Measuring The Impacts Of Advocacy And Community Organizing: Application Of A Methodology And Initial Findings, Lisa Ranghelli Jan 2009

Measuring The Impacts Of Advocacy And Community Organizing: Application Of A Methodology And Initial Findings, Lisa Ranghelli

The Foundation Review

· The increasing emphasis by funders on strategic grantmaking and measurable outcomes may be a disincentive to support policy and advocacy work, because of the perception that outcomes can be difficult to assess.

· A tool for measuring impact can reduce the barriers to funding advocacy and policy work.

· The tool draws upon the literatures on evaluating advocacy and organizing, social capital building efforts, and return on investment approaches to evaluation.

· The tool was applied in two sites, where funders found it useful to understand advocacy impacts and learn how advocacy can enhance their grantmaking goals.

The West Virginia Uncovered Etrainer; Creating An Online Multimedia Training Guide, Jessica M. Rhodes Jan 2009

The West Virginia Uncovered Etrainer; Creating An Online Multimedia Training Guide, Jessica M. Rhodes

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This professional project contains an external Web site, which serves as a multimedia journalism training guide for weekly rural newspapers in West Virginia. The training guide focuses on issues that many small rural newspapers face, including small staffs and limited budgets and resources. Small rural weekly newspapers in West Virginia serve as beacons of community journalism within their counties. Through the use of multimedia, they can enhance their Web sites to document the lives of those in their community in ways that are far more diverse than print journalism. This professional project also discusses the issues of social responsibility and …

The 5' Bop Gene Stem-Loop Sequence: Stability, Structure, And Function, Srikanth Tangelloju Jan 2009

The 5' Bop Gene Stem-Loop Sequence: Stability, Structure, And Function, Srikanth Tangelloju

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

In pursuit of GPCR characterization, our lab chose to work with a model organism Halobacterium salinarum (H sal). This organism contains the bacterioopsin gene (bop), which encodes the protein precursor of the purple membrane protein bacterioopsin (Bop). The bacterioopsin gene (bop) was chosen as the reporter for the study. The putative stem-loop structure within the bop gene is considered to be a key component of the molecular machinery that regulates Bop synthesis. Previous work in our lab has indicated that single base pair disruptions dramatically reduced stem-loop stability (differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), circular dichroism (CD) and ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy analysis). …

Nuclear Morphometry In Relation To Tumor Grade In Canine Spontaneous Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinomas, Radostin Simeonov Jan 2009

Nuclear Morphometry In Relation To Tumor Grade In Canine Spontaneous Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinomas, Radostin Simeonov

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In a retrospective study on cytological specimens from 17 dogs with histologically confirmed cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, the morphometric variables were studied and compared to tumors' nuclear grade. The morphometric parameters evaluated in this study were mean nuclear area (MNA, µm2), mean nuclear perimeter (MNP, µm), mean nuclear diameter (D mean, µm), minimum nuclear diameter (D min, µm), and maximum nuclear diameter (D max, µm). Associations between MNA, MNP, D mean, D min, and D max and tumors' grade were assessed using the ANOVA/LSD test (Statistica 6.0, StatSoft, USA) at a level of significance of P < 0.05. The result indicated an increase in the mean values of the nuclear parameters with increasing tumor grade. In the cases examined, significant differences in MNA, MNP, and D mean occurred between tumors in all grades. Besides, no significant differences in D max (between grade I-II and II-III) and D min (grade II-III) were found. In conclusion, nuclear morphometry could be used as an additional tool for differentiating nuclear grade in canine cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas.

A Comparative Study Of Parthenogenetic Activation And In Vitro Fertilization Of In Vitro Matured Bovine Oocytes, Mesut Çevi̇k, Arzu Taş, Tolga Akkoç, Haydar Bağiş, Sezen Arat

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of 3 chemical agents used sequentially and electrical stimuli on parthenogenetic activation of in vitro matured bovine oocytes and comparison with a standard IVF protocol for embryo developmental rates. For this purpose, oocytes were matured in tissue culture medium-199 (TCM-199) at 39 °C and 5% of CO_2 in humidified air. For IVF, matured oocytes were fertilized in Modified Tyrode-Lactate Medium. In the parthenogenetic activation process, direct current (DC) was pulsed (133 V/500 \mum) for 25 \mus and oocytes were sequentially activated with calcium ionophore (CaI) for 10 min, cycloheximide (CHX) …

Effect Of Phosalone On Haematological Indices In The Tilapia, Oreochromis Mossambicus, H. Abdul Jaffar Ali, V. Jaya Rani

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to assess the effect of phosalone on the tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus. The effect was assessed on the basis of the results of acute toxicity tests and comparison of results of haematological examination of a control and an experimental group exposed to phosalone. The 96 h LC_{50} is the basic value in the acute toxicity test and it was 0.26 mg/L for phosalone against the test fish. Haematological profile of the healthy fish was carried out with 2 sublethal concentrations, viz 0.0325 mg/L (1/8) and 0.065 mg/L (1/4) of phosalone. The experiment was performed semi-statically …

Female Captivity Narratives In Colonial America, Kathryn O'Hara Jan 2009

Female Captivity Narratives In Colonial America, Kathryn O'Hara

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

The female captivity narrative provides a complex view of colonial American history by recounting the experiences of women captured from their colonial homes by Native Americans. Male editors, often family friends or town ministers, generally compiled the experiences of female captives, and separating the voice of the female captive from influence of the male editor presents a challenge. Puritan captivity narratives in particular demonstrate conflict between attempts by Puritan ministers to impose a unified religious message in the sagas and the captives’ individual experiences, which often contradicted Puritan doctrine. During the early colonial era, ministers’ attempts to promote the Puritan …

140th Anniversary Symposium: Fourteenth Amendment Citizenship And The Reconstruction-Era Black Public Sphere, James Fox Jan 2009

140th Anniversary Symposium: Fourteenth Amendment Citizenship And The Reconstruction-Era Black Public Sphere, James Fox

Con Law Center Articles and Publications

This project delves more deeply into the possible meanings of constitutional citizenship.. Somewhat in the tradition of the popular constitutionalism scholars, it proposes that the best source for meanings of constitutional citizenship will come not from traditionally originalist sources but from those who attempted to redefine citizenship in a more egalitarian and democratic manner and who established, both in word and in practice, meanings for citizenship on the ground. This argument borrows a theoretical framework from political and social theory: the theories of civil society and the public sphere. This captures—in ways often missed by both legal scholars and historians—the …

Keeping Them Down On The Farm: The Possibility Of A Class Action By Former Minor League Baseball Players Against Major League Baseball For Allowing Steroid Abuse, Patrick S. Baldwin Jan 2009

Keeping Them Down On The Farm: The Possibility Of A Class Action By Former Minor League Baseball Players Against Major League Baseball For Allowing Steroid Abuse, Patrick S. Baldwin

Georgia Law Review

Over the past five years, allegations and admissions of steroid abuse by professional baseball players have tarnished the image of "Our National Pastime." Although the players are ultimately responsible for using performance-enhancing drugs, they are not solely to blame. Major League Baseball and its franchise owners knew about the abuse and did nothing to stop it-mostly because the threat to home run records had begun refilling the seats that had been lost from the 1994-1995 labor strike. But this steroid scandal has called into question many of those new records and caused outrage among the media, the fans, and even …

From Environment To Energy: China's Reconceptualization Of Climate Change, Dongsheng Zang Jan 2009

From Environment To Energy: China's Reconceptualization Of Climate Change, Dongsheng Zang

Articles

Domestically and internationally, by the first half of 2009 it was already questionable whether the Copenhagen Conference could achieve anything. Anthony Giddens warned-in an otherwise inspiring book on climate change-that "doomsday is no longer a religious concept, a day of spiritual reckoning, but a possibility imminent in our society and economy." In such a context, it becomes imperative to revisit some of the fundamental issues in the Kyoto Protocol framework. Are timetables and targets really the best way to regulate climate change? Does the current framework create bad politics? Where are the powerful driving forces towards a low-carbon society?

This …

Worst Case And The Worst Example: An Agenda For Any Young Lawyer Who Wants To Save The World From Climate Chaos, William H. Rodgers, Jr., Anna T. Moritz Jan 2009

Worst Case And The Worst Example: An Agenda For Any Young Lawyer Who Wants To Save The World From Climate Chaos, William H. Rodgers, Jr., Anna T. Moritz

Articles

Wherever you turn with regard to climate change, you'll hear about the worst, and the worst of the worst, and the worst that will happen after that. Young lawyers should put themselves in the right frame of mind to tackle all these "worsts" that are headed our way.

In the interest of keeping it simple, we would suggest a personal strategy for every young lawyer that would entail: (I) Honoring Knowledge and Learning; (II) Protecting Your Institutions and Loving Your Country; (III) Planning and Conducting Your Personal War on Bad Law; and (IV) Rejecting Defeatism and Impossibility Theorems.

Let's consider …

Brief Of Law Professors As Amici Curiae In Support Of The Petitioners, Harjo V. Pro-Football Inc., Victoria Phillips, Christine Haight Farley Jan 2009

Brief Of Law Professors As Amici Curiae In Support Of The Petitioners, Harjo V. Pro-Football Inc., Victoria Phillips, Christine Haight Farley

Amicus Briefs & Court Filings

Amici are scholars at U.S. law schools whose research and teaching focus is intellectual property law, federal Indian law and constitutional law. Amici are concerned that the Court of Appeals decision below is inconsistent with the well settled law that laches does not apply to trademark cancellation claims, including those based on disparagement, because of the strong public interest in being free from the harms that disparagement causes.

These harms, which include damaging stereotyping and stigmatization, are serious and deserve protection no matter what private harm may be caused by delay to the trademark registrant. Further, precluding laches in these …
