Faculty Field Guide For Promoting Student Civility In The Classroom, Cynthia Clark Sep 2009

Faculty Field Guide For Promoting Student Civility In The Classroom, Cynthia Clark

Nursing Faculty Publications and Presentations

Student incivility is defined as rude and disruptive behavior that, when left unaddressed, may spiral into aggressive or violent behavior. Nursing faculty are challenged by uncivil student behavior and many are underprepared to deal with its effects. Some faculty members consider leaving academe due to the serious toll incivility often takes on their personal and professional lives. The impact of student incivility on faculty is especially troubling during a national nursing shortage. The author provides nursing faculty with several ready-to-use strategies for preventing and effectively dealing with student incivility in nursing education.

The paper highlights how some libraries approached e-metrics to start useful evaluations and dealt with technicalities to achieve better decision making for e-collection, services and infrastructure for their library users. The evaluation of use of e-resources and services is discussed in five parts explaining application of e-metrics, different methods to capture usage data in different settings, types of data requirement by libraries, complexities and technicalities involved in measurement of usage …

Atp Release By Infected Bovine Monocytes Increases The Intracellular Survival Of Mycobacterium Avium Subsp. Paratuberculosis, Seng-Ryong Woo, Raul G. Barletta, Charles Czuprynski Sep 2009

Atp Release By Infected Bovine Monocytes Increases The Intracellular Survival Of Mycobacterium Avium Subsp. Paratuberculosis, Seng-Ryong Woo, Raul G. Barletta, Charles Czuprynski

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis is the etiologic agent of Johne’s disease, a chronic intestinal infection in ruminants. Adenosine 5′-Triphosphate (ATP) has been reported to induce killing of several Mycobacterium species in human and murine macrophages. We investigated whether ATP secreted from M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis-infected bovine monocytes affects intracellular survival of the bacilli. Bovine monocytes constitutively secreted ATP during an 8-day incubation period in vitro; however, M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis infection did not enhance ATP release. Removal of extracellular ATP by the addition of apyrase increased the viability of infected monocytes, but surprisingly decreased the number of viable intracellular …

Counting On Care Work: Human Infrastructure In Massachusetts, Randy Albelda, Mignon Duffy, Nancy Folbre

Center for Social Policy Publications

In Massachusetts, as in every other place in the world, all children need to be cared for and educated, everybody has physical and mental health needs that require attention, and some individuals need assistance with the daily tasks of life because of illness, age, or disability. The labor of meeting these needs – which we call care work – is a complex activity that has profound implications for personal, social and economic well-being. Care work is not just a cornerstone of our economy – it is a rock-bottom foundation. Care work provides the basis for our human infrastructure, and we …

The Effects Of Shoe Traction And Obstacle Height On Lower Extremity Coordination Dynamics During Walking, Leslie M. Decker, Jeremy J. Houser, John M. Noble, Gregory M. Karst, Nikolaos Stergiou Sep 2009

The Effects Of Shoe Traction And Obstacle Height On Lower Extremity Coordination Dynamics During Walking, Leslie M. Decker, Jeremy J. Houser, John M. Noble, Gregory M. Karst, Nikolaos Stergiou

Journal Articles

This study aims to investigate the effects of shoe traction and obstacle height on lower extremity relative phase dynamics (analysis of intralimb coordination) during walking to better understand the mechanisms employed to avoid slippage following obstacle clearance. Ten participants walked at a self-selected pace during eight conditions: four obstacle heights (0%, 10%, 20%, and 40% of limb length) while wearing two pairs of shoes (low and high traction). A coordination analysis was used and phasing relationships between lower extremity segments were examined. The results demonstrated that significant behavioral changes were elicited under varied obstacle heights and frictional conditions. Both decreasing …

Regulating Privatized Government Through § 1983, Richard Frankel Sep 2009

Regulating Privatized Government Through § 1983, Richard Frankel

University of Chicago Law Review

As governments increasingly delegate traditional public functions to private, for-profit entities, the federal civil rights statute, 42 USC § 1983, has the potential to play an important role in encouraging private entities to respect constitutional rights when they take on public duties. That potential is undermined, however, by the prevailing view that private entities subject to § 1983 should be exempt from the traditional tort principle of respondeat superior liability simply because the Supreme Court already has held that municipal entities are exempt. Exempting private entities carries significant implications, not only because of the growing privatization of government functions, but …

The Nanny Corporation, M. Todd Henderson Sep 2009

The Nanny Corporation, M. Todd Henderson

University of Chicago Law Review

Individuals in common pools—for example, employees in firms and citizens in a jurisdiction—want managers of those pools to act paternalistically toward others because this lowers the costs of participating in the pool. The nanny state and, increasingly, the nanny corporation are simply responding to this demand. These two can be thought of as competing in the "market for nannyism" to deliver nannyism to individuals who demand it. Where nannyism is inevitable, as it is in a world in which others pay, the question then becomes which of the two sources of nanny rules—the state or the firm—is the most efficient …

Crisis Governance In The Administrative State: 9/11 And The Financial Meltdown Of 2008, Eric A. Posner, Adrian Vermeule Sep 2009

Crisis Governance In The Administrative State: 9/11 And The Financial Meltdown Of 2008, Eric A. Posner, Adrian Vermeule

University of Chicago Law Review

This Article compares crisis governance and emergency lawmaking after 9/11 and the financial meltdown of 2008. We argue that the two episodes were broadly similar in outline, but importantly different in detail, and we attempt to explain both the similarities and differences. First, broad political processes, rather than legal or constitutional constraints, operated in both episodes to create a similar pattern of crisis governance, in which Congress delegated large new powers to the executive. We argue that this pattern is best explained by reference to the account of lawmaking in the administrative state offered by Carl Schmitt, as opposed to …

U.S. Standing In The World: Causes, Consequences, And The Future, Jeffrey W. Legro, Peter J. Katzenstein Sep 2009

U.S. Standing In The World: Causes, Consequences, And The Future, Jeffrey W. Legro, Peter J. Katzenstein

Political Science Faculty Publications

America’s global standing has become a central concern of U.S. leaders and citizens. U.S. leaders, regardless of party, pledge to “restore U.S. standing” as a central goal of America’s foreign policy agenda. Standing has been the subject of widespread public discussion and intellectual debate.

Yet despite all this attention, three issues fundamental to standing have been relatively ignored:

-What is standing and how has it varied?
-What causes standing to rise and fall?
-What impact does standing have on U.S. foreign policy?

This task force answers these questions by synthesizing what we now know about U.S. standing and/or identifying what …

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Individual change and variation in emotional/behavioral disturbance in children and adolescents with intellectual disability has received little empirical investigation. Based on 11 years of longitudinal data from the Australian Child to Adult Development Study, we report associations among individual differences in level, rate of change, and occasion-specific variation across subscales of theDevelopmental Behavior Checklist (DBC) with 506 participants who had intellectual disability and were ages 5 to 19 years at study entry. Correlations among the five DBC subscales ranged from .43 to .66 for level, .43 to .88 for rate of change, and .31 to .61 for occasion-specific variation, with …

The Relationship Of Infant Feeding And Self-Regulation In Pediatric Obesity, Amy Rebecca Beck Sep 2009

The Relationship Of Infant Feeding And Self-Regulation In Pediatric Obesity, Amy Rebecca Beck

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Pediatric overweight and obesity is a growing national epidemic with 15 percent of children ages 6-19 considered obese and at least 22 percent considered overweight. Although there are many suggested causes, treatments, and preventions for this epidemic, a construct that is showing promise in the current literature as a preventive factor against obesity is breastfeeding in infancy. However, the mechanisms by which breastfeeding may impact later childhood weight are unknown. Some of the literature posits the possibility of self-regulation as a key mechanism in the role of breastfeeding in pediatric overweight/obesity. The purpose of this study was to examine the …
