Age-Related Differences In Reaction Time Task Performance In Young Children, Sergey Kiselev, Kimberly A. Espy, Tiffany Sheffield Feb 2009

Age-Related Differences In Reaction Time Task Performance In Young Children, Sergey Kiselev, Kimberly A. Espy, Tiffany Sheffield

Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications

Performance of reaction time (RT) tasks was investigated in young children and adults to test the hypothesis that age-related differences in processing speed supersede a “global” mechanism and are a function of specific differences in task demands and processing requirements. The sample consisted of 54 4-year-olds, 53 5-year-olds, 59 6-year-olds, and 35 adults from Russia. Using the regression approach pioneered by Brinley and the transformation method proposed by Madden and colleagues and Ridderinkhoff and van der Molen, age-related differences in processing speed differed among RT tasks with varying demands. In particular, RTs differed between children and adults on tasks that …

Past Tense Marking By African American English-Speaking Children Reared In Poverty, Sonja Pruitt, Janna Oetting Feb 2009

Past Tense Marking By African American English-Speaking Children Reared In Poverty, Sonja Pruitt, Janna Oetting

Faculty Publications

Purpose: This study examined past tense marking by African American English (AAE)-speaking children from low-and middle-income backgrounds to determine if poverty affects children's marking of past tense in ways that mirror the clinical condition of specific language impairment (SLI). Method: Participants were 15 AAE-speaking 6-year-olds from low-income backgrounds, 15 AAE-speaking 6-year-olds from middle-income backgrounds who served as age-matched controls, and 15 AAE-speaking 5-year-olds from middle-income backgrounds who served as language-matched controls. Data were drawn from language samples and probes. Results: Results revealed high rates of regular marking, variable rates of irregular marking, high rates of over-regularizations, and absence of dialect-inappropriate …

Spatial Representation Across Species: Geometry, Language, And Maps, Barbara Landau, Laura Lakusta Feb 2009

Spatial Representation Across Species: Geometry, Language, And Maps, Barbara Landau, Laura Lakusta

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We review growing evidence that the reorientation system - shared by both humans and nonhuman species - privileges geometric representations of space and exhibits many of the characteristic features of modular systems. We also review evidence showing that humans can move beyond the limits of nonhuman species by using two cultural constructions, language and explicit maps. We argue that, although both of these constructions are uniquely human means of enriching the spatial system we share with other species, their representational formats, functions, and developmental trajectories are quite different, yielding distinctly different tools for empowering human spatial cognition. The capacity to reorient …

Enumclaw School District Summer Reading Program, Lea Kai Tiger

All Graduate Projects

The aim of this project is to improve the elementary summer school program currently offered by the Enumclaw School District by developing a reading program to be used by the summer school instructors. Instruction outside of the school day, characteristics of successful extracurricular programs, why reading needs to be the focus of the summer school program, and what to teach and how to teach reading were researched. Taking the information found after studying the aforementioned topics, a program to be used for the Enumclaw School District summer school was developed. The program consists of lessons, games, and strategies that can …

Kinematic Analysis Of Articulatory Coupling In Acquired Apraxia Of Speech Post-Stroke, Carly J. Bartle-Meyer, Justine V. Goozée, Bruce E. Murdoch, Jordan R. Green Feb 2009

Kinematic Analysis Of Articulatory Coupling In Acquired Apraxia Of Speech Post-Stroke, Carly J. Bartle-Meyer, Justine V. Goozée, Bruce E. Murdoch, Jordan R. Green

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Primary objective: Electromagnetic articulography was employed to investigate the strength of articulatory coupling and hence the degree of functional movement independence between individual articulators in apraxia of speech (AOS). Methods and procedures: Tongue-tip, tongue-back and jaw movement was recorded from five speakers with AOS and a concomitant aphasia (M = 53.6 years; SD = 12.60) during /ta, sa, la, ka/ syllable repetitions, spoken at typical and fastrates of speech. Covariance values were calculated for each articulatory pair to gauge the strength of articulatory coupling. The results obtained for each of the participants with AOS were individually compared to those obtained …

Networks Of Heightened Scrutiny In Corporate Law, Reza Dibadj Feb 2009

Networks Of Heightened Scrutiny In Corporate Law, Reza Dibadj

San Diego Law Review

This Article is a follow-up to a previous article, Networks of Fairness Review in Corporate Law (Fairness). After an overview of the fundamentals of the fairness standard and network theory, Fairness deployed network and statistical analyses to conduct an empirical study of the fairness doctrine as articulated by the Delaware Supreme Court and the Delaware Court of Chancery. This initial analysis focused on the fairness standard for one principal reason: it is considered to be the most plaintiff-friendly standard of review, in marked distinction to the well-known business judgment rule (BJR). But there are also four other prominent standards of …

Challenging Colorblind Education: A Descriptive Analysis Of Teacher Racial Attitudes, Melanie S. Hinojosa, Amanda Moras Feb 2009

Challenging Colorblind Education: A Descriptive Analysis Of Teacher Racial Attitudes, Melanie S. Hinojosa, Amanda Moras

Sociology Faculty Publications

Research suggests that many public school teachers are not prepared to deal with the growing number of diverse students in the schools. Questions are raised by researchers about the ability of the current teaching force to adequately meet the needs of the growing number of students of Color in the schools. Small-scale qualitative studies find that many White teachers feel unsure of their ability to teach students of Color, tend to hold stereotypical beliefs about urban students and/ or students of Color, and tend to use cultural deficiency models for explaining their academic performance. To date, no quantitative studies have …

Developmental Considerations And Acculturation Of Children: Measures And Issues, Francesca Lopez Feb 2009

Developmental Considerations And Acculturation Of Children: Measures And Issues, Francesca Lopez

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

This article presents the secondary validation of the Brief Acculturation Rating Scale for Mexican Americans-II (Brief ARSMA-II) for use with children—carried out using two samples of Mexican-descent children (ages = 9-11) from two states ( N = 295). The Brief ARSMA-II was originally normed on adolescents and adults but has been validated and used with children. Ethnic identity development perspectives suggest that the interpretation of scores derived from acculturation measures normed on adolescents and adults may not extend accurately to children. Convergent validity and differential discrimination between groups were examined using scores on the Brief ARSMA-II; scores on an acculturation …

Human Development and School Services Faculty Publications

This investigation evaluated the effects of cuento therapy (an intervention using Spanish-language tales) on children’s self-esteem, affect, and reading test performance. The sample was composed of 58 third-grade Mexican-American students who were randomly assigned to the treatment and control groups. The results showed a mean self-esteem gain score difference between groups in favor of the treatment group for Global, Academic, and General self-esteem scores. Following intervention, the treatment group reported less physiological anxiety than did the control group. The results also showed mean increases in the pre- and post-standardized high-stakes reading test scores for both groups. Other significant findings regarding …

“Corrective Surgery” And The Americans With Disabilities Act, Jeannette Cox Feb 2009

“Corrective Surgery” And The Americans With Disabilities Act, Jeannette Cox

School of Law Faculty Publications

This Article challenges the assumption that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires persons with disabilities to undergo corrective surgery as a precondition to membership in the ADA's protected class. This issue is ripe for discussion because current efforts to amend the ADA, although not focused on the corrective surgery issue, will unsettle the current doctrine underpinning many courts' conclusions that an individual's decision to forgo available medical technology bars her from relief under the ADA. The article aims to make two contributions. First, it argues that the ADA's focus on reshaping cultural responses to disability suggests that individuals need …

Decent Colonialism? Pure Science And Colonial Ideology In The Netherlands East Indies, 1910–1929, Andrew Goss Feb 2009

Decent Colonialism? Pure Science And Colonial Ideology In The Netherlands East Indies, 1910–1929, Andrew Goss

History Faculty Publications

This article examines changes within the Dutch civilising mission ideology after the decline of the Ethical Policy. Support of pure science, scientific knowledge that supposedly transcended ideology and politics, allowed the colonial administration to continue to project their rule as decent and moral, even as conflict and repression dominated colonial politics in the 1920s. The argument starts with the construction of pure science after 1910, under the care of J.C. Koningsberger, out of the research traditions at the Department of Agriculture. It next examines the creation of institutions and agendas of pure science. And finally it analyses the absorption of …

Building Partner Capacity/Security Force Assistance: A New Structural Paradigm, Scott G. Wuestner Colonel Feb 2009

Building Partner Capacity/Security Force Assistance: A New Structural Paradigm, Scott G. Wuestner Colonel

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The Civil Response Corps (CRC) would function much like our military reserve. It would ease the burden on the Armed Forces by allowing the hiring of civilians with critical skills to serve on missions abroad when America needs them. The CRC is a product of the efforts of State Department’s Coordinator for Reconstruction and Stabilization (S/CRS). The core mission of S/CRS is to lead, coordinate, and institutionalize U.S. Government civilian capacity to prevent or prepare for post-conflict situations, and to help stabilize and reconstruct societies in transition from conflict or civil strife, so they can reach a sustainable path toward …

Lovington Mainstreet: Community Economic Assessment, Jeffrey Mitchell, Molly J. Bleecker, Andrew Webb

BBER Publications

An analysis of economic conditions in Lovington, New Mexico, commissioned for its MainStreet program. The regional trade area surrounding Lovington (as determined by drive time analysis), and its downtown MainStreet district are described and displayed in color maps. Selected demographic, housing, and economic data for both Lovington and Lea County are examined. An analysis of pull factors revealed that Lovington has a net inflow of gross receipt tax revenues, largely due to oil and gas industry revenues. Lovington faces many challenges, including flat population growth, low educational achievement levels, a severe housing shortage, and the volatility of the petroleum industry. …

Con Law Center Amicus Briefs

The parties—and the district court below—all agree that the threshold question in this case is whether the individual right to bear arms recently recognized by the Supreme Court in District of Columbia v. Heller, and applied in the context of the federal government and the District of Columbia, must also be protected against state infringement. In modern Supreme Court jurisprudence, the most common means of “incorporating” rights enumerated in the Bill of Rights against the states has been under the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. However, the textually and historically accurate approach to determining whether the Fourteenth Amendment …

A Study Of The Sha-2 Cryptographic Hash Family, Somitra Kumar Sanadhya Feb 2009

A Study Of The Sha-2 Cryptographic Hash Family, Somitra Kumar Sanadhya

Doctoral Theses

This thesis presents a comprehensive study of collision attacks on the SHA-2 cryptographic hash family, focusing on both linearized and nonlinear differential techniques. We systematically analyze 9-round local collisions for the SHA-2 round function, identifying 16 new linearized local collisions with no conflicting conditions, improving upon the Gilbert-Handschuh local collision. Utilizing one of these, we develop an efficient algorithm to generate colliding message pairs for 18-round SHA-256, along with novel differential paths for 19–23 rounds using coding-theoretic methods.

Extending to nonlinear attacks, we provide a unified combinatorial framework for 9-round nonlinear local collisions, generalizing the Nikolić-Biryukov construction and introducing a …
