Molecular Dynamics Of Adenovirus Type 3 And 7 Infections In Military And Civilian Populations In The United States, Laura M. Dickson Dec 2009

Molecular Dynamics Of Adenovirus Type 3 And 7 Infections In Military And Civilian Populations In The United States, Laura M. Dickson

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Human adenoviruses (HAdV) are major causative agents of acute respiratory disease (ARD) worldwide. Military recruits and children are two of the populations most susceptible to HAdV infection in the United States. Infections by species B serotypes, including HAdV-3 and HAdV-7, are often associated with some of the most severe clinical manifestations of respiratory disease. In 1996, the production of the HAdV vaccine that was administered to US military recruits was discontinued. Since then, HAdV-associated ARD has reemerged in military training facilities nationwide compromising readiness and deployability of troops and causing significant financial burden to the Department of Defense (DoD). The …

China’S Evolving “Double-Track” Socio-Legal System In Conflict Resolution, Jieli Li Dec 2009

China’S Evolving “Double-Track” Socio-Legal System In Conflict Resolution, Jieli Li

Peace and Conflict Studies

Contemporary China's sociolegal control system is built upon a unique organizational arrangement which differs not only from other countries in the world but also from its own past. The very core of this organizational arrangement is what I define as a “double-track” socio-legality with laws and codified regulation mainly concentrated on economic and commercial sectors with the ruling party focusing its administrative control on political and ideological sectors. This institutional context is critical to understanding the nature of social control mechanism in China. The fact is that with all the laws and regulations promulgated in recent years, the newly developed …

Fighting Freestyle: The First Amendment, Fairness, And Corporate Reputation, Rebecca Tushnet Dec 2009

Fighting Freestyle: The First Amendment, Fairness, And Corporate Reputation, Rebecca Tushnet

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

There are three distinct groups who might want to engage in speech about commercial entities or to constrain those commercial entities from making particular claims of their own. Competitors may sue each other for false advertising, consumers may sue businesses, and government regulators may impose requirements on what businesses must and may not say. In this context, this Article will evaluate a facially persuasive but ultimately misguided claim about corporate speech: that because consumers regularly get to say nasty things about corporations under the lax standards governing defamation of public figures, corporations must be free to make factual claims subject …

In Situ Structural And Compositional Analysis Using Rheed Electrons Induced X-Rays, Sandeep Chandril Dec 2009

In Situ Structural And Compositional Analysis Using Rheed Electrons Induced X-Rays, Sandeep Chandril

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The use of x-ray fluorescence (XRF) for in-situ chemical analysis of a sample surface using an electron gun for reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) analysis has been studied by many groups and the technique is usually referred to as RHEED-total-refection-angle x-ray spectroscopy (RHEED-TRAXS), as the angle for x-ray detection was set close to the angle of total internal reflection.;In the current work, RHEED-TRAXS was developed as a thin film structural characterization technique based on the principles similar to the analysis of a multilayered structure by angular-dependent total-reflection x-rays. Initial experiments utilizing the technique for relative compositional analysis have also …

Cryptic Subtelomeric Rearrangements And Studies Of Telomere Length, Jasen Lee Wise Dec 2009

Cryptic Subtelomeric Rearrangements And Studies Of Telomere Length, Jasen Lee Wise

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Study One. An estimated five percent of individuals with unexplained mental retardation (MR) have chromosomally unbalanced subtelomere regions. Around half of these individuals inherited the imbalance from a parent with a balanced rearrangement. The frequency of carriers for cryptic balanced translocations is unknown. To determine this frequency, blood samples received from 565 out of 978 phenotypically normal, unrelated individuals were examined using fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) probes to analyze all subtelomere regions. No balanced subtelomeric rearrangements were identified. The frequency of balanced cryptic translocations in the general population was estimated to be 1/8,000 from the literature. However, three females …

Text Format, Text Comprehension, And Related Reader Variables, Jodi L. Nichols

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This investigation explored relationships between format of text (electronic or print-based) and reading comprehension of adolescent readers. Also in question were potential influences on comprehension from related measures including academic placement of participants, gender, prior knowledge of the content, and overall reading ability. Influences were measured through an unaided text retell and a constructed-response assessment with traditional questioning. Participants' reading preferences and self-reported reading behaviors were also explored.;Findings from regression analyses revealed that format of the text was not a significant predictor of reading comprehension for seventh grade students, despite participants' self-reported preference to reading electronic text. Conversely, participants' academic …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Background. Despite the consequences of physical inactivity, it is under recognized and not addressed consistently in primary care. The Healthy People 2010 recommendations are that adults should engage in at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity on most, preferably all, days of the week. Clinical practice guidelines advise that primary care practitioners take the opportunity whenever possible to advise, discuss, negotiate, or encourage physical activity in inactive adults. Objective. The primary objective was to identify beliefs about physical activity that act as barriers among providers and to educate them about the current recommendations for physical activity. An additional objective …

Educational Inequity, Erica Jade Lyons Dec 2009

Educational Inequity, Erica Jade Lyons

Social Sciences

Our society’s public school education system is reproducing, if not enhancing, social stratification and inequality. The United States spends less on the schools that have the largest population of low-income and minority children than on schools with children from the more affluent families, typically White children. We are only further widening the gap between rich and poor when we give the children who come from the bottom end of class structure and give them even less when they leave their homes to come to class. In the United States, we spend approximately $900 less per year on each student from …

Lessons Learned In Public Image Management: An Examination Of Public Relations Strategies Employed By Public Agencies During Hurricane Katrina, Cassandra Keyse Dec 2009

Lessons Learned In Public Image Management: An Examination Of Public Relations Strategies Employed By Public Agencies During Hurricane Katrina, Cassandra Keyse

Journalism

When Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast in August of 2005, many were left without shelter and in need of immediate federal assistance. This presented many public organizations with a crisis that they weren't properly prepared to respond to, both in the literal sense and in their public image management preparation. The United States Army Corps of Engineers and the Federal Emergency Response Agency were two of these agencies that received criticism from the public and in the press about their lack of a timely response to the disaster. A content analysis of a local newspaper from New Orleans and …

Methods For Retaining And Monetizing Local Audiences Of An Online-Only News Organization, Lauren Rabaino Dec 2009

Methods For Retaining And Monetizing Local Audiences Of An Online-Only News Organization, Lauren Rabaino

Journalism

Newspapers are at a crossroads in their existence. Traditionally, the printed giants were able to hold monopolies in their respective municipalities because the barrier to entry for printing was high and the operating costs were expensive. A study published in 1978 – a decade before the Internet came to fruition – reported that local newspaper monopolies existed in more than 97 percent of U.S. cities . But with the Web, that dynamic has vastly shifted. Widely accessible and affordable Web platforms eliminate both the barrier to entry and operating costs required to publish to a mass audience. As a result, …

Differences In Computer Mediated Versus Face To Face Negotiation, Melissa Oates Dec 2009

Differences In Computer Mediated Versus Face To Face Negotiation, Melissa Oates

Psychology and Child Development

Ninety Cal Poly students participated in a study to test the hypothesis that e-negotiators would be more likely than face-to-face (FTF) negotiators to employ unethical or competitive negotiation styles in a subsequent negotiation after being lied to in a previous negotiation. Sixty-four Cal Poly students were randomly assigned to partake in a computer mediated or FTF negotiation over the sale of a car. After the initial negotiation was completed, buyers in each condition were led to believe they had been lied to about the accident history of the car. Participants then completed The Incidents in Negotiation Questionnaire by Robinson, Lewicki, …

Theft As “Involuntary Gifting” Among The Tacana Of Northern Bolivia, Laura Bathurst Dec 2009

Theft As “Involuntary Gifting” Among The Tacana Of Northern Bolivia, Laura Bathurst

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

It has been well established in the anthropological literature that reciprocity, in its various cultural forms, is simultaneously produced by and productive of social relationships; it both comments upon social relationships and plays a role in creating them. However, this has generally been demonstrated using positive forms of reciprocity. In this paper I examine how theft, as a form of negative reciprocity, fit with a wider set of positive reciprocal obligations among the Tacana in northeastern Bolivia in 2001-2002. Theft, I argue, was part of a coherent cultural system in which a material basis, social norms, and values and beliefs …

A Bright Idea From The Black Canyon: Federal Judicial Review Of Reserved Water Right Settlements, Reed D. Benson Dec 2009

A Bright Idea From The Black Canyon: Federal Judicial Review Of Reserved Water Right Settlements, Reed D. Benson

Faculty Scholarship

Under the reserved water rights doctrine, lands the federal government has designated for a particular purpose have rights to sufficient water to fulfill that purpose. Reserved water rights are also known as Winters rights after the doctrine's foundational case, in which the United States Supreme Court held that Congress must have intended to reserve sufficient water to irrigate an Indian reservation although the treaty establishing that reservation said nothing about water.

Online And Face-To-Face Classes: A Comparative Analysis Of Teaching Presence And Instructor Satisfaction, David T. Bentz Dec 2009

Online And Face-To-Face Classes: A Comparative Analysis Of Teaching Presence And Instructor Satisfaction, David T. Bentz

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Teaching presence is one of three components of the Community of Inquiry Model proposed by Garrison, Anderson, and Archer (2000). This study examined teaching presence, as measured by the instructional design and organization, and directed facilitation (Shea, Li, Swan, and Pickett, 2005), in a large undergraduate science course, contrasting two modes of lecture delivery, face-to-face and online video. Confirmatory factor analysis validated the teaching presence instrument, producing factor loadings similar to Shea et al.'s for both online and face-to-face delivery. Analysis of the relationship between instructor satisfaction and teaching presence (instructional design and organization, and directed facilitation) produced a significant …

Similarity Solutions For A Steady Mhd Falkner-Skan Flow And Heat Transfer Over A Wedge Considering The Effects Of Variable Viscosity And Thermal Conductivity, M. A. Seddeek, A. A. Afify, A. M. Al-Hanaya

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

An analysis is carried out to study the Falkner–Skan flow and heat transfer of an incompressible, electrically conducting fluid over a wedge in the presence of variable viscosity and thermal conductivity effects. The similarity solutions are obtained using scaling group of transformations. Furthermore the similarity equations are solved numerically by employing Kellr-Box method. Numerical results of the local skin friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number as well as the velocity and the temperature profiles are presented for different physical parameters.

Invisible Children And The Cyberactivist Spectator, Shayne Pepper Dec 2009

Invisible Children And The Cyberactivist Spectator, Shayne Pepper

Communication, Media and Theatre Faculty Publications

This essay combines textual analysis of the Invisible Children documentary along with an examination of the ways in which the Invisible Children movement has utilized network technologies to spread awareness, raise money, and enlist individuals to join in this cause. Drawing upon previous studies of similar social movements, I will consider the Invisible Children project as a particularly unique example of “cyberactivism” in the way that it utilizes networked technologies (social networking sites in particular) and, by centering this movement on the documentary, represents a new type of cultural logic that Henry Jenkins’ calls “convergence culture.” Having positioned the Invisible …
