Design And Evaluation Of Three Alternative Keyboard Layouts For A Five-Key Text Entry Technique, Barbara Millet Dec 2009

Design And Evaluation Of Three Alternative Keyboard Layouts For A Five-Key Text Entry Technique, Barbara Millet

Open Access Dissertations

Despite the increase in popularity of handheld devices, text entry on such devices is becoming more difficult due to reduced form factors that limit display size, input modes, and interaction techniques. In an effort to circumvent these issues, research has found that five-key methods are effective for text entry on devices such as in-car navigation systems, television and gaming controllers, wrist watches, and other small devices. Five-key text entry methods use four directional keys to move a selector over an on-screen keyboard and an Enter key for selection. Although other researchers have described five-key character layouts using alphabetical order and …

Internationalization Of General Education Curriculum In Missouri Community Colleges: A Faculty Perspective, Gavin Caje O'Connor Dec 2009

Internationalization Of General Education Curriculum In Missouri Community Colleges: A Faculty Perspective, Gavin Caje O'Connor

Dissertations

Providing global educational experiences for students in higher education has been a topic of discussion for decades. Although there is a common appreciation that students should be exposed to and gain awareness of other cultures, most institutions of higher education in the U.S. fall short in providing such opportunities. To accommodate for this need, some institutions are striving to internationalize the curriculum as well as the culture of the institution. Community colleges play a key role in the higher education system in the U.S. and may be the first, if not only opportunity for students to gain global awareness. This …

Taking Back The Knife: The Ulu As An Expression Of Inuit Women's Strength, Patricia Hansen Gillam Dec 2009

Taking Back The Knife: The Ulu As An Expression Of Inuit Women's Strength, Patricia Hansen Gillam

Rural Development

The ulu is an enduring object in the lives of Inuit women which has multiple meanings as both a tool and symbol of traditional subsistence activity. While it continues to be recognized as a symbol of identity for Inuit women across the Arctic, it has received little attention by Western scientists and academics. Following the twists and turns of both de-colonizing and engendering the ulu encourages a comprehension of the profoundly symbolic meaning of the ulu with respect to Inuit women's identity. The collecting phase of the Smithsonian in Alaska and the classifying impulse of archaeological reports are examined for …

Hybrid Matching And Risk Assessment Of The Misspelled Names Hmra, Cihan Varol Dec 2009

Hybrid Matching And Risk Assessment Of The Misspelled Names Hmra, Cihan Varol

Theses and Dissertations

Companies acquire personal information from phone, World Wide Web, or email in order to sell or send an advertisement about their product. However, when this information is acquired, moved, copied or edited, the data may loose its quality. Often, the use of data administrators or a tool that has limited capabilities to correct the mistyped information can cause many problems. Moreover, most of the correction techniques are particularly implemented for the words used in daily conversations. Since personal names have different characteristics compared to general text, firstly, we proposed a hybrid matching algorithm (PNRS) which employs phonetic encoding, string matching …

The Effects Of Number And Level Of Restructuring In Insight Problem Solving, James N. Macgregor, John B. Cunningham Dec 2009

The Effects Of Number And Level Of Restructuring In Insight Problem Solving, James N. Macgregor, John B. Cunningham

The Journal of Problem Solving

Insight problem solving is characterized by restructuring. We hypothesized that the difficulty of rebus puzzles could be manipulated by systematically varying the restructurings required to solve them. An experiment using rebus puzzles varied the number of restructurings (one or two) required to solve a problem and the level at which the restructuring took place (sub-word level, word level, and supra-word level). Solution rates were higher for one restructuring than two, and higher for restructuring at the supra-word level (relation between words) than at lower levels. To explain the findings, we suggest that rebus puzzles initially engage normal reading processes, which …

Design Of A Fuzzy Gain Scheduling Controller Having Input Saturation: A Comparative Study, Yan-Wen Huang, Pi-Cheng Tung Dec 2009

Design Of A Fuzzy Gain Scheduling Controller Having Input Saturation: A Comparative Study, Yan-Wen Huang, Pi-Cheng Tung

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

A fuzzy gain scheduling proportional controllers that exhibits the improved performance than the conventional linear fixed gain controller having input saturation is proposed in this paper. We proposed an adaptive anti-windup control system in which the gain of a proportional controller is dynamically tuned by a fuzzy PD system. The methodology employed in the analysis is based on the describing function (DF), which is determined the range of the universal discourse for the output of the fuzzy PD system. Other approaches are the linear quadratic regulator (LQR) method and combined back-calculation and generalized conditioning anti-windup. In this paper, a comparison …

An Acoustic Phonetic Analysis Of African American English: A Comparative Study Of Two Dialects, Catherine A. Adams Dec 2009

An Acoustic Phonetic Analysis Of African American English: A Comparative Study Of Two Dialects, Catherine A. Adams

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

In this thesis, I contribute acoustic phonetic data and analysis to the study of African American English (AAE). For this research, I collected speech samples of self-identified AAE speakers and speakers of a dominant coexisting dialect, the Northern Cities Shift (NCS). I analyze these samples to determine if vowel quality and vowel duration are consistently and predictably varied between the two dialects. Labov's Chain Shift Principles are used as the context for the results.

In my analysis, I find that both vowel quality and duration are different between AAE and NCS in ways previously undocumented in the linguistic literature. The …

Uncertainty In Measurements And Cognitive Engineering Analysis Of A Decision Support System For Power System Reconfiguration, Venkata Krishna Pendurthi Dec 2009

Uncertainty In Measurements And Cognitive Engineering Analysis Of A Decision Support System For Power System Reconfiguration, Venkata Krishna Pendurthi

Theses and Dissertations

Accuracy of the measurement data used for the decision making process or for shipboard operations and control is very important to ensure the reliability and survivability. The uncertainties present in measurement data need to be minimized for reliable system operation. In this work, a fuzzy logic based model is developed to deal with uncertainty in the meter data. Operational and historical parameters of the meters were used to determine a ‘trust’ value of individual meter. A fuzzy correction system for measurement data was used to generate an input dataset for a genetic algorithm based reconfiguration system. Additionally, with the goal …

Effectiveness Of A Time Out From Reinforcement Package For Escape-Maintained Behaviors Exhibited By Typically Developing Children In Head Start, Melissa Marie Harber Dec 2009

Effectiveness Of A Time Out From Reinforcement Package For Escape-Maintained Behaviors Exhibited By Typically Developing Children In Head Start, Melissa Marie Harber

Theses and Dissertations

This investigation identified children whose noncompliant behavior was maintained by negative reinforcement through brief functional analysis conditions and then evaluated the effectiveness of a contraindicated treatment (i.e., time-out package) for decreasing the noncompliant behavior to developmentally appropriate levels. The current results provided initial supporting data that time-out, in conjunction with other treatment variables, can be an effective strategy in reducing escape maintained noncompliance. Brief experimental analysis conditions consistent with the methodology demonstrated by Northup and colleagues (1991), were utilized to identify escape as the maintaining variable for noncompliance. Following identification of the function of the behavior, baseline data were collected. …

An Empirical Evaluation Of The Progress And Achievement Of English Language Learners In A Suburban School District, Marlynn Kessler Martin Dec 2009

An Empirical Evaluation Of The Progress And Achievement Of English Language Learners In A Suburban School District, Marlynn Kessler Martin

Theses and Dissertations

The legislation of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) has brought to educators’ attention the need, requirement, and demand that all children are guaranteed an equitable education. In support of this mandate, Assistant Deputy Secretary of the United States Department of Education Kathleen Leos (2006) states, “There are approximately 5 ½ million non-English-speaking students in the United States public schools, speaking 440 different languages and 80% of those English language learners speak Spanish” (p. 2). Continuing, Leos reports that English language learners are the fastest growing K–12 population in the United States with 16 states reporting a 200% increase in English …

Parallel Viterbi Search For Continuous Speech Recognition On A Multi-Core Architecture, Naveen Parihar Dec 2009

Parallel Viterbi Search For Continuous Speech Recognition On A Multi-Core Architecture, Naveen Parihar

Theses and Dissertations

State-of-the-art speech-recognition systems can successfully perform simple tasks in real-time on most computers, when the tasks are performed in controlled and noiseree environments. However, current algorithms and processors are not yet powerful enough for real-time large-vocabulary conversational speech recognition in noisy, real-world environments. Parallel processing can improve the real-time performance of speech recognition systems and increase their applicability, and developing an effective approach to parallelization is especially important given the recent trend toward multi-core processor design. In this dissertation, we introduce methods for parallelizing a single-pass across-word n-gram lexical-tree based Viterbi recognizer, which is the most popular architecture for Viterbi-based …

Machine Learning-Based Ontology Mapping Tool To Enable Interoperability In Coastal Sensor Networks, Shruthi Bheemireddy Dec 2009

Machine Learning-Based Ontology Mapping Tool To Enable Interoperability In Coastal Sensor Networks, Shruthi Bheemireddy

Theses and Dissertations

In today’s world, ontologies are being widely used for data integration tasks and solving information heterogeneity problems on the web because of their capability in providing explicit meaning to the information. The growing need to resolve the heterogeneities between different information systems within a domain of interest has led to the rapid development of individual ontologies by different organizations. These ontologies designed for a particular task could be a unique representation of their project needs. Thus, integrating distributed and heterogeneous ontologies by finding semantic correspondences between their concepts has become the key point to achieve interoperability among different representations. In …

An Exploratory Study Of The Effect Of Instruction On Student, Gladys E. Vint

Theses and Dissertations

Although substantial research has been conducted regarding the instruction of reading, students are still not reaching a desired level of reading competency (Snow, Burns, & Griffin, 1998). The Reading First program was established to address this dilemma. In order to examine the impact the Reading First method of teaching reading had on the schools in Arkansas, a population was identified and classified into four categories: funded Reading First and non-funded Reading First, and matched control groups for both funded and non-funded. These schools were followed for three years, first grade through the third grade year, by obtaining achievement data obtained …
