Aesthetics Of The Female Breast: Correlation Of Pluralistic Evaluations With Volume And Surface Area, Yuen-Jong Liu Nov 2009

Aesthetics Of The Female Breast: Correlation Of Pluralistic Evaluations With Volume And Surface Area, Yuen-Jong Liu

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The goal of cosmetic and reconstructive breast surgery is to fashion symmetric breasts with aesthetically acceptable shapes. Breast shape is largely determined by volume of tissue and surface area of the skin envelope. Values for breast surface area have never been published in the literature. The investigators developed an inexpensive, non-invasive optical method to objectively measure breast volume and surface area. The aims were to validate the method, to assess the accuracy of visual inspection by plastic surgeons, to determine ideal anthropomorphic measurements, and to derive a mathematical relationship between volume and surface area for an aesthetically acceptable shape. In …

The Cost-Effectiveness Of Alternative Hiv Intervention Portfolios In South Africa, Robert Stavert Nov 2009

The Cost-Effectiveness Of Alternative Hiv Intervention Portfolios In South Africa, Robert Stavert

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The Cost-effectiveness of Alternative HIV Intervention Portfolios in South Africa. Robert Stavert and Elisa Long (Sponsored by David Paltiel). Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, Yale University, School of Medicine, New Haven, Ct. A dynamic compartmental model was instantiated with recent epidemiological data from South Africa to compare the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of different portfolios of interventions to prevent HIV infection over a twenty year time horizon. We hypothesized that portfolios which combined scaling up the delivery of highly active antiretroviral therapies (HAART), increasing availability of HIV screening and counseling, and establishing widespread circumcision campaigns would be the most effective …

Earth Sciences

In-situ airborne measurements of trace gases, aerosol size distributions, chemistry and optical properties were conducted over Mexico and the Eastern North Pacific during MILAGRO and INTEX-B. Heterogeneous reactions between secondary aerosol precursor gases and mineral dust lead to sequestration of sulfur, nitrogen and chlorine in the supermicrometer particulate size range.

Simultaneous measurements of aerosol size distributions and weak-acid soluble calcium result in an estimate of 11 wt% of CaCO3 for Asian dust. During transport across the North Pacific, ∼5ĝ€ "30% of the CaCO3 is converted to CaSO4 or Ca(NO 3)2 with an additional ∼4% consumed through reactions with HCl. The …

Katana: A Hot Patching Framework For Elf Executables, Ashwin Ramaswamy, Sergey Bratus, Michael E. Locasto, Sean W. Smith

Computer Science Technical Reports

Despite advances in software modularity, security, and reliability, offline patching remains the predominant form of updating or protecting commodity software. Unfortunately, the mechanics of hot patching (the process of upgrading a program while it executes) remain understudied, even though such a capability offers practical benefits for both consumer and mission-critical systems. A reliable hot patching procedure would serve particularly well by reducing the downtime necessary for critical functionality or security upgrades. Yet, hot patching also carries the risk -- real or perceived -- of leaving the system in an inconsistent state, which leads many owners to forego its benefits as …

The Importance Of Fallback Foods In Primate Ecology And Evolution, Paul J. Constantino, Barth W. Wright Nov 2009

The Importance Of Fallback Foods In Primate Ecology And Evolution, Paul J. Constantino, Barth W. Wright

Biological Sciences Faculty Research

The role of fallback foods in shaping primate ranging, socioecology, and morphology has recently become a topic of particular interest to biological anthropologists. Although the use of fallback resources has been noted in the ecological and primatological literature for a number of decades, few attempts have been made to define fallback foods or to explore the utility of this concept for primate evolutionary biologists and ecologists. As a preface to this special issue of the American Journal of Physical Anthropology devoted to the topic of fallback foods in primate ecology and evolution, we discuss the development and use of the …

A Computational Kinematics And Evolutionary Approach To Model Molecular Flexibility For Bionanotechnology, Athina N. Brintaki Nov 2009

A Computational Kinematics And Evolutionary Approach To Model Molecular Flexibility For Bionanotechnology, Athina N. Brintaki

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Modeling molecular structures is critical for understanding the principles that govern the behavior of molecules and for facilitating the exploration of potential pharmaceutical drugs and nanoscale designs. Biological molecules are flexible bodies that can adopt many different shapes (or conformations) until they reach a stable molecular state that is usually described by the minimum internal energy. A major challenge in modeling flexible molecules is the exponential explosion in computational complexity as the molecular size increases and many degrees of freedom are considered to represent the molecules' flexibility. This research work proposes a novel generic computational geometric approach called enhanced BioGeoFilter …

Effects Of Ph On Calcium Carbonate Precipitation Under Magnetic Field, Nelson Saksono, Yuliusman Yuliusman, Setijo Bismo, Roekmijati W. Soemantojo, Azwar Manaf

Makara Journal of Technology

Magnetic field effect on CaCO3 precipitation is the key parameter in evaluating the effectiveness of Anti-scale Magnetic Treatment (AMT). The purpose of this study was to investigate magnetic fields influence on CaCO3 precipitation in high and low super-saturated CaCO3 solution by varied pH CaCO3 solution using circulation flow fluid system. The observation results in the high super saturated solution (pH 8.5) showed the increase of precipited CaCO3 in magnetized solutions compared to those in non-magnetic solution during circulation process. In the low super-saturated CaCO3 solution (pH 6.4) it was found that magnetic treatment increased CaCO3 precipitation after circulation process. In …

Anisotropic Acid Catalyst Displacement In A Chemically Amplified Photoresist Via Application Of An Electric Field, Ward A. Johnson Nov 2009

Anisotropic Acid Catalyst Displacement In A Chemically Amplified Photoresist Via Application Of An Electric Field, Ward A. Johnson

Theses

Electrostatic force theory and Fickean diffusion theory both predict that anisotropic movement can be conveyed to chemically amplified resist (CAR) acid catalysts via an electric field during the post exposure bake (PEB). A demonstration of this effect was attempted through photoresist thickness loss measurements with and without the addition of an electric field. The experimental design underwent multiple evolutionary iterations and measured as much as 86 nm of additional thickness loss with the presence of an electric field compared to a PEB control. Repeatability was inconsistent and several principal assumptions were found to be in violation. From measurements of current …

Classifying Sentence-Based Summaries Of Web Documents, Yiu-Kai D. Ng, Maria Soledad Pera Nov 2009

Classifying Sentence-Based Summaries Of Web Documents, Yiu-Kai D. Ng, Maria Soledad Pera

Faculty Publications

Text classification categorizes Web documents in large collections into predefined classes based on their contents. Unfortunately, the classification process can be time-consuming and users are still required to spend considerable amount of time scanning through the classified Web documents to identify the ones that satisfy their information needs. In solving this problem, we first introduce CorSum, an extractive single-document summarization approach, which is simple and effective in performing the summarization task, since it only relies on word similarity to generate high-quality summaries. Hereafter, we train a Naïve Bayes classifier on CorSum-generated summaries and verify the classification accuracy using the summaries …

Theory Of Transient Streaming Potentials Associated With Axial-Symmetric Flow In Unconfined Aquifers, Bwalya Malama, Kristopher L. Kuhlman, André Revil Nov 2009

Theory Of Transient Streaming Potentials Associated With Axial-Symmetric Flow In Unconfined Aquifers, Bwalya Malama, Kristopher L. Kuhlman, André Revil

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

We present a semi-analytical solution for the transient streaming potential response of an unconfined aquifer to continuous constant rate pumping. We assume that flow occurs without leakage from the unit below a transverse anisotropic aquifer and neglect flow in the unsaturated zone by treating the water-table as a moving material boundary. In the development of the solution to the streaming potential problem, we impose insulating boundary conditions at land surface and the lower boundary of the lower confining unit. We solve the problem exactly in the double Laplace—Hankel transform space and obtain the inverse transforms numerically. The solution is used …

Radiation Force Of Scalar And Electromagnetic Twisted Gaussian Schell-Model Beams, Chengliang Zhao, Yangjian Cai, Olga Korotkova Nov 2009

Radiation Force Of Scalar And Electromagnetic Twisted Gaussian Schell-Model Beams, Chengliang Zhao, Yangjian Cai, Olga Korotkova

Physics Articles and Papers

Radiation force of a focused scalar twisted Gaussian Schell-model (TGSM) beam on a Rayleigh dielectric sphere is investigated. It is found that the twist phase affects the radiation force and by raising the absolute value of the twist factor it is possible to increase both transverse and longitudinal trapping ranges at the real focus where the maximum on-axis intensity is located. Numerical calculations of radiation forces induced by a focused electromagnetic TGSM beam on a Rayleigh dielectric sphere are carried out. It is found that radiation force is closely related to the twist phase, degree of polarization and correlation factors …

It was hypothesized that people who were able to solve a problem by applying a stereotype will experience more positive affect compared to people who could not, and that the relationship between stereotyping and mood was mediated by effort and by certainty. 70 undergraduates were asked to predict the academic trajectory of a college applicant based on information provided by a typed college application form and by an essay. For half the participants the applicant was identified as Asian; for the others, the applicant was Anglo. The essay provided information that …

Control Of Electrochemical And Ferryloxy Formation Kinetics Of Cyt P450s In Polyion Films By Heme Iron Spin State And Secondary Structure, Sadagopan Krishnan, Amila Abeykoon, John B. Schenkman, James F. Rusling Nov 2009

Control Of Electrochemical And Ferryloxy Formation Kinetics Of Cyt P450s In Polyion Films By Heme Iron Spin State And Secondary Structure, Sadagopan Krishnan, Amila Abeykoon, John B. Schenkman, James F. Rusling

UCHC Articles - Research

Voltammetry of cytochrome P450 (cyt P450) enzymes in ultrathin films with polyions was related for the first time to electronic and secondary structure. Heterogeneous electron transfer (hET) rate constants for reduction of the cyt P450s depended on heme iron spin state, with low spin cyt P450cam giving a value 40-fold larger than high spin human cyt P450 1A2, with mixed spin human P450 cyt 2E1 at an intermediate value. Asymmetric reduction–oxidation peak separations with increasing scan rates were explained by simulations featuring faster oxidation than reduction. Results are consistent with a square scheme in which oxidized and reduced forms of …

The Fundamental Plane Of Accretion Onto Black Holes With Dynamical Masses, Kayhan Gültekin, Edward M. Cackett, Jon M. Miller, Tiziana Di Matteo, Sera Markoff, Douglas O. Richstone

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research Publications

Black hole accretion and jet production are areas of intensive study in astrophysics. Recent work has found a relation between radio luminosity, X-ray luminosity, and black hole mass. With the assumption that radio and X-ray luminosities are suitable proxies for jet power and accretion power, respectively, a broad fundamental connection between accretion and jet production is implied. In an effort to refine these links and enhance their power, we have explored the above relations exclusively among black holes with direct, dynamical mass-measurements. This approach not only eliminates systematic errors incurred through the use of secondary mass measurements, but also effectively …
