Opinions Of Female Juvenile Delinquents On Language-Based Literacy Activities, Dixie Sanger, Mitzi Ritzman, Aliza Stremlau, Lindsey Fairchild, Cindy Brunken
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
A mixed methods study was conducted to examine female juvenile delinquents' opinions and reactions on nine language-based literacy activities. Forty-one participants ranging in age from 13 to 18 years responded to a survey consisting of nine multiple-choice items and one open-ended question concerning the use- fulness of activities. Quantitative and qualitative findings revealed the majority of participants found the activities to be very useful. From 410 comments, five key themes emerged on positive opinions about usefulness, personal examples of use, negative opinions about usefulness, metacognitive and self regulation skills, and predictions of usefulness with future students. Examples of all activi- …
Book Review: Genetic Glass Ceilings: Transgenics For Crop Diversity By Jonathan Gressel, George Acquaah
Book Review: Genetic Glass Ceilings: Transgenics For Crop Diversity By Jonathan Gressel, George Acquaah
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
In what is destined to become a classic, Jonathan Grassel’s Genetic Glass Ceiling: Transgenics for Crop Diversity is a carefully crafted book that is firmly rooted in science, engaging and thought-provoking, very bold in its assertions, and yet not overly alarming. Throughout, its author challenges his readers to think outside the box. Cognizant of the fact that genetic engineering as a tool in the plant breeder’s toolkit has its ardent proponents as well as detractors, Grassel, who obviously belongs to the former camp, devotes the first nine chapters to a thorough review of the science, showing how plant breeders are …

Book Review: Remaking The North American Food System: Strategies For Sustainability Edited By C. Clare Hinrichs And Thomas A. Lyson, Patricia Allen
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Today’s food system is in need of remaking, to be sure. There is a sense that we have lost our way, as food-related health problems, environmental destruction, and food insecurity call into question the very premises of our contemporary food system. Remaking the North American Food System provides an excellent inventory and assessment of the ways in which people are working to solve these problems in different places and within different modalities. It draws on the vast experience of a number of the key experts in the world of alternative food systems, many of whom are pioneers in the field. …
Book Review: The Guide To Kansas Birds And Birding Hot Spots By Bob Gress And Pete Janzen, William E. Jensen
Book Review: The Guide To Kansas Birds And Birding Hot Spots By Bob Gress And Pete Janzen, William E. Jensen
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Some newcomers to—or even long-time residents of—Kansas (or the Great Plains in general) need an inspirational introduction to the wonderful natural history offered by midcontinental North America. The Guide to Kansas Birds and Birding Hot Spots by Bob Gress and Pete Janzen accomplishes such an introduction. Though photographic bird guides have their limitations in illustrating plumage variation, the outstanding color photographs by Gress are exceptionally sharp, colorful, and do well in depicting field marks with frame-filling views of each species profiled. The photos are vast improvements over any preceding bird guide specific to Kansas (e.g., Thompson and Ely, Birds in …
Book Review: Wildlife Science: Linking Ecological Theory And Management Applications Edited By Timothy E. Fulbright And David G. Hewitt, Craig R. Allen
Book Review: Wildlife Science: Linking Ecological Theory And Management Applications Edited By Timothy E. Fulbright And David G. Hewitt, Craig R. Allen
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Wildlife Science stems from the 25th Anniversary Symposium of the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute in April 2006, the topic of which furnishes the book with its full title. The symposium’s organizers celebrated the occasion by inviting “a group of the best and brightest minds in wildlife science” to participate. The edited volume, with 38 authors contributing to a total of 20 chapters, is weighted towards Texas (23 of its authors are from the state), although there are examples from the rest of the U.S. and the world.
The book is organized into five parts: “Birds,” “Mammals,” “Habitat,” “Animal Health …
Predicting Lesser Scaup Wetland Use During Spring Migration In Eastern South Dakota, Sharon N. Kahara, Steven R. Chipps
Predicting Lesser Scaup Wetland Use During Spring Migration In Eastern South Dakota, Sharon N. Kahara, Steven R. Chipps
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
The relative influence of physical, chemical, and biotic wetland characteristics on wetland use by spring migrating lesser scaup (Aythya affinis [Eyton]; hereafter “scaup”) is not well understood. We compared characteristics of used and unused wetlands in eastern South Dakota. Used wetlands were larger (>2 ha; P = 0.05), with higher amphipod densities (>500 individuals m-2; P = 0.01) and higher chlorophyll-a concentrations (>0.2; P < 0.05). These wetlands had lower ionic conductivity (1.8 mS; P = 0.02), lower nitrates (1.0 ppm; P = 0.01), lower submerged aquatic vegetation density (P < 0.01), and lower fine sediment proportions (≤150 μm grain size; P < 0.01). Wetland use was best described by amphipod and submerged aquatic vegetation densities. The predictive model explained 50.4% of the variation in scaup use in a reserve dataset. Thresholds of tolerance by amphipods in relation to wetland habitats in the upper Midwest should be investigated further as indicators of a broader range of water and habitat quality characteristics for scaup.

Book Review: Plains Apache Ethnobotany, Aaron M. Lampman
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Prior to resettlement and assimilation, Plains Apaches had sophisticated knowledge of the plants that sustained their way of life in the Great Plains. This book by Julia A. Jordan is the only extensive work that documents Plains Apache ethnobotanical knowledge. Jordan’s research relies on interviews with six elders who experienced traditional plant use during a time of cultural transition from the 1890s to the 1960s. The book is divided into two parts, with the first part focused on methods, history, and plant conceptualization, the second on plant names, descriptions, and cultural use. The data collected from these elders represent an …
Redefining The Dust Bowl Region Via Popular Perception And Geotechnology, Jess C. Porter, G. Allen Finchum
Redefining The Dust Bowl Region Via Popular Perception And Geotechnology, Jess C. Porter, G. Allen Finchum
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
The Dust Bowl is a historical vernacular region that has been delimited by a diverse group of academics, literary authors, and popular cultural voices. However, the general public’s perception of the Dust Bowl region has not been mapped and analyzed. This research queried residents of 93 Great Plains counties in order to ascertain their perceptions and knowledge of the vernacular Dust Bowl region. Analysis of the responses via the application of geographic information system mapping reveals striking differences between respondents of varying age and place of residence. Findings suggest that spatial understanding of the Dust Bowl phenomena is eroding among …
A Defense Of Embryonic Stem Cell Research, Gregory Dolin
A Defense Of Embryonic Stem Cell Research, Gregory Dolin
All Faculty Scholarship
On November 21, 2007, sensational scientific developments were reported by major newspapers, both in the United States and abroad. The media reported a new breakthrough in the area of stem cell research. According to two articles published in Science and Cell (both highly respected scientific journals), two teams of scientists were able to “reprogram” adult stem cells into embryonic stem cells, without actually having to experiment on embryos. The discovery was immediately hailed by the White House and other opponents of embryonic stem cell research. The New York Times gushed that the “stem cell wars” may be at an end. …
Thermal Modeling Of Lithium-Ion Energy Storage Systems For Hybrid Electric Vehicles Using Computational Fluid Dynamics With Conjugate Heat Transfer, Craig R. Czlapinski
Thermal Modeling Of Lithium-Ion Energy Storage Systems For Hybrid Electric Vehicles Using Computational Fluid Dynamics With Conjugate Heat Transfer, Craig R. Czlapinski
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
The success and performance of a Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) relies largely on its Energy Storage System (ESS). High temperatures and thermal variations can significantly affect a battery's performance and lifecycle. An effective thermal management system is vital to the health and safe operation of the ESS's batteries. A well designed thermal management system begins with the accurate prediction of the battery's thermal conditions. In hot climates, HEVs may be required to operate within ten degrees Celsius of the maximum safe operating temperature of their batteries. This study aims to evaluate the thermal management system of a lithium-ion based energy …

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
The FDA employs an average-patient standard when reviewing drugs: it approves a drug only if the average patient (in clinical trials) does better on the drug than on control. It is common, however, for different patients to respond differently to a drug. Therefore, the average-patient standard can result in approval of a drug with significant negative effects for certain patient subgroups (false positives) and disapproval of drugs with significant positive effects for other patient subgroups (false negatives). Drug companies have a financial incentive to avoid false negatives. After their clinical trials reveal that their drug does not benefit the average …

Understanding Human Trafficking: Development Of Typologies Of Traffickers Phase Ii, Noël Busch-Armendariz, Maura Nsonwu, Laurie Cook Heffron
Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Human Trafficking: 1st (2009)
Perpetrator typologies have been useful in understanding other crimes, such as do-mestic violence, and serve a similar purpose in enhancing our knowledge base about human trafficking. Typologies of human traffickers can be useful in improving our understanding about elements needed for successful investigations and prosecu-tions; developing appropriate services for victims and survivors; preventing human trafficking; and increasing community awareness.
The goal of this project is to explore the types of traffickers based on key characteris-tics found in the literature and in prosecuted cases. The initial two phases of this re-search, reported here, involve a review of literature, government reports, and …
Sex Trafficking Needs Assessment For The State Of Minnesota, Mary C. Ellison
Sex Trafficking Needs Assessment For The State Of Minnesota, Mary C. Ellison
Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Human Trafficking: 1st (2009)
Sex trafficking is a form of slavery and involuntary servitude resulting in grave human rights violations. Minnesota was a place of origin, transit, and destination for sex trafficking operations even before federal or state law defined the crime of “sex trafficking.” In September 2008, The Advocates for Human Rights published the Sex Trafficking Needs Assessment Report at the request of the State of Minnesota Human Trafficking Task Force. The Report focuses on trafficking of persons for commercial sexual exploitation or prostitution as defined in federal law and Minnesota law. The qualitative research conducted by The Advocates compliments data by the …

Which Comes First, The Smuggling Or The Trafficking?, Linda Brandmiller, Elizabeth Crooks
Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Human Trafficking: 1st (2009)
The Immigration Services Department of Catholic Charities Archdiocese of San Antonio, Inc., is seeing more and more women which we believe are by definition statutorily eligible to be considered “trafficking” victims but who are nevertheless being denied certification and are therefore falling through the cracks of the immigration system.
One of our clients, discovered in the trunk of a car by immigration officials after enduring three months of being beaten, raped, starved and sold for sex, cannot get certified for trafficking- because the perpetrators were only charged with “smuggling”. Another who was purchased by a couple to be their sex …
Estimating The Extent Of Out-Migration Human Trafficking In Ukraine, Ron Hampton, Dwayne Ball, Julie Pennington, Anh Nguyen
Estimating The Extent Of Out-Migration Human Trafficking In Ukraine, Ron Hampton, Dwayne Ball, Julie Pennington, Anh Nguyen
Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Human Trafficking: 1st (2009)
The problem of estimating the true extent of human trafficking has yet to be well-solved. The study we will report used three estimation methods to estimate the number of persons trafficked out of the Ukraine. One was a small (N~1300) survey of randomly-selected families, another was a large (N~13,000) survey of households, and a third was a survey of key neighborhood informants. The three methods, while varying in questionnaire wording, sampling frame, and other methodological considerations, converged roughly on an estimate of the number of persons trafficked out of the Ukraine. The estimated number was much higher than statistics from …
Religious Conviction And Human Trafficking: Motive Matters, Nathan Adams, Julia Bingman, Jared Littleton, Jeremy Scott
Religious Conviction And Human Trafficking: Motive Matters, Nathan Adams, Julia Bingman, Jared Littleton, Jeremy Scott
Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Human Trafficking: 1st (2009)
Individuals and groups acting primarily out of a sense of religious conviction form the backbone of a great deal of anti-human trafficking work being done today. Religious groups of many differing faiths have undertaken various projects both to free victims and to provide services to survivors. Funding and resources for these projects typically come from appeals to congregations, temples, and individuals using imagery and illusions to shared religious practice. This paper aims to analyze how these convictions affect the stated and practiced goals of religiously based groups, focusing on how such convictions and foci manifest in: gender issues, religious diversity, …

Ageing And Cancer As Diseases Of Epigenesis, Scott F. Gilbert
Ageing And Cancer As Diseases Of Epigenesis, Scott F. Gilbert
Biology Faculty Works
Cancer and ageing are often said to be diseases of development. During the past fifty years, the genetic components of cancer and ageing have been intensely investigated since development, itself, was seen to be an epiphenomenon of the genome. However, as we have learned more about the expression of the genome, we find that differences in expression can be as important as differences in alleles. It is easier to inactivate a gene by methylation than by mutation, and given that appropriate methylation is essential for normal development, one can immediately see that diseases would result as a consequence of inappropriate …
