E-Content: Student Content Creators: Convergence Of Literacies, Joan K. Lippincott

Faculty Journal Articles

There is ample evidence that students are creating all types of digital content and disseminating it via the Internet. When they graduate from universities and colleges and enter such fields as business, education, government, medicine, research, or the arts, they will continue to produce digital content. Employers often select new graduates for positions in the expectation that they will take on technology-intensive assignments related to the Web presence of the organization. While in school, many students create digital materials without guidance from faculty, information technologists, or librarians, but such products are typically recreational and do not have the hallmarks of …

Theses and Dissertations

The need for reliable, high-throughput, mobile wireless communication technologies has never been greater as increases in the demand for on-the-go access to information, entertainment, and other electronic services continues. Two such technologies, which are at the forefront of current research efforts, are orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, their union being known simply as MIMO-OFDM. The successful performance of these technologies depends upon the availability of accurate information concerning the wireless communication channel. In this dissertation, several issues related to quality of this channel state information (CSI) are studied. Specifically, the first part of this dissertation …

Considering The Role Of Modeling In Economic Forecasting, Jerzy Bogdanienko

European Management Studies

The article points out the complexity of the information system needed to be dealt with when describing the functioning of a company, additionally taking into consideration the whole - even more complex - weave of information that characterizes its environment. Against this background, an information gap emerges, resulting in the low accuracy of forecasting analyses conducted on the company level. The situation is conducive to the creation of speculative, synthetic thought models, enabling for the more effective grasping of substantial details and the merging thereof. They are helpful when forecasting, how ever usually also ambiguous and potentially erroneous, because the simplifications …

Viscosity Dependent Liquid Slip At Molecularly Smooth Hydrophobic Surfaces, Sean P. Mcbride, Bruce M. Law Dec 2009

Viscosity Dependent Liquid Slip At Molecularly Smooth Hydrophobic Surfaces, Sean P. Mcbride, Bruce M. Law

Physics Faculty Research

Colloidal probe atomic force microscopy is used to study the slip behavior of 18 Newtonian liquids from two homologous series, the n-alkanes and n-alcohols, at molecularly smooth hydrophobic n-hexadecyltrichlorosilane coated surfaces. We find that the slip behavior is governed by the bulk viscosity η of the liquid, specifically, the slip length b∼ηx with x∼0.33. Additionally, the slip length was found to be shear rate independent, validating the use of Vinogradova slip theory in this work.

Optical Properties Of Semiconducting Boron Carbide For Neutron Detection Applications, Ravi B. Billa Dec 2009

Optical Properties Of Semiconducting Boron Carbide For Neutron Detection Applications, Ravi B. Billa

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Solid state neutron detection devices based on semiconducting boron carbide have the potential for nearly ideal neutron detection effciency for thermal neutrons. The present work is focused on characterizing optical properties of this semiconducting boron carbide material as a step in further development of the material for neutron detection and other applications.

Semiconducting boron carbide films were grown on silicon substrates using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition and their optical properties were characterized using variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry over a wide spectral range, from mid-infrared to vacuum-ultraviolet wavelengths. The effects of deposition substrate temperature and of post-deposition heat treatments on …

Multidimensional Methods: Applications In Drug-Enzyme Intrinsic Clearance Determination And Comprehensive Two-Dimensional Liquid Chromatography Peak Volume Determination, Dennis Thekkudan Dec 2009

Multidimensional Methods: Applications In Drug-Enzyme Intrinsic Clearance Determination And Comprehensive Two-Dimensional Liquid Chromatography Peak Volume Determination, Dennis Thekkudan

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of the first project was to evaluate strategies for determining the in vitro intrinsic clearance (CLint) of dextrorphan (DR) as metabolized by the UGT2B7 enzyme to obtain dextrorphan glucuronide (DR-G). A direct injection liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) method was used to monitor products using the pseudo-first-order (PFO) model. Standard enzymatic incubations were also quantified using LC-MS. These data were fit utilizing both PFO and Michaelis-Menten (MM) models to determine estimates of kinetic parameters. The CLint was determined to be 0.28 (± 0.08) µL/min/mg protein for a baculovirus insect cell-expressed UGT2B7 enzyme. This is the first confirmation that dextrorphan …

Noninvasive Estimation Of Pulmonary Artery Pressure Using Heart Sound Analysis, Aaron W. Dennis Dec 2009

Noninvasive Estimation Of Pulmonary Artery Pressure Using Heart Sound Analysis, Aaron W. Dennis

Theses and Dissertations

Right-heart catheterization is the most accurate method for estimating pulmonary artery pressure (PAP). Because it is an invasive procedure it is expensive, exposes patients to the risk of infection, and is not suited for long-term monitoring situations. Medical researchers have shown that PAP influences the characteristics of heart sounds. This suggests that heart sound analysis is a potential noninvasive solution to the PAP estimation problem. This thesis describes the development of a prototype system, called PAPEr, which estimates PAP noninvasively using heart sound analysis. PAPEr uses patient data with machine learning algorithms to build models of how PAP affects heart …

Developing The Nomological Network Of Perceived Corporate Affinity For Technology: A Three Essay Dissertation, David Earl Fleming Dec 2009

Developing The Nomological Network Of Perceived Corporate Affinity For Technology: A Three Essay Dissertation, David Earl Fleming

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Technology is changing the face of both the sales and service domains. Honebein and Cammarano (2006) note that properly implemented self-service technologies serve dual purposes of decreasing firm overhead costs, while simultaneously engaging the customer in a way encourages the co-create of value for both parties. To get these benefits stakeholders must be willing to adopt and use the technologies that are available.

Traditionally, this has lead to the research question "How do firms do this?" However, according to a recent article by Woodall, Colby and Parasuraman (2007), consumers are now demanding more technology-based options and becoming more technologically savvy. …

A Pedagogical And Educational Examination Of The First Month At The Piano By Mana-Zucca, Laura Helene Keith Dec 2009

A Pedagogical And Educational Examination Of The First Month At The Piano By Mana-Zucca, Laura Helene Keith

Open Access Dissertations

The First Month at the Piano by Mana-Zucca, published in 1935, is a pioneering piano method to be taught by rote, supporting sound before sight learning theories, to the pre-school student. It differs from the Suzuki method in that The First Month at the Piano uses short, repetitive patterns, intrinsic to the Edwin Gordon Music Learning Theory. The First Month at the Piano has been compared to educational theories and has been found to follow Lev Vygotsky's theory of scaffolding and Jerome Bruner's principles of structure, readiness for learning, and motivation. The First Month at the Piano has been shown …

Speaker Authentication Using Vector Quantization, Bushra Q. Al-Abudi, Mohammed S. Mahdi Dec 2009

Speaker Authentication Using Vector Quantization, Bushra Q. Al-Abudi, Mohammed S. Mahdi

Baghdad Science Journal

In this paper, the role of the vector quantization in the speaker authentication system was studied. Vector quantization based speaker authentication system was considered in two phases; training and testing. The training phase concerned with enrolling the speaker models to build the codebook. The codebook generated from a set of feature vectors belong to each sample of speaker's voice. The testing phase includes matching the unknown input speaker with the models. The matching is performed by evaluating the similarity measure between the unknown speech sample and the models in the speaker database to authenticate the input speaker. A weighted similarity …

Efficient Implementation Of Raid-6 Encoding And Decoding On A Field Programmable Gate Array (Fpga), David Jacob Dec 2009

Efficient Implementation Of Raid-6 Encoding And Decoding On A Field Programmable Gate Array (Fpga), David Jacob

Theses and Dissertations

RAID-6 is a data encoding scheme used to provide single drive error detection and dual drive error correction for data redundancy on an array of disks. Here we present a thorough study of efficient implementations of RAID-6 on field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). Since RAID-6 relies heavily on Galois Field Algebra (GFA), an efficient implementation of a GFA FPGA library is also presented. Through rigorous performance analysis, this work shows the most efficient ways to tradeoff FPGA resources and execution time when implementing GFA functions as well as RAID-6 encoding and decoding.

Temporal Awareness And Rhythmic Performance, Daniel J. Colombo Dec 2009

Temporal Awareness And Rhythmic Performance, Daniel J. Colombo

Theses

The objective of this research was to study the conditions under which rhythmic behavior arises and its effects on task performance and mental workload. It has been demonstrated that temporal awareness (TA) in dynamic systems draws on high-level mental resources and contributes to superior performance on some task elements but not others. Elsewhere it has been demonstrated that TA in environments with high predictability can lead to superior task performance and reduced mental workload. This research sought to examine the behavior and subsequent performance that arises under highly predictable vs. dynamic conditions. Using a computer-based time-sharing task, we analyzed task …

Analyzing Spatial Patterns In Reefscape Ecology Via Remote Sensing, Benthic Habitat Mapping, And Morphometrics, Shanna K. Dunn Dec 2009

Analyzing Spatial Patterns In Reefscape Ecology Via Remote Sensing, Benthic Habitat Mapping, And Morphometrics, Shanna K. Dunn

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

A growing number of scientists are investigating applications of landscape ecology principles to marine studies, yet few coral reef scientists have examined spatial patterns across entire reefscapes with a holistic ecosystem-based view. This study was an effort to better understand reefscape ecology by quantitatively assessing spatial structures and habitat arrangements using remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS).

Quantifying recurring patterns in reef systems has implications for improving the efficiency of mapping efforts and lowering costs associated with collecting field data and acquiring satellite imagery. If a representative example of a reef is mapped with high accuracy, the data derived …
