If Mathematics Is A Language, How Do You Swear In It?, Dave Wagner
If Mathematics Is A Language, How Do You Swear In It?, Dave Wagner
The Mathematics Enthusiast
Swears are words that are considered rude or offensive. Like most other words, they are arbitrary symbols that index meaning: there is nothing inherently wrong with the letters that spell a swear word, but strung together they conjure strong meaning. This reminds us that language has power. This is true in mathematics classrooms too, where language practices structure the way participants understand mathematics and where teachers and students can use language powerfully to shape their own mathematical experience and the experiences of others.

Book Review: What's All The Commotion Over Commognition? A Review Of Anna Sfard's Thinking As Communicating, Bharath Sriraman
The Mathematics Enthusiast
If straight edge and compass constructions are the so-called “atoms” of Euclidean geometry, if sequences are the “atoms” of Analysis, then what are the “atoms” (if any) of mathematics education? Arguably mathematics education is a much wider field than Euclidean Geometry or Elementary Analysis, however there are several fundamental things that the field purports to study, chief among which is mathematical thinking or more generally “thinking”. The book under review, though it appears in a Cambridge University Press series entitled Learning in Doing: Social, Cognitive, and Computational Perspectives, is in my view situated at the intersection of Consciousness Studies, …

Communicative Patterns And Framing Of Worldviews Among Malaysian Chinese., Susan Tan Siew Choo
Student Works (2010-2019)
This study explores the world views of two groups of Malaysian Ethnic Chinese: Chinese language dominant subjects and English language dominant subjects using an analysis of four aspects of the Family Descriptor Scale which was adapted from Pyong Min Gap’s (1995) unity scale. It sets out to answer the following research questions: whether there are differences in the patterns of communication among Chinese language dominant Chinese Malaysians and English language dominant Chinese Malaysians; in what ways the cultural and/or psychological aspects of framing affect respondents’ discourse, and to what extent the frames reflect the world view of the respondents. The …

Intricacy Unveiled: Metaphor, Models, And (Mis)Understanding In The Behavioral Sciences, Scott L. Horton
Intricacy Unveiled: Metaphor, Models, And (Mis)Understanding In The Behavioral Sciences, Scott L. Horton
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
Metaphor use stands as a striking example of the creative drive of humans, with its ability to render understandable that which is highly convoluted, making it a natural partner and tool of the behavioral sciences. Touching briefly on the nature and efficiency of metaphor, I explore that tenacious and fertile connection vis a vis historic and current conceptualizations and contexts, and preparation for the counseling relationship.
The Unintended Consequence Of Tort Reform In Michigan: An Argument For Reinstating Retailer Product Liability, Ashley L. Thompson
The Unintended Consequence Of Tort Reform In Michigan: An Argument For Reinstating Retailer Product Liability, Ashley L. Thompson
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
Tort reform became an important issue during the 1994 Congressional Campaign as part of the Republican Party's "Contract with America. "Since then, many federal and state laws have attempted to reduce both liability and recovery in tort actions. In 1996, Michigan passed the Tort Reform Act, encompassing many drastic changes to state tort law. One provision of the Act, § 294 7, scaled back liability against non-manufacturing retailers in product liability actions. The Michigan Supreme Court interpreted the exceptions of the law narrowly and the prohibition broadly, essentially barring recovery from retailers. Since 1996, this provision has prevented victims injured …

Cloaked Websites: Propaganda, Cyber-Racism And Epistemology In The Digital Era, Jessie Daniels
Cloaked Websites: Propaganda, Cyber-Racism And Epistemology In The Digital Era, Jessie Daniels
Publications and Research
This article analyzes cloaked websites, which are sites published by individuals or groups who conceal authorship in order to disguise deliberately a hidden political agenda. Drawing on the insights of critical theory and the Frankfurt School, this article examines the way in which cloaked websites conceal a variety of political agendas from a range of perspectives. Of particular interest here are cloaked white supremacist sites that disguise cyber-racism. The use of cloaked websites to further political ends raises important questions about knowledge production and epistemology in the digital era. These cloaked sites emerge within a social and political context in …
Ink Blot Or Not: The Meaning Of Privileges And/Or Immunities, Richard Aynes
Ink Blot Or Not: The Meaning Of Privileges And/Or Immunities, Richard Aynes
Akron Law Faculty Publications
This article examines the meaning of the terms privileges and immunities as used in Article IV of the U.S. Constitution and the Fourteenth Amendment. It begins by tracing the American use of the terms to April 10, 1606 in the first Charter of Virginia. Building upon the work of other scholars and citing original documents, it concludes that these words has a well-established meaning as “rights” well before the Fourteenth Amendment was adopted. The article notes that in Justice Miller’s decision in the Slaughter-House Cases he refers to the privileges and immunities of Corfield v. Coryell as “those rights which …

Patience: A Project In Translation, Donna St. Louis
Patience: A Project In Translation, Donna St. Louis
Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts
Translation seems to be a simple process: a translator with a strong command of two languages renders a phrase from Language A into Language B for the purpose of wider communication. Given her intimacy with both languages, it should be a relatively easy task to transport meaning from one language to another. Yet a superficial transformation of language is not enough to create a successful translation; rather, a translator must seek to grasp and communicate the literary heart of a piece, as well as convert the complexities of its linguistic skeleton.
I explored translation’s double nature by translating a French …

Book Review: Designing Coherent Science Education: Implications For Curriculum, Instruction, And Policy By Yael Kali, Marcia Linn & Jo Roseman, Editors (Teachers College Press, 2008), Andreina Parisi-Amon
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Excerpt: The importance of science education is slowly gaining the support it deserves. President Obama stated that “science is more essential for our prosperity, our security, our health, our environment, and our quality of life than it has ever been” (Obama 2009). He recognized that “progress and prosperity of future generations will depend on what we do now to educate the next generation,” while announcing a renewed commitment to math and science education and challenging states to improve achievement in these areas. To create and sustain this improvement many areas need to be addressed. These include teaching science within …

An Inquiry Into Authorial Attribution, Sarah Potvin
An Inquiry Into Authorial Attribution, Sarah Potvin
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications
At attempt to establish the authorship of several unsigned pieces that appeared in the Pittsburgh magazine Home Monthly circa 1896-‐1897 using computational attribution techniques did not deliver robust results. The report that follows examines the computational methods advocated by professors David Hoover, Patrick Juola, and Matthew Jockers. It emphasizes the importance of contextualizing any statistical attribution results with traditional scholarship, as demonstrated by both Hoover and Jockers, and calls for collaboration between humanists and statisticians in interpreting and integrating statistical data.

Collection Assessment Of Monograph Purchases At The University Of Nevada, Las Vegas Libraries, J. Cory Tucker
Library Faculty Research
The purpose of this article is to describe an assessment project of the monograph collection at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Lied Library. The circulation statistics and in-house use of all monographs for the nine colleges at UNLV were assessed analyzing the last five years of data. The analysis included an assessment of the circulation statistics and in-house use of books purchased on an approval plan compared with books purchased by individual liaison librarians. The findings illustrated the fact that overall use of the monograph collection has declined over the past five years. The findings also showed that …

Muddy Waters: Congressional Consent And The Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Basin Resources Compact, Sonya Ziaja
All Faculty Scholarship
After nearly a century of negotiations among the Great Lakes states, tribes, and provinces, a promising new agreement was recently ratified by the parties and recognized by Congress, this is the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact ("GLC"). Interstate compacts, like the GLC, may serve as a particularly useful tool for solving regional environmental problems which the federal government lacks the interest to resolve. However, due to constitutional strictures, interstate compacts are not binding unless Congress grants consent to the compact. This Note will focus on the GLC as a means to examine the current state of the …
The Dna Of An Argument: A Case Study In Legal Logos, Colin Starger
The Dna Of An Argument: A Case Study In Legal Logos, Colin Starger
All Faculty Scholarship
This Article develops a framework for analyzing legal argument through an in-depth case study of the debate over federal actions for post-conviction DNA access. Building on the Aristotelian concept of logos, this Article maintains that the persuasive power of legal logic depends in part on the rhetorical characteristics of premises, inferences, and conclusions in legal proofs. After sketching a taxonomy that distinguishes between prototypical argument logo (formal, empirical, narrative, and categorical), the Article applies its framework to parse the rhetorical dynamics at play in litigation over post-conviction access to DNA evidence under 42 U.S.C. § 1983, focusing in particular on …
Justice And Fairness In The Dictator Game, Karl Schurter, Bart J. Wilson
Justice And Fairness In The Dictator Game, Karl Schurter, Bart J. Wilson
Economics Faculty Articles and Research
This article uses a laboratory experiment to examine the question of whether justice and fairness are different motivational forces in the dictator game. "Justice" and "fairness" are often used interchangeably because their meanings and usages are so closely linked, despite their distinct connotations. Using four different treatments, our experimental design investigates the subtle differences between the two social concepts to explicate generosity in the dictator game. The results indicate that justice, not fairness, legitimizes property rights in the dictator game.

The London bombings on 7 July 2005 highlighted the prevailing terrorist threat to the UK. The present study addressed the psychological response of community (n=294) indirectly exposed to the attacks to discern he broader impact and effects of terrorism. Qualitative content analysis was used to develop a profile of emotions and responses to the attacks. This was supplemented by the use of linguistic analysis demonstrating the enormous heterogeneity and complexity of responses to terrorism. In light of previous work on the wider impact of terrorism, the present study highlighted a relatively restrained impact of terrorism. Notwithstanding this observation, responses were …

Transformative Education In The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning: An Analysis Of Sotl Literature, Lorraine S. Gilpin, Delores Liston
Transformative Education In The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning: An Analysis Of Sotl Literature, Lorraine S. Gilpin, Delores Liston
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) though in its youth, is perceived by many as transforming the academy. Will the transformation of the academy promised by SoTL be a mere shifting of priorities from research in the disciplines to research in pedagogy? Or will SoTL pursue transformation of the conception of teaching and learning whereby the commons influence our identities as knowers and actors engaged in scholarship for the purposes of transformation and growth on local and global scales? Our purpose is to explore whether the scholarship of teaching and learning, as represented in literature associated with SoTL, is …

What Drives Research-Focused University Academics To Want To Teach Effectively?: Examining Achievement, Self-Efficacy And Self-Esteem, Linda Evans, Maria Bertani Tress
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
What motivates research-focused academics, employed at a leading research university, to want to teach well – particularly considering that many of them admit to prioritising research above teaching? Why do they not simply settle for expending as little time as possible on their teaching planning and preparation, delivering run-of- the-mill, lack-lustre seminars and lectures that fail to inspire their students? These are the central questions addressed in this article, which revisits and re-analyses data from a 1993-4 case study of teaching and learning in a UK research-intensive university. Selected qualitative data from the original study are used to present an …
A Pedagogy Of Process: Using Arts Based Research With Community Development Co-Researchers To Explore Campus Community Dialogue, Brian Hand
Theses
This thesis will outline how I employed an arts informed participatory research process with four women members of the Southend family resource centre in Wexford town. The primary context for this research was the introduction of a module in community based learning on the BA (hons) in Art at the Wexford Campus of I.T. Carlow combined with a desire to participate more actively in the community sector outside the campus. The choice of an arts based methodology was to capture knowledge in a multifaceted way, to give depth to the many meanings of individual experiences and finally to suggest a …
