Effective Strategies For General And Special Education Teachers, Heather A. Martel Jan 2009

Effective Strategies For General And Special Education Teachers, Heather A. Martel

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Today’s teachers are asked to educate ALL students using research-based strategies in inclusive classrooms. The following review will include three research based instructional strategies and one teaching model all of which are elements that can increase the success of students at risk for learning problems. Instructional strategies explored in this review are class-wide peer tutoring, direct instruction and the behavioral strategy of self-monitoring. The teaching model is known as co-teaching, a model which is becoming the norm in schools in southeast Michigan. It is hypothesized that concrete knowledge of research based instructional methods that can be used in co-teaching situations …

Creative Maladjustment: Engaging Personal Narrative To Teach Diversity And Social Justice, Ilene L. Ingram Jan 2009

Creative Maladjustment: Engaging Personal Narrative To Teach Diversity And Social Justice, Ilene L. Ingram

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

We all have stories-beautiful and ugly stories-neat ending and never ending stories. When personal narratives, the stories that come closest to the human ex- perience, are used as pedagogy, they can be windows offering views of different worlds and people. In this way, personal narratives become lanterns that illumi- nate the real and imagined fences that divide us as human beings. The intention of this article is to give an account of both how and why I use personal narrative as a pedagogical method to teach diversity and social justice.

Book Review: Queer Inclusions, Continental Divisions: Public Recognition Of Sexual Diversity In Canada And The United States By David Rayside, Karen Busby Jan 2009

Book Review: Queer Inclusions, Continental Divisions: Public Recognition Of Sexual Diversity In Canada And The United States By David Rayside, Karen Busby

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Queer Inclusions is a fascinating and well-written comparative examination of the politics of sexual diversity in Canada and the United States. David Rayside focuses on how political and legal issues affecting gay and lesbian relationship recognition, parenting, and schooling have played out in these two countries over the last decade. The author, who is not a lawyer, does an excellent job reviewing law reform processes and outcomes in an accurate yet not overly technical manner. His reliance on a variety of methodological techniques makes for a solid, well-tested analysis. In particular, I found his comparative analyses on the influence of …

Book Review: The Arapaho Language By Andrew Cowell, With Alonzo Moss Sr., Neyooxet Greymorning Jan 2009

Book Review: The Arapaho Language By Andrew Cowell, With Alonzo Moss Sr., Neyooxet Greymorning

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The Arapaho Language is divided into five primary analytical areas on phonology, inflectional morphology, derivational morphology, usage, complex clauses, and syntax. Under these headings an additional 21 subfields and numerous grammatical rules are also provided. One feature that makes this book particularly beneficial is its extensive use of narrative texts, historical accounts, and life experiences of several individuals as examples for discussing how grammatical rules work within the language, which also provides helpful examples of the subtleties, complexity, and flexibility used by Arapaho speakers that differ from other Algonquian languages.

Although it is clear that this book is written primarily …

Book Review: A Grammar Of Crow: Apsáalooke Aliláau By Randolph Graczyk, Rose Chesarek Jan 2009

Book Review: A Grammar Of Crow: Apsáalooke Aliláau By Randolph Graczyk, Rose Chesarek

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

On my desk is an old, unbound manuscript, a hand copy of a Crow grammar written by a Jesuit missionary in the late 1800s. Randolph Graczyk’s A Grammar of Crow: Apsáalooke Aliláau is the first extended grammar of my language since that time. That alone makes it an important contribution to American Indian linguistics and to the study of Crow. It is also a first-class effort. His work is based on a prize-winning dissertation at the University of Chicago, but has been revised and expanded into a general descriptive format to make it accessible to any language scholar interested in …

Efficient Definition And Communication Of Patent Rights: The Importance Of Ex Post Delineation, William Hubbard Jan 2009

Efficient Definition And Communication Of Patent Rights: The Importance Of Ex Post Delineation, William Hubbard

All Faculty Scholarship

As with any area of law, rights and duties relating to patents should be clearly communicated in an efficient manner. Unfortunately, uncertainty concerning the scope of the rights granted by patents frequently results in expensive litigation. Most proposals for reducing this uncertainty do not examine its root causes and focus only on measures to provide additional clarification in patent applications. Such ex ante proposals are often inefficient because considerable uncertainty is inherent, given the limits of language and of our ability to foresee future developments. In addition, ex ante clarification often would be wasteful because so few patents are valuable …

Would New Yorkers Help A Lost Child? 1976 V 2008?, Amanda Verdi Jan 2009

Would New Yorkers Help A Lost Child? 1976 V 2008?, Amanda Verdi

Modern Psychological Studies

To test the notion of urban "stimulus overload" (Milgram, 1970), this study replicates a 1977 "lost child" experiment, with a child (age 9 or 10) asking 146 New Yorkers for help. As expected: (a) The rate of New Yorkers who helped a lost child rose significantly, from 46% in 1977 to 61.6% in 2008. (b) When debriefed and told that the lost child was actually part of an experiment, only 11% of New Yorkers expressed a negative reaction, compared with 55% who reacted positively. In fact, the more helpful one's behavior, the more positive their later reaction to debriefing (r …

Beyond Collapse: Reclaiming Rationality And Scientific Method From The Global Disorder, Mcmurtry Jan 2009

Beyond Collapse: Reclaiming Rationality And Scientific Method From The Global Disorder, Mcmurtry

Societies Without Borders

This analysis explains why the currently instituted value-sets of “rationality” and “scientific method” select for unforeseen consequences of economic, social and ecological system collapse. Laying bare the era's unifying paradigm of “rational choice” across theory (e.g., game theory, contractarianism, prisoner's dilemma) and practice (global business, geostrategic analysis, armed war and mass-media sport), the analysis exposes the systematic disconnection of rationality and its lead vector of scientific method from the needs and capacities of life-systems. Only if rational and scientific standards are grounded in life-enabling purpose and means consistent with it, the argument shows, can they be made coherent with life …

Three Different Phonological Approaches Moving One Child Towards Intelligible Speech, Kelly Walus Jan 2009

Three Different Phonological Approaches Moving One Child Towards Intelligible Speech, Kelly Walus

Honors Capstones

For my Capstone, I will research, contrast, and then apply three different phonological approaches to therapy to the same four year old female with unintelligible speech. The three different phonological approaches are multiple oppositions, phonemic categories development, and construct of complexity. Each phonological approach has different targets to therapy but all have the same ultimate goal of intelligible speech. Multiple oppositions use multiple sound pairs to help the child reduce homonomy and integrate their knowledge of sound sets. Facilitating underlying phonemic category uses complete emersion of phonemic sounds though training and assessments in hope that the mass quantity of input …

Gendering The Declaration, Fionnuala Ní Aoláin Jan 2009

Gendering The Declaration, Fionnuala Ní Aoláin

Articles

As the Universal Declaration on Human Rights celebrates its sixtieth anniversary this article examines the gendered foundations of the document. Drawing on its drafting history the article concludes that despite considerable advances contained within it the document has many limitations. Over the years, greater attention has been focused on the ways in which the Universal Declaration has advanced claims for gender equality. As the document's influence and status have magnified, its gendered boundaries are in plainer sight. Moreover, as feminists have systematically exposed the entrenched biases of international law, the Universal Declaration does not emerge from scrutiny unscathed. This article …

Phonological Processes In Contemporary Spoken Bulgarian, Zdravka Radkova Jan 2009

Phonological Processes In Contemporary Spoken Bulgarian, Zdravka Radkova

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

This study investigates a number of phonological processes observed in the speech of 24 educated Bulgarian speakers. The speech of all subjects was recorded during 30 minute interviews conducted in 2004. Three speech styles were elicited - reading passage, interview and phone conversation - and later transcribed for analysis. Statistical Variable rule analysis was used to investigate the observed patterns of variation in speech. Different internal and external linguistic variables were found to impact the processes of vowel and consonant deletion in speech. Overall, what this study has established is that although certain socio-linguistic factors such as speaker's sex, regional …

The Acquisition Of Chinese Nominal Classifier Systems By L2 Adult Learners, Szu-Yen Liang Jan 2009

The Acquisition Of Chinese Nominal Classifier Systems By L2 Adult Learners, Szu-Yen Liang

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

The present study explores how L2 adult learners of Chinese acquire Chinese classifiers and provides pedagogical suggestions for more effective teaching of Chinese. 29 native speakers of Korean, 29 native speakers of English and 10 Taiwanese native speakers of Chinese were recruited to take part in three empirical tests to identify L2 learners' acquisition of various classifiers denoting shape, animacy, function, and event. The three tests are 1) Classifier Comprehension Test; 2) Classifier Production test; 3) Classifier Prototype Test. In the first test, subjects were asked to match an object that can be denoted by a Chinese classifier listed among …

Narrative Storyline Marking In Safaliba: Determining The Meaning And Discourse Function Of A Typologically-Suspect Pronoun Set, Paul Alan Schaefer Jan 2009

Narrative Storyline Marking In Safaliba: Determining The Meaning And Discourse Function Of A Typologically-Suspect Pronoun Set, Paul Alan Schaefer

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

This study examines the meaning and discourse functions of a typologically unusual set of pronouns (the "N-pronoun" set) in Safaliba, a little-studied Gur language of western Ghana. The phonological structure of the N-pronouns suggests derivation from the regular pronoun form joined to a subject focus marker, rendering suspect the hypothesis that the N-pronoun exists as an independent form. In isolated sentences, substitution of N-pronouns for those of the regular set produces no immediately obvious difference in meaning, suggesting a discourse or pragmatic function.Three main areas of investigation are pursued: the grammatical contexts where the N-pronouns can and cannot occur; the …

'Doing Religion' Overseas: The Characteristics And Functions Of Ghanaian Immigrant Churches In Toronto, Canada, Mensah Jan 2009

'Doing Religion' Overseas: The Characteristics And Functions Of Ghanaian Immigrant Churches In Toronto, Canada, Mensah

Societies Without Borders

While the importance of immigrants' transnational economic activities is readily acknowledged, the cultural factors that facilitate their initiation and sustenance of memberships in multiple locations have been overlooked. It is this lacuna that the present study addresses, using Ghanaian immigrant churches in Toronto as a case study. The paper examines how Ghanaian immigrant churches were founded; how they are organized; and the kinds of social services they provide. While the churches facilitate the settlement of Ghanaian immigrants, through the provision of social services, they seem to, inadvertently, undermine their eventual integration into the broader Canadian society.

Cultural Hybridity: Self-Monitoring And Cultural Frame Switching In Third Culture Kids, Ingmar Gorman Jan 2009

Cultural Hybridity: Self-Monitoring And Cultural Frame Switching In Third Culture Kids, Ingmar Gorman

Theses & ETDs

The first study sought to examine differences between individuals who spent their youth traveling between multiple countries and those who have not had such experiences. Self-monitoring was explored in light of the reported tendency for such traveled individuals to adapt well to foreign cultures. A 62 item survey consisted of five sections. These were: quantitative assessments of international experiences, a Third Culture Kid (TCK) Questionnaire, a Self-Monitoring Scale, an Emotional Self-Efficacy Scale and a Social Desirability Scale. It was hypothesized that TCKs would score significantly higher than non-TCKs on the Self-Monitoring Scale. Despite no statistically significant differences being found between …

La Clasificación De Los Hablantes De Herencia De Español En Los Eeuu: Generación, Simplificación Modal Y Mantenimiento Del Español, Maria Martinez-Mira

Modern Languages & Literatures Articles

A study of the” Enciclopedia del español en el mundo: Anuario 2006-7 " carried out by the Cervantes Institute (http://cvc.cervantes.es/lengua/anuario/anuario_06-07/lengua.htm) presents a comprehensive picture for the future and development of the Spanish language in the world and in the United States in particular. According to the data provided by Cervantes, approximately 14 million people study Spanish in the world, of which 6 million study Spanish in the United States. It is precisely in this country that the study and presence of the Spanish language has a special significance.
