“A Space For Myself To Go:” Early Patterns In Small Ya Spaces, Anthony Bernier

Faculty Publications

While young adults (teenagers) are routinely recognized as constituting nearly 25 percent of the nation's public library users, the vast majority of libraries devote more space and design attention to restrooms than to young people. Worse, there are currently no consistent or established metrics, no evaluation criteria, few conceptual standards of best practices, and little consistency in the methods by which we collect empirical evidence about young adult (YA) spaces. This study is the first systematic attempt to both collect and analyze empirical data on libraries' recent trend toward providing greater spatial equity for YA library service.

Funny Money: How Federal Education Funding Hurts Poor And Minority Students, Cassandra Jones Havard

All Faculty Scholarship

Neither race nor class alone can predict educational achievement. However, in America, disparities in funding for education may be an impediment to educational opportunity for disadvantaged youth. At the crux of the Nation's achievement gap among minority children is the question of the how states should allocate federal education funds, and how local school districts should use those monies. Educators have long recognized that the socioeconomic circumstances of many public school students present great educational challenges. Since 1965, Congress has authorized the use of federal funds by local school districts to remedy the achievement gap.

Stop The Killing: Potential Courtroom Use Of A Questionnaire That Predicts The Likelihood That A Victim Of Intimate Partner Violence Will Be Murdered By Her Partner, Amanda Hitt, Lynn Mclain Oct 2009

Stop The Killing: Potential Courtroom Use Of A Questionnaire That Predicts The Likelihood That A Victim Of Intimate Partner Violence Will Be Murdered By Her Partner, Amanda Hitt, Lynn Mclain

All Faculty Scholarship

Judges in domestic cases often underestimate the risk to a mother and her children that an angry and abusive father or other intimate partner poses. In a recent Maryland case, for example, two judges refused to deny a father visitation or require that visitation be supervised, despite the fact that the father had threatened suicide. During the father’s unsupervised visitation, he drowned all three of his children, then attempted to kill himself.

The Danger Assessment tool (the D.A.) developed by a Johns Hopkins Nursing professor and validated by herself and other social scientists shows how much the father’s thoughts of …

The World Bank has been providing assistance to developing countries since it was established in 1945. The Bank is the largest provider of both intellectual and financial aid to developing countries. What makes it more distinguishable is that, unlike episodic involvement of the IMF, which comes in on for a period of a year or two to help the ailing economies, World Bank is a long-term development partner of the developing countries.

The Attractors Of Teaching Biology: A Perspective From A Turkish Context, Ahmet Kilinc, Ahmet Mahiroglu Oct 2009

The Attractors Of Teaching Biology: A Perspective From A Turkish Context, Ahmet Kilinc, Ahmet Mahiroglu

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Because the teaching occupation plays a crucial role in a country’s development, policymakers and teacher recruitment units all around the world strive to understand how to attract individuals to this profession. However, research regarding the attractors of teaching has been conducted almost entirely in developed countries and has not focused on particular subject areas to be taught. In addition, only limited lists of attractors have been used. Accordingly, the main purpose of this study was to examine what attractors influence people who choose teaching biology as a career, and what about the Turkish culture has caused people to make this …

E-Portfolios As A Pedagogical Device In Primary Teacher Education: The Aut University Experience, Marguerite Maher, Philippa Gerbic Oct 2009

E-Portfolios As A Pedagogical Device In Primary Teacher Education: The Aut University Experience, Marguerite Maher, Philippa Gerbic

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Portfolios have a long tradition in teacher education and now these are available in electronic form. At the same time, there are increasing demands for primary teachers to be technologically capable and confident in classrooms. When teacher educators wish to respond through the introduction of new technologies such as e-portfolios, there are significant issues of professional learning. This paper discusses one response, a collaborative self-study, around the introduction of an e-portfolio as a pedagogical device. It highlights two key aspects of the study: first, it considers how collaborative self-study as a methodology proved crucial for sustaining lecturer motivation and commitment …

How Can Preservice Teachers Be Measured Against Advocated Professional Teaching Standards?, Peter Hudson Oct 2009

How Can Preservice Teachers Be Measured Against Advocated Professional Teaching Standards?, Peter Hudson

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Australia has had many inquiries into teaching and teacher education over the last decade. Standards for teaching have been produced by national education systems with many state systems following suit. The Queensland College of Teachers (QCT) advocates ten professional teaching standards for teachers and preservice teachers. How can preservice teachers be measured against advocated professional standards? This study investigated 106 second-year preservice teachers’ perceptions of their development against the QCT standards. A pretest-posttest survey instrument was developed based on the QCT standards and administered to these preservice teachers before and after their science education coursework. Percentages, ANOVAs and t-tests were …

Demythologizing Phosita - Applying The Non-Obviousness Requirement Under Canadian Patent Law To Keep Knowledge In The Public Domain And Foster Innovation, Matthew Herder

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

The Supreme Court of Canada recently revised the doctrine of non-obviousness in a pharmaceutical "selection patent" case, Apotex Inc. v. Sanofi-Synthelabo Canada Inc. Although the Court was cognizant of changes to the same doctrine in the United States and the United Kingdom, a critical flaw in how the doctrine is being applied in Canada escaped its attention. Using content analysis methodology, this article shows that Canadian courts frequently fail to characterize the "person having ordinary skill in the art" (PHOSITA) for the purpose of the obviousness inquiry. The article argues that this surprisingly common analytical mistake betrays a deep misunderstanding …

The Origin Of The Curvilinear Plan-Form In Irish Ecclesiastical Sites: A Comparative Analysis Of Sites In Ireland, Wales And France, Clare Crowley Oct 2009

The Origin Of The Curvilinear Plan-Form In Irish Ecclesiastical Sites: A Comparative Analysis Of Sites In Ireland, Wales And France, Clare Crowley

Doctoral

This thesis looks at the origins of the curvilinear plan-form in ecclesiastical sites in Ireland, through the detailed examination and comparative analysis of a selection of field study sites in Ireland, Wales and France. It asks the fundamental question: is the concept of the curvilinear plan-form in Ireland home-grown or an import? Curvilinear ecclesiastical settlements that appeared to be originating in the Early Medieval period in Ireland, conform to what looks like a universal pattern. The characteristics of this pattern commonly include an inner and outer curvilinear enclosure, with a church, burial ground and other ecclesiastical structures and features (for …
