Semantic And Phonological Priming Effects On N400 Activation In People Who Stutter, Jessica Lauren Huffman
Semantic And Phonological Priming Effects On N400 Activation In People Who Stutter, Jessica Lauren Huffman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
To date, research on mechanistic aspects of fluency disorders has focused heavily on motor contributions to stuttering. Only recently have researchers begun to explore psycholinguistic contributions to stuttering. Psycholinguistic planning for speech heavily involves the activation and processing of lexical information. We used a neuroscience approach to compare word activation in mental lexicon while completing a picture naming task in people who stutter (PWS) versus fluent individuals (PWNS).
Twenty-eight individuals ranging in age from 19 - 52 years old participated in a picture-word priming task adopted from Jescheniak et al. (2002). Electroencephalogram (EEG) was recorded while participants saw black and …
Communicating Qualitative Analytical Results Following Grice’S Conversational Maxims, Jan S. Chenail, Ronald J. Chenail
Communicating Qualitative Analytical Results Following Grice’S Conversational Maxims, Jan S. Chenail, Ronald J. Chenail
The Qualitative Report
Conducting qualitative research can be seen as a developing communication act through which researchers engage in a variety of conversations. Articulating the results of qualitative data analysis results can be an especially challenging part of this scholarly discussion for qualitative researchers. To help guide investigators through this difficult communicative process, the authors suggest Grice’s (1989) Conversational Maxims of Quantity, Quality, Relation, and Manner as general guidelines to follow when formulating and presenting findings in qualitative research products as well as basic assumptions to guide readers when judging the quality of result representations.

Multimodal Text Designers: A Case Study Of Literacy Events In A Multicultural Context, Mary-Virginia Feger
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The erasure of Latino/a adolescents' multiliteracies in school settings affects both their views of education and their entry into the community outside of school. Framed by literacy-as-social-practices perspectives and communities of practice theory, this case study explored what happened when a group of 13 Latino/a adolescents and their Latina teacher engaged in a six-week play production in an after-school program and performed the play for parents. It examined the relationship between the participants' discourse practices and their performance, and determined how they validated their performances. Data collected included observations, interviews, students' written reflective responses, a fieldwork journal, and a DVD …

Theatrical Ideology: Toward A Rhetoric Theatricality, Jacob L. Robertson
Theatrical Ideology: Toward A Rhetoric Theatricality, Jacob L. Robertson
Theses and Dissertations
When used in common vernacular, the terminology of the medium of theatre—"theatricality," "drama," "performance," "acting," "scene," etc."”form a vocabulary of "ideographs" as defined by Michael Calvin McGee. My analysis reveals that common usage of theatrical terms is more than merely metaphorical; the "theatre," rather, is a fundamental orienting concept for defining lived experience—it is ideology. By viewing the use of theatrical language as ideological, and analyzing how such terms define situations rhetorically, we begin to reveal the underlying ideology upon which the medium of theatre operates, and which it unconsciously conveys. I demonstrate this claim by analyzing the argument made …

The Relationship Of Language And Emotion Understanding To Sociable Behavior Of Children With Language Impairment, Jami L. Potter
The Relationship Of Language And Emotion Understanding To Sociable Behavior Of Children With Language Impairment, Jami L. Potter
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between emotion understanding and language ability to the sociable behavior in children with language impairment (LI) and their typically developing peers. Twenty-nine children with LI and 29 age- and gender-matched peers with typical language were used in this study. Sociability was rated by his/her classroom teacher using the Teacher Behavior Rating Scale (Hart & Robinson, 1996). Language ability was assessed using the Comprehensive Assessment of Spoken Language (Carrow-Woolfolk, 1999). To assess emotion understanding, each participant was asked to perform several structural dissemblance tasks. Children with LI received scores significantly lower …
Twenty Teaching Proficiency Through Reading And Storytelling (Tprs) Lessons For The Spanish I Classroom, Anne Marie Taulbee
Twenty Teaching Proficiency Through Reading And Storytelling (Tprs) Lessons For The Spanish I Classroom, Anne Marie Taulbee
Theses and Dissertations
With the emergence of new teaching methods in foreign language such TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling, formerly Total Physical Response Storytelling), teachers are faced with the problem of implementing this method into the classroom where it is often met with sceptisim from collegues and admistrators. By using TPRS, teachers focus on providing comprehensible input in a "top down" model. By using elements of both methods, namely storytelling for vocabulary and grammatical structures as well as discreet grammar explanation, teachers can use both methods in a way that is effective. The focus of this thesis is to provide teachers …
Reinventing Virtue: Sensibility And Sentiment In The Works Of Maria Edgeworth, Octavia Cathryn Sawyer
Reinventing Virtue: Sensibility And Sentiment In The Works Of Maria Edgeworth, Octavia Cathryn Sawyer
Theses and Dissertations
While literary scholars have written extensively about sensibility in the past two decades, most of the studies have treated either the history of sensibility itself or how it interacted with a particular aspect of English culture and literature, such as sexuality or politics. My project instead examines how a single author, Maria Edgeworth, used sensibility in her writing over the course of her career. I analyze the use of sensibility in three of her novels: Belinda (1801), her first full-length novel; The Absentee (1812), her influential Irish national tale, written at the height of her popularity in the middle years …

Silent Epidemic Of Depression In Women In The Middle East And North Africa Region : Emerging Tribulation Or Fallacy?, Liyam Eloul, Aamal Ambusaidi, Samir
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Background: As the world is being gripped by economic depression, international psychological epidemiologists have amassed evidence to suggest that psychological depression and its variants are becoming leading contributors to the global burden of disease with the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region being no exception. Aim: The main aim of the present discourse, based on a review of the available literature, is to discuss critically whether women in the MENA region have a higher rate of psychological depression than those in other parts of the globe. Result: From the present synthesis, it emerges that the rate of depression may …

Frsmc Design For The Steering Control And Diving Control Of Underwater Vehicles, Tzu-Chun Kuo, Ying-Jeh Huang, Hung-Hsiu Yu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
A robust control method is proposed for the steering and diving control systems of autonomous underwater vehicles. Heading angle and heave position tracking are achieved. All the closed-loop poles in the sliding mode can be placed by using the sliding mode and root locus techniques. Fuzzy logic technique is further employed to effectively tune the control law. Parameter variation and external disturbance such as various vehicle speeds and the ocean current effect are overcome.
Collaborative Writing In Wikis: Insights From Culture Projects In Intermediate German Classes, Nike Arnold, Lara Ducate, Claudia Kost
Collaborative Writing In Wikis: Insights From Culture Projects In Intermediate German Classes, Nike Arnold, Lara Ducate, Claudia Kost
Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
This presentation reports the findings of a study designed to investigate the collaborative writing and revision processes of foreign language learners in a wiki environment. Specifically, it is based on a comparison of two wiki projects in intermediate German classes in which small groups of students used wikis to collaborate on a project based on cultural and historical topics related to a novel. The archived versions of the wiki were analyzed for the amount, type, and quality of revisions. In addition, an end-of-semester survey was administered to assess learner attitudes towards the project and perceptions of the writing process.

The Role Of Conversation In Health Care Interventions: Enabling Sensemaking And Learning, Kurt C. Stange
The Role Of Conversation In Health Care Interventions: Enabling Sensemaking And Learning, Kurt C. Stange
Faculty Scholarship
Background. Those attempting to implement changes in health care settings often find that intervention efforts do not progress as expected. Unexpected outcomes are often attributed to variation and/or error in implementation processes. We argue that some unanticipated variation in intervention outcomes arises because unexpected conversations emerge during intervention attempts. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the role of conversation in shaping interventions and to explain why conversation is important in intervention efforts in health care organizations. We draw on literature from sociolinguistics and complex adaptive systems theory to create an interpretive framework and develop our theory. We use …
Beyond Orthographic Segmentation: Neurophysiological Evidence That Pseudo-Derived Word Stems Are Processed Semantically, Theresa Herbert
Beyond Orthographic Segmentation: Neurophysiological Evidence That Pseudo-Derived Word Stems Are Processed Semantically, Theresa Herbert
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Morphological segmentation while reading is essential for new vocabulary learning. The study's aim was to investigate semantic-level morphological segmentation using event-related brain potentials (ERPs) in typical young adult readers. Past research has suggested that, because semantically opaque words prime their stems (e.g., corner/corn) similarly to transparent words (e.g., farmer/farm), readers recognize complex words from their constituent morphemes without regard to semantic information. However, this priming effect may be due to orthographic and phonological overlap between prime and target words. The research presented here addressed this possibility by creating five conditions in which orthographic, phonological, and semantic relationships between …

Qualcomm V. Broadcom: Implications For Electronic Discovery, Milton H. Luoma, Vicki M. Luoma
Australian Digital Forensics Conference
Electronic discovery has been the source of difficult challenges for courts, lawyers, and litigants from the beginning. The methods, document formats, and scope of electronic discovery have all contributed to the difficulties encountered. The seminal case in the United States that underscores the nature of the difficulties and challenges facing lawyers and courts in electronic discovery is Qualcomm v. Broadcom. While the case has been cited as an example of the ethical issues facing lawyers who do not follow the rules of discovery, the lessons go well beyond ethical issues. All major common law countries, including Australia, New Zealand, United …
Transformational Processes And Learner Outcomes For Online Learning: An Activity Theory Case Study Of Spanish Students, Joseph M. Terantino
Transformational Processes And Learner Outcomes For Online Learning: An Activity Theory Case Study Of Spanish Students, Joseph M. Terantino
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this exploratory study was to examine the actions of online language learners from an activity theoretical perspective. It also attempted to explain how the students' learning outcomes evolved from their online learning experiences. This explanation placed an emphasis on the learners' previous experiences, defining their activity systems, the use of mediational tools, and the resolution of contradictions. Within this activity theoretical case study a background survey, four interviews, and three field observations were conducted with seven foreign language students of an online Spanish course. The students' on-screen actions were recorded and subsequently documented in a video episode …

Automated Identification Of Adverbial Clauses In Child Language Samples, Jessica Celeste Clark
Automated Identification Of Adverbial Clauses In Child Language Samples, Jessica Celeste Clark
Theses and Dissertations
In recent years, computer software has been used to assist in the analysis of clinical language samples. However, this software has been unable to accurately identify complex syntactic structures such as adverbial clauses. Complex structures, including the adverbial clause, are of interest in child language due to differences in the development of this structure between children with and without language impairment. The present study investigated the accuracy of new software, called Cx, in identifying adverbial clauses. Two separate collections of language samples were used. One collection included 10 children with language impairment, 10 age-matched peers, and 10 language-matched peers. A …
