What Is Glamour? The Production & Consumption Of A Working Aesthetic, Gordon Douglas Aug 2009

What Is Glamour? The Production & Consumption Of A Working Aesthetic, Gordon Douglas

Faculty Publications, Urban and Regional Planning

I examine here how glamour is manifested in different places and among different peoples across Los Angeles, each with different histories, cultures and aesthetics. After initially defining the concept with reference to traditional understandings using the social and spatial history of Hollywood, I develop three ideal-typical categories of glamour (glitz as glamour, status as glamour, and grit as glamour) as heuristics for looking at the many diverse ‘glamours’ to be found in Los Angeles today: from the film industry to finance, the allure of haute cuisine to the chrome of Latino car culture, the manufactured spectacle of absurdist architecture to …

Do you drink red wine?

A new wine-aerator has come along that is astounding in its effect. If I were still writing the Games column in OMNI I would do one about this. The inventor is one Rio Sabadicci who lives 20 miles away and I have interviewed him.

A Proposed Syntax For Minimotif Semantics, Version 1., Jay Vyas, Ronald J. Nowling, Mark W. Maciejewski, Sanguthevar Rajasekaran, Michael R. Gryk, Martin R. Schiller

Life Sciences Faculty Research

BACKGROUND:

One of the most important developments in bioinformatics over the past few decades has been the observation that short linear peptide sequences (minimotifs) mediate many classes of cellular functions such as protein-protein interactions, molecular trafficking and post-translational modifications. As both the creators and curators of a database which catalogues minimotifs, Minimotif Miner, the authors have a unique perspective on the commonalities of the many functional roles of minimotifs. There is an obvious usefulness in standardizing functional annotations both in allowing for the facile exchange of data between various bioinformatics resources, as well as the internal clustering of sets of …

Concurrent Validity Of The Transdisciplinary Play Based Assessment-2, Keri E. Linas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Standardized assessment tools have been criticized for use with young children; however, there is limited empirical research supporting developmentally appropriate, play-based assessments. Forty children, with and without developmental disabilities, ages 10-73 months referred from the community of a large city received a transdisciplinary play based assessment (TPBA-2) and standardized assessment. Caretakers also completed the Vineland Scales of Adaptive Behavior. Concurrent validity between the TPBA-2 and standardized assessment tools (Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development-III and the Mullen Scales of Early Learning) was demonstrated (p

Daoist Harmony As A Chinese Philosophy And Psychology, Yueh-Ting Lee, Honggang Yang, Min Wang

Peace and Conflict Studies

Based on Lee’s prior research on Daoism (Lee, 2003; Lee, 2004; Lee, Han, Byron and Fan, 2008; Lee and Hu, 1993; Lee, Norasakkunkit, Liu, Zhang and Zhou, 2008), this article first introduces Laozi, Dao, De and Daoism in relation to harmony. Then, Daoist harmony is elaborated in the following areas: (1) the yin-yang oneness, (2) the way it is (natural), (3) wei-wu-wei (or nonintervention), (4) water-like characteristics, (5) love for peace, and (6) tolerance and appreciation of differences. The article concludes with a suggestion for harmony with the external world as well as with fellow human beings.

There are a variety of bilingual education, Spanish and English, programs currently used throughout the United States. The effectiveness of student's academic success is based on the bilingual education program they participate in, which has been a long-standing debated topic. Recently new and innovative bilingual education programs such as dual-language models have been introduced and implemented into many classrooms. There is significant scholarly debate regarding the efficacy of dual language education programs. It is possible that the debate is centered on …

Adult Learning And School Leadership: Application And Learning From A Group Relations Conference, Heather Dierolf Edd

Dissertations

The role of the principal as a change agent is at the forefront of the conversation regarding the state of schools in public education, yet little is known about how group relations work can enhance a principal's ability to engage in this work. Using a qualitative grounded theory approach, this study examined the change in attitudes and behaviors of K-8 principals who participated in a Group Relations Conference. A grounded theory approach was employed to address the following research questions: How do principals understand and describe their learning after participating in a Group Relations Conference? How do they apply their …

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The representation of literary characters in a novel often addresses socio‐ cultural issues. The authors give depth to their literary characters by closely illuminating details of the novel’s setting, of the flora and the fauna, the social structure, the economic organization, aspects of the traditional culture, history and language. This study reviews several novels written by Francophone authors and examines the ways these novels treat socio‐cultural themes. The focus of this work is on exoticism , which can be defined as all “which is foreign to the climate, to the habits and to the culture of the world region in …

A specific assessment for testing readiness skills is lacking for children entering kindergarten. This study investigates the influence of early education programs on school readiness and differences between male and female school readiness screening scores upon students‘ entrance into kindergarten. The study uses 321 school readiness screening scores of students in grades kindergarten through 12th grade from a rural school district with the population of approximately 540 students located in Southwest Missouri. A causal-comparative study was performed on the data compiled from student records. An unpaired t-test using a two-tailed P-value hypothesis test revealed there is a significant difference between …

Ultrakinetic Features Of Anime Texts: Revisioning Composition Theory And Exploring Visual Rhetoric Pedagogy., Karen Ware 1973- Aug 2009

Ultrakinetic Features Of Anime Texts: Revisioning Composition Theory And Exploring Visual Rhetoric Pedagogy., Karen Ware 1973-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Our contemporary culture is laden with a glut of visual stimuli: advertising, packaging, television, film, the internet, digital-camera-wireless-web-access-mobile-phones. In a world filled with visually rhetorical media, it is imperative that the field of Composition continue to embrace the theorizing and use of visual rhetoric an apt (if not vital) pursuit. It seems a responsible choice to select visual texts and/or visually rich writing assignments in order to address the current fabric of public/private communication. Furthermore, such texts can potentially set the student reader (viewer/writer/designer/composer) at ease in the sometimes daunting task of becoming a "college writer" and subsequently a professional …

"Metaphors We Teach By": Representations Of Disciplinary And Teacherly Identity., Stephen Edwin Neaderhiser 1978-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is a theoretical examination and textual analysis of the metaphors used to describe the act of writing and the teaching of writing. Within Rhetoric and Composition, there are specific conceptual metaphors that are instrumental to how teachers and compositionists describe the how writing development occurs, and what role teachers have in encouraging that development. This dissertation excavates the metaphoric interaction that has helped to shape the discipline of Rhetoric and Composition. I argue that the metaphors of writing run the risk of becoming "black-boxed," uncritically accepted (or resisted), which can lead to an unbalanced interactive relationship between members …

Realism And The Irish Victorian Novel, Lorcan Sirr Aug 2009

Realism And The Irish Victorian Novel, Lorcan Sirr

Other Resources

Second Language Teaching Strategies For Teaching The Human Body To Fourth Graders, Maria L. Vela Aug 2009

Second Language Teaching Strategies For Teaching The Human Body To Fourth Graders, Maria L. Vela

All Graduate Projects

In a country filled with pressure for high academic achievement at the state and federal levels, it is necessary to implement "best practice" teaching strategies for student success. "Best practice" teaching strategies are strategies that are research based and have proven to be essential in increasing academic achievement. Among using "best practices," there are a variety of programs that focus on teaching second language learners English, one of them being dual language. Dual language is an additive bilingual program in which the second language is taught through the content areas as the native language continues to be developed. However, the …

The Culture Of Poverty: How It Affects Middle School Students, Kaycie Anne Tuttle Aug 2009

The Culture Of Poverty: How It Affects Middle School Students, Kaycie Anne Tuttle

All Graduate Projects

In education, teachers are seeing more impoverished students than ever before. With that understanding, teachers need to know how to identify and assist these students so that they are successful in school. The War on Poverty has been going on for years, and with a failing economy, teachers are seeing more impoverished students in their classrooms. To counteract this situation, teachers will be shown a pamphlet, power point presentation, and a workshop on poverty which will help show teachers what their students may be experiencing when away from school. In addition, the pamphlet will provide information of what to look …

Kindergarten Connection: An Early Literacy Intervention Through Home/School/Community Connections, Laurie Card-Roley Aug 2009

Kindergarten Connection: An Early Literacy Intervention Through Home/School/Community Connections, Laurie Card-Roley

All Graduate Projects

Students most at-risk for academic failure are the populations of students classified as English Language Learners; migrant students; special education students; children of poverty; homeless students; students in foster care; children of abuse or neglect; and children with social, emotional, or behavioral concerns. The number of students falling within the at-risk population of students has continued to increase over the years. A program and curriculum called Kindergarten Connection attempts to address these barriers to learning by identifying family, societal and academic concerns prior to kindergarten and connecting families to the school and community resources that will provide the needed support. …
