Epigenetic Control Mechanisms In Somatic Cells Mediated By Dna Methyltransferase 1, Bongyong Lee Jan 2009

Epigenetic Control Mechanisms In Somatic Cells Mediated By Dna Methyltransferase 1, Bongyong Lee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

DNA methylation regulates gene expression through a complex network of protein/protein and protein/DNA interactions in chromatin. The maintenance methylase, DNA methyltransferase 1 (DNMT1), is a prominent enzyme in the process that is linked to DNA replication and drives the heritable nature of epigenetic modifications in somatic cells. The mechanistic details that explain how DNMT1 catalytic action is directed in a chromatin setting are not well understood. We hypothesize that post translational modifications and a variety of protein-protein interactions processes are key regulatory elements that set the methylation of CpG elements essential for normal growth behavior in somatic cells. These fundamental …

Development Of Measurement And Modeling Techniques To Quantify Atmospheric Deposition Of Persistent, Bioaccumulative And Toxic Chemicals In The Great Lakes, Mark D. Rowe Jan 2009

Development Of Measurement And Modeling Techniques To Quantify Atmospheric Deposition Of Persistent, Bioaccumulative And Toxic Chemicals In The Great Lakes, Mark D. Rowe

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Measurement and modeling techniques were developed to improve over-water gaseous air-water exchange measurements for persistent bioaccumulative and toxic chemicals (PBTs). Analytical methods were applied to atmospheric measurements of hexachlorobenzene (HCB), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). Additionally, the sampling and analytical methods are well suited to study semivolatile organic compounds (SOCs) in air with applications related to secondary organic aerosol formation, urban, and indoor air quality.

A novel gas-phase cleanup method is described for use with thermal desorption methods for analysis of atmospheric SOCs using multicapillary denuders. The cleanup selectively removed hydrogen-bonding chemicals from samples, including much of …

Not Your Mother's Latinas : Film Representations For A New Millennium, Jeannie Ann Patrick Jan 2009

Not Your Mother's Latinas : Film Representations For A New Millennium, Jeannie Ann Patrick

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

This dissertation seeks to contribute to film, feminist and Latino/a studies by exploring the construction and ideological implications of representations of Latinas in four recent, popular U.S. films: Girlfight (Kusama 2000), Maid in Manhattan (Wang 2002), Real Women Have Curves (Cardoso 2002) and Spanglish (Brooks 2004). These films were released following a time of tremendous growth in the population and the political and economic strength of the Latina/o community as well as a rise in popularity and visibility in the 1990s of entertainers like Selena and actresses such as Jennifer Lopez and Salma Hayek. Drawing on the critical concepts of …

Yeast Telomere Capping Protein Stn1 Overrides Dna Replication Control Through The S Phase Checkpoint, Hovik J. Gasparyan Jan 2009

Yeast Telomere Capping Protein Stn1 Overrides Dna Replication Control Through The S Phase Checkpoint, Hovik J. Gasparyan

Biology Faculty Works

Telomere integrity is maintained through end-protection proteins that block nuclease degradation and prevent telomeres from being recognized as DNA breaks. Although less well understood, end protection proteins may also play a role in facilitating telomere replication. Here, we show that overproduction (OP) of the yeast telomere capping protein Stn1 makes cells highly sensitive to the replication inhibitors hydroxyurea (HU) and methyl-methane sulfonate (MMS). Unexpectedly, this sensitivity corresponds with Stn1 OP blocking most, if not all, aspects of the S phase checkpoint. The checkpoint kinase Rad53 is phosphorylated with normal timing in Stn1 OP cells, indicating Stn1 does not interfere with …

Ten1 Is Essential For Cdc13-Mediated Telomere Capping, Hovik J. Gasparyan Jan 2009

Ten1 Is Essential For Cdc13-Mediated Telomere Capping, Hovik J. Gasparyan

Biology Faculty Works

Telomere binding proteins protect chromosome ends from degradation and mask chromosome termini from checkpoint surveillance. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Cdc13 binds single-stranded G-rich telomere repeats, maintaining telomere integrity and length. Two additional proteins, Ten1 and Stn1, interact with Cdc13 but their contributions to telomere integrity are not well defined. Ten1 is known to prevent accumulation of aberrant single-stranded telomere DNA; whether this results from defective end protection or defective telomere replication is unclear. Here we report our analysis of a new group of ten1 temperature-sensitive (ts) mutants. At permissive temperatures, ten1-ts strains display greatly elongated telomeres. After shift to nonpermissive conditions, …

An Algorithm For Identifying Novel Targets Of Transcription Factor Families: Application To Hypoxia-Inducible Factor 1 Targets, Yue Jiang, Bojan Cukic, Donald A. Adjeroh, Heath D. Skinner, Jie Lin, Qingxi J. Shen, Bing-Hua Jiang Jan 2009

An Algorithm For Identifying Novel Targets Of Transcription Factor Families: Application To Hypoxia-Inducible Factor 1 Targets, Yue Jiang, Bojan Cukic, Donald A. Adjeroh, Heath D. Skinner, Jie Lin, Qingxi J. Shen, Bing-Hua Jiang

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

Efficient and effective analysis of the growing genomic databases requires the development of adequate computational tools. We introduce a fast method based on the suffix tree data structure for predicting novel targets of hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) from huge genome databases. The suffix tree data structure has two powerful applications here: one is to extract unknown patterns from multiple strings/sequences in linear time; the other is to search multiple strings/sequences using multiple patterns in linear time. Using 15 known HIF-1 target gene sequences as a training set, we extracted 105 common patterns that all occur in the 15 training genes …

Model For Alumina Nanopore-Based Optical Filter, Nathan Lehman, Rama Venkat, Robert A. Schill Jan 2009

Model For Alumina Nanopore-Based Optical Filter, Nathan Lehman, Rama Venkat, Robert A. Schill

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

Alumina nanopore structures find applications in magnetic sensors, optical filters, and various biological devices. In this work, we present a ray-optics model for the optical filter. We present a detailed simulation and a simplified analytical expression for the reflectance as a function of the alumina parameters such as pore diameter, pore density, alumina thickness, and a function of the wavelength and angle of incidence of the illuminating plane electromagnetic wave. The reflectance vs wavelength in the range of 400–800nm obtained from the simulation and the analytical expression are compared with that of the experiments for thin and thick alumina. All …

Proximate Composition, Chlorophyll A, And Carotenoid Content In Dunaliella Salina (Dunal) Teod (Chlorophycea: Dunaliellaceae) Cultured With Cost-Effective Seaweed Liquid Fertilizer Medium, Raghavan Gireesh

Turkish Journal of Botany

Growth, proximate composition, chlorophyll a, and carotenoid content were estimated in static cultures of micro alga Dunaliella salina (Dunal) Teod (Chlorophycea: Dunaliellaceae) to compare the quality and quantity of biomass produced with seaweed liquid fertilizer (SLF) against Walne´s medium. Culture of micro algae was performed with controlled temperature of 27 ± 1 °C, salinity of 33, and an irradiance of 120 ± 3 µ mol m^{-2} s^{-1}, and daily samples were taken to estimate the above-mentioned parameters. Mean cellular density from samples of both medium were similar and growth rates were 0.44 and 0.42 doubling per day, respectively. Maximum values …

Protecting Well-Being While Pursuing Justice, Barbara Sturgis Jan 2009

Protecting Well-Being While Pursuing Justice, Barbara Sturgis

Center on Children, Families, and the Law: Faculty Publications

The second and third chapters in this section draw attention to circumstances in which concerns regarding the ability of the criminal justice process to achieve just outcomes intersect with concerns regarding the potential effects of that process on the psychological well-being of various participants. These chapters by Bruce Winick, Jodi Quas, and Bradley McAuliff can reasonably be understood as complimentary in the following sense. Winick’s chapter endorses a substantive legal standard and a proposed procedure for applying that standard that raises a series of questions regarding the manner in which that procedure, and the participants in that procedure, will be …

"Just Trying To Be Human In This Place": Storytelling And Film In The First-Year Law School Classroom, Kate Nace Day, Russell G. Murphy

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

In 2007, the latest in a long line of studies and research projects that critically examined American legal education were published. The Carnegie Foundation Report, “Educating Lawyers: Preparation for the Profession of Law”, and the empirical research findings of linguistic anthropologist Elizabeth Mertz, “The Language of Law School: Learning to 'Think Like A Lawyer'”, identified many shortcomings and negative consequences that result from the traditional pedagogy of the American law school classroom. In this Article, Professors Kate Nace Day and Russell G. Murphy explore some of the findings of these studies in the context of their experimentation with the use …

Procter & Gamble’S Pur Water Purifier: The Hunt For A Sustainable Business Model, Lisa Jones Christensen, Jessica Thomas

Faculty Publications

Over the last 6 years, under the leadership of Dr. Greg Allgood, director of the Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program, P&G has helped to distribute 65 million PuR packets. These packets have been used to purify 650 million liters of water, most often in rural locations. Over time, and through a variety of deliberate partnerships that Allgood cultivated in 10 countries, P&G has tested three different sales and distribution models: commercial marketing, social marketing and disaster relief-- each with varying degrees of success. Drawing from past successes and failures, Allgood is considering how to fulfill P&G’s aggressive commitment to providing …

Latina/Os' And Latina/O Legal Studies: A Critical And Self-Critical Review Of Latcrit Theory And Legal Models Of Knowledge Production, Margaret E. Montoya, Francisco Valdes Jan 2009

Latina/Os' And Latina/O Legal Studies: A Critical And Self-Critical Review Of Latcrit Theory And Legal Models Of Knowledge Production, Margaret E. Montoya, Francisco Valdes

Faculty Scholarship

For the twelfth time in as many years, the LatCrit community convened its annual conference to underscore the importance of location and locality in the work that we do. The conference theme's framing around Critical Localities: Epistemic Communities, Rooted Cosmopolitans and Knowledge Processes not only focused our collective attention on questions of epistemic community and intellectual (as well as physical) location, but also invited reflection on the meanings we inscribe onto the positions we elect to stake out for ourselves and our work in light of the options and traditions that serve as background. The "Critical Localities" theme invites an …

Is Visual Selective Attention In Deaf Individuals Enhanced Or Deficient? The Case Of Useful Field Of View, Matthew Dye, Peter Hauser, Daphne Bavelier Jan 2009

Is Visual Selective Attention In Deaf Individuals Enhanced Or Deficient? The Case Of Useful Field Of View, Matthew Dye, Peter Hauser, Daphne Bavelier

Articles

Background: Early deafness leads to enhanced attention in the visual periphery. Yet, whether this enhancement confers advantages in everyday life remains unknown, as deaf individuals have. been shown to be more distracted by irrelevant information in the periphery than their hearing peers. Here, we ~how that, in a complex attentional task, a performance advantage results for deaf individuals. Methodology/Principal Findings: We employed the Useful Field of View (UFOV) which requires central target identification concurrent with peripheral target localization in the presence of distraetors - a divided, selective attention task. First, the comparison of deaf and hearing adults with or without …

On The Approximability Of Dodgson And Young Elections, Ioannis Caragiannis, Jason Covey, Michal Feldman, Christopher Homan, Christos Kaklamanis, Nikos Karanikolas, Ariel D. Procaccia, Jeffrey S. Rosenschein

Articles

The voting rules proposed by Dodgson and Young are both designed to nd the alternative closest to being a Condorcet winner, according to two di erent notions of proximity; the score of a given alternative is known to be hard to compute under either rule. In this paper, we put forward two algorithms for ap- proximating the Dodgson score: an LP-based randomized rounding algorithm and a deterministic greedy algorithm, both of which yield an O(logm) approximation ratio, where m is the number of alternatives; we observe that this result is asymptotically optimal, and further prove that our greedy algorithm is …

Identifying Layout Classes For Mathematical Symbols Using Layout Context, Ling Ouyang, Richard Zanibbi Jan 2009

Identifying Layout Classes For Mathematical Symbols Using Layout Context, Ling Ouyang, Richard Zanibbi

Articles

We describe a symbol classification technique for identifying the expected locations of neighboring symbols in mathematical expressions. We use the seven symbol layout classes of the DRACULAE math notation parser (Zanibbi, Blostein, and Cordy, 2002) to represent expected locations for neighboring symbols: Ascender, Descender, Centered, Open Bracket, Non-Script, Variable Range (e.g. integrals) and Square Root. A new feature based on shape contexts (Belongie et al., 2002) named layout context is used to describe the arrangement of neighboring symbol bounding boxes relative to a reference symbol, and the nearest neighbor rule is used for classification. 1917 mathematical symbols from the University …

Bayesian Computation Of The Intrinsic Structure Of Factor Analytic Models, Ernest Fokoue Jan 2009

Bayesian Computation Of The Intrinsic Structure Of Factor Analytic Models, Ernest Fokoue

Articles

The study of factor analytic models often has to address two important issues: (a) the determination of the “optimum” number of factors and (b) the derivation of a unique simple structure whose interpretation is easy and straightforward. The classical approach deals with these two tasks separately, and sometimes resorts to ad-hoc methods. This paper proposes a Bayesian approach to these two important issues, and adapts ideas from stochastic geometry and Bayesian finite mixture modelling to construct an ergodic Markov chain having the posterior distribution of the complete collection of parameters (including the number of factors) as its equilibrium distribution. The …

Developments In Canadian Adult Guardianship And Co-Decision-Making Law, Sarah Burningham Jan 2009

Developments In Canadian Adult Guardianship And Co-Decision-Making Law, Sarah Burningham

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

Guardianship was originally developed as a social and legal tool meant to protect vulnerable persons. It is now evolving as a mechanism to promote autonomy. This paper examines the Canadian law of guardianship, including its historical evolution, the social and legal catalysts for its reform and related constitutional issues. Guardianship law has a long history in Western society, and has traditionally been paternalistic and property-focused. Early Canadian guardianship laws were largely based on English lunacy acts, and continued unchanged into the second half of the twentieth century. Reformation in Canadian guardianship law began in the 1970s and 80s, with criticism …

Art For Life: A Spiritual Journey Of Art And The Bonds Of Community, Tara Lynn Smith Jan 2009

Art For Life: A Spiritual Journey Of Art And The Bonds Of Community, Tara Lynn Smith

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Within mainstream culture exists an accepted protocol by which most people function in daily life. The majority of the population has a standard way of life without much detour to other possibilities. Sometimes this canonical does not seem quite right. The potential detour then becomes increasingly difficult to ignore because a disconnect of community runs rampant in the corners of our culture. My intuition regarding a way to live differently coupled with a spiritual connection and life-purpose, has caused me to take action in unexpected ways resulting in outcomes of revelation. In pursuit ways to re-connect to the significance of …

Sentimental Journey?: The Immigrant Experience Of World War Ii-Era War Brides In Montana, Anna Claire Amundson Jan 2009

Sentimental Journey?: The Immigrant Experience Of World War Ii-Era War Brides In Montana, Anna Claire Amundson

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

During and after World War II, over one hundred thousand American servicemen married women they met in the course of their deployment overseas. In early 1946, these women, commonly known as “war brides,” began to immigrate to the United States to join their husbands. Over one hundred of the women settled in Montana, in both urban and rural areas of the state. This thesis examines the women’s lives in Europe, Australia, and Asia before their immigration, and the unprecedented nature of their immigration to the United States, which the United States Army both arranged and paid for. Additionally, the thesis …

Barriers To E-Learning Job Training: Government Employee Experiences In An Online Wilderness Management Course, Lisa Ayrdrie Kathleen Eidson

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Learning at work as an employee is inherently different from being a student in an academic setting and, as such, is beset with different challenges. As trends in the adoption of e-learning for the delivery of job training increase, new challenges related to distance learning with technology have also emerged. Recognition that continued learning in the workplace, now via technological methods, is required for maintaining proficiency and achieving career goals means that understanding the challenges unique to learning at work is paramount.

This qualitative study explored barriers to successful online job learning. Interviews with thirty federal government employees from the …

Beyond Wilderness: Wildness As A Guiding Ideal, Christopher James Dunn Jan 2009

Beyond Wilderness: Wildness As A Guiding Ideal, Christopher James Dunn

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This thesis is largely a response to William Cronon’s essay “The Trouble with Wilderness or Getting Back to the Wrong Nature,” found in The Great New Wilderness Debate. Cronon is himself responding to many things, in large part to Bill McKibben’s The End of Nature and also to the wilderness vision typified by Dave Foreman; thus this thesis is also a response to McKibben and in many respects a defense of Foreman-like thought. Besides Cronon, I consider a wide variety of sources, taking from them in order to build a case for, and to explicate, wildness as a guiding ideal. …

Knowing The Natural World: The Construction Of Knowledge About Evolution In And Out Of The Classroom, Alison Emily Havard Perkins Jan 2009

Knowing The Natural World: The Construction Of Knowledge About Evolution In And Out Of The Classroom, Alison Emily Havard Perkins

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Evolution is a central underlying concept to a significant number of discourses in civilized society, but the complexity of understanding basic tenets of this important theory is just now coming to light. Knowledge about evolution is constructed from both formal and "free-choice" opportunities, like television. Nature programs are commonly considered "educational" by definition, but research indicates the narratives often promote creationist ideas about this important process in biology. I explored how nature programs influenced knowledge construction about evolutionary theory using a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches. Because misconceptions about evolution are common, I examined how students` conceptual ecologies changed …

Disordered Eating, Antifat Attitudes, And Barriers To Treatment In College Women From Urban And Rural Areas, Alison Christine Pepper Jan 2009

Disordered Eating, Antifat Attitudes, And Barriers To Treatment In College Women From Urban And Rural Areas, Alison Christine Pepper

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Disordered eating (DE) is associated with physical and emotional consequences. Most incidence studies comparing rates in urban and rural regions are international. Only one examined regional differences within the United States, and no significant differences emerged. Additionally, no investigations focus on DE treatment barriers specific to rural regions. In 106 college women with significant DE patterns, this study investigated weight-based prejudices, system-level barriers, and regional status. Despite no significant regional differences in DE or barriers to treatment, results revealed high prevalence of DE and exposed barriers to DE-treatment among college women. Exploratory analyses supplement the dearth of research focusing on …

Mormon Cinema On The Web, Randy Astle Jan 2009

Mormon Cinema On The Web, Randy Astle

BYU Studies

Mormon cinema on the Internet is a moving target. Because change in this medium occurs so rapidly, the information presented in this review will necessarily become dated in a few months and much more so in the years to come. What I hope to provide, therefore, is a snapshot of online resources related to LDS or Mormon cinema near the beginning of their evolution. I believe that the Internet will become the next great force in both Mormon cinema and world cinema in general, if it has not already done so. Hence, while the current article may prove useful for …
