Structural Basis For Α-Conotoxin Potency And Selectivity, Matthew Turner, Seth Eidemiller, Bryan Martin, Andrew Narver, Joshua Marshall, Kenneth A. Cornell, Owen M. Mcdougal Aug 2009

Structural Basis For Α-Conotoxin Potency And Selectivity, Matthew Turner, Seth Eidemiller, Bryan Martin, Andrew Narver, Joshua Marshall, Kenneth A. Cornell, Owen M. Mcdougal

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Parkinson's disease is a debilitating movement disorder characterized by altered levels of α6β2* nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) localized on presynaptic striatal catecholaminergic neurons. α-Conotoxin MII (α-CTx MII) is a highly useful ligand to probe α6ß2 nAChRs structure and function, but it does not discriminate among closely related α6* nAChR subtypes. Modification of the α-CTx MII primary sequence led to the identification of α-CTx MII[E11A], an analog with 500-5300 fold discrimination between α6* subtypes found in both human and non-human primates. α-CTx MII[E11A] binds most strongly (femtomolar dissociation constant) to …

A Segmented Aperture Space Telescope Modeling Tool And Its Application To Remote Sensing As Understood Through Image Quality And Image Utility, Michael E. Zelinski Aug 2009

A Segmented Aperture Space Telescope Modeling Tool And Its Application To Remote Sensing As Understood Through Image Quality And Image Utility, Michael E. Zelinski

Theses

The remote sensing community is constantly pushing technology forward to achieve bet- ter system performance, this is often done by improving signal-to-noise ratio and spatial and spectral resolution. However, improving one design parameter (such as spatial resolution) could detract from another (such as signal-to-noise). A flexible imaging system simulation tool capable of modeling the effects of changes in system parameters would be a great asset to design engineers. In words, this tool would manipulate a "perfect" image and produce an output image identical to one physically created by the imaging system. Having such a tool available would make it possible …

Geologic Setting Of The Phoenix Lander Mission Landing Site, Tabatha Heet Aug 2009

Geologic Setting Of The Phoenix Lander Mission Landing Site, Tabatha Heet

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The Phoenix Lander touched down on the northern distal flank of the shield volcano Alba Patera in a ~150 km wide valley underlain by the Scandia Formation. The geomorphology and geology of the landing site is dominated by the ~0.6 Ga, 11.5 km wide, bowl-shaped impact crater, Heimdal, and its areally extensive ejecta deposits. The Lander is located ~20 km to the west of the crater and is sitting on a plains surface underlain by partially eroded Heimdal ejecta deposits. Heimdal was produced by a hypervelocity impact into fine-grained, ice-rich material and is inferred to have produced high velocity winds …

Toward Charge-Neutral ‘Soft Scorpionates’: Coordination Chemistry And Lewis Acid Promoted Isomerization Of Tris(1-Organo-Imidazol-2-Ylthio)Methanes, Chengeto Gwengo, Rosalice M. Silva, Mark D. Smith, Sergey V. Lindeman, James R. Gardinier

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Two tris(1-organo-imidazol-2-ylthio)methanes, HC(S-timR)3 (R = organo = methyl, tert-butyl), have been prepared by a triphasic reaction between chloroform, the appropriate heterocycle, and saturated aqueous solutions of Na2CO3, in the presence of a phase transfer agent, (NBu4)(Br). These ligands have been characterized both spectroscopically and by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The reaction chemistry of these potentially N,N,N-tripodal ligands with AgBF4 was also explored where simple 1:1 coordination complexes could be isolated from reactions performed in THF solution at room temperature. The derivative {Ag[HC(S-timMe)3]}(BF4) was structurally …

Faculty Articles

I discuss heavy flavor production at hadronic facilities. I present total cross sections and differential distributions for top quark, bottom quark, and charm quark production at the rrevatron and LHC colliders, and at fixed-target experiments such as HERA-B. The calculations include complete next-to-leading order corrections as well as higher-order soft-gluon corrections which are important near kinematical threshold.

Selection Of Switching Sites In All-Optical Nework Topology Design, Shivashis Saha, Eric D. Manley, Jitender S. Deogun Aug 2009

Selection Of Switching Sites In All-Optical Nework Topology Design, Shivashis Saha, Eric D. Manley, Jitender S. Deogun

School of Computing: Technical Reports

In this paper, we consider the problem of topology design for optical networks. We investigate the problem of selecting switching sites to minimize total cost of the optical network. The cost of an optical network can be expressed as a sum of three main factors: the site cost, the link cost, and the switch cost. To the best of our knowledge, this problem has not been studied in its general form as investigated in this paper. We present a mixed integer quadratic programming (MIQP) formulation of the problem to find the optimal value of the total network cost. We also …

Analytic Normal Forms And Symmetries Of Strict Feedforward Control Systems, Issa Amadou Tall, Witold Respondek Aug 2009

Analytic Normal Forms And Symmetries Of Strict Feedforward Control Systems, Issa Amadou Tall, Witold Respondek

Articles and Preprints

This paper deals with the problem of convergence of normal forms of control systems. We identify a $n$-dimensional subclass of control systems, called \emph{special strict feedforward form}, shortly (SSFF), possessing a normal form which is a smooth (resp. analytic) counterpart of the formal normal form of Kang. We provide a constructive algorithm and illustrate by several examples including the Kapitsa pendulum and the Cart-Pole system. The second part of the paper is concerned about symmetries of single-input control systems. We show that any symmetry of a smooth system in special strict feedforward form is conjugated to a \emph{scaling translation} and …

Faculty And Student Perceptions Of The Effects Of Mid-Course Evaluations On Learning And Teaching, Whitney Ransom Aug 2009

Faculty And Student Perceptions Of The Effects Of Mid-Course Evaluations On Learning And Teaching, Whitney Ransom

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to describe the effects of mid-course evaluations on teaching and student learning. A mixed methods approach was used, combining faculty and student surveys, faculty interviews, debriefing sessions, and a comparison of mid-course evaluations scores with end-of-semester scores. Out of 510 section mean scores (128 sections) from faculty members who participated in the study, 352 section mean scores (88 sections, 69%) showed students' perceptions of their own learning improved between the time they completed the mid-course evaluation and the time they completed the end-of-course student rating survey. Results showed when faculty administered a mid-course evaluation, …

Propagation Of Tsunami-Driven Gravity Waves Into The Thermosphere And Ionosphere, Michael P. Hickey, G. Schubert, R. L. Walterscheid Aug 2009

Propagation Of Tsunami-Driven Gravity Waves Into The Thermosphere And Ionosphere, Michael P. Hickey, G. Schubert, R. L. Walterscheid

Publications

Recent observations have revealed large F-region electron density perturbations (~100%) and total electron content (TEC) perturbations (~30%) that appear to be correlated with tsunamis. The characteristic speed and horizontal wavelength of the disturbances are ~200 m/s and ~400 km. We describe numerical simulations using our spectral full-wave model (SFWM) of the upward propagation of a spectrum of gravity waves forced by a tsunami, and the interaction of these waves with the F-region ionosphere. The SFWM describes the propagation of linear, steady-state acoustic-gravity waves in a nonisothermal atmosphere with the inclusion of eddy and molecular diffusion of heat and momentum, ion …

This document is our final report describing the research activities carried out under AFOSR Grant FA9550-06-1-0004. First, descriptions of our cold plasma generation systems are presented. Two systems, developed with past and present AFOSR support, are available in our laboratory. The first is a pulsed device capable of emitting a cold plasma plume in room air. The second is an air plasma generator the core of which is a dielectric barrier discharge excited by a high AC voltage. Following these brief descriptions we first present the effects of an atmospheric pressure air plasma on four different types of eukaryotic microalgae. …

A Low-Signal-To-Noise-Ratio Sensor Framework Incorporating Improved Nighttime Capabilities In Dirsig, Anthony P. Rizzuto Aug 2009

A Low-Signal-To-Noise-Ratio Sensor Framework Incorporating Improved Nighttime Capabilities In Dirsig, Anthony P. Rizzuto

Theses

When designing new remote sensing systems, it is difficult to make apples-to-apples comparisons between designs because of the number of sensor parameters that can affect the final image. Using synthetic imagery and a computer sensor model allows for comparisons to be made between widely different sensor designs or between competing design parameters. Little work has been done in fully modeling low-SNR systems end-to-end for these types of comparisons. Currently DIRSIG has limited capability to accurately model nighttime scenes under new moon conditions or near large cities. An improved DIRSIG scene modeling capability is presented that incorporates all significant sources of …

Army Space Education: Closing The Gap With Operational Space , Thomas Pugsley Aug 2009

Army Space Education: Closing The Gap With Operational Space , Thomas Pugsley

Small Satellite Conference

The Army has made great strides over the last decade to secure a solid foothold and reputation in the space community. Army space professionals have finally gained equity among their peers in the operational space community, and today we see a truly joint space cadre, dedicated to solving tough problems as a team. Unfortunately, the Army has done very little to try to gain equity with its peers concerning space education. This paper outlines the current state of Army Space education, attempting to identify the inequity of space education programs between the services, the impact of this iniquity, as well …

Peak Power Tracking On A Nanosatellite Scale: The Design And Implementation Of Digital Power Electronics On The Sfl Generic Nanosatellite Bus, Grant Bonin, Doug Sinclair, Robert Zee

Small Satellite Conference

This paper describes the design and implementation of an advanced high-performance nanosatellite power system, with an emphasis on its battery management and peak power tracking (PPT) capabilities. This power system has been developed for the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies‘ Space Flight Laboratory (UTIAS/SFL) Generic Nanosatellite Bus (GNB), which has enabled a wide variety of new space applications on a small scale. The GNB has a 20cm cubical form factor with no deployed solar arrays, making it inherently power-limited. Consequently, the need to accommodate relatively high powered payloads for multi-year missions has dic-tated the need for maximum utilization …

Advanced Hardware-In-The-Loop Rf Testing Assures Communication System Mission Success, Steve Williams Aug 2009

Advanced Hardware-In-The-Loop Rf Testing Assures Communication System Mission Success, Steve Williams

Small Satellite Conference

Robust Radio Frequency (RF) Communication Systems (COMMS) are vital to the success of every satellite mission. But, most RF COMMS links are subject to a wide variety of signal impairments, many of which are particularly acute with small satellites. Powerful RF COMMS modeling and simulation techniques have emerged to assure the performance of these vital communications systems. Even greater assurance is possible when real-world RF signals are directly generated by the same modeling and simulation systems, and are liberally used for component-level and full-system test. For effective and full-coverage flight COMMS and/or ground COMMS testing, RF Channel Simulators must augment …

Lithium-Ion Technology: Balancing Increased System Capability With The Potential For Explosion, Jeremy Neubauer, Chris Pearson, Ka Lok Ng Aug 2009

Lithium-Ion Technology: Balancing Increased System Capability With The Potential For Explosion, Jeremy Neubauer, Chris Pearson, Ka Lok Ng

Small Satellite Conference

The push to increase the capability of satellites has driven significant increases in space battery performance over the past fifty years, progressing to the use of today’s state of the art technology: Lithium-ion. To date Lithium-ion batteries have flown on many missions and have demonstrated their tremendous potential to increase the capability of both large and small satellite technologies. However, recent events in the consumer electronics industry have highlighted the risk of this technology when handled improperly, and several factors are currently combining that increase both the likelihood and hazard of a battery failure: the larger size of spacecraft batteries in …

Ruminococcus flavefaciens is a predominant cellulolytic rumen bacterium, which forms a multi-enzyme cellulosome complex that could play an integral role in the ability of this bacterium to degrade plant cell wall polysaccharides. Identifying the major enzyme types involved in plant cell wall degradation is essential for gaining a better understanding of the cellulolytic capabilities of this organism as well as highlighting potential enzymes for application in improvement of livestock nutrition and for conversion of cellulosic biomass to liquid fuels.

How Plastic Is Vendobionta Morphology? A Geometric Morphometric Study Of Two Groups Of Pteridinium From The Latest Neoproterozoic, Michael B. Meyer Aug 2009

How Plastic Is Vendobionta Morphology? A Geometric Morphometric Study Of Two Groups Of Pteridinium From The Latest Neoproterozoic, Michael B. Meyer

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The analysis and interpretation of Vendobionta morphology is critical to elucidating a range of issues about their ontogeny and evolution, as well as life habits. These analyses, however, are complicated because these organisms are often morphologically enigmatic and defy ready categorization within modern taxonomic schemes. This study delves into the morphology of one of these problematic groups: Pteridinium. Specimens were investigated from two localities, Namibia and North Carolina, using geometric morphometrics. The landmark data, which was analyzed to compare specimens based on locality, taphonomy, and preservation, were subjected to three statistical tests: Principle Components Analysis, Procrustes shape analyses, and …

Scan-Based Near-Field Acoustical Holography On Partially Correlated Sources, Michael D. Gardner Aug 2009

Scan-Based Near-Field Acoustical Holography On Partially Correlated Sources, Michael D. Gardner

Theses and Dissertations

Scan-based near-field acoustical holography (NAH) is applied to partially correlated sources. Partial field decomposition via the virtual coherence method is used to implement the scan-based NAH. The background and theory of these methods are developed. Multiple stationary reference microphones are required for the partial field decomposition. Guidelines for reference microphone placement in the literature thus far have been limited. Improved guidelines for reference microphones are given after the results of two sets of experiments. The first set involves discrete, partially correlated sources, both physical and numerical. The second set of experiments is strictly numerical and involves continuous sources. Fewer microphones …
