A Randomised-Controlled Trial Of Two Educational Modes For Undergraduate Evidence-Based Medicine Learning In Asia, Janice M. Johnston, Mary Schooling, Gabriel M. Leung Sep 2009

A Randomised-Controlled Trial Of Two Educational Modes For Undergraduate Evidence-Based Medicine Learning In Asia, Janice M. Johnston, Mary Schooling, Gabriel M. Leung

Publications and Research

Background
As the overall evidence for the effectiveness of teaching of evidence based medicine (EBM) is not strong, and the impact of cultural and societal influences on teaching method is poorly understood, we undertook a randomised-controlled trial to test the effectiveness and learning satisfaction with two different EBM teaching methods (usual teaching vs. problem based learning (PBL)) for undergraduate medical students.

Methods
A mixed methods study that included a randomised-controlled crossover trial with two intervention arms (usual teaching and PBL) and a nested qualitative study with focus groups to explore student perceptions of learning and to assess the effectiveness and …

Regional Young Child Poverty In 2008: Rural Midwest Sees Increased Poverty, While Urban Northeast Rates Decrease, Marybeth J. Mattingly

Carsey Publications

In 2008, America's recession affected poverty rates for children under age 6 unevenly, with rates in the rural Midwest rising significantly, while rates in northeastern central cities fell slightly. And in the rural South, where more than 30 percent of young children are poor, poverty rates for young children persisted at a very high rate. This is an analysis of American Community Survey data released by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Clinician Perceived Barriers To Effective Discharge Planning For Youth Coming Out Of Residential And Inpatient Treatment, Leah Alexandra Jackson Sep 2009

Clinician Perceived Barriers To Effective Discharge Planning For Youth Coming Out Of Residential And Inpatient Treatment, Leah Alexandra Jackson

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This qualitative study examines clinician perceived barriers to successful discharge planning from inpatient and residential treatment settings, as well as factors that may contribute to recidivism. Eight clinicians participated in semi-structured interviews in an attempt to elicit their views and best practices when discharging clients from treatment. Participants worked in a multitude of settings at different levels of care and were asked to evaluate both their individual approaches to discharge planning as well as practices within their agencies. Findings suggest multiple factors contributing to successful discharge plans, though clinicians reported having control over only a fraction of these factors. For …

An Exploratory Analysis Of The Ecological Validity Of A Performance-Based Assessment Of Attention, Eun- Yeop Lee Sep 2009

An Exploratory Analysis Of The Ecological Validity Of A Performance-Based Assessment Of Attention, Eun- Yeop Lee

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Executive functions impact everyday functioning. An individual’s ability to adapt

to and navigate their physical and social environments is largely determined by the ability

to organize oneself, to plan and to coordinate activities. Despite the wide variety of

cognitive tests that assess various aspects of executive function, there has been little work

to validate the use of these measures in predicting real world functioning (Sbordone,

Seyranian, & Ruff, 2000), particularly in children where characterization of executive

function is less specified. Evaluating the ecological validity of neuropsychological tests

has become an increasingly important topic over the past decade (Chaytor & Schmitter- …

Co-Transcriptional Splicing And Functional Role Of Pkcβ In Insulin-Sensitive L6 Skeletal Muscle Cells And 3t3-L1 Adipocytes, Eden Kleiman Sep 2009

Co-Transcriptional Splicing And Functional Role Of Pkcβ In Insulin-Sensitive L6 Skeletal Muscle Cells And 3t3-L1 Adipocytes, Eden Kleiman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

PKC

βII is alternatively spliced during acute insulin stimulation in L6 skeletal

muscle cells. This PKC

βII isoform is critical in propagating GLUT4 translocation.

PKC

β protein and promoter dysfunction correlate with human insulin resistance. TZD

treatment ameliorates whole-body insulin-resistance. Its primary target is adipocyte

PPAR

γ, which it activates upon binding. This causes both altered circulating serum FFA

concentrations and adipokine secretion profile. How TZDs affect the intracellular

signaling of skeletal muscle cells is unknown. RT-PCR and Western blot analysis

showed that TZDs elevated PKC

βII by a process that involves co-transcriptional splicing.

PGC1

α overexpression most closely resembled …

Evaluation Of Web Resources By Preservice Teachers, Paula Storm, Laura Eidietis Sep 2009

Evaluation Of Web Resources By Preservice Teachers, Paula Storm, Laura Eidietis

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning at EMU

Paula Storm and Laura Eidietis have collaborated on a chapter that deals with information literacy and preservice teachers. Eidietis, who teaches classes on biology education for future elementary teachers, became concerned about the poor job her students sometimes did when searching for Internet resources for use in their classes. She combined with Paula Storm, EMU's Science and Technology Librarian, to develop and assess workshops aimed at helping students perform more productive Internet searches on scientific topics. The two authors report here on their study; they demonstrate that the criteria students use in assessing Internet sites are often rather different from …

Using Case Studies And Online Discussions To Educate Future Health Administrators, Pamela Walsh Sep 2009

Using Case Studies And Online Discussions To Educate Future Health Administrators, Pamela Walsh

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning at EMU

Pamela Walsh is a relatively new faculty member at Eastern Michigan University, teaching health administration. This chapter details the adjustments she made in one of her courses, Legal Issues in Health Care, the second time she taught it; the chapter also discusses adjustments Pam plans to make in the future. Pam's work concentrates most heavily on the implementation of case studies and threaded discussions, and the ways in which both of these pedagogical innovations worked and the ways in which they did not live up to their promise.

What Pam has done here is to provide a valuable service for …

Guided Inquiry Animations In General Chemistry, Larry Kolopajlo Sep 2009

Guided Inquiry Animations In General Chemistry, Larry Kolopajlo

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning at EMU

Many people have nightmares about their undergraduate chemistry experiences. I suspect, though, that if Larry Kolopajlo had been our teacher, this would not be the case. Larry's work in this chapter is motivated by his desire to see students achieve mastery in this challenging subject. Larry has developed an impressive collection of computerized animations that, for example, show students the movement of atoms in chemical reactions. By being able to observe what previously had been hidden aspects of the subject, students should be able to gain a deeper understanding of what is going on. This should help the students to …

Exploring The Human Rights Implications Of Microfinance Initiatives, Rebecca Farrer Sep 2009

Exploring The Human Rights Implications Of Microfinance Initiatives, Rebecca Farrer

International Journal of Legal Information

This Article explores Microfinance and microcredit (“MFI”) programs from several perspectives, with particular emphasis on human rights issues. These programs involve making small loans to people who would otherwise be unable to borrow money to facilitate them starting their own businesses: frequently, the programs focus on women borrowers in developing countries. The emphasis of MFI programs on women in developing countries makes it important to consider these programs in terms of both women’s and indigenous rights, while MFI as an approach to poverty merits a discussion of economic rights. Part I of the article will explore the concept and scope …
