Atmospheric parameters, such as pressure (P), temperature (T) and density (ρ ∝ P / T), affect the development of extensive air showers initiated by energetic cosmic rays. We have studied the impact of atmospheric variations on extensive air showers by means of the surface detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory. The rate of events shows a ∼ 10 % seasonal modulation and ∼ 2 % diurnal one. We find that the observed behaviour is explained by a model including the effects associated with the variations of P and ρ. The former affects the longitudinal development of air showers while the …

Unavoidable Parallel Minors Of 4-Connected Graphs, Carolyn Chun, Guoli Ding, Bogdan Oporowski, Dirk Vertigan

Faculty Publications

A parallel minor is obtained from a graph by any sequence of edge contractions and parallel edge deletions. We prove that, for any positive integer k, every internally 4-connected graph of sufficiently high order contains a parallel minor isomorphic to a variation of K4,kwith a complete graph on the vertices of degree k, the k-partition triple fan with a complete graph on the vertices of degree k, the k-spoke double wheel, the k-spoke double wheel with axle, the (2k+1)-rung Mö bius zigzag ladder, the (2k)- rung zigzag ladder, or Kk.We also find the unavoidable parallel minors of 1-, 2-, and …

The 2008 NRDA conference introduced the Numerical INJection Analysis project (NINJA), a new collaborative effort between the numerical relativity community and the data analysis community. NINJA focuses on modeling and searching for gravitational wave signatures from the coalescence of binary system of compact objects. We review the scope of this collaboration and the components of the first NINJA project, where numerical relativity groups, shared waveforms and data analysis teams applied various techniques to detect them when embedded in colored Gaussian noise. © 2009 IOP Publishing Ltd.

The Numerical INJection Analysis (NINJA) project is a collaborative effort between members of the numerical relativity and gravitational-wave data analysis communities. The purpose of NINJA is to study the sensitivity of existing gravitational-wave search algorithms using numerically generated waveforms and to foster closer collaboration between the numerical relativity and data analysis communities. We describe the results of the first NINJA analysis which focused on gravitational waveforms from binary black hole coalescence. Ten numerical relativity groups contributed numerical data which were used to generate a set of gravitational-wave signals. These signals were injected into a simulated data set, designed to mimic …

Stabilization In A Two-Species Chemostat With Monod Growth Functions, Frédéric Mazenc, Michael Malisoff, Jérôme Harmand Jan 2009

Stabilization In A Two-Species Chemostat With Monod Growth Functions, Frédéric Mazenc, Michael Malisoff, Jérôme Harmand

Faculty Publications

We design feedback controllers for two species chemostats so that an equilibrium with arbitrary prescribed positive species concentrations becomes globally asymptotically stable. We use a new global explicit strict Lyapunov function construction, which allows us to quantify the effects of disturbances using the input-to-state stability paradigm. We assume that only a linear combination of the species concentrations is known. We illustrate our approach using a numerical example. © 2009, IEEE. All rights reserved.

Orbital Periods For Three Recurrent Novae, Bradley E. Schaefer Jan 2009

Orbital Periods For Three Recurrent Novae, Bradley E. Schaefer

Faculty Publications

I report on the discovery of the orbital periods of three recurrent novae in our Galaxy. V745 Sco has an orbital period of 510 20 days with ellipsoidal modulations, based on SMARTS photometry from 2004-2008. V3890 Sgr has an orbital period of 519.7 0.3 days with ellipsoidal modulations and a shallow eclipse, based primarily on SMARTS and AAVSO photometry from 1995-2008, but also extending back to 1899 with archival plates. In addition, a sinusoidal modulation of amplitude 0.2 mag and period 103.8 0.4 days is seen mainly in the red, with this attributed to ordinary pulsations in the giant companion …

We report on a complete set of early optical afterglows of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) obtained with the Robotic Optical Transient Search Experiment (ROTSE-III) telescope network from 2005 March through 2007 June. This set is comprised of 12 afterglows with early optical and Swift/X-Ray Telescope observations, with a median ROTSE-III response time of 45 s after the start of γ-ray emission (8 s after the GCN notice time). These afterglows span 4 orders of magnitude in optical luminosity, and the contemporaneous X-ray detections allow multi-wavelength spectral analysis. Excluding X-ray flares, the broadband synchrotron spectra show that the optical and X-ray emission …

Creep Behavior Of Borate-Treated Strandboard: Effect Of Zinc Borate Retention, Wood Species, And Load Level, Qinglin Wu, Jong N. Lee, Zhiyong Cai, Dingguo Zhou

Faculty Publications

Creep performance of zinc borate-treated strandboard from southern pine (Pinus taeda L.) and red oak (Quercus falcata) was investigated at 25oC temperature and 65% relative humidity. It was shown that the borate treatment had some significant effect on creep deflection of the test panels, and the effect varied with wood species. There was no significant effect of creep loading on residual bending properties of treated strandboard under the stress levels used. The four element spring-dashpot creep model fitted the creep data well. The predicted creep deflection for a 10-year loading duration under both 15% and 40% stress levels met the …

Low-Cost Container Yard For School-Based Restoration Nurseries, Edward W. Bush, Pamela B. Blanchard

Faculty Publications

A small inexpensive (less than $1000) container yard, measuring 10 × 10 ft square, with an automatic irrigation system was designed for schools participating in the Louisiana State University Coastal Roots Program: A School Seedling Nursery Program for Habitat Restoration. Students helped install the container yard on their school site and oversee native plant production through the course of the school year. Teachers and other school staff checked the nursery during summer months to ensure that the irrigation system was working properly and the plants were healthy. Students grew 1000 restoration seedlings per year in their container yard. Each year …

Shipbuilding And The English International Timber Trade, 1300-1700: A Framework For Study Using Niche Construction Theory, Jillian R. Smith

Nebraska Anthropologist

Much scholarship has been undertaken with regards to the evolution of the European shipbuilding traditions and their physical changes, but few explanations for the changes are given. This paper seeks to identify the correlations between the expansion of the English timber trade in the fourteenth to seventeenth centuries and the changes in shipbuilding at the time, thereby creating a framework for future study of this correlation and its possible relatedness using Niche Construction Theory as a framework. Directions the research can take and the data needed are the focus of this work.

Nanofiltration Membrane Pilot Studies For Disinfection By-Product Control, Eric J. Lynne Jan 2009

Nanofiltration Membrane Pilot Studies For Disinfection By-Product Control, Eric J. Lynne

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Watertown, South Dakota currently uses conventional softening to treat ground water to remove hardness, iron and manganese, and natural organic matter. The distribution system has experienced elevated concentrations of disinfection by-products, which will require additional treatment to comply with future limits set by the Stage 2 Disinfectant/Disinfection By-Products Rule. A nanofiltration membrane system has been proposed to remove additional natural organic matter from the softened water. Removing the natural organic material disinfection by-product precursors should reduce the concentration of disinfection by-products. The use of nanofiltration membranes has been previously documented to reject total organic carbon, while allowing desirable levels of …

User Interface Design, Moritz Stefaner, Sebastien Ferre, Saverio Perugini, Jonathan Koren, Yi Zhang

Computer Science Faculty Publications

As detailed in Chap. 1, system implementations for dynamic taxonomies and faceted search allow a wide range of query possibilities on the data. Only when these are made accessible by appropriate user interfaces, the resulting applications can support a variety of search, browsing and analysis tasks. User interface design in this area is confronted with specific challenges. This chapter presents an overview of both established and novel principles and solutions.

Hierarchies are ubiquitous on the web for structuring online catalogs and indexing multidimensional attributed data sets. They are a natural metaphor for information seeking if their levelwise structure mirrors the user's conception of the underlying domain. In other cases, they can be frustrating, especially if multiple drill‐downs are necessary to arrive at information of interest. To support a broad range of users, site designers often expose multiple faceted classifications or provide within‐page pruning mechanisms. We present a new technique, called out-of-turn interaction, that increases the richness of user interaction at hierarchical sites, without enumerating all possible completion paths in the …

A Secure Group Communication Architecture For Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, Adrian N. Phillips, Barry Mullins, Richard Raines, Rusty O. Baldwin Jan 2009

A Secure Group Communication Architecture For Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, Adrian N. Phillips, Barry Mullins, Richard Raines, Rusty O. Baldwin

Computer Science Faculty Publications

This paper investigates the application of a secure group communication architecture to a swarm of autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). A multicast secure group communication architecture for the low earth orbit (LEO) satellite environment is evaluated to determine if it can be effectively adapted to a swarm of UAVs and provide secure, scalable, and efficient communications. The performance of the proposed security architecture is evaluated with two other commonly used architectures using a discrete event computer simulation developed using MATLAB. Performance is evaluated in terms of the scalability and efficiency of the group key distribution and management scheme when the …
