The Problem With Eating Money: Remittances And Development Within Senegal's Muridiyya, Rebecca F. Sheff May 2009

The Problem With Eating Money: Remittances And Development Within Senegal's Muridiyya, Rebecca F. Sheff

Political Science Honors Projects

Contemporary development theory is poorly equipped to understand remittance-based development occurring in transnational spaces that partially escape the control of the state. An extended case study of the Muridiyya, a Sufi brotherhood in Senegal, reveals how collective remittances from Mouride transmigrants become tools for community-level development when channeled through transnational religious associations. I argue that remittance-based development projects transform the political, economic, and social contexts in which they are embedded, including the relationship between the Muridiyya and the state. Development theory must be reconceptualized to account for how remittance-based development defies conventional understandings of the scales of economic and social …

An Overview Of Historical Beaver Management In Arizona, Christopher D. Carrillo, David L. Bergman, Jimmy Taylor, Dale Nolte, Patrick Viehoever, Mike Disney May 2009

An Overview Of Historical Beaver Management In Arizona, Christopher D. Carrillo, David L. Bergman, Jimmy Taylor, Dale Nolte, Patrick Viehoever, Mike Disney

Wildlife Damage Management Conference

In the mid-1820s, Anglo-American fur trappers, known as "mountain men," entered Arizona and began trapping beaver (Castor canadensis). In Arizona there have been a number of famous mountain men such as Sylvester and James Pattie, Ewing Young, Jededia Smith, and Bill Williams who trapped along the waterways in northern and southern Arizona. Although the heyday of mountain men lasted only a few decades due to a population decline of beaver, management of these animals continues to this day. The purpose of managing beavers shifted from monetary gain to controlling wildlife damage. During the late 1900s, beaver were still …

Exploring Writing Of English Language Learners In Middle School: A Mixed Methods Study, Robin L. Danzak

Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

The study's purpose was to assess, through mixed methods, written linguistic features of 20 Spanish-speaking English language learners (ELLs) in middle school. Students came from Mexico, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic. Participants wrote two expository and two narrative formal texts, each in Spanish and English, for a total of eight writing samples each. Additionally, students developed 10 journal entries in their language of choice, and 6 randomly selected, focal participants were interviewed for the qualitative analysis. The quantitative analysis involved scoring formal texts at the lexical, syntactic, and discourse levels. Scores were analyzed using Friedman's 2-way ANOVA by ranks, …

Designing A Village Water Supply System In Papua New Guinea: A Case Study In Third World Delopment, Barak Bruerd

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Papua New Guinea (PNG) is the second largest island in the world and one of the most biologically and culturally diverse nations on the planet. One of the last true stone age people, they are struggling with the delicate balance of entering the 21st century without losing their unique cultural heritage or devastating the fragile ecosystem they have lived in harmony with for thousands of years. Slow, careful steps are needed in order to ensure sustainable development; however the hardships of living close to nature - disease, drought, malnutrition, and lack of access to healthcare services, are causing Papua New …

The Afro-Cuban Abakuá: Rhythmic Origins To Modern Applications, Donald Brooks Truly May 2009

The Afro-Cuban Abakuá: Rhythmic Origins To Modern Applications, Donald Brooks Truly

Open Access Dissertations

The objective of this doctoral essay is to help shed some light on the Afro-Cuban musical style called the Abakuá. This essay traces the development of the Abakuá secret society and its music from its ancestral beginnings in Africa (with the Èfik and Efut Leopard Societies), through its movement into Cuba and the development of the first lodge (in the eighteen hundreds), to its eventual influence in America. This essay also describes the impact the Abakuá has had on music in general, but especially the music of the Cuban Rumba and Afro-Cuban jazz. Detail is given on many different aspects …

Exploring Teachers' And Black Male Students' Perceptions Of Intelligence, Patrick Anthony Williams May 2009

Exploring Teachers' And Black Male Students' Perceptions Of Intelligence, Patrick Anthony Williams

Open Access Dissertations

This study explored teachers' perceptions of intelligence of 11th-grade Black male students and how students themselves perceived their own intelligence in light of Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligence. Qualitative research methods were used to gain novel understanding of the students' and teachers' feelings, and perceptions as outlined in the research questions. Two versions of ecological systems theory provided the underpinnings for the framework of this study: 1) Brönfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Theory, and 2) Spencer's PVEST (Phenomenological Variant of Ecological Systems Theory) model, which is an adaptation of the ecology model to Black students in the United States. In a …

An Investigation Of A Mississippi Whole Schools Initiative Model School, Robert Mamrak May 2009

An Investigation Of A Mississippi Whole Schools Initiative Model School, Robert Mamrak

Theses and Dissertations

Researchers are finding that the No Child Left Behind legislation's mandatory testing provision has resulted in many schools reducing art instruction (Abrams, Madaus, & Pedulla, 2003). In addition to the reduction of art instruction in formal curricula, incorporation of art into classroom teaching strategies has also declined (Barksdale-Ladd & Thomas, 2000). While many schools neglect art to focus on subject areas addressed by No Child Left Behind mandated tests, others have embraced the arts as an instructional strategy to improve test scores (Rabkin & Redmond, 2006). Mississippi's Whole Schools Initiative, a school improvement program that infuses art throughout the curriculum, …

The Low Percentage Of African American Faculty In A Southern Community College, Annie Lou Brown Burns May 2009

The Low Percentage Of African American Faculty In A Southern Community College, Annie Lou Brown Burns

Theses and Dissertations

Community colleges are crucial to American social and economic progress. They provide access to higher education for millions who cannot afford to attend a 4-year college or a university. For the past 20 years, there has been a consistent increase in enrollment in community colleges. This increase has included students of all ages and ethnic groups. While the African American student population in community colleges has increased as have other student populations, the percentage of African American instructors has not increased. Minority instructors and administrators in community colleges are not represented in numbers equivalent to minority student enrollment or to …

Understanding The Impact Of Technical Assistance On Early Care And Education Sites In Mississippi Rural Communities, Kimberly Mechelle Triplett

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine if early childhood teachers can enhance literacy and language development in preschool children and strengthen the literacy with the support of an on-site technical assistant (TA). The present investigation sought to explore two questions: Is there a statistically significant difference between classroom environments for which teaching early literacy skills, as measured by the Early Language and Literacy Classroom Observation Toolkit (ELLCO) Research Edition of three and four-year-olds participating in the on-site technical assistance model when compared to classroom environments in programs where early childhood teachers did not participate? and Is there a …

Australian English Rising Intonation: Frequency And Function During Talk-In-Interaction, Susan Buescher May 2009

Australian English Rising Intonation: Frequency And Function During Talk-In-Interaction, Susan Buescher

Linguistics ETDs

Research on Australian English has shown that in this variety, a high-rising intonation contour typically used with yes/no questions, is also often used with declarative statements (Guy et al. 1986, Fletcher et al., 2002, 2005). Previous researchers, working with data from sociolinguistic interviews have claimed that the Australian high-rising terminal (HRT) pitch contour functions as a floor-holding device to mitigate semantic complexity (Guy et al., 1986, Guy and Vonwiller 1989). However, the notion of \u2018semantic complexity has not been well-defined, and despite its proposed role in turn-taking, there have been no studies to date which have taken into account the …

Revisionism About Free Will: A Statement And Defense, Manuel R. Vargas May 2009

Revisionism About Free Will: A Statement And Defense, Manuel R. Vargas

Philosophy

This article summarizes and extends the moderate revisionist position I put forth in Four Views on Free Will and responds to objections to it from Robert Kane, John Martin Fischer, Derk Pereboom, and Michael McKenna. Among the principle topics of the article are (1) motivations for revisionism, what it is, and how it is different from compatibilism and hard incompatibilism, (2) an objection to libertarianism based on the moral costs of its current epistemic status, (3) an objection to the distinctiveness of semicompatibilism against conventional forms of compatibilism and (4) whether moderate revisionism is committed to realism about moral responsibility.

Immigration, Trade And Home Country Development: State-Level Variation In The Us Immigrant-Export Link, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse May 2009

Immigration, Trade And Home Country Development: State-Level Variation In The Us Immigrant-Export Link, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse

Economics

This article examines the pro-trade influence of immigrants using data on state-level exports from the 48 contiguous USA to 28 countries during the year 1993. Immigrants from lesser developed countries are found to exert stronger proportional effects on state-level exports relative to the immigrants from more developed countries. Calculation of absolute immigrant effects at state, regional and national levels also reveal influences of immigrants from developing countries are of greater magnitude; however, results depend on the metric employed to categorize countries as developing or developed. The findings emphasize the importance of immigrants’ connections to business and social networks and allow …

Diasporic Identities In Israel: A Study Of Ethiopian Jews, Erich S. Roberts May 2009

Diasporic Identities In Israel: A Study Of Ethiopian Jews, Erich S. Roberts

Anthropology Department Honors Papers

Contemporary concerns of anthropology stress the role of power relations in framing the study of a marginalized people within society. In this study, the present predicament of the Ethiopian community in Israel is examined through the highly political processes of nationalism, ethnic conflict, and identity construction. Each of these factors hold implications for the ways by which a dominant European nationalist ideology in Israel has come to impose forces of authority upon subjugated, non-European ethnic groups. The Ethiopians are one such group. The point of divergence between the community of Ethiopian Jews and Israel’s national identity has caused the Ethiopian …

Early Childhood Public School Teacher Licensure For The Fifty States And Washington, D.C.: An Inquiry To Ascertain Student Age Ranges For Public School Teacher Licensure May 2009, R. Caudle Jones, S. Martin, M. Crandall

AAES Research Reports and Research Bulletins

There is a need for birth through kindergarten (B-K) public school licensure in the state of Arkansas. In Arkansas, licensure for teachers of young children is for pre-kindergarten through fourth grade (P-4). Teachers who receive P-4 licenses are often less prepared to work with children under age six than with older children. A more appropriate license would be a B-K license. A teacher with B-K licensure would be prepared to meet the emotional, social, physical, and cognitive needs of young children. This document is an inquiry to ascertain student age ranges for public school teacher licensure in the fifty states …

Some Irregular Haiku, A Anil

Word Ways

These poems have 17 syllables but unapologetically fail the 5-7-5 line pattern for haiku. Let me unapologise. Japanese haiku in English translation also usually fail that test and must even be teased into 17 syllables. To the purist I say: only Japanese haiku, untranslated, are true haiku.

Sudoku Lines Factorised, Jeremy Morse

Word Ways

It is a demerit of Sudoku that there is nothing of memorable interest in the final diagram, once the pleasure of solving is over. One way to mitigate this is to factorise individual lines, each of which containes the nine digits unrepeated.

Exchanging Antonyms, Susan Thorpe

Word Ways

Antonyms have long been favourites of the readers of Word Ways, either as themselves (ODD-EVEN) or in disguise. In the latter case, they may be hidden in other word pairs such as in FATE - THINE, SHIN - SHOUT and BANDED - BORED where they occur at the beginnings, ends and in the middles of the word pairs respectively, the other letters remaining the same.
