The Effects Of A Peer-Mediated Intervention On Language And Reciprocity In Young Children With Social Communication Disorders, Sharon Bissonnette Jan 2009

The Effects Of A Peer-Mediated Intervention On Language And Reciprocity In Young Children With Social Communication Disorders, Sharon Bissonnette

Open Access Dissertations

Children with social communication disorders educated in inclusive settings often remain socially isolated from typically-developing peers. This study used a single subject ABC design to determine if a peer-buddy social skills intervention based on buddy skills would increase the frequency and quality of interaction between three preschool-aged children with social communication disorders and three typically-developing peers, in a public school setting. Children were placed in rotating pairs during three play activities. Generalization to a different classroom activity was also probed. Videotaped observations were analyzed for frequency of communicative acts, modes of communication, diversity of vocabulary, structural complexity of sentences, initiation, …

A Study Of Selected Errors In Arab Students' English Compositions And An Investigation Of Arabic Rhetoric, Samaa Gamie

Open Access Dissertations

The first half of this dissertation study proposes a revision and rethinking of the traditional methodology used in error studies in composition and presents a new approach to the research on error. The dissertation presents an analysis of the frequency of errors in a sample of 756 Arab student essays of Egyptian, Kuwaiti, Lebanese, and Syrian nationalities. The error study of Arab student writing also analyzes the ways in which these Arab students use the English language to present and affirm their individual, national, cultural, and religious discourses and the manifestations of cultural and ideological resistance in these students' written …

The Relative Importance Of Lexical Frequency In Syllable- And Word-Final /S/ Reduction In Cali, Colombia, Earl K. Brown Jan 2009

The Relative Importance Of Lexical Frequency In Syllable- And Word-Final /S/ Reduction In Cali, Colombia, Earl K. Brown

Faculty Publications

The literature on phonological variation and change abounds with studies about syllable- and word-final /s/ reduction in Spanish. In fact, “the aspiration and deletion of /s/ in dialects of Spanish may be the most extensively treated of all sound changes being investigated from an empirical, variationist perspective” (Ferguson, 1990, p. 64). Many factors have been shown to significantly affect this linguistic phenomenon. Terrell (1979) finds word length to be a significant factor in his Cuban data, with more deletion in polysyllabic words than in monosyllabic ones. Additionally, Terrell shows that redundant plural markers in noun phrases (that is, all but …

The Effects Of Depth And Eccentricity On Visual Search In A Depth Display, George Angelo Reis Jan 2009

The Effects Of Depth And Eccentricity On Visual Search In A Depth Display, George Angelo Reis

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The attribute of depth has been shown to provide saliency or conspicuity for items in a visual search task. Novel displays that present information in real physical depth offer potential benefits. Previous research has studied depth in visual search but depth was mostly realized without real physical separation of display elements. This study aimed to better understand the effects of real physical depth and eccentricity on visual search in a depth display. Through this understanding, we can appropriately utilize this new technology. An experiment was conducted to test four hypotheses regarding how depth, eccentricity, target feature, and screen location would …

Trademarks As A Media For False Advertising, J. Shahar Dillbary Jan 2009

Trademarks As A Media For False Advertising, J. Shahar Dillbary

Articles

This Article explores an unnoticed aspect of trademark law which in some instances may constitute a license to cheat. It shows that under certain circumstances a seller can use its own trademark to mislead its customers, free from legal sanction, in contexts where the same behavior would be sanctioned if the seller used other advertising media. The Article then explores how an alternate conception of the economic function of trademarks can be used to understand the informational value of trademarks and their advertising function. After identifying circumstances appropriate for legal intervention, the Article concludes with a proposal for a new …

An Examination Of The Association Between Middle School Students' Perceptions Of Teacher Interactions, Home-School Dissonance, And School Attachment, Ruby Jewel Stevens

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether middle school students’ perceptions of teacher interactions and home-school dissonance are predictors of school attachment. The study sought to determine if there were differences in students’ perceptions of teacher interactions and home-school dissonance based on ethnicity, gender and/or grade level. This investigation is one of the first to explore the association between these variables.

Data for this investigation was obtained from a larger study where surveys were administered to over 800 racially diverse students in grades 6 through 8 in Language Arts classrooms in two public middle schools with diverse student …

The Arctic In World Environmental History, Jonathan D. Greenberg Jan 2009

The Arctic In World Environmental History, Jonathan D. Greenberg

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

For millions of years, the Arctic has been the world's most important "barometer of global change and amplifier of global warming." For twenty thousand years, the Arctic has been the homeland of modern human settlement, and it has played a central role in the interplay between global climate change and human migration throughout Eurasia and the Americas. Since the late fifteenth century, Arctic aboriginal peoples, lands, and seas have been thoroughly integrated into the international history of European trade, capitalism, and colonization; the territorial expansion of modern nation states; and the transnational strategic history since the outset of the Cold …

Cross-Linguistic Universals In Reading Acquisition With Applications To English-Language Learners With Reading Disabilities, Brenda K. Gorman Jan 2009

Cross-Linguistic Universals In Reading Acquisition With Applications To English-Language Learners With Reading Disabilities, Brenda K. Gorman

Speech Pathology and Audiology Faculty Research and Publications

There is a considerable gap in English reading achievement between English-language learners and native speakers in the United States. Differentiation of whether English language learners’ struggles are symptomatic of reading disability or related to second language acquisition is often challenging. These issues highlight the need for increased insight into reading development and disability in this population. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of cross-linguistic universals in reading acquisition, how reading disabilities manifest in various languages, and whether diagnostic and instructional approaches that are effective for native English speakers are also appropriate for English-language learners. Recommendations for …

An Adaptive Steganography Scheme For Voice Over Ip, Hui Tian, Ke Zhou, Hong Jiang, Yongfeng Huang, Jin Liu, Dan Feng Jan 2009

An Adaptive Steganography Scheme For Voice Over Ip, Hui Tian, Ke Zhou, Hong Jiang, Yongfeng Huang, Jin Liu, Dan Feng

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

This paper presents an adaptive steganography scheme for Voice over IP (VoIP). Differing from existing steganography techniques for VoIP, this scheme enhances the embedding transparency by taking into account the similarity between Least Significant Bits (LSBs) and embedded messages. Moreover, we introduce the notion of Partial Similarity Value (PSV). By properly setting the threshold PSV, we can adaptively balance the embedding transparency and capacity. We evaluate the effectiveness of this scheme with G.729a as the codec of the cover speech in StegTalk, a covert communication system based on VoIP. The experimental results demonstrate that our technique provides better performance than …

Xenophobia: Understanding The Roots And Consequences Of Negative Attitudes Toward Immigrants, Oksana Yakushko Jan 2009

Xenophobia: Understanding The Roots And Consequences Of Negative Attitudes Toward Immigrants, Oksana Yakushko

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

The current xenophobic cultural environment in the United States makes it imperative that psychologists understand the nature of xenophobia and recognize its consequences. This article explores sociological, social psychological, and multicultural research to examine the causes of negative attitudes toward immigrants. Xenophobia is presented as a concept descriptive of a socially observable phenomenon. Historical and contemporary expressions of xenophobia in the United States are examined and compared with cross-cultural scholarship on negative attitudes toward immigrants. Last, suggestions are provided for how counseling psychologists can integrate an understanding of xenophobia into their clinical practice, training, research, and public policy advocacy.

"Israel": An Abstract Concept Or Concrete Reality In Recent Judeo-Argentinean Narrative?, Amalia Ran Jan 2009

"Israel": An Abstract Concept Or Concrete Reality In Recent Judeo-Argentinean Narrative?, Amalia Ran

Spanish Language and Literature Papers

The re-democratization process in Argentina, beginning at the end of 1983, emphasized a tendency that had emerged within the Judeo-Argentinean fiction (and Argentinean narrative in general) to contemplate on the collective and personal memory, while creating a type of dialogue with the general historic context of the twentieth century. This process was un-masqueraded as a political and literary strategy in order to re-create an "archive" and re-construct it in a way that would correspond to the new material circumstances of the Argentinean nation and its society at that specific moment. The dilemma of how to define the essence of Jewish …

"Mi Condición De Sirena": The Diasporas Of Gabriela Avigur-Rotem And Alicia Dujovne Ortiz, Amalia Ran

Spanish Language and Literature Papers

The experience of arrIving from the "other" shore is inherited in the Jewish condition, and is often related to the absence of an authentic origin, thus impeding the univocal determination of the" private" and the "collective" while narrating the personal history and evoking the past. The impossibility to belong to one place and the individual dilemma facing the surrounding society require considering the ethnic, racial, and cultural elements, as well as those factors concerning class and gender, and their inter-textual and intra-textual significances when analyzing the ambivalence of the Jewish newcomers.

In the case of Gabriela Avigur-Rotem (1945, Israeli resident …

Living In The Space Between Participant And Researcher As A Narrative Inquirer: Examining Ethnic Identity Of Chinese Canadian Students As Conflicting Stories To Live By, Elaine Chan Jan 2009

Living In The Space Between Participant And Researcher As A Narrative Inquirer: Examining Ethnic Identity Of Chinese Canadian Students As Conflicting Stories To Live By, Elaine Chan

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Schooling experiences of 1st-generation Canadians interact with cultural experiences in their immigrant households to shape a sense of ethnic identity both as Canadians and as members of an ethnic community. This long-term, school-based narrative inquiry is an examination of ways in which expectations for academic performance and behavior by teachers and peers at school and immigrant parents at home contributed to shaping the ethnic identity of an immigrant Chinese student as conflicting stories to live by. A narrative approach revealed challenges of supporting immigrant students in North American schools and contributed to understanding of the nuances of multicultural education.

Service-Learning Is… How Faculty Explain Their Practice, Kerryann O’Meara, Elizabeth K. Niehaus Jan 2009

Service-Learning Is… How Faculty Explain Their Practice, Kerryann O’Meara, Elizabeth K. Niehaus

Department of Educational Administration: Faculty Publications

Many researchers have explored faculty engagement in service-learning. However, scholarship rarely considers ways in which the discourses used by faculty to describe service-learning—the stories they tell about what it is they are doing and why—construct images of subject positions, problems, and solutions that inform our beliefs about service-learning and our practice. The purpose of this study was to understand the dominant discourses used by faculty to explain service-learning. The nomination files of 109 exemplary faculty nominated for the Thomas Ehrlich Award were analyzed. Findings indicate that faculty use four dominant discourses regarding the purposes and significance of service-learning: (a) a …

Formal Verification Of Urban Traffic System Using The Concept Of Fuzzy Workflow Simulation, Manuj Darbari, Abhay Kumar Srivastava, Sanjay Medhavi Jan 2009

Formal Verification Of Urban Traffic System Using The Concept Of Fuzzy Workflow Simulation, Manuj Darbari, Abhay Kumar Srivastava, Sanjay Medhavi

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Modeling complex urban traffic system requires extensive use of workflow methodologies which can simulate almost real time traffic situations. Number of studies were done in the field of Urban Traffic Simulation like PLOTS, NETSIM and PALAMICS but none of them could provide a real formal solution. Our paper proposes a methodology using Fuzzy Petri nets for modeling real time traffic system. Fuzzy Petrinets are also visualised and tested by using Flow- Charter and HPSIM software packages. These packages help in providing successive iterations of process model for further refinement.

Machine Translation In A Multilingual Electronic Meeting, Milam Aiken, Mina Park Jan 2009

Machine Translation In A Multilingual Electronic Meeting, Milam Aiken, Mina Park

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Electronic meetings can be more efficient and effective than traditional, oral discussions, but until only recently, groups with no common language could not benefit from machine translation. Although it is possible for linguists or other staff members using machines to translate comments during a multilingual discussion, the research presented here shows that this is not feasible for large groups speaking many languages. As a solution, we propose a fully automated multilingual meeting system, and an example of its use in a meeting with Chinese, Korean, and English comments shows its potential to reduce multinational communication barriers.

Introduction: Advances In The Early Detection Of Reading Risk, Jennifer M. Thomson, Tiffany Hogan Jan 2009

Introduction: Advances In The Early Detection Of Reading Risk, Jennifer M. Thomson, Tiffany Hogan

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

As we write the prologue to this Special Issue of the Journal of Learning Disabilities, "Advances in the early detection of reading risk," the U.S. National Early Literacy Panel has recently released its report, “Developing Early Literacy” (National Early Literacy Panel, 2008). A chapter of the report is devoted to reviewing studies that attempt to identify the most accurate preschool and kindergarten predictors of later outcomes in reading and spelling. The report is affirmative of an emerging consensus that the very early status of skills directly related to literacy: alphabet knowledge, phonological awareness, rapid automatic naming (RAN), phonological memory and …

Early Speech Motor Development: Cognitive And Linguistic Considerations, Ignatius S. B. Nip, Jordan R. Green, David B. Marx Jan 2009

Early Speech Motor Development: Cognitive And Linguistic Considerations, Ignatius S. B. Nip, Jordan R. Green, David B. Marx

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

This longitudinal investigation examines developmental changes in orofacial movements occurring during the early stages of communication development. The goals were to identify developmental trends in early speech motor performance and to determine how these trends differ across orofacial behaviors thought to vary in cognitive and linguistic demands (i.e., silent spontaneous movements, babble, and first words). Movements of the lower lip and jaw were recorded using a three-dimensional motion capture system. Twenty-four infants were observed every 3 months, from 9 to 21 months of age. Jaw and lower lip speed, and lower lip range of movement increased with age. Silent spontaneous …

Mrcraig: Mapreduce And Ensemble Classifiers For Parallelizing Data Classification Problems, Glenn Jahnke

Master's Projects

In this paper, a novel technique for parallelizing data-classification problems is applied to finding genes in sequences of DNA. The technique involves various ensem- ble classification methods such as Bagging and Select Best. It then distributes the classifier training and prediction using MapReduce. A novel sequence classification voting algorithm is evaluated in the Bagging method, as well as compared against the Select Best method.

Future Of Appellate Sentencing Review: Booker In The States, The Symposium: Criminal Appeals: Sentencing Appeals, John F. Pfaff

Faculty Scholarship

In this Article, I look at the theoretical implications of the United States Supreme Court‘s recent contradictory sentencing cases, and I then examine how they are playing out in practice at the state level. Though Booker purports to follow, not repudiate, Blakely, its view of the role of appellate courts is wholly inconsistent with Blakely‘s view. Many states have sidestepped this contradiction by simply following Blakely and ignoring the option laid out in Booker. But at least three states have chosen to pass through the door opened by Booker. Their experiences allow us to examine the implications of Booker and …
