A Secure Group Communication Architecture For Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, Adrian N. Phillips, Barry Mullins, Richard Raines, Rusty O. Baldwin

Computer Science Faculty Publications

This paper investigates the application of a secure group communication architecture to a swarm of autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). A multicast secure group communication architecture for the low earth orbit (LEO) satellite environment is evaluated to determine if it can be effectively adapted to a swarm of UAVs and provide secure, scalable, and efficient communications. The performance of the proposed security architecture is evaluated with two other commonly used architectures using a discrete event computer simulation developed using MATLAB. Performance is evaluated in terms of the scalability and efficiency of the group key distribution and management scheme when the …

Vertical Structure Of Bottom Ekman Tidal Flows: Observations, Theory, And Modeling From The Northern Adriatic, J. W. Book, P. J. Martin, I. Janeković, M. Kuzmić, Mark Wimbush Jan 2009

Vertical Structure Of Bottom Ekman Tidal Flows: Observations, Theory, And Modeling From The Northern Adriatic, J. W. Book, P. J. Martin, I. Janeković, M. Kuzmić, Mark Wimbush

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

From September 2002 to May 2003, fifteen bottom‐mounted, acoustic Doppler current profilers measured currents of the northern Adriatic basin. Tidal fluctuations at all seven of the major Adriatic frequencies were synthesized from a response tidal analysis of these measurements. Most observed tidal current ellipses were nearly reversing, but near the bottom, tidal current ellipses all shortened and broadened, semidiurnal currents led upper water column currents, and diurnal tidal current ellipse orientations rotated counterclockwise toward the bottom. Theoretical solutions for a tidally forced, bottom Ekman layer with vertical eddy viscosity of the form Az = βz + k were least …

Understanding The Practice Of Teacher Educators In Implementing The Intel® Teach Essentials Pre Service Course In Pakistan, Nelofer Halai, Ratan Salem, Nasira Gardezi

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

This paper focuses on understanding the practice of teacher educators in implementing the Intel® Teach Essentials Course at four sites in the provinces of Punjab and Sindh in Pakistan. The focus is on teacher educators’ practices rather that the practice of teachers and hence the research sites selected for the study are teacher education institutions where the Intel® Teach Program is being implemented for teaching prospective teachers. A qualitative study was undertaken selecting 21 teacher educators and interviewing them on key objectives of the Intel Teach program. The findings are encouraging, and show that teachers in both rural and urban …

Seasonal Changes In Depth Of Water Uptake For Encroaching Trees Juniperus Virginiana And Pinus Ponderosa And Two Dominant C4 Grasses In A Semiarid Grassland, Kathleen D. Eggemeyer, Tala Awada, F. Edwin Harvey, David A. Wedin, Xinhua Zhou, C. William Zanner

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

We used the natural abundance of stable isotopic ratios of hydrogen and oxygen in soil (0.05–3 m depth), plant xylem and precipitation to determine the seasonal changes in sources of soil water uptake by two native encroaching woody species (Pinus ponderosa P. & C. Lawson, Juniperus virginiana L.), and two C4 grasses (Schizachyrium scoparium (Michx.) Nash, Panicum virgatum L.), in the semiarid Sandhills grasslands of Nebraska. Grass species extracted most of their water from the upper soil profile (0.05–0.5 m). Soil water uptake from below 0.5 m depth increased under drought, but appeared to be minimal in …

Isolation And Analysis Of Cyanobacterial Dna, Tiffany Crosby Jan 2009

Isolation And Analysis Of Cyanobacterial Dna, Tiffany Crosby

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Cyanobacteria are a phylum of bacteria that possess a diverse number of biological characteristics. One of the evolutionary innovations of the cyanobacteria are its ability to perform oxygenating photosynthesis, which all cyanobacteria are able to perform. It is believed that a form of metabolism became the dominant method for producting fixed carbon from carbon dioxide (CO2) at around 3.5 billion years ago. Instead of using hydrogen sulfide, whose generated waste products were difficult to eliminate, the photosynthetic cyanobacteria used water as their hydrogen source (1). Many cyanobacteria are also capable of fixing atmospheric nitrogen (2). Cyanobacteria are present …

Isothermal Titration Calorimetry Studies Of Protein-Mediated Interactions And Preliminary Structural Studies Of Tandem Pdz1-2 Domain Of Psd-95 Protein, Ana Jankovic Jan 2009

Isothermal Titration Calorimetry Studies Of Protein-Mediated Interactions And Preliminary Structural Studies Of Tandem Pdz1-2 Domain Of Psd-95 Protein, Ana Jankovic

Wayne State University Dissertations

Protein-mediated interactions that involve multiple ligands in their binding mechanisms are critical for many cellular functions. The primary focus of this dissertation research was to investigate such interactions for two proteins, the PDZ domain and frataxin, involving peptide and metal binding ligands, respectively. The three component projects of this work comprised (1) thermodynamic analysis of PDZ domain binding using calorimetry; (2) X-ray crystallographic structural studies of a PDZ dual domain; and (3) thermodynamic analysis of frataxin binding to iron. The specific goal of the research conducted with the PDZ domains was to understand the mechanism of action of multiple/tandem protein …

One Of These Things Is Not Like The Other: Art Education And The Symbolic Interaction Of Bodies And Self-Images, James H. Rolling Jr. Jan 2009

One Of These Things Is Not Like The Other: Art Education And The Symbolic Interaction Of Bodies And Self-Images, James H. Rolling Jr.

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

This article begins with the premise that self-imagery is constituted as a shape-shifting aggregate of symbolic systems that incorporates the human body itself as one of its representations. At intermittent points of the body's embodiment of visual culture and tacit social experience, alternative representations accrete into varying symbolic systems, the multiple shapes a self-image may take over a lifetime. Given that social identity is derived from the interaction of various symbolic systems, how do some bodies and self-images come to be taken as that of identities incompatible with most others? In this exploration of the self-image and identity, the author …

Developing Leadership In A National Cohort Of Secondary Biology Teachers: Uses Of An On-Line Course Structure To Develop Geographically Distant Professional Learning Community, P. Balcerzak, V. May, B. Schaal

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

This report is a descriptive study of the role that on-line courses might have on the development of Professional Learning Communities (PLC’s) that support national leadership initiatives of participating high school biology teachers. The one hundred teachers involved in the Life Sciences for a Global Community (LSGC) Institute are expected not only to deepen their content knowledge, but also impact their district and state biology curricula. Additionally, the dispersion of Institute participants across the country presents a unique opportunity to develop, communicate. and implement a national coherent reform agenda. However, the geographic distance presents a barrier to collaborative design of …

This article includes stories of individual teachers who refused to sacrifice hours of …

Helping Kindergarteners Make Sense Of Numbers To 100, L. B. Jaslow, V. R. Jacobs Jan 2009

Helping Kindergarteners Make Sense Of Numbers To 100, L. B. Jaslow, V. R. Jacobs

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

The authors share what was learned about kindergarteners' abilities to make sense of numbers to 100 when one of the authors, Linda Jaslow, took over a kindergarten class from February through the end of the school year. Through examples of how she engaged her students in nine weeks of problem solving and discussions focused on making sense of the number system, we provide evidence that the children grew substantially in their ability to count and show understanding when counting by 10's and using 10's during problem solving. Suggestions for tasks to promote continued growth are also provided. Throughout this teaching …

The Author's Rights In Literary And Artistic Works, Alina Ng Jan 2009

The Author's Rights In Literary And Artistic Works, Alina Ng

Journal Articles

Authorship and creativity are products of authentic human expression that the law must encourage in order for works to be produced. The commercial market for literary and artistic works encourages the creation of diverse works to meet popular consumer demand. Focus on popular demand may, however, result in works that lack social, educational and cultural value or utility. Natural law philosophy suggests that the copyright system should be an ethical and moral institution that would, in turn, promote the progress of society through authentic authorship. While economic incentives offer authors market rewards that may facilitate the creation and dissemination, economic …

Electron-Impact Excitation Of O Ii Fine-Structure Levels, R. Kisielius, P. J. Storey, Gary J. Ferland, F. P. Keenan

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Effective collision strengths for forbidden transitions among the five energetically lowest fine-structure levels of O II are calculated in the Breit–Pauli approximation using the R-matrix method. Results are presented for the electron temperature range 100–100 000 K. The accuracy of the calculations is evaluated via the use of different types of radial orbital sets and a different configuration expansion basis for the target wavefunctions. A detailed assessment of previous available data is given, and erroneous results are highlighted. Our results reconfirm the validity of the original Seaton and Osterbrock scaling for the optical O II ratio, a matter of some …

Three Stories And Their Morals, Robert B. Bennett Jan 2009

Three Stories And Their Morals, Robert B. Bennett

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

Fundamentally, the common law tradition is a collection of stories. Stories also become the law professor's stock in trade. We tell students stories or have them read stories in the form of cases or hypothetical situations and help them discern the morals to the stories-i.e., what the stories mean in the context of business or in their business lives? In a sense, that is what the Socratic Method is all about: analyzing stories in the form of cases and discerning their greater meaning. In this paper I will relate three true stories within the context of just-in-time production management and …

Methyl And T-Butyl Reorientation In An Organic Molecular Solid, Peter A. Beckmann, William G. Dougherty Jr., W. Scott Kassel Jan 2009

Methyl And T-Butyl Reorientation In An Organic Molecular Solid, Peter A. Beckmann, William G. Dougherty Jr., W. Scott Kassel

Physics Faculty Research and Scholarship

We have determined the molecular and crystal structure of 4,5-dibromo-2,7-di-t-butyl-9,9-dimethylxanthene and measured the 1H spin–lattice relaxation rate from 87 to 270 K at NMR frequencies of ω/2π=8.50, 22.5, and 53.0 MHz. All molecules in the crystal see the same intra and intermolecular environment and the repeating unit is half a molecule. We have extended models developed for 1H spin–lattice relaxation resulting from the reorientation of a t-butyl group and its constituent methyl groups to include these rotors and the 9-methyl groups. The relaxation rate data is well-fitted assuming that the t-butyl groups and …
