analysis Of Ubiquitin Mrna, Leif Saxon Mylroie
Spatial Dispersion Of The Fungus Aspergillus Flavus In Corn Ears: A Spatial Analysis Of Ubiquitin Mrna, Leif Saxon Mylroie
Theses and Dissertations
Aflatoxin is a carcinogen produced by the fungus Aspergillus flavus that causes millions of dollars in agriculture losses in the southeastern US. This thesis examines the dispersal of A. flavus on two corn inbred lines, resistant (Mp313E) and susceptible (B73), which differ in total aflatoxin accumulation after infection with A. flavus. After inoculating corn kernels with the fungus an RNA analysis was used to determine the location (number of kernels away from inoculation site) and abundance of A. flavus at weekly intervals. A. flavus started its spread at 7 days after inoculation (DAI) on both corn lines. The B73 corn …
Sanitization Of Broiler Breeder Hatching Eggs Using Ultraviolet Light And Hydrogen Peroxide, Jessica Benoit Wells
Sanitization Of Broiler Breeder Hatching Eggs Using Ultraviolet Light And Hydrogen Peroxide, Jessica Benoit Wells
Theses and Dissertations
Ultraviolet light (UV) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) decrease eggshell bacteria. However, when combined, the optimum amount of each and effects on hatchability are unknown. In Experiment 1, when compared to other concentrations of H2O2 and lengths of UV, the combination of 1.5% H2O2 and 8 minutes of UV yielded optimum results with a 3 log10 CFU/egg reduction in bacteria on the eggshell. In Experiment 2, exposing eggs to this optimum combination yielded a 1000 fold reduction in eggshell bacteria but only a numerical increase in hatch of set and hatch of fertile. In Experiment 3, eggs exposed to repetitive treatments …
The Ecology Of Cactoblastis Cactorum (Berg) (Lepidoptera:Pyralidae) In Florida, Kristen Erica Sauby
The Ecology Of Cactoblastis Cactorum (Berg) (Lepidoptera:Pyralidae) In Florida, Kristen Erica Sauby
Theses and Dissertations
I used a theoretical model to determine the conditions under which Cactoblastis cactorum populations would be expected to experience positive population growth. Results from simulations suggest that host species richness, host quality, and the C. cactorum death rate interact to determine the probability of C. cactorum positive population growth. I also studied the influence of host diversity empirically. Cactoblastis cactorum prevalence was significantly higher when O. stricta was present in the community. Also, higher species richness within host assemblages led to a higher prevalence of infestation than in single-species host assemblages. Finally, I explored cooccurrence patterns of native cactuseeding insects …
Using Remote Sensing To Monitor Herbicide Injury And Biomass Of Waterhyacinth, Wilfredo Robles
Using Remote Sensing To Monitor Herbicide Injury And Biomass Of Waterhyacinth, Wilfredo Robles
Theses and Dissertations
Aquatic vegetation plays an important role in the ecological interactions and processes within a water body. However, the presence of the invasive exotic aquatic plant species, waterhyacinth [Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms], negatively affects those interactions as well as interfering with water use for recreation and navigation. An implemented management plan for waterhyacinth control relies on the use of herbicides. Efficacy is commonly assessed using visual injury and control ratings as well as estimating biomass. The problem is that those approaches are labor intensive only assessing single points throughout the entire water body. Therefore, technology like remote sensing, which is the …

Social Determinants Of Mixed Feeding Behavior Among Hiv-Infected Mothers In Jos, Nigeria, Sheela Maru
Social Determinants Of Mixed Feeding Behavior Among Hiv-Infected Mothers In Jos, Nigeria, Sheela Maru
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Mixed feeding confers excess risk of mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) compared with exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) and exclusive formula feeding (EFF). We undertook a quantitative and qualitative cross-sectional survey to identify the social determinants of mixed feeding among a subset of HIV-infected women enrolled in a MTCT prevention program in Jos, Nigeria. Of the 91 participants, 68(75%) exclusively formula fed, 7(8%) exclusively breastfed, and 16(18%) practiced mixed feeding. Of the mixed feeding women, 7 primarily formula fed and 9 primarily breastfed. Women who primarily formula fed described family pressure as the reason for mixed feeding, whereas women …
