Finish-A-Rhyme-Story: A Rhyme Cloze Assessment For Preschool Children, Kimberly Jeanne Condie Jun 2009

Finish-A-Rhyme-Story: A Rhyme Cloze Assessment For Preschool Children, Kimberly Jeanne Condie

Theses and Dissertations

Educators need measurement tools to determine phonological awareness in young children. This study investigated the appropriateness of rhyme cloze tasks, referred to as Finish-a-Rhyme-Story items, which were designed to measure preschool and kindergarten children's early rhyme development. The rhyme cloze tasks required children to verbally complete a sentence by filling in a final rhyming word that matched a rhyme pattern highlighted in a short story that was read aloud to them. The task required rhyme awareness as well as comprehension of the language in the story. Twenty-four items were individually administered to preschool (n = 207) and kindergarten (n = …

Getting Hotter : How Could China’S Climate Change Policy Trajectory Impact A Post-Kyoto Accord?, Gloria Jean Gong Jun 2009

Getting Hotter : How Could China’S Climate Change Policy Trajectory Impact A Post-Kyoto Accord?, Gloria Jean Gong

Conference on China and Global Climate Change : Reconciling International Fairness and Protection of the Atmospheric Commons

China’s unprecedented economic growth has given rise to equally rapid increases in greenhouse gas emissions. China has already ratified the Kyoto and Montreal Protocols, yet as the international community looks beyond Kyoto, China’s willingness to adhere to binding emissions standards remains a critical question. This study describes and analyzes the factors that influence China’s possible participation in a binding greenhouse gas emissions treaty. Existing international treaty compliance models often overlook China’s own official policies and stances toward such treaties. This study examines China’s current climate change policy, historical adjustments of that policy, and potential future trajectory to determine the factors …

Using Movement And Kinesthetic Learning To Teach Academics In A Fourth Grade Classroom, Elise Fulginiti Jun 2009

Using Movement And Kinesthetic Learning To Teach Academics In A Fourth Grade Classroom, Elise Fulginiti

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research study was to determine what happens when movement and kinesthetic learning are implemented academically in a fourth-grade regular education classroom. Kinesthetics were used to help teach a social studies unit on Europeans in New Jersey and were later infused into the classroom curriculum. Qualitative inquiry strategies such as video-taped lessons, student written feedback, individual interviews, and observations written in my own teacher research journal were used to collect data. Sorting and categorizing data within and between data sources revealed that the kinesthetic learning lead to increased understanding of the topics being studied, heightened student engagement, …

A Poem, A Fervid Lyric, In An Unknown Tongue: Translation, Multilingualism, And Communication In Charlotte Brontë'S Shirley, Amanda Bishop Erdmann Jun 2009

A Poem, A Fervid Lyric, In An Unknown Tongue: Translation, Multilingualism, And Communication In Charlotte Brontë'S Shirley, Amanda Bishop Erdmann

Theses and Dissertations

In this essay, I will argue that looking at translation and multilingualism both as a mode of storytelling and as a theme of Brontë's second published novel Shirley can help to uncover previously untapped moments of connection and understanding in the novel. Brontë's exploration of translation and use of multilingualism reveals a sincere urge to connect in spite of tremendous difficulties—connect her characters to each other, connect her narrator to her readers. It is an ambitious, over-reaching goal, which Brontë did not ultimately attain. Yet, for Brontë, her (especially female) characters, and her narrator, translation in all its forms represents …

Contemporary Perceptions Of Immigrants As Threats: Is The Perceived "Criminal Immigrant" Image Supported?, Rosa Elena Chang Jun 2009

Contemporary Perceptions Of Immigrants As Threats: Is The Perceived "Criminal Immigrant" Image Supported?, Rosa Elena Chang

Open Access Dissertations

This study examined Americans' perceptions of immigrants as threats and their implications on immigration policy views as well as immigrants' actual involvement in crime. Images of immigrant groups result from the perceived threats they pose to the crime rate, economy, political power, and nativism (Blumer 1958). I argued that these perceptions result in opposition to immigrants and support for stronger measures to exclude undocumented immigrants. Of special interest for this study was the "criminal immigrant" stereotype. Previous studies demonstrate that immigrants are not highly crime-involved even when they experience additional stressors during their adaptation processes. Yet, according to Agnew's (1992) …

Global Learning Through Partnered Inquiry, Rebecca Hovey

Lewis Global Studies Center Staff Publications

The emergence of Global Learning associated with the internationalization of U.S. higher education signals a convergence of international/global studies and international education with the potential to dramatically innovate and transform the academy. Over the past decade the original aim of international education to foster intercultural understanding has become linked with the aims of international studies to enhance our knowledge of the world, and in particular, the ways in which new knowledge is created through non-western epistemologies and cultural perspectives. This paper seeks to situate the emerging discourse and initiatives around global learning in an understanding of the transformation potential of …

Partner Selection Of Strategic Alliance For A Liner Shipping Company Using Extent Analysis Method Of Fuzzy Ahp, Ji-Feng Ding

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This paper applies the modified extent analysis method of fuzzy AHP approach for selecting suitable partners of strategic alliance for a liner shipping company. An empirical survey for selecting partners is studied to find out the most appropriate company based on the proposed fuzzy AHP algorithm. To facilitate the main issue for selecting a partner, a hierarchical structure of partner selection for a liner shipping company with seven criteria, thirty-two sub-criteria, and three alternatives was constructed to perform the empirical survey via AHP expert questionnaires. When the operations of fuzzy AHP algorithm are computed, the optimal alternative is selected as …

Student And Teacher Perceptions Of Motivational Strategies In The Foreign Language Classroom, Ashley Ruesch Jun 2009

Student And Teacher Perceptions Of Motivational Strategies In The Foreign Language Classroom, Ashley Ruesch

Theses and Dissertations

Motivational research has recently shifted focus to include what role teachers, and the motivational strategies they use, play in the language learning classroom (Cheng & Dörnyei, 2007; Dörnyei & Csizer, 1998). Motivational research has traditionally gathered data from either teachers or students. However, researchers have recently been calling for a shift in focus from this individualistic perspective to evaluating motivation more holistically (Dörnyei, 2001a; Oxford, 2003; Ushioda, 2006). Nevertheless, few studies have included the opinions of both the students and teachers. This study has elicited the opinions of both students and teachers to find out which teaching practices both groups …

Decision Analysis For Construction Contract Risk-Sharing, Teh-Chang Lee, Ta-Hsing Lee, Ching-Hwang Wang Jun 2009

Decision Analysis For Construction Contract Risk-Sharing, Teh-Chang Lee, Ta-Hsing Lee, Ching-Hwang Wang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

As the risk-sharing provisions in domestic public construction contracts are not completely fair and reasonable, contract disputes often arise as a result which in turn cause delays, quality impacts, and other problems that urgently need improvement. Introduced in this article is the development of a decision system for risk-sharing in public construction contracts. Said system was developed through literature review, questionnaire and interviews of experts, fuzzy synthetic evaluation in conjunction of analytic hierarchy process, definition of risks in public construction contracts, and establishment of decision models for risk-sharing. Subsequently, the “escalation” risk was employed as an example to select suitable …

母語教學與培養學生的自我意識 = Self Development & The Use Of Cantonese As The Medium Of Instruction, Perry Lam Jun 2009

母語教學與培養學生的自我意識 = Self Development & The Use Of Cantonese As The Medium Of Instruction, Perry Lam

Conference on “Improving the Human Destiny"

War And Hiv In Latin America, Shawn Smallman Jun 2009

War And Hiv In Latin America, Shawn Smallman

International & Global Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Conflict has shaped the HIV pandemic from its inception, from the spread of HIV-1 in Central Africa, to the diffusion of HIV-2 from Portuguese Africa to the globe. At the same time, the relationship between HIV and conflict has been non-linear and poorly understood. Nancy Mock and her colleagues have been almost the only scholars to propose a model to understand this relationship. Their work suggests that several key variables (such as the time scale of the conflict, the characteristics of the parties involved, and the geographic scale of the fighting) explain wide variations in how warfare appears to have …

Validity Of Seven Syntactic Analyses Performed By The Computerized Profiling Software, Stacy Lynn Minch Jun 2009

Validity Of Seven Syntactic Analyses Performed By The Computerized Profiling Software, Stacy Lynn Minch

Theses and Dissertations

The Computerized Profiling (CP) software extracts several quantitative measures from a transcribed sample of a client's language. These analyses include the Mean Length of Utterance in Words (MLU-W) and in Morphemes (MLU-M), the Mean Syntactic Length (MSL), the Syntactic Complexity Score (SCS), Developmental Sentence Scoring (DSS), the Index of Productive Syntax (IPSyn), and the Picture-Elicited Screening Procedure for LARSP (PSL). The validity of these measures was examined by comparing them to the number of finite nominal, adverbial, and relative clauses contained in samples from 54 first-, 48 third-, and 48 fifth-grade students and 24 young adults. The DSS and SCS …

Being An "Other": The Significance Of Teachers' Lived Experiences In Working With Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Students, Yumiko Otsuki Jun 2009

Being An "Other": The Significance Of Teachers' Lived Experiences In Working With Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Students, Yumiko Otsuki

Dissertations and Theses

The study's goal was to understand what contributes to the formation of teachers' perspectives regarding the education of culturally and linguistically diverse students. Its focus was to portray through teachers' stories the experiences in their lives that may have contributed to constructing who they are as people and as educators.

Four teachers from one rural district participated. Using qualitative methods, the study explores and describes incidents in teachers' lives, looking at the way their life experiences are reflected in their relationships with students. In considering ways in which those experiences may have helped shape teaching philosophies and practices, the study …

Lived Experience: Diverse Perspectives On Raising A Child With Autism, Heather J. Brace

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative study examines the lived experience of culturally diverse caregivers to children with ASD. The study is situated within the theoretical framework of the life-course theory. Specifically, the impact of the transition of diagnosis on the trajectory of the primary caregiver's life-course is explored. Further, coping mechanisms, caregiver burden/satisfaction, diagnosis, and other components which contribute to the larger construct of lived experience are discussed. Participant stories were obtained through the use of interactive interviewing techniques and transcripts were transformed into a cohesive narrative designed to evoke emotion within the reader while preserving the authenticity of the data. Further, the …

Does Sorting Make A Difference In The Sat’S Prediction Of Course Grades And Cumulative Gpa At Macalester College?, Yuen Ting Liu Jun 2009

Does Sorting Make A Difference In The Sat’S Prediction Of Course Grades And Cumulative Gpa At Macalester College?, Yuen Ting Liu

Economics Honors Projects

This paper estimates the predictive power of the SAT for college success. Most studies use GPA as a proxy for college success, but GPA is subject to differing grading standards across instructors and departments. Using individual course grades of Macalester College students from 1996 to 2005, this paper uses fixed effects to control for students sorting themselves into particular departments and courses. After controlling for sorting by major, a general trend emerges: the Math SAT is more predictive for science and math-related social science majors while the Verbal SAT is more predictive for language majors. After controlling for sorting by …

Ethnicity Matters: The Socioeconomic Gradient In Health Among Asian Americans, Emily S. Ihara Jun 2009

Ethnicity Matters: The Socioeconomic Gradient In Health Among Asian Americans, Emily S. Ihara

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This study examines the relationship between socioeconomic indicators and health status among Asian Americans using data from the 2001 California Health Interview Survey (CHIS), a population-based random-digit-dial survey with race-ethnic supplemental samples. Multivariate logistic regression analyses show that the inverse relationship between socioeconomic position and health status is similar for Asian Americans when measured as an aggregate group compared to Whites. However, when specific Asian American ethnic groups are examined, the relationship varies greatly. For example, among Chinese Americans and Vietnamese Americans, education is a significant predictor of poor health status, but household income is more significant among Korean Americans. …

Academic Libraries And The Remaking Of The Canon: Implications For Collection Development Librarians, Julianne Buchsbaum Jun 2009

Academic Libraries And The Remaking Of The Canon: Implications For Collection Development Librarians, Julianne Buchsbaum

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

An issue of central importance for academic librarians of the future will be how to perform successful collection development in a time of narrow budgets and a rapidly expanding universe of information. For librarians in the humanities, in particular, the issue of how to decide what to collect is even more fraught with tensions in a multicultural era in which conventional standards used to evaluate materials have been radically contested and in which the very existence of the canon, or any type of core collection, has been called into question. It will be important to the local culture of the …

Expressive Writing With University Students With Disabilities, Geraldine Lotze Jun 2009

Expressive Writing With University Students With Disabilities, Geraldine Lotze

Theses and Dissertations

Research suggests college students with high incidence disabilities experience more distress than their peers without disabilities as they adapt to college. The expressive writing paradigm developed by Pennebaker and Beall (1986) effectively reduced distress in college students and other nonclinical samples when participants wrote about emotions they experienced surrounding an upsetting event. Previous research on expressive writing has not addressed the effectiveness of the paradigm with students with disabilities. A randomized control trial study examined changes in distress and daily hassles for participants with disabilities who engaged in expressive writing compared to a control condition in which participants wrote about …
