Christian Missions And Colonial Empires Reconsidered: A Black Evangelist In West Africa, 1766-1816, Edward E. Andrews Oct 2009

Christian Missions And Colonial Empires Reconsidered: A Black Evangelist In West Africa, 1766-1816, Edward E. Andrews

History & Classics Faculty Publications

The article presents an exploration into the work of the late 18th-century West African Anglican missionary Philip Quaque and the relationship between imperialism and religion during the colonial era. The author points out and criticizes the dominant historiographical trend of over-conflating White imperialism with Christian missions. Quaque's life and writings are examined, highlighting the lack of forced cultural conversion within his missionary activities. Discussion is also given regarding the complex identity dynamics within Quaque as a Christian and as an African.

Looking Back: Letters Of Persuasion: Posturing For A Carnegie Library In Middlesboro, Jonathan Jeffrey

SCL Faculty and Staff Publications

When making application for a Carnegie Library grant, proponents added letters of support. These letters often described their communities in great detail, providing information about the city's population, the area' cultural and educational institutions, and the dynamics of local government. Writers took this work quite seriously, and some eloquently requested that the "King of Steel" provide funding for a library in their community. This article presents information about the letter writing campaign from Middlesboro, Kentucky, a small town in the southeastern portion of the Commonwealth. It also includes five letters sent to Carnegie from Middlesboro citizens along with biographies of …

Treatment Policies & Programs For Mentally Ill Offenders: A Comparison Of Kentucky And The Nation, Irina Soderstrom, Shenna Smith Oct 2009

Treatment Policies & Programs For Mentally Ill Offenders: A Comparison Of Kentucky And The Nation, Irina Soderstrom, Shenna Smith

Kentucky Justice and Safety Research Bulletin

Approximately 10-15% of the nearly 6 million offenders in U.S. jails, prisons or on probation or parole, suffer from mental illness. Correctional systems are legally mandated to provide treatment, yet they are overwhelmed with the high costs associated with specialized staff training, the hiring of professional mental health providers, psychotropic medications and specialized housing.
This article discusses the prevalence of the problem of the continually increasing numbers of offenders in need of mental health services. The article also presents the results of a national survey of the chief mental health administrators for the state correctional systems across the United States. …

Material Properties Are Related To Stress Fracture Callus And Porosity Of Cortical Bone Tissue At Affected And Unaffected Sites, Rachel C. Entwistle,, Sara C. Sammons, Robert F. Bigley, Scott J. Hazelwood, David P. Fyhrie, Jeffery C. Gibeling, Susan M. Stover Oct 2009

Material Properties Are Related To Stress Fracture Callus And Porosity Of Cortical Bone Tissue At Affected And Unaffected Sites, Rachel C. Entwistle,, Sara C. Sammons, Robert F. Bigley, Scott J. Hazelwood, David P. Fyhrie, Jeffery C. Gibeling, Susan M. Stover

Biomedical Engineering

Stress fractures are overuse injuries of bone that affect elite athletes and military recruits. One response of cortical bone to stress fracture is to lay down periosteal callus. The objectives of this study were to determine if material properties are different among bones with different stages of stress fracture callus, at both a callus site and at a distal site. Cortical specimens were mechanically tested to determine their stress–strain response. Material property differences were examined using nonparametric and regression analyses. At the callus site, material properties were low during the earliest stages of callus, higher with increasing callus maturity, but …

Dipl 6806 Political Economy Of Latin America And The Caribbean, Benjamin Goldfrank Phd

Diplomacy Syllabi

This seminar provides an overview of major approaches to the study of political economy in Latin America, past and present development trends, and recent debates over economic policy. The course begins with classic questions of the mutual reciprocal relations between politics and economics before covering the major debates between structural and institutional approaches. It proceeds by examining the switch from import-substituting industrialization to export-led growth models in the 1980s and 1990s as well as the effects of and reactions to the rise of neoliberal economic policies. The last several weeks examine new reform efforts in industry, agriculture, finance, and administration …

Anatomy Of Public Health Research: Tobacco Control As A Case Study, Michael L. Marlow Oct 2009

Anatomy Of Public Health Research: Tobacco Control As A Case Study, Michael L. Marlow

Economics

Tobacco is unhealthy, and apparently it is not hard to convince people that government programs are somehow not only effective but necessary to reduce smoking. Early efforts were successful because they focused on raising prices through tax hikes. Then smoking bans became the focus. Bans have so far been imposed on restaurants and bars in 27 states and Washington, D.C., and it is argued that they will change social norms in ways that lower smoking. Spending programs represent a more recent strategy, and these are the focus of this commentary. State governments fund antismoking advertisements that run in newspapers and …

Island Hopping As A Mode Of Acculturation: The Experience Of German Sojourners In The American Southwest, Tatjana K. Rosev

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

This study explores how members of a particular group of German sojourners—military and quasi-military personnel and their families—whose acculturative experience occurs largely within the closely-bounded confines of a military base, adjust to life in the American Southwest. I use a mixed-methods approach, including grounded theory, to interpret data produced by short questionnaires, in-depth interviews with eleven German participants, and my personal experience as a German sojourner.

Stand By Me: A Study Of Activity Budgets, Nearest Neighbor, Social Behavior, And Home Range Of The Olive Baboons (Papio Anubis) Of Ndarakwai Ranch, Katie Conway Oct 2009

Stand By Me: A Study Of Activity Budgets, Nearest Neighbor, Social Behavior, And Home Range Of The Olive Baboons (Papio Anubis) Of Ndarakwai Ranch, Katie Conway

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Baboons are highly social primates that live in complex societies. This study attempted to reveal which individuals are engaging in what social behaviors, and with whom. Two troops of olive baboons (Papio anubis) were followed at Ndarakwai Private Reserve in Northern Tanzania for 19 days from November 7 to November 26, 2009 to analyze what factors influence time budgets and social behaviors, as well as to create a home range map for each troop. Troops were seen to intermingle in the ranch, covering a large area of many habitats. Time of day, habitat, weather, troop member, and age class were …

“We Didn’T Choose To Live In A Transition Society:” The Youth Of Milošević’S Serbia Ten Years Later, Jessica Tsunami Acosta

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The 1990’s were an extremely dark time in modern Serbian history, mired by wars, sanctions, dictatorship, and struggle. Those who came of age in that time find their entire lives to be defined by their country’s transition process. Because of this experience, these individuals are in a unique position to make connections between past conflicts and present challenges in Serbia. In particular, through understanding their narratives of this recent past and their perceptions of Serbia’s current progress in its transition phase, one can glean a better picture of this generation and what it holds for Serbia’s future. In allowing these …

Opacity: A Socioeconomic Study Of Diamond Mining In South-Eastern Cameroon, Steven Fox Oct 2009

Opacity: A Socioeconomic Study Of Diamond Mining In South-Eastern Cameroon, Steven Fox

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Diamond mining in the southeastern Cameroon is on the cusp of a boom of development. Artisanal diamond miners served as the “beacon” for an industrial mining company, C&K, to explore and attempt to gain permission to commence exploitation. There are massive social, economic and environmental implications depending on the execution of exploitation. It is the role of the government bodies and the corporation to identify sustainable methods to develop this untapped natural resource and the surrounding infrastructure. The region is an isolated throwback; its basic functions are, in essence, dated four decades. They need improved simple infrastructure, although the local …

Perceptions Of Microfinance In Cameroon: A Case Study Of Unics, Yaoundé, Ian Long Oct 2009

Perceptions Of Microfinance In Cameroon: A Case Study Of Unics, Yaoundé, Ian Long

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The subject of this project is the common perceptions that exist towards microfinance in Cameroon within the community of those who work with or are influenced in some way by microfinance institutions. Furthermore, the project focuses on the ways in which these perceptions affect the institutions, the actions of the institutions amidst and in response to these perceptions, and to what extent these actions have a positive effect on the community and the firms themselves. I also examine to a certain degree the relationship between the two main goals of category two and category three microfinance firms: specifically, the fulfillment …

How To Build A Health Clinic: Disease Burden, Health Seeking Behavior And Clinic Structures In The Kibera Slums, Samuel Mcgowan Oct 2009

How To Build A Health Clinic: Disease Burden, Health Seeking Behavior And Clinic Structures In The Kibera Slums, Samuel Mcgowan

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This study seeks to determine a model for a health clinic to be run by the Kibera School for Girls in the Katwekera village of Nairobi’s Kibera slums. The study examines the disease burden of the school’s initial target population, the health-seeking behavior of the community, and current clinic structures in Kibera. Using these methodological tactics, the study suggests the Kibera School for Girls should start a small, locally-run clinic that offers basic primary health care to a target population of about 5,000 Kibera residents.

Train Hard, Win Easy: Running On The Periphery In Rural Kenya: The Last Shall Be First, Jordan Apfeld Oct 2009

Train Hard, Win Easy: Running On The Periphery In Rural Kenya: The Last Shall Be First, Jordan Apfeld

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Past years have proven Kenyans dominant in the sport of athletics. Today, runners from the Rift Valley win more major middle- and long-distance running events than those from any other nation in the world. Although athletics is not the most lucrative of sports, modern marketing has resulted in creating a sport with various financial incentives. These include prize money, sponsorships, and the opportunity for a new life. However, runners from rural agricultural backgrounds find it very difficult to translate their athletic talent into dollars at the finish line. This study examines the economic prospects for young male runners from Kapsabet …

Political Capital And The Project Planning Process: An Action Research Exercise Of The Shirazi Community Health Clinic Project, Lindsay Beebe

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This paper assess the political capital of the rural Kenyan coast village of Shirazi in the context of the project planning process, using the subjective well-being paradigm of development to guide the research parameters. Household surveys were conducted to provide a baseline of information about village demographics, political efficacy, and measure subjective well-being. The surveys found that Shirazi village, although disadvantaged by limited access to economic markets and financial capital, has a wealth of political capital. The results of the survey, supported by an observation of and participation in the village’s political processes, indicate that Shirazi village will be a …
