Gender Differences In Communication:Implications For Salespeople, Daniel H. Mcquiston, Kathryn A. Morris Jan 2009

Gender Differences In Communication:Implications For Salespeople, Daniel H. Mcquiston, Kathryn A. Morris

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

As more women enter into the traditionally male-dominated occupations of sales and purchasing, an understanding of gender differences in communication can provide salespeople with added information to increase their effectiveness. 1his paper begins with a review of the research on gender differences in verbal and non-verbal communication and then applies these findings to the field of sales. The paper concludes with managerial implications and recommendations for how salespeople might account for gendered aspects of their communications and by so doing potentially increase the effectiveness of their sales process.

Athletic Inspiration: Vladimir Nabokov And The Aesthetic Thrill Of Sports, Tim Harte Jan 2009

Athletic Inspiration: Vladimir Nabokov And The Aesthetic Thrill Of Sports, Tim Harte

Russian Faculty Research and Scholarship

Athletic Inspiration: Vladimir Nabokov and the Aesthetic Thrill of Sports” addresses Nabokov’s propensity for highlighting in his fiction, poetry, and other writings the theme of athletics and, in particular, the act of observing athletes in action. Expanding upon an early Berlin essay Nabokov wrote about boxing, competition, and sports spectatorship, this article focuses on the prominence of sports in Glory, Lolita, Pnin, and a number of poems, among other works.

Through literature, Nabokov celebrated the tendency for sports to stir the imagination and transform ordinary, physical reality into an active, joyful, and ultimately revelatory experience for athletes, spectators, and, it …

On Account Of Race Or Color: Race As Corporation And The Original Understanding Of Race, Reginald Oh Jan 2009

On Account Of Race Or Color: Race As Corporation And The Original Understanding Of Race, Reginald Oh

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

Oh describes this essay as a critique of constitutional and political discourse on "race" and argues that current equal protection doctrine operates under a conception of race that undermines rather than moves forward the goal of achieving racial equality. That understanding defines race solely or primarily as a physical trait or characteristic, and unjustifiably rejects other, more robust notions of race. He argues that the notion of race as physical trait is inconsistent with the historical understanding of race that served as the basis for the Reconstruction Amendments. A careful examination of nineteenth and early twentieth century court decisions, decisions …

Convergence In Human Dialogues Time Series Analysis Of Acoustic Feature, Spyros Kousidis, David Dorran, Ciaran Mcdonnell, Eugene Coyle Jan 2009

Convergence In Human Dialogues Time Series Analysis Of Acoustic Feature, Spyros Kousidis, David Dorran, Ciaran Mcdonnell, Eugene Coyle

Conference papers

Convergence of acoustic/prosodic (a/p) features between two speakers is a well-known property of human dialogue. It has been suggested that this particular aspect of human interaction should be implemented in spoken dialogue systems, so that they can be perceived as more “humanlike”. This paper presents a quantitative analysis method that can provide information required for modeling the phenomenon of convergence. The analysis is a combination of TAMA, a previously introduced data extraction method, and bivariate time series analysis. Results show significant correlation of a/p features between speaker dyads in the recorded dialogues analyzed, and indicate a significant, amount of feedback, which …

Corpvis: An Online Emotional Speech Corpora Visualisation Interface, Charlie Cullen, Brian Vaughan

Conference papers

Our research in emotional speech analysis has led to the construction of several dedicated high quality, online corpora of natural emotional speech assets. The requirements for querying, retrieval and organization of assets based on both their metadata descriptors and their analysis data led to the construction of a suitable interface for data visualization and corpus management. The CorpVis interface is intended to assist collaborative work between several speech research groups working with us in this area, allowing online collaboration and distribution of assets to be performed. This paper details the current CorpVis interface into our corpora, and the work performed …

Exploring Early Childhood Education And Care Policy In Ireland: Critical Discourse Analysis As A Methodological Tool, Rachel Kiersey Jan 2009

Exploring Early Childhood Education And Care Policy In Ireland: Critical Discourse Analysis As A Methodological Tool, Rachel Kiersey

Conference Papers

The Irish government have invested considerably in the broad early childhood education and care (ECEC) sector over the last decade. However, a distinction persists within Irish policy between childcare and early education, both structurally and conceptually. Early education frequently refers to intervention based pre-school services; conversely childcare frequently refers to the broad spectrum of care services for 0-12 year olds, from family based child care through to centre-based provision (Hayes & Bradley, 2006; NESF, 2005; OECD, 2004). As a result of this, ‘early childhood services in Ireland are fractured across the welfare (childcare) and educational (early education) domains and … …

Individual Accountability For Human Rights Abuses: Historical And Legal Underpinnings, Steven R. Ratner, Jason S. Abrams, James L. Bischoff Jan 2009

Individual Accountability For Human Rights Abuses: Historical And Legal Underpinnings, Steven R. Ratner, Jason S. Abrams, James L. Bischoff

Book Chapters

The international legal community is beset today with talk of accountability. Governments, international organizations, non-governmental organizations, and scholars speak of the need to hold individuals responsible for official acts that violate the most cherished of international human rights. Some study the nature of various infractions with an eye toward codification; others seek to create or engage mechanisms for trying or otherwise punishing individuals. Their common mission is based on a shared understanding that international law has a role to play not only in setting standards for governments, non-state actors, and their agents, but in prescribing the consequences of a failure …

The Resilience Of Law, Joseph Vining Jan 2009

The Resilience Of Law, Joseph Vining

Book Chapters

One of the striking developments in academic law in the past half century is the reconception of law as one of the social sciences. The idea at work in this movement, as Joseph Vining says in this essay, is not that the law should use the findings of other disciplines for its own purposes and in its own way, but that in some deep way law itself - legal thinking, legal life - can and ought to proceed on the premises of social science, indeed of science itself. This is in one sense obviously impossible: a scientific rule is a …

Challenging Monohumanism: An Argument For Changing The Way We Think About Intercountry Adoption, Shani King Jan 2009

Challenging Monohumanism: An Argument For Changing The Way We Think About Intercountry Adoption, Shani King

Michigan Journal of International Law

In Part I, this Article provides a brief history of ICA. In Part II, using a post-colonialist theoretical framework, the work of legal scholars from the past twenty years on the subject of ICA is explored. This analysis exposes the centrality of MonoHumanism to our discourse on ICA. In Part III, this Article illustrates how our discourse regarding intercountry adoption contributes to our violating the rights of children (and families) as they are defined in the CRC. Lastly, in Part IV, this Article explores how this argument fits into the current and somewhat polarized debate on ICA and how the …

What Factors Can An Agency Consider In Making A Decision?, Richard J. Pierce Jr Jan 2009

What Factors Can An Agency Consider In Making A Decision?, Richard J. Pierce Jr

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

In State Farm, the Supreme Court said that an agency decision is arbitrary and capricious if the agency did not consider adequately a relevant factor or did consider an impermissible factor. The Court did not indicate how courts should distinguish among three categories of potential decision making factors: mandatory, discretionary but permissible, and impermissible. Until 2007, the case law in both the D.C. Circuit and the Supreme Court addressed these questions in sensible ways. In particular, both courts held consistently that congressional silence with respect to a logically relevant factor rendered the factor a permissible factor that an agency could …

Challenging Monohumanism: An Argument For Changing The Way We Think About Intercountry Adoption, Shani M. King

UF Law Faculty Publications

The Convention on the Rights of the Child' (CRC) provides a legal framework that establishes a child's right to be raised in the context of her family and her culture. We regularly violate this most fundamental right of children because we fail to come to terms with our imperialist orientation toward the world. This failure has been caused, in part, by how we have constructed our way of thinking about intercountry adoption. We now have a conception of intercountry adoption that I refer to in this Article as MonoHumanism. In the context of intercountry adoption, MonoHumanism means that children …

The Implications Of Language Documentation For An Endangered But Vibrant Language Community: A Historical Perspective, Stephen A. Marlett Jan 2009

The Implications Of Language Documentation For An Endangered But Vibrant Language Community: A Historical Perspective, Stephen A. Marlett

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

Documentation of an endangered language may be a short project that is carried out with urgency and with primarily academic benefits because the speakers are not passing on the language to others. This paper presents historical perspective on a quite different kind of situation. The documentation of the Seri language has taken place over a considerable period of time and with goals that were primarily community-focused. It documents some of the challenges that have been present during those years and also the benefits of that documentation that are just now beginning to be felt by the speakers of that language.

The Doctoral Degree In English Education, Allen Carey-Webb Jan 2009

The Doctoral Degree In English Education, Allen Carey-Webb

KSU Press Legacy Project

The Doctoral Degree in English Education gathers the testimonies of graduate students and their professors, mostly former public school language arts teachers, as they develop their abilities as English teachers, earn the most advanced degree in their field, become professional leaders, and begin teaching at the university level. Responding to an on-going national shortage of professors of English education, this book provides first-hand information on deciding to pursue a doctorate, undertaking graduate studies, teaching university methods courses, writing dissertations, and entering the field as a professor of English education.

The Space Between: Intersubjective Possibilities Of Transparency And Vulnerability In Art Education, Sara Wilson Mckay Jan 2009

The Space Between: Intersubjective Possibilities Of Transparency And Vulnerability In Art Education, Sara Wilson Mckay

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

This paper argues for the pedagogical value of the pursuit of transparency and vulnerability in art education. The author defines transparency and vulnerability in the context of art, offering subsequent pedagogical examples of both. Possibilities are born through intersubjectivity and answerability, the Bakhtinian notion that considers "how shall I say [do] anything when the other can answer?" (Bakhtin, 1990; Nielsen, 2002). The author asserts that art educators should pursue an idea of transparency and encourage an open attitude toward vulnerability in their pedagogy to emphasize intersubjective relationships and social possibilities through art. The author discusses artwork by Kelli Connell and …

Economic Credit In Renaissance Florence, John Padgett, Paul D. Mclean Jan 2009

Economic Credit In Renaissance Florence, John Padgett, Paul D. Mclean

Working Papers

What were the social and institutional factors that led to, and reinforced, the

precocious emergence of Florentine commercial capitalism,3 especially in the domain of

international merchant-banking? The dominant stream of answers, emphasized by

economic historians and by economists, focuses on the invention in late-medieval and

Renaissance Italy of a variety of innovative business techniques – bills of exchange,

double-entry bookkeeping, partnership contracts, commercial courts. If these impressive

organizational inventions are interpreted as facets of a broader rise of impersonal market

rationality, then a tension emerges in Florentine, and indeed in European, historiography

between economic historians and the work of social …

Rhymes With Rich: Power, Law, And The Bitch, Yvonne A. Tamayo Jan 2009

Rhymes With Rich: Power, Law, And The Bitch, Yvonne A. Tamayo

St. Thomas Law Review

For over six centuries, bitch has been used as a term of contempt toward women. Originally, bitch referenced a sensual or promiscuous woman, and later evolved to include a woman considered angry, spiteful, or malicious. Today, the term includes a woman deemed aggressive, competitive, or domineering. Despite its definitional nuances, bitch remains an unequivocal expression of hostility used to denounce, harass, and insult women who, by acting outside of their prescribed gender roles, threaten the established paradigm of power as an inherently male characteristic. Part I of this article examines the animus behind the bitch epithets levied against women in …

Hungary, Slovakia, And Romania: International Relations Examined Through Minority Language Education, Julianna Connelly Stockton Jan 2009

Hungary, Slovakia, And Romania: International Relations Examined Through Minority Language Education, Julianna Connelly Stockton

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The Hungarians in Romania and Slovakia are not just ethnic minorities but also linguistic minorities whose language has almost no linguistic similarity to their host nations’ language. One aspect of life in which linguistic minority issues arise most frequently is that of education. Should minority linguistic groups be forced to learn the national language in order to attend school or participate in official functions or should the government provide or allow for education in their native language?

The ethnic Hungarian minorities did not, for the most part, emigrate from Hungary to these other countries by choice the way most immigrants …

Thinking Of The Frame Otherwise: Putting Art Education Into The Abyss Of The Real, Jan Jagodzinski Jan 2009

Thinking Of The Frame Otherwise: Putting Art Education Into The Abyss Of The Real, Jan Jagodzinski

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

This paper argues against designer capitalism's perpetuation of consummatory experience- the 'oral-eye.' An attempt is made to introduce a form of 'psychoanalytic deconstruction,' as a strategy to retain a critical art education. I attempt this by examining two images on the covers of Art Education published in 1998. The argument was formulated in 1998 and presented at NAEA's millennium conference In Los Angeles.

Pachucos, Chicano Homeboys And Gypsy Caló: Transmission Of A Speech Style, Maryellen Garcia Jan 2009

Pachucos, Chicano Homeboys And Gypsy Caló: Transmission Of A Speech Style, Maryellen Garcia

Ethnic Studies Review

The term caló is well-known within many Mexican American communities as a bilingual slang that is one of several speech styles in the community repertoire, closely associated with Pachuco groups of the U.S. Southwest that came to prominence in the 1940's. But the term caló predates its introduction to the U.S. by many decades. With roots in a Romany-based germanio of the 16th century, from the speech of immigrant gypsies evolved a new Spanish-based argot, the result of language shift from Romany to Spanish over centuries. By the 19th century, caló referred to a Spanish-based criminal argot called "caló jergal" …

Inside The Image And The Word: The Re/Membering Of Indigenous Identities, Dina Fachin Jan 2009

Inside The Image And The Word: The Re/Membering Of Indigenous Identities, Dina Fachin

Ethnic Studies Review

By appropriating the power of writing of the phonetic Latin alphabet and recent visual technology, new generations of indigenous people from the Americas have been able to articulate and reinforce their own sense of identity from "within" their cultural constructs. In so doing, they have been shaping new narratives of indigenous adaptation and survival based on native ontologies and epistemologies that critically decolonize the homogenizing forces of national and global rhetoric. I argue that the texts under examination put forward ways to conceive and to know individual and communal identity that cannot be understood outside specific, ancient notions of territoriality …

Deliberative Democracy In Severely Fractured Societies, Adeno Addis Jan 2009

Deliberative Democracy In Severely Fractured Societies, Adeno Addis

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

The world is full of boundaries. Whatever their nature, boundaries provide the conditions for communal or individual identity and agency, and they make collective action possible. That very capacity to define and contain, however, allows boundaries to "close off possibilities of being that might otherwise flourish." Paradoxically, boundaries "both foster and inhibit freedom." This article explores how one particular boundary-ethnicity- has served both as an important source of identity and a cause of deep fracture in societies that this article calls "severely fractured." The purpose of the article is to explore what institutional structures and processes might be appropriate to …

Persistence, Resistance, And Change: Toward A Critical Praxis For Student Researched Writing, Bryna L. Siegel

Open Access Dissertations

This project re-situates and re-defines researched writing, examines the persistence of the current-traditional model in college curriculums, investigates why resistance to the current-traditional model has often failed, and offers a solution which realigns researched writing with current rhetoric and composition research, theory, and pedagogical paradigms. The dissertation investigates the following research questions: What is the traditional research paper? How does it manifest in classrooms? How do teachers think and talk about this persistent genre? I critique the theoretical, ideological, and historical assumptions that exist in terms of the purposes of researched writing, and claim that a more critical aim for …
