The Importance Of Exercise And Dimension Factors In Assessment Centers: Simultaneous Examinations Of Construct-Related And Criterion-Related Validity, Filip Lievens, Stephan Dilchert, Deniz S. Ones Jan 2009

The Importance Of Exercise And Dimension Factors In Assessment Centers: Simultaneous Examinations Of Construct-Related And Criterion-Related Validity, Filip Lievens, Stephan Dilchert, Deniz S. Ones

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study presents a simultaneous examination of multiple evidential bases of the validity of assessment center (AC) ratings. In particular, we combine both construct-related and criterion-related validation strategies in the same sample to determine the relative importance of exercises and dimensions. We examine the underlying structure of ACs in terms of exercise and dimension factors while directly linking these factors to a work-related criterion (salary). Results from an AC (N = 753) showed that exercise factors not only explained more variance in AC ratings than dimension factors but also were more important in predicting salary. Dimension factors explained a smaller …

Using Transformative Learning Theory To Enhance Professional Development, Susan M. Cahill, Michelle Bulanda Jan 2009

Using Transformative Learning Theory To Enhance Professional Development, Susan M. Cahill, Michelle Bulanda

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: Pediatric occupational therapy and physical therapy interventions for children with disabilities are designed to increase function and often focus on developmental skills instead of on the environmental context and promoting self-determination skills. A professional development course was developed to help therapists develop intervention strategies to meet developmental outcomes, while also promoting children's self-determination and creating opportunities for children to authentically participating in daily routines, including leisure and community play. Transformative learning theory was used as a basis to develop this course. The purpose of this article is to report on course activities and the assessment of participants' "transformation" at …

A Health Care Education And Promotion Challenge: Hpv Vaccination, Mattie Davis-Wolfe, Nathalie Garbani, Sylvia Hay-Thompson, Susan Mayer, Carol Spencer Roane

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

In 2008, approximately 11,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with cervical cancer and more than 3,800 American women will die of this disease. The recent approval by the Food and Drug Administration of a human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine that is over 90% effective in preventing new infections and precancerous cervical lesions caused by the HPV types that cause cervical cancer may possibly reduce the incidence of cervical cancer. However, a number of unresolved issues exist regarding this vaccine. This paper will explore considerations and challenges facing healthcare educators regarding the HPV vaccine in the following areas: (a) …

Age And Lateral Sleep Position: A Pilot Study, Susan Gordon, Petra G. Buettner Jan 2009

Age And Lateral Sleep Position: A Pilot Study, Susan Gordon, Petra G. Buettner

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: Previous research, undertaken using a Super 8 camera and non-continuous data, has reported that with increasing age, people are more likely to sleep in the right lateral position. It has been postulated that this is due to age related alterations in cardiovascular function. This pilot study was undertaken to determine if collection and analysis of continuous sleep data was a feasible method for further investigation of this topic and to determine the sample size required for an adequately powered study. Increased understanding of age related changes in sleep position may provide valuable information to improve sleep quality and nursing …

Ecosystem Services In Decision Making: Time To Deliver, James Salzman, Gretchen C. Daily, Stephen Polasky, Joshua Goldstein, Peter M. Kareiva, Harold A. Mooney, Liba Pejchar, Taylor H. Ricketts, Robert Shallenberger Jan 2009

Ecosystem Services In Decision Making: Time To Deliver, James Salzman, Gretchen C. Daily, Stephen Polasky, Joshua Goldstein, Peter M. Kareiva, Harold A. Mooney, Liba Pejchar, Taylor H. Ricketts, Robert Shallenberger

Faculty Scholarship

Over the past decade, efforts to value and protect ecosystem services have been promoted by many as the last, best hope for making conservation mainstream – attractive and commonplace worldwide. In theory, if we can help individuals and institutions to recognize the value of nature, then this should greatly increase investments in conservation, while at the same time fostering human well-being. In practice, however, we have not yet developed the scientific basis, nor the policy and finance mechanisms, for incorporating natural capital into resource- and land-use decisions on a large scale. Here, we propose a conceptual framework and sketch out …

The Deterrent Effect Of Death Penalty Eligibility: Evidence From The Adoption Of Child Murder Eligibility Factors, Michael D. Frakes, Matthew Harding Jan 2009

The Deterrent Effect Of Death Penalty Eligibility: Evidence From The Adoption Of Child Murder Eligibility Factors, Michael D. Frakes, Matthew Harding

Faculty Scholarship

We draw on within-state variations in the reach of capital punishment statutes between 1977 and 2004 to identify the deterrent effects associated with capital eligibility. Focusing on the most prevalent eligibility expansion, we estimate that the adoption of a child murder factor is associated with an approximately 20% reduction in the homicide rate of youth victims. Eligibility expansions may enhance deterrence by (1) paving the way for more executions and (2) providing prosecutors with greater leverage to secure enhanced non-capital sentences. While executions themselves are rare, this latter channel is likely to be triggered fairly regularly, providing a reasonable basis …

Living In Interesting Times: President Obama And The Rebirth Of The Labor Movement, Daniel S. Bowling Iii

Legislation has been introduced in the United States that will allow workers to form unions without secret ballot voting among prospective members. This legislation, in its current form, is the most radical change in Federal law governing union recognition in its history. While passage of the legislation is far from certain, it has generated much discussion and argument, most of it polemical. This article examines the issue from a more academic perspective, reviewing the history of organizing and how management practices have developed that effectively use the current election process as a tool to resist organizing efforts, and the effect …

Europeanization As A Process: Thoughts On The Europeanization Of Private Law, Christian Joerges

Faculty Scholarship

Professor Christian Joerges delivered the Second Annual Herbert L. Bernstein Memorial Lecture in Comparative Law in 2003 and this article is based on his remarks. The article is included in the inaugural volume of CICLOPs that collects the first six Bernstein lectures. Professor Joerges puts forth a three part thesis concerning the “Europeanization of Private Law”, the process by which the European Community influences the legal and political policies of its member states within a framework of transnational cooperation. Joerges first establishes the eroding importance of the idea that legal systems operating at the national level fulfill the goals of …

Institutional Challenges For Mining And Sustainability In Peru, Anthony J. Bebbington, Jeffrey T. Bury Jan 2009

Institutional Challenges For Mining And Sustainability In Peru, Anthony J. Bebbington, Jeffrey T. Bury

Geography

Global consumption continues to generate growth in mining. In lesser developed economies, this growth offers the potential to generate new resources for development, but also creates challenges to sustainability in the regions in which extraction occurs. This context leads to debate on the institutional arrangements most likely to build synergies between mining, livelihoods, and development, and on the socio-political conditions under which such institutions can emerge. Building from a multiyear, three-country program of research projects, Peru, a global center of mining expansion, serves as an exemplar for analyzing the effects of extractive industry on livelihoods and the conditions under which …

The rapid onset of massive, systemic viral replication during primary HIV or simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) infection and the immune evasion capabilities of these viruses pose fundamental problems for vaccines that depend upon initial viral replication to stimulate effector T cell expansion and differentiation. We hypothesized that vaccines designed to maintain differentiated effector memory T cell (TEM cell) responses at viral entry sites might improve efficacy by impairing viral replication at its earliest stage, and we have therefore developed SIV protein-encoding vectors based on rhesus cytomegalovirus (RhCMV), the prototypical inducer of life-long TEM cell responses. RhCMV vectors expressing SIV Gag, …

Farm Productivity And Efficiency In Rural Bangladesh: The Role Of Education Revisited, Mn Asadullah, S Rahman

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

This article reassesses the debate over the role of education in farm production in Bangladesh using a large dataset on rice producing households from 141 villages. Average and stochastic production frontier functions are estimated to ascertain the effect of education on productivity and efficiency. A full set of proxies for farm education stock variables are incorporated to investigate the 'internal' as well as 'external' returns to education. The external effect is investigated in the context of rural neighbourhoods. Our analysis reveals that in addition to raising rice productivity and boosting potential output, household education significantly reduces production inefficiencies. However, we …

A National Survey Investigating Uk Prescribers' Opinions On Chemotherapy Dosing And 'Dose-Banding'., Sa Kaestner, Gj Sewell

School of Health Professions

AIMS: The primary purpose of dose-banding for cancer chemotherapy is to reduce patient waiting times, but dose-banding also has additional benefits, such as reduced drug wastage, reduced stress for staff, and prospective quality control of infusions. However, the uptake of dose-banding seems fairly low. Possible reasons for this are a reluctance to use dose-banding for clinical reasons or a lack of awareness. Despite the seemingly minor change from established practice of dose preparation, dose-banding has the potential to alter patient chemotherapy exposure. The aim of this study was to investigate prescribers' awareness of dose-banding and their opinions on the scope …

A Transformational Model Of Legal-Claiming, B. M. Goldman, Elizabeth Layne Paddock, R. Cropanzano Jan 2009

A Transformational Model Of Legal-Claiming, B. M. Goldman, Elizabeth Layne Paddock, R. Cropanzano

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper proposes a model of legal-claiming based on the transformational approach to disputes detailed by Felstiner et al. The model suggest disputes evolve, with a number of areas of organizational behavior providing explanations for individual disputant actions at specific points in time, including self-categorization theory, attribution theory, social accounts, organizational justice, conflict escalation, and social information processing. Multiple propositions relating to legal-claiming were also developed that were inductively derived from in-depth interviews with 38 employees who filed employment-discrimination claims with the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Propositions focus on various stages of the dispute, including naming, blaming, claiming, and …

Business Schools And Management Research: A Uk Perspective, Howard Thomas

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In recent years, the role and value of management research is being increasingly challenged because of the perceived imbalance between its rigour and relevance. The purpose of this paper is to review the progress of management research in the UK and focuses particularly on the need for sensible evaluation of the impact of management research. The paper outlines the research challenges faced by business schools from a UK perspective. It draws upon the author's experiences and the results of an analytic study of Economic and Social Research Council-sponsored research undertaken by the author in 2008. There is a perception that …
