The Search For Wholeness In J.M. Coetzee's In The Heart Of The Country, Waiting For The Barbarians, And Disgrace, Joanna Buboltz Jan 2009

The Search For Wholeness In J.M. Coetzee's In The Heart Of The Country, Waiting For The Barbarians, And Disgrace, Joanna Buboltz

Masters Theses

Literary critics of South African writer J.M. Coetzee’s novels have examined multiple aspects of the writer’s works, including his linguistic strategies, allegorical features, and depictions of native characters. This thesis attempts to fill a hole in the literary discussion by examining the identities of the main white characters of three of Coetzee’s novels: In the Heart of the Country, Waiting for the Barbarians, and Disgrace. In these novels, all three protagonists are inherently incomplete because of their status as members of the hegemony, and all three struggle to redefine themselves through relationships with those their power group has …

The Effect Of Markedness On Korean L2 Learners’ Pronunciation Of The English /L/ And /R/, Johannah Lovett Jan 2009

The Effect Of Markedness On Korean L2 Learners’ Pronunciation Of The English /L/ And /R/, Johannah Lovett

Senior Honors Theses

The complex process of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) is a challenge for linguists to explain. One perspective, the Markedness Principle, states that certain language characteristics are not as common cross-linguistically. For example, the coda position in syllables occurs less universally in languages. Linking this with the well-known difficulty that native Korean speakers typically face with the English phonemes /l/ and /r/, the hypothesis states that pronouncing these sounds is most challenging in the coda. An experiment is designed to embed nonsense words containing /l/ and /r/ in a story, which is recorded as the subjects read aloud. The hypothesis is …

"Welcoming The Stranger": A Dialogue Between Scriptural Understandings Of And Catholic Church Policies Towards Migrants And Refugees And Pastoral Praxis In The Migrant And Refugee Pastoral Care Bodies Within The Archdiocese Of Perth, Judith M. Woodward

Theses

Growth in human movement around the world has been one of the phenomenal aspects of globalization since the Second World War. Among these ‘people on the move’ those whom the United Nations Humanitarian Commission for Refugees has described as ‘persons of concern’ – refugees, displaced persons etc. – have increased at an alarming rate. They are now well in excess of the global population growth rate over the same period Many of these have moved into adjacent poorer developing countries but increasingly many are seeking asylum, either through official United Nations’ channels or through on-shore arrivals, in developing nations. This …

Root Infinitives In Child L2 Spanish, Sandra Patricia Cano Garcia Jan 2009

Root Infinitives In Child L2 Spanish, Sandra Patricia Cano Garcia

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This thesis aims to develop an understanding of the Root Infinitive (RI) phenomenon in child L2 Spanish. Previous research has investigated this phenomenon in Spanish first language acquisition and in adult L2 Spanish, but much less attention has been given to this phenomenon in children learning Spanish as a second language. This thesis focuses on whether children learning Spanish as a second language go through a RI stage. It also examines which morphological forms and types of predicates appear in the RI stage of these children. The data for this study were collected via natural production in oral and written …

Hierarchical Modeling: Biogeochemical Processes And Mechanisms That Drive Clay Nano-And Microfabric Development, Kenneth J. Curry, Richard H. Bennett, Paula J. Smithka, Matthew H. Hulbert

Faculty Publications

Conceptual scientific models of clay and clay fabric development can be constructed profitably by considering chemical and physical systems in terms of an ordered hierarchy. We develop here a hierarchical model of early stages of marine sediment development identifying processes and focusing on mechanisms. While the focus of our model is on mechanisms, the physical aspects of the hierarchy are cast in terms of the nanometer (nanofabric) level of organization of sediment fabric. This level is nested below the micrometer (microfabric) level that includes aggregates of clay signatures and is nested above the molecular level that includes edges and faces …

We Don't Talk Like Dat! Perceptions Of Preparedness To Teach Language Diverse Students, Aubretta P. Curry Jan 2009

We Don't Talk Like Dat! Perceptions Of Preparedness To Teach Language Diverse Students, Aubretta P. Curry

All ETDs from UAB

A language barrier exists in schools across the United States, and it's not just with students from other countries. It is estimated that over 8 million African American students speak a language which is foreign to many classroom teachers. The dissonance between home and school language has had devastating effects of African American achievement, with regard to literacy and language arts instruction. With a focus on how teacher education programs in post secondary institutions in Alabama are preparing teachers to teach students with diverse dialects, this qualitative research inquiry provides a critical case study of the perceptions of eight early …

PERCEPTIONS OF FOUR PRINCIPALS OF SOUTHEASTERN AWARD-WINNING URBAN SCHOOLS ON SCHOOL, FAMILY, AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT ELEANOR V. STOKES EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP ABSTRACT The purpose of this qualitative case study was to gain insight through examining the experiences of four urban award-winning schools' principals with regard to school, family, and community involvement, and the perceived effects of such participation on student achievement as reflected in the schools' Adequate Yearly Progress Report. This qualitative study examined the ways in which four elementary and middle school principals perceived family and community involvement in their school. Major themes that emerged from the study were relationships, …

Mind The Gap: English L2 Learners Of Russian And The Null Possessive Pronoun, William Comer Jan 2009

Mind The Gap: English L2 Learners Of Russian And The Null Possessive Pronoun, William Comer

Russian Language Journal

The personal possessive pronouns in Russian (мой, твой, наш, ваш, его, её, их) are taught very early in virtually all elementary textbooks of the language. At the point of their introduction, the problems that they most often pose for English‐speaking L2 learners are their morphology and the rules for agreement with the nouns they modify. For L2 learners, the usage and frequency of these pronouns at this stage in language study seem virtually to mirror English patterns. When introduced to simple sentences with finite verbs and complements as well as the “у кого есть что” construction, learners may (or may …

The Actr Nationwide Survey Of Russian Language Instruction In U.S. High Schools In 2009, Dan E. Davidson, Nadra Garas

Russian Language Journal

Adequate access to extended sequences of instruction across a range of world languages in the U.S. K‐12 system can provide the “early start” in language learning, which is essential for a new generation of Americans who will compete in the highly globalized economy of the 21st century.2 The study of Arabic, Chinese Japanese, Persian, and Russian have attracted particular attention among U.S. policymakers, given the importance of these and other major world languages for long‐term U.S. national security interests, scientific and cultural exchange, mutual understanding, and the preservation of U.S. economic competitiveness around the world.

Form And Function Of Expressive Morphology: A Case Study Of Russian, Olga Steriopolo Jan 2009

Form And Function Of Expressive Morphology: A Case Study Of Russian, Olga Steriopolo

Russian Language Journal

In this paper, I conduct a detailed case study of expressive suffixes in Russian. Although the suffixes under investigation have the same function (expressive), they differ significantly in their formal properties. I identify two major semantic types of expressive suffixes: attitude suffixes, which convey the speaker’s attitude toward the referent, and size suffixes, which both convey the speaker’s attitude and refer to the size of the referent. I argue that the two different semantic types map onto different syntactic types. Attitude suffixes are syntactic heads, while size suffixes are syntactic modifiers. As heads, attitude suffixes determine the formal properties (syntactic …

The Online Proficiency‐Based Reading, Listening, And Integrated Writing External Assessment Program For Russian: A Report To The Field, Saodat I. Bazarova, Maria D. Lekic, Camelot Marshall

Russian Language Journal

Rising interest in the U.S. in the study and teaching of Russian language and culture, reported elsewhere in the present volume (Davidson & Garas, 2009), has coincided with the reaffirmation of the status of Russian by U. S. government agencies as a critical language. Russian is identified, for example, in the 2006 National Security Language Initiative (NSLI) as a “critical need language,” for which the production of greater numbers of advanced‐level speakers is deemed essential (U.S. Department of Education, 2008, p. 1). According to the most recent ADFL/MLA report on language enrollments in two‐ and four‐year U.S. institutions of higher …

О Месте Творческого Или «Креативного» Потенциала Русского Языка В Практике Преподавания Русского Языка Как Иностранного, Екатерина Москвер

Russian Language Journal

(Widdowson 1992, Bauman and Briggs …

Birth Language Attrition And Reacquisition In Russian Adoptees, Avram J. Lyon Jan 2009

Birth Language Attrition And Reacquisition In Russian Adoptees, Avram J. Lyon

Russian Language Journal

The wave of adoption from Russia and other countries of the former Soviet Union has brought a large number of incomplete Russian speakers into the United States; over 71,000 orphans from Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Belarus have been issued United States entry visas since 1992 (U.S. Department of State 2007 and 2009; Ruggiero 2007). This is part of a larger trend toward international adoption, amounting to several hundred thousand children in the past decades. Children adopted by American families experience a radical reduction in birth language exposure and must quickly acclimate to and become proficient in the language of the …

"The Lower Class Of Traitors Have Also Their Architects Of Plots": The London Irish, The United Irish, And The Creation Of Irish Identities, 1780-1800, Erin K. Crawley Jan 2009

"The Lower Class Of Traitors Have Also Their Architects Of Plots": The London Irish, The United Irish, And The Creation Of Irish Identities, 1780-1800, Erin K. Crawley

Masters Theses

This thesis explores the concepts of prejudice and contrasting identities in 1790s London, examining the interplay between English authorities, the United Irish, and the working Irish in London. The thesis examines the agency of the London Irish and the limits to their actions caused by the United Irish presence in London and the English response. First, it analyzes court cases, sessions papers, pamphlets, and trial publications to show where prosecutors, defendants, and witnesses make linguistic ascriptions of Irish, English, and metropolitan identity. This analysis shows that the working-class London Irish were primarily unskilled laborers, beggars, and disembarked soldiers living in …

Perspective-Taking In Adolescents With Asperger Syndrome And Nonverbal Learning Disorder, Caitlin Scaliatine Jan 2009

Perspective-Taking In Adolescents With Asperger Syndrome And Nonverbal Learning Disorder, Caitlin Scaliatine

Masters Theses

Theory of mind is the ability to attribute mental states to oneself and other individuals, allowing us to predict the thoughts and feelings of others based on their behaviors. Research has established that individuals with Asperger syndrome (AS) experience difficulty with advanced theory of mind tasks; however, theory of mind abilities have not been evaluated for individuals with nonverbal learning disability (NVLD). The following test battery was administered to four adolescents with AS, five adolescents with NVLD, and five adolescents with neurotypical development to examine their theory of mind abilities: the Pragmatic Judgment and lriferences subtests from the Comprehensive Assessment …

Who's Afraid Of Polygamy? Exploring The Boundaries Of Family, Equality And Custom In South Africa, Penelope Andrews Jan 2009

Who's Afraid Of Polygamy? Exploring The Boundaries Of Family, Equality And Custom In South Africa, Penelope Andrews

Articles & Chapters

South Africa's post-apartheid constitution has been widely admired and constantly referenced by international scholars, and especially international human rights scholars, for its comprehensive embrace of gender equality. But the commitment to gender equality has been tested by other liberatory discourses, including African nationalism and cultural and religious autonomy. This Article examines the evolution of South African legislation and constitutional jurisprudence in the face of competing imperatives, for example, between equality, legal pluralism, customary law/religious law, and the recognition of polygamy. In particular, it focuses on the Recognition of Customary Marriages Act, a statute that purports to regulate customary marriages, including …

Taking Out The Trash: Critiquing The Equipment For Living Of White Trash Films, Tasha Rose Dunn Jan 2009

Taking Out The Trash: Critiquing The Equipment For Living Of White Trash Films, Tasha Rose Dunn

Masters Theses

Over the past decade, class has become a lightning rod issue in the United States as the gap between the rich and the poor continues to widen. One of the main reasons for growing class segregation is the mere fact that U.S. culture carries enormous social anxieties about poverty and, in turn, blame the poor for being poor. As a result of hegemonic beliefs about class, crude discourses are formed and fostered through the mainstream media creating both inaccurate and damaging portrayals. Such damaging portrayals are immediately evident in a variety of mainstream Hollywood films produced in the past decade …

Relationship Between Theory Of Mind Performance In A Nonverbal Task And Functioning Level Of Children With Autism, Michael J. Grenda Jan 2009

Relationship Between Theory Of Mind Performance In A Nonverbal Task And Functioning Level Of Children With Autism, Michael J. Grenda

Masters Theses

Individuals with autism often show deficits in Theory of Mind (ToM), their ability to understand the perceptions of others. The relationship between functioning level and ToM abilities in children with autism has not been adequately explored. This study utilized a nonverbal task of ToM adapted from previous research (Colle, Baron-Cohen, & Hill, 2007) which allowed examination of lower functioning or nonverbal individuals. Participants included nine individuals with autism spectrum disorders and nine normally developing individuals. Functioning level was estimated using a brief autism rating scale. When controlling for nonverbal abilities and age, no significant differences in ToM abilities were found …

A Qualitative Analysis Of Client Expressions Of Meaning In Psychotherapy, Alexander Michael Bacher Jan 2009

A Qualitative Analysis Of Client Expressions Of Meaning In Psychotherapy, Alexander Michael Bacher

Theses and Dissertations

Finding meaning has long been considered a critical component in human development and flourishing (Carlsen, 1991; Erikson, 1968; Frankl, 1959), but there has been relatively little qualitative research on how the meaning-making process occurs within psychotherapy. The purpose of this study was to explore therapy clients' processes of making-meaning as well as the factors which hinder its resolution. Archival videotapes of 5 adult clients of diverse age, gender, ethnicity, religious/spiritual orientation and presenting issues were observed during their 3rd or 5th psychotherapy session at a university's community counseling clinic. Employing a content analytic approach, the researchers used a modified version …

Parental Involvement And The Developmental Stages Of Writing: Knowledge And Skills To Assist Children And Parent Perceptions On Their Experience, Elena Fernandez-Kaltenbach

Theses and Dissertations

A kindergarten parent workshop series on the developmental stages of writing was created and assessed. The intended outcome was to empower parents with writing knowledge and writing skills so that they could apply this knowledge and skills at home with their child. The researcher developed the workshops from parent involvement research, developmental stages for writing, and the knowledge of adult learning. To assess the outcomes, the researcher utilized a mixed-methods qualitative approach analyzing responses from a pre and post assessment, oral discussions from videotaped sessions, researcher field notes, and parent responses to focused questions in a journal. Thirty-five Spanish-speaking parents …

Ramanuja And Schleiermacher On Language: Comparative Theology For Constructive Theology, Jon Paul Sydnor

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The truth of the Veda is affirmed in the aphorism, 'The relation of words to facts is natural [autpattika: inherent, original, primordial] (Mimamsa Sutras I.I.7)'. Just as fire and water do naturally possess their properties like heat, just as the senses like sight and hearing are naturally productive of particular kinds of cognition, words also have a natural power of imparting knowledge.
