Statistical Dynamics Of Flowing Red Blood Cells By Morphological Image Processing, John M. Higgins, David T. Eddington, Sangeeta N. Bhatia, L. Mahadevan

Publications and Research

Blood is a dense suspension of soft non-Brownian cells of unique importance. Physiological blood flow involves complex interactions of blood cells with each other and with the environment due to the combined effects of varying cell concentration, cell morphology, cell rheology, and confinement. We analyze these interactions using computational morphological image analysis and machine learning algorithms to quantify the non-equilibrium fluctuations of cellular velocities in a minimal, quasi-two-dimensional microfluidic setting that enables high-resolution spatio-temporal measurements of blood cell flow. In particular, we measure the effective hydrodynamic diffusivity of blood cells and analyze its relationship to macroscopic properties such as bulk …

Voting In Group Support Systems : Theory, Implementation, And Results From An Exploratory Study, Kung-E Cheng Jan 2009

Voting In Group Support Systems : Theory, Implementation, And Results From An Exploratory Study, Kung-E Cheng

Dissertations

Group decision making is essential in organizations. Group Support Systems (GSS) can aide groups in making decisions by providing tools and process support. GSS is especially useful for geographically or temporally distributed groups. Researchers of GSS have pointed out that convergence processes are hard to accomplish in GSS. Voting tools in GSS can be a valuable asset in alleviating the difficulty of convergence processes because voting is a concise communication of individual preferences with a well defined procedure that is accepted by group members. In addition, voting results can serve as a group memory of the convergence processes. Field observations …

Dynamic stability requirements for manned aircraft have been in place for many years. However, we cannot expect stability constraints for UAVs to match those for manned aircraft; and dynamic stability requirements specific to UAVs have not been developed. The boundaries of controllability for both remotely-piloted and auto-piloted aircraft must be established before UAV technology can reach its full potential. The development of dynamic stability requirements specific to UAVs could improve flying qualities and facilitate more efficient UAV designs to meet specific mission requirements. As a first step to developing UAV stability requirements in general, test techniques must be established that …

How Can A Video Game Cause Panic Attacks? 1. Effects Of An Auditory Stressor On The Human Brainstem, Judith Lauter, Elizabeth Mathukutty, Brandon Scott Jan 2009

How Can A Video Game Cause Panic Attacks? 1. Effects Of An Auditory Stressor On The Human Brainstem, Judith Lauter, Elizabeth Mathukutty, Brandon Scott

Faculty Publications

The auditory brainstem response (ABR) was recorded during simultaneous binaural presentation of two types of sounds: 1) condensation clicks presented through in-the-ear earphones at 43.1/sec, 60dB nHL; and 2) recordings of breathing sounds, presented through supra-aural headphones, at levels adjusted by participants to be equivalent to the clicks. In alternate blocks, the breathing sounds were either: 1) a recording of quiet breathing (blocks 1, 3, 5); or 2) a recording of erratic (stressed) breathing (blocks 2, 4). The erratic breathing was modeled on a video game soundtrack in which the character was represented as running, wounded, and frightened. Four 2048-sweep …

Hemeproteins Bathed In Ionic Liquids;Examining The Role Of Water And Protons In Redox Behavior And Catalytic Function, John Joseph Moran Jan 2009

Hemeproteins Bathed In Ionic Liquids;Examining The Role Of Water And Protons In Redox Behavior And Catalytic Function, John Joseph Moran

ETD Archive

We investigate the changing behaviors of myoglobin and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) in the near-absence of bulk water and/or protons by using ionic liquid butyl methyl imidazolium tetrafluoroborate as a non-aqueous milieu. Through direct charge transfer and metalloprotein-mediated catalytic reduction of oxygen and nitric oxide, we shed light on diverging aspects on how the two hemeproteins face the scarcity of water and/or protons in bulk. Isotopic effect investigations using D2O further elucidates kinetic aspects of proton transfer. Finally, in the case of NOS oxygenase, pterin cofactor binding and NOS-mediated catalytic oxidation of L-arginine in ionic liquids interrogates proton and water …

Characterization And Differentiation Of Peripheral Blood Derived Multipotent Adult Progenitor Cells, Hari Satya Shankar Addagarla Jan 2009

Characterization And Differentiation Of Peripheral Blood Derived Multipotent Adult Progenitor Cells, Hari Satya Shankar Addagarla

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Stem cells are populations of undifferentiated cells that are found in most tissues and act as precursors for regeneration and maintenance. In the future, they could provide promising therapies for diseases which are to date incurable. Our lab developed a novel cell line from the peripheral blood of adult transgenic green fluorescent protein swine and designated them as Peripheral Blood Derived Multipotent Adult Progenitor Cells (PBD-MAPCs). In this study we characterized the mRNA and protein expression profiles of PBD-MAPCs before and after neural differentiation and investigated the potential of PBD-MAPCs to differentiate into myocardial or neural lineages in vitro. We …

Stress Training Efficacy In An Aviation Context, Christopher K. Mcclernon Jan 2009

Stress Training Efficacy In An Aviation Context, Christopher K. Mcclernon

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2009

Stress is regularly introduced in training to prepare troops for stressful environments and situations, although there is very little empirical evidence for stress training's effectiveness, implementation and pedagogy. Twenty novice participants were recruited and assigned to either a stress-trained (cold pressor), treatment group or a control group. Stress training was effective at improving the treatment group’s performance during a final criterion session on an aircraft navigation task compared to the control group. In addition, the stress-trained group showed lower criterion heart rate variability, skin conductance, and subjective stress ratings compared to the control group. This research demonstrates stress training as …

Emissions Trading Across China: Incorporating Hong Kong And Macau Into An Urgently Needed Air Pollution Control Regime Under One Country, Two Systems, Lin Feng, Jason Buhi

Florida State University Journal of Transnational Law & Policy

China's status as the world's largest sulfur dioxide emitter carries with it serious hazards to human and ecosystem health. The National People's Congress began to address this in 2000, when it promulgated national SO2 emissions caps. By 2010, S02 emissions across the Mainland were supposed to stabilize at pre-set baselines. Rather than decreasing, however, emissions are reaching alarming new levels. China needs a more powerful mechanism, such as an emissions trading scheme (ETS), to achieve lower levels of emissions. The United States' Acid Rain Program provides an almost ideal model, but a unique variable is added when Hong Kong and …

Balance In Herodotus' Histories, Ana Mcgrath Jan 2009

Balance In Herodotus' Histories, Ana Mcgrath

Theses & ETDs

Balance is an important concept in Herodotus' Histories. I use it in my thesis as a broad umbrella term, which covers changes of fortune, mirroring, opposition and retribution. Balance is a cosmic law within the Histories, where every action has a karma-like reaction in order to maintain this balance. Herodotus sets up this theme in his preface to the Histories when referring to cities, "For most of those which were great once are small today; and those which used to be small were great in my own time. Knowing, therefore, that human prosperity never abides long in the same place, …

Design Of Sea Water Heat Exchanger For Miniature Vapor Compression Cycle, James Hughes Jan 2009

Design Of Sea Water Heat Exchanger For Miniature Vapor Compression Cycle, James Hughes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent advances in the development of miniature vapor compression cycle components have created unique opportunities for heating and cooling applications, specifically to human physiological requirements that arise in extreme environments. Diving in very cold water between 1.7 and 5°C requires active heating because passive thermal insulation has proven inadequate for long durations. To maintain diver mobility and cognitive performance, it is desirable to provide 250 to 300 W of heat from an untethered power source. The use of a miniature vapor compression cycle reduces the amount of power (batteries or fuel cell) that the diver must carry by 2.5 times …

Evolution And Human Nature: Comparing Honors And Traditional Pedagogies For The New Science Of The Mind, Scott M. James, Kate Bruce

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

A class on evolutionary psychology can take many forms but always involves an interdisciplinary approach because of the subject matter and topics covered. In this paper, we describe and compare three different pedagogical techniques we have used to teach the topic of evolutionary psychology; two are honors seminars and one a traditional lecture-style course.
