Activity-Aware Electrocardiogram-Based Passive Ongoing Biometric Verification, Janani C. Sriram
Activity-Aware Electrocardiogram-Based Passive Ongoing Biometric Verification, Janani C. Sriram
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Identity fraud due to lost, stolen or shared information or tokens that represent an individual's identity is becoming a growing security concern. Biometric recognition - the identification or verification of claimed identity, shows great potential in bridging some of the existing security gaps. It has been shown that the human Electrocardiogram (ECG) exhibits sufficiently unique patterns for use in biometric recognition. But it also exhibits significant variability due to stress or activity, and signal artifacts due to movement. In this thesis, we develop a novel activity-aware ECG-based biometric recognition scheme that can verify/identify under different activity conditions. From a pattern …

Investigation Of Endocannabinoid Modulation Of Conditioned Responding Evoked By A Nicotine Cs And The Pavlovian Stimulus Effects Of Cp 55,940 In Adult Male Rats, Jennifer E. Murray, Nicole R. Wells, George D. Lyford, Rick A. Bevins
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Rationale — The cannabinoid CB1 receptor antagonist/inverse agonist rimonabant (SR 141716) has been shown to block reinforcing and rewarding effects of nicotine. Research has not investigated whether the cannabinoid system is involved in the interoceptive stimulus effects of nicotine functioning as a conditional stimulus (CS).
Objective — We examined the effects of rimonabant and the CB1/2 receptor agonist, CP 55,940, on responding evoked by a nicotine CS in rats. Additionally, we determined whether CP 55,940 functioned as a CS or a Pavlovian positive drug feature
Materials and methods — Pavlovian discrimination training involved intermixed nicotine (0.2 mg base/kg) and …

Vowel Recognition From Articulatory Position Time-Series Data, Jun Wang, Ashok Samal, Jordan R. Green, Tom D. Carrell
Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications
A new approach of recognizing vowels from articulatory position time-series data was proposed and tested in this paper. This approach directly mapped articulatory position time-series data to vowels without extracting articulatory features such as mouth opening. The input time-series data were time-normalized and sampled to fixed-width vectors of articulatory positions. Three commonly used classifiers, Neural Network, Support Vector Machine and Decision Tree were used and their performances were compared on the vectors. A single speaker dataset of eight major English vowels acquired using Electromagnetic Articulograph (EMA) AG500 was used. Recognition rate using cross validation ranged from 76.07% to 91.32% for …

Using The 2008 Presidential Election To Think About “Playing The Race Card”, Ronald Lee, Aysel Morin
Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications
Bill Clinton and Geraldine Ferraro were accused of “playing the race card” during the 2008 contest for the Democratic presidential nomination. This essay explores the different forms race cards may assume and the dangers each poses to the public dialogue. Moving away from the traditional focus on persuasive effects, the Clinton and Ferraro utterances are analyzed as argumentative discourses. Then, critical standards are promulgated for evaluating their reasonableness.

Temporal Data Classification Using Linear Classifiers, Peter Revesz, Thomas Triplet
Temporal Data Classification Using Linear Classifiers, Peter Revesz, Thomas Triplet
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
Data classification is usually based on measurements recorded at the same time. This paper considers temporal data classification where the input is a temporal database that describes measurements over a period of time in history while the predicted class is expected to occur in the future. We describe a new temporal classification method that improves the accuracy of standard classification methods. The benefits of the method are tested on weather forecasting using the meteorological database from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

In this study, we evaluated the specificity, distribution, and sensitivity of Prevotella strain-based (PF163 and PigBac1) and methanogen-based (P23-2) PCR assays proposed to detect swine fecal pollution in environmental waters. The assays were tested against 222 fecal DNA extracts derived from target and nontarget animal hosts and against 34 groundwater and 15 surface water samples from five different sites. We also investigated the phylogenetic diversity of 1,340 "Bacteroidales" 16S rRNA gene sequences derived from swine feces, swine waste lagoons, swine manure pits, and waters adjacent to swine operations. Most swine fecal samples were positive for the host-specific Prevotella-based PCR assays …

Essential Skills For Evidence-Based Practice: Evidence Access Tools, Jeanne T. Grace
Individual Open Access Articles
In an efficient search for evidence to address clinical questions, clinicians consult trustworthy collections of critically evaluated evidence when those resources exist. The “5S†hierarchy organizes these resources in terms of their usability in clinical practice and suggests which sources to consult first. When relevant evidence cannot be found in one of the more developed resources, the clinician’s ability to conduct an effective and efficient search of the health care literature to locate evidence is a crucial skill for evidence-based practice. Two features of literature database search engines are particularly helpful: subject headings and clinical queries. Subject headings are specific …

Finding The Shoes That Fit: How Derivative Is The Trustee's Power To Avoid Fraudulent Conveyances Under Section 544(B) Of The Bankruptcy Code?, Alan N. Resnick
Cardozo Law Review
Section 544(b) of the Bankruptcy Code, which enables a bankruptcy trustee to avoid transfers that an actual unsecured creditor could have avoided under state law, is a powerful tool most often used to recover assets that were fraudulently transferred several years before a debtor's bankruptcy case. This power is often described as permitting the trustee, for the benefit of the bankruptcy estate and all of the debtor's unsecured creditors, to "stand in the shoes" and assert the rights of the particular unsecured creditor. In a recent case, In re Allou Distributors, Inc., the Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District …

China-United States Trade Negotiations And Disputes: The Wto And Beyond, Pasha L. Hsieh
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
This article examines trade negotiations and disputes between China and the United States. It begins by ascertaining the unique political aspects of China-U.S. bilateral economic ties and explains the historical background underlying the relations. The article then argues that trade frictions between China and the United States are unlikely to repeat the Depression-era trade wars. The article observes that both the Chinese and U.S. governments are aware that the adoption of WTO-inconsistent measures may result in retaliatory actions from the other side. Hence, the two governments have attempted to resolve potential disputes through high-level official talks. Even when certain issues …

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The unique interpersonal qualities of individuals who fall on the so-called ‘psychopathic spectrum’ have been regularly documented since Cleckley’s observations (1941). The literature reflects the importance of understanding individuals who have high and low levels of psychopathic personality traits for research (Lilienfeld, 1998, Patrick, Edens, Poythress, Lilienfeld & Benning, 2006), clinical (Patrick, Hicks, Blonigen & Krueger, 2003) and risk assessment purposes (Skeem, Poythress, Edens, Lilienfeld & Cade, 2003) through bringing forth the position that psychopathic traits can fall on a continuum (Benning, Patrick, Salekin & Leistico, 2005). The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between psychopathic personality …

Bacillus cereus 14579 encodes two tRNAs with the CCA anticodon, tRNATrp and tRNAOther. tRNATrp was separately aminoacylated by two enzymes, TrpRS1 and TrpRS2, which share only 34% similarity and display different catalytic capacities and specificities. TrpRS1 was 18-fold more proficient at aminoacylating tRNATrp with Trp, while TrpRS2 more efficiently utilizes the Trp analog 5-hydroxy Trp. tRNAOther was not aminoacylated by either TrpRS but instead by the combined activity of LysRS1 and LysRS2, which recognized sequence elements absent from tRNATrp. Polysomes were found to contain tRNATrp, consistent with its role in …
