Perceptions And Misperceptions Of Health Among Different Groups In The United States, Katherine Bass
Perceptions And Misperceptions Of Health Among Different Groups In The United States, Katherine Bass
Economics ETDs
The prevalence of unhealthy habits and behaviors is undeniably felt and seen here in United States. Smoking and obesity are the two leading preventable causes of death today. The economic and societal costs are too high for such a preventable problem. The associated diseases and illnesses that stem from them account for billions of dollars in medical expenditures as well as billions more in lost productivity. This paper explores the degree to which people in different groups account for poor health habits on their health status. Using data from the National Health Interview Survey, the self reported health status was …

Dissecting Disgust : An Investigation Of The Validity Of The Three Domain Disgust Scale, Joshua Tybur
Dissecting Disgust : An Investigation Of The Validity Of The Three Domain Disgust Scale, Joshua Tybur
Psychology ETDs
Research on the emotion disgust, and particularly individual differences in disgust sensitivity, has exploded in the past 15 years. However, most of this research has been based on outdated theory and poorly designed instruments. Tybur et al., (2009) suggested that past theoretical perspectives on disgust should best be updated in light of an evolutionary perspective, and measurement of disgust sensitivity should be developed based on an evolutionarily informed theory. After suggesting that disgust should be categorized along domains related to pathogens, sexuality, and morality, they introduced the Three Domain Disgust Scale, a new measure of individual differences in disgust sensitivity. …

Validation Of Improved Hardware And Software For Expired Gas Analysis Indirect Calorimetry, Doyeon Kim
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
The purpose of this investigation was to validate a new system of breath-by-breath expired gas analysis to both an artificial working model of lung ventilation and gas exchange as well as to the Douglas bag technique. In addition, comparisons will be made between expired fractions, ventilation, and computations of VO2, VCO2, and RER between the new system and a commercial mixing chamber system (ParvoMedics) for repeated measurements at rest, steady state and non-steady state cycle ergometry exercise. Post acquisition processing involved custom developed software (LabVIEW), where time to gas equilibration within the mixing bag was determined, as well as differences …
The Necessity Of "Conflict Transformation" In Approaches To Psychosocial Interventions, Kay Naito
The Necessity Of "Conflict Transformation" In Approaches To Psychosocial Interventions, Kay Naito
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This theoretical study examines the psychosocial discourse in humanitarian aid. International humanitarian assistance through psychosocial interventions is now common in complex emergencies – the context that emerges from war and violent conflict that is unique to the contemporary era of globalization. Humanitarian assistance aims to meet the needs of war-affected communities, alleviate suffering, remove barriers to health and development, quell cycles of violence, work towards long-term benefits, and maintain the core principle of 'do no harm' at the center of its moral intentions. Lively ethical, medical and cultural debates have contributed to the development of a wide range of different …
Comparing The Effectiveness Of Hantavirus Outreach In Northwestern New Mexico, Panama, And Chile, Marjorie Mcconnell
Comparing The Effectiveness Of Hantavirus Outreach In Northwestern New Mexico, Panama, And Chile, Marjorie Mcconnell
Sociology ETDs
This research compared the effectiveness of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome prevention outreach in northwestern New Mexico, the Los Santos region of Panama, and Region Araucania IX in Chile. Outreach effectiveness for hantavirus is not well understood, even though outreach in Chile appears to be more extensive than in northwestern New Mexico and Panama. Understanding the role of human demographics, disease ecology, and subsequent human behavior in the disease process is critical to the examination of community responses in terms of behavior changes. Through the implementation of a self administered 28 question survey instrument (n=601), I measured attitudes towards, and across public …
Identification And Manipulation Of Resistance To Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus Derived From Solanum Peruvianum, Luis F. Gordillo Jr.
Identification And Manipulation Of Resistance To Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus Derived From Solanum Peruvianum, Luis F. Gordillo Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
The domesticated tomato Solanum lycopersicum (L.), formerly known as Lycopersicon esculentum is a genetically well-studied crop species with high-density linkage and molecular maps based on crosses done between cultivated tomato and its distant related wild species. Wild tomato species harbor a wealth of resistance to many pathogens that have been introgressed into domesticated tomato for genetic control of diseases and pests and for improvement of many agronomic traits. The wild tomato S. peruvianum (L.) is the source of the Sw-5 gene, characterized and mapped to chromosome 9 of the tomato genome and introgressed into elite tomato germplasm, providing resistance to …

The Role Of Porphyromonas Gingivalis Lysine Specific Protease, Kgp In Hemin Transport And Pigment Accumulation, Anuj Phull
Theses and Dissertations
Porphyromonas gingivalis, a gram-negative anaerobic bacterium, is implicated as a major etiological agent in the initiation and progression of severe forms of periodontal disease. It has been reported that gingivitis and periodontal disease affect roughly 50.3% and 35% of the adult population, respectively. Therefore, approximately over 85% of the adult population may suffer from some form of gingival disease. Porphyromonas gingivalis, an established periodontopathogen, requires hemin for growth. Although multiple hemin uptake systems appear to be present in this organism, their specific role in hemin uptake and virulence remains unknown. Pigmentation is thought to result from the accumulation of iron …
A Randomized Trial Of A Dissonance-Induction Intervention To Decrease Tanning Behaviors Among College Females, Sari R. Chait
A Randomized Trial Of A Dissonance-Induction Intervention To Decrease Tanning Behaviors Among College Females, Sari R. Chait
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Sun exposure is implicated in the majority of skin cancer cases so it is important to identify interventions that successfully decrease young people's tanning behaviors and increase their sun protection behaviors. Research suggests that interventions that focus on the more immediate appearance related effects of tanning, rather than on future health risks, may be more effective in altering UV-related behaviors. Dissonance induction is a strategy that has been used to successfully alter other health-related behaviors. This study sought to determine if a dissonance induction intervention might be similarly successful in changing UV-related behaviors. The study yielded mixed findings. Relative to …

Combinational Mixtures Of Multiparameter Distributions, Valeria Edefonti, Giovanni Parmigiani
Combinational Mixtures Of Multiparameter Distributions, Valeria Edefonti, Giovanni Parmigiani
Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers
We introduce combinatorial mixtures - a flexible class of models for inference on mixture distributions whose component have multidimensional parameters. The key idea is to allow each element of the component-specific parameter vectors to be shared by a subset of other components. This approach allows for mixtures that range from very flexible to very parsimonious, and unifies inference on component-specific parameters with inference on the number of components. We develop Bayesian inference and computation approaches for this class of distributions, and illustrate them in an application. This work was originally motivated by the analysis of cancer subtypes: in terms of …

Do You See What I See? : Making The Invisible Visible Through An Exploration Of The Intersubjective Experience Of Social Work Clinicians Working With Fat Clients, Lauren Polly Hanson
Do You See What I See? : Making The Invisible Visible Through An Exploration Of The Intersubjective Experience Of Social Work Clinicians Working With Fat Clients, Lauren Polly Hanson
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This qualitative study was designed with flexible research methods to explore experiences of clinical social workers in sitting with and developing relationships with fat clients. Using an intersubjective theoretical lens, this research investigates clinicians' countertransference or beliefs about fatness in the relationship building process with fat clients. An analysis of the literature revealed multiple meanings for fat, complex dynamics in therapeutic relationships and potential parallels between some racial oppressions and fat oppression using the concept of visible difference. This exploratory study presents findings based on nine semi-structured interviews with clinical social workers who see fat clients. Participants were asked about …
Efficacy Of Bisphosphonates In The Treatment Of Low Bone Density In The Pediatric Population, Christopher Loucks, Elizabeth Szalay
Efficacy Of Bisphosphonates In The Treatment Of Low Bone Density In The Pediatric Population, Christopher Loucks, Elizabeth Szalay
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
Low bone density for age is becoming an increasingly recognized problem in the pediatric world. It can be a very tricky condition to properly diagnose and treat. Current treatment guidelines maintain that bisphosphonates are a last resort therapy and are not currently FDA approved for pediatric use. There is data available that supports the use of these agents in children for the treatment of low bone density, as well as secondary benefits, i.e. decreased incidence of insufficiency fractures. However, the majority of the studies includes small population sizes, they are not randomized, or are not compared to a control group. …
The Feasibility Of Dialogue Writing With Patients Who Have An Eating Disorder, Andrea Lynn Harbeck
The Feasibility Of Dialogue Writing With Patients Who Have An Eating Disorder, Andrea Lynn Harbeck
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This study emerged from the creation of dialogue writing, a new intervention for the treatment of eating disorders. A nascent intervention, the study investigated its feasibility as a form of treatment for eating disorders; specifically the study gathered data regarding the participant's experience with dialogue writing. The dialogue writing process involves writing a dialogue between the self and the eating disorder as personified in a character created by the participant. Nine women receiving treatment for eating disorders at a clinic participated in a group setting in the dialogue writing exercise, which was administered by the groups' regular facilitator. Although the …

Religion, Spirituality And Clinical Practice : An Exploration Of Practical Applications, Julia E. Gallichio
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
The purpose of this study was to elicit clinicians' perspectives and practices with religion and spirituality in clinical practice. Recent social work researchers note the roots of social work in spirituality and believe it can reinvigorate social work practice. Four focus groups were conducted in three different geographical locations with clinicians who included social workers, psychologists, and psychiatrists. It was found that the clinicians believed that including spirituality in practice benefits the client either in secular or sectarian ways. The application of spiritual practices varied widely. The majority of participants in this study reported the use of mindfulness and meditation …
