Microbial Nad Metabolism: Lessons From Comparative Genomics, Francesca Gazzaniga, Rebecca Stebbins, Sheila Z. Chang, Mark A. Mcpeek, Charles Brenner
Dartmouth Scholarship
NAD is a coenzyme for redox reactions and a substrate of NAD-consuming enzymes, including ADP-ribose transferases, Sir2-related protein lysine deacetylases, and bacterial DNA ligases. Microorganisms that synthesize NAD from as few as one to as many as five of the six identified biosynthetic precursors have been identified. De novo NAD synthesis from aspartate or tryptophan is neither universal nor strictly aerobic. Salvage NAD synthesis from nicotinamide, nicotinic acid, nicotinamide riboside, and nicotinic acid riboside occurs via modules of different genes. Nicotinamide salvage genes nadV and pncA, found in distinct bacteria, appear to have spread throughout the tree of life …
Optical Acquisition And Polar Decomposition Of The Full-Field Deformation Gradient Tensor Within A Fracture Callus, Wangdo Kim, Sean S. Kohles
Optical Acquisition And Polar Decomposition Of The Full-Field Deformation Gradient Tensor Within A Fracture Callus, Wangdo Kim, Sean S. Kohles
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Tracking tissue deformation is often hampered by material inhomogeneity, so local measurements tend to be insufficient thus lending to the necessity of full-field optical measurements. This study presents a novel approach to factoring heterogeneous deformation of soft and hard tissues in a fracture callus by introducing an anisotropic metric derived from the deformation gradient tensor (F). The deformation gradient tensor contains all the information available in a Green-Lagrange strain tensor, plus the rigid-body rotational components. A recent study [Bottlang et al., J. Biomech. 41(3), 2008] produced full-field strains within ovine fracture calluses acquired through the application of electronic speckle pattern …
Metal-Induced Bystander Effects: Mechanism And Implicationis., Nicola Cogan
Metal-Induced Bystander Effects: Mechanism And Implicationis., Nicola Cogan
Doctoral
The radiation-induced bystander effect is a phenomenon known to occur post irradiation, characterised by the induction of biological effects in unirradiated cells as a result of receiving signals from irradiated cells or their culture medium. Chemicalinduced bystander effects are poorly characterised and there are no reports of a bystander effect induced by metals. Heavy metals and in particular chromium (VI) are known to cause persistent genomic instability. For the first time, this study provides evidence that a short, low-dose exposure of human fibroblasts to chromium (VI) causes a bystander effect in human fibroblasts that persists for at least thirty days …

National Mine Action Strategy Of The Republic Of Croatia, Gichd
Global CWD Repository
In the course of mine action in the Republic of Croatia so far, the most important and most represented activity has been conducting humanitarian demining operations. Since the very beginning of systematic pursuit of demining problem area, the basic issue has always been the question of defining suspected hazardous area. True development of demining capacities starts with the establishment of the Croatian Mine Action Centre and amendments to the Law on Demining by which the market model was introduced.

According to the latest statistics released by the Census and Statistics Department, the Hong Kong population aged 65 and over was 829,300 at the end of 2004. The number of persons aged 65 or older is projected to increase by 17.9% to 978,000, representing 13.2% of population in 2013. This increase in the number and proportion of elderly will intensify the challenges of ageing, which will put further pressure on the government and the society at large. In response to Hong Kong's rapid aging population and in line with the concept of active and successful ageing, the question of how …

Increased Expression Of Mad2 Occurs In Association With Dnmt1 Protein Stabilization And Aberrant Cpg Island Promoter Hypermethylation During Carcinogenesis In Immortalized Bronchial Epithelial Cells, Paul Romo
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
Physicians and scientists must join together and research the specific effects of environmental carcinogens in relation to cancer. A great model to study environmental carcinogenesis is carcinogen-induced lung cancer. We know that 30% of cancer deaths are accredited to lung cancer and that cigarette smoking is the number one cause of lung cancer, other forms of cancer, and cancer deaths worldwide (1). Second hand smoke is also a very serious health concern. Second hand smoke has been chosen as a cancer-causing agent by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the National Toxicology Program and the International Agency for Research on Cancer …

Foreign Body Or Foreign From Body--Congenital Unilateral Lobar Hypoplasia Of Lung, Heeramani Lohana, Syed Rehan Ali, Shakeel Ahmed
Department of Paediatrics and Child Health
We report a rare case of congenital unilateral hypoplasia of the lung without any other anomaly at Aga Khan University Hospital. A 7-month-old male infant presented in emergency room with respiratory distress. There was no history of cough and wheeze. X-ray revealed left sided non homogenous opacity along with right sided hyperinflation. A suspicion of foreign body was made on chest X-ray but bronchoscopy was deferred in view of bilateral equal air entry and absence of wheeze. CT scan showed left upper lobe hypoplasia. Child recovered with supportive therapy and was discharged home. To the best of our knowledge unilateral …

Books and Manuscripts
This report is divided into five sections. The first section assesses the promise of Reconstruction for black South Carolinians in the years after the Civil War, and it situates thiscase study of the South Carolina Land Commission within that historical context. The second section examines in turn the seven tracts of land sold by the Land Commission in LowerRichland County. The research indicates that in two of the tracts, Hickory Hill and Hopkins, African-American families were able to purchase and retain significant acreage for well over acentury. Section three offers some concluding observations, as it presents a set of recommendations …
Effects Of Peanut Processing On Masticatory Performance During Variable Appetitive States., Fiona Mckiernan, Richard D. Mattes
Effects Of Peanut Processing On Masticatory Performance During Variable Appetitive States., Fiona Mckiernan, Richard D. Mattes
Department of Nutrition Science Faculty Publications
Background. Current evidence indicates that peanut consumption reduces cardiovascular disease risk, while posing little threat to positive energy balance. However, questions have been raised as to whether inter- and intraindividual variability in mastication in response to peanut form and processing properties may influence these health effects, since mastication has the potential to alter the bioaccessibility of nutrients within the nut matrix. Objective. To explore the relationship between peanut form and processing and masticatory function.Subjects/Methods. Thirty nine adults (16 M, 23 F; BMI: kg/; age: y) with healthy dentition chewed four different forms of peanuts until they would normally swallow and …
From Diaspora To Nomadic Identity In The Work Of Lispector And Felinto, Paula Jordão
From Diaspora To Nomadic Identity In The Work Of Lispector And Felinto, Paula Jordão
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "From Diaspora to Nomadic Identity in the Work of Lispector and Felinto" Paula Jordão analyzes Clarice Lispector's A Hora da Estrela (1977; The Hour of the Star, Trans. Giovanni Pontiero, 1992) and Marilene Felinto's As Mulheres de Tijucopapo (1982; The Women of Tijucopapo, trans. Irene Matthews, 1994). Despite being stylistically different, Lispector's A Hora da Estrela and Felinto's As Mulheres de Tijucopapo depict protagonists who share the same social and ethnic background and diasporic identity as women from the Northeast of Brazil. A closer look at the narrative trajectory of these two main characters shows us that …

Methods For Calculating Coronary Perfusion Pressure During Cpr, Michael P. Otlewski, Leslie A. Geddes, Michael Pargett, Charles F. Babbs
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
Coronary perfusion pressure (CPP) is a major indicator of the effectiveness of cardiopulmonary resuscitation in human and animal research studies; however methods for calculating CPP differ among research groups. Here we compare the 6 published methods for calculating CPP using the same data set of aortic (Ao) and right atrial (RA) blood pressures. CPP was computed using each of the 6 calculation methods in an anesthetized pig model, instrumented with catheters with Cobe pressure transducers. Aortic and right atrial pressures were recorded continuously during electrically induced ventricular fibrillation and standard CPR. CPP calculated from the same raw data set by …

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
Letter responding to an article predicting the phaseout of government information librarians in a survey of Association of Research Library (ARL) Directors. We criticize this conclusion maintaining that the multifaceted and interdisciplinary nature of government information makes it more critical that libraries users needing government information resources need to have highly trained and specializing librarians with extensive knowledge of these resources assisting them.
