Relating Fractal Dimension To Branching Behaviour In Filamentous Microorganisms, David Barry, Onwuarolu Ifeyinwa, Shauna Mcgee, Raymond Ryan, Gwilym Williams, Jonathan Blackledge

Articles

The productivity of an industrial fermentation process involving a filamentous microbe is heavily dependent on the morphological form adopted by the organism. The development of systems capable of rapidly and accurately characterising morphology within a given process represents a significant challenge to biotechnologists, as the complex phenotypes that are manifested are often not easily quantified. Conventional parameters employed in these analyses are of limited value, as they reveal little about the specific branching behaviour of the organism, which is an important consideration given the demonstrated link between branching frequency and metabolite production. More recently, fractal geometry has been employed in …

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Question: Can lichen communities be used to assess shortand long-term factors affecting seral quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) communities at the landscape scale? Location: Bear River Range, within the Rocky Mountains, in northern Utah and southern Idaho, USA. Method: Forty-seven randomly selected mid-elevation aspen stands were sampled for lichens and stand conditions. Plots were characterized according to tree species cover, basal area, stand age, bole scarring, tree damage, and presence of lichen species. We also recorded ammonia emissions with passive sensors at 25 urban and agricultural sites throughout an adjacent populated valley upwind of the forest stands. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMS) …

Critical infrastructures are the physical and virtual systems essential to the minimum operations of the economy and the government. Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) is a critical agenda item for governments in the developed countries. In these countries, policies and procedures on CIP are already in place and required laws are in action as well. In Turkey, some official introductory studies have been performed in 2009. However, there are a number of steps that Turkey still has to take. In this study, key definitions are provided firstly. After the definitions, the efforts of USA, EU, OECD and NATO are summarized. The …

Editorial: Nutrition Research Reviews, Katherine Younger

Articles

The diverse nature of the reviews included in this issue of Nutrition Research Reviews highlights a problem that is becoming increasingly acute for journal editors, namely that of finding suitable reviewers (especially for the more esoteric manuscripts) who are prepared to devote some of their time and expertise to this crucial task. Peer-review underpins the whole ethos of scientific journal publishing as we currently know it. Without it, readers have little guarantee that the published material is credible, which in turn casts the authors in a dubious light, and with them the editors and publishers of the journals; the whole …

Keeping Them Down On The Farm: The Possibility Of A Class Action By Former Minor League Baseball Players Against Major League Baseball For Allowing Steroid Abuse, Patrick S. Baldwin Jan 2009

Keeping Them Down On The Farm: The Possibility Of A Class Action By Former Minor League Baseball Players Against Major League Baseball For Allowing Steroid Abuse, Patrick S. Baldwin

Georgia Law Review

Over the past five years, allegations and admissions of steroid abuse by professional baseball players have tarnished the image of "Our National Pastime." Although the players are ultimately responsible for using performance-enhancing drugs, they are not solely to blame. Major League Baseball and its franchise owners knew about the abuse and did nothing to stop it-mostly because the threat to home run records had begun refilling the seats that had been lost from the 1994-1995 labor strike. But this steroid scandal has called into question many of those new records and caused outrage among the media, the fans, and even …

What Does "Green" Mean?: Anthropogenic Climate Change, Geoengineering, And International Environmental Law, William D. Davis Jan 2009

What Does "Green" Mean?: Anthropogenic Climate Change, Geoengineering, And International Environmental Law, William D. Davis

Georgia Law Review

Dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate is no longer merely impending-it is now inevitable. Surging fossil fuel use, combined with the failure of mitigation policies and the risk of positive feedback loops in the climate system, is generating interest in international,planetary- scale environmental engineering, known as geoengineering. Over the next few decades, nation-states are likely to engage in such activities as fertilizing marine biota with iron, injecting sulfur into the stratosphere,or deploying mirrors in outer space to counteract the effects of climate change. Such activities, however, risk environmental side effects and political instability, and could precipitate a backlash against geoengineering, which is …

Institute for Sustainable Solutions Publications and Presentations

Anthropogenic pressures on the Earth System have reached a scale where abrupt global environmental change can no longer be excluded. We propose a new approach to global sustainability in which we define planetary boundaries within which we expect that humanity can operate safely. Transgressing one or more planetary boundaries may be deleterious or even catastrophic due to the risk of crossing thresholds that will trigger non-linear, abrupt environmental change within continental- to planetary-scale systems. We have identified nine planetary boundaries and, drawing upon current scientific understanding, we propose quantifications for seven of them. These seven are climate change (CO2 concentration …

Introduction To Common Native And Potential Invasive Freshwater Plants In Alaska, Vanessa Howard Morgan, Mark Sytsma Jan 2009

Introduction To Common Native And Potential Invasive Freshwater Plants In Alaska, Vanessa Howard Morgan, Mark Sytsma

Center for Lakes and Reservoirs Publications and Presentations

Freshwater aquatic plants are found in most lakes and rivers in Alaska. They range from tiny floating plants that can form mats on a lake surface to emergent plants growing two meters above the water. Aquatic plants are an important part of freshwater environments. They provide food and shelter for a wide variety of insects, fish, mammals, and birds; stabilize shorelines; and form an important link in nutrient cycles. To date, Alaska has had relatively few problems with invasive, non-native aquatic plants. However, invasive aquatic plants pose an increasing threat to human safety and the integrity of native aquatic communities. …

Worst Case And The Worst Example: An Agenda For Any Young Lawyer Who Wants To Save The World From Climate Chaos, William H. Rodgers, Jr., Anna T. Moritz

Articles

Wherever you turn with regard to climate change, you'll hear about the worst, and the worst of the worst, and the worst that will happen after that. Young lawyers should put themselves in the right frame of mind to tackle all these "worsts" that are headed our way.

In the interest of keeping it simple, we would suggest a personal strategy for every young lawyer that would entail: (I) Honoring Knowledge and Learning; (II) Protecting Your Institutions and Loving Your Country; (III) Planning and Conducting Your Personal War on Bad Law; and (IV) Rejecting Defeatism and Impossibility Theorems.

Let's consider …

The Effect Of Leadership Skill-Building On Nurse Leader Behaviors, Barbara Drummond-Huth Jan 2009

The Effect Of Leadership Skill-Building On Nurse Leader Behaviors, Barbara Drummond-Huth

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Patient outcome data are an important factor in healthcare. Reports by the Institute of Medicine between 1999 and 2001, as well as recent research by Linda Aiken and her colleagues have added more emphasis to measures that can be taken to improve patient outcomes. Because of the role they play in healthcare facilities, nurse leaders are in a position to take the lead in improving patient outcomes. There is evidence to suggest that nurse leaders' transformational leadership behaviors are associated with positive patient outcomes.

The purpose of this project was to identify the effect of transformational leadership skill-building training on …

Larvicidal Activity Of Extracts From Three Plumbago Spp Against Anopheles Gambiae, Barasa M. Maniafu, Lwande Wilber, Isaiah O. Ndiege, Cornelius C. Wanjala, Teresa Ayuko Akenga

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Three Plumbago spp have been tested for mosquito larvicidal activity. The crude extracts exhibiting the highest larvicidal activity against Anopheles gambiae were hexane (LC50 = 6.4 μg/mL) and chloroform (LC50 = 6.7 μg/mL) extracts from Plumbago zeylanica Linn, chloroform (LC50 = 6.7 ug/mL) extract from Plumbago stenophylla Bull and ethyl acetate (LC50 = 4.1 μg/mL) extract from Plumbago dawei Rolfe. These LC50 values were within 95% confidence limits. 5-hydroxy-2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone (plumbagin) 1 (LC50 = 1.9 μg/mL) and β-sitosterol 2 were characterised from ethyl acetate extract of root bark of P. dawei, a native medicinal plant growing in Kenya, based on spectral …

Relationships Between Participation In Athletics And Substance Use Among School Students, Kevin M. Stockslager Jan 2009

Relationships Between Participation In Athletics And Substance Use Among School Students, Kevin M. Stockslager

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Substance use among high school students has become an increased concern for administrators, parents, and community members. Previous research has demonstrated relationships between adolescent substance use and numerous negative outcomes. This study investigated the relationship between athletic participation and substance use using self-report data from a sample of 139 high school students. Specifically, the current study examined the relationship between frequency and setting of participation in athletic activities (e.g., football, baseball, soccer) and multiple types of substance use (e.g., alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, other illicit drugs) in adolescents. The results of this study indicate that nonathletes reported significantly more marijuana use …

Characterization Of Nprc And Its Binding Partners, Abdel A. Alli Jan 2009

Characterization Of Nprc And Its Binding Partners, Abdel A. Alli

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The C type natriuretic peptide receptor (NPRC) also known as NPR3 is a widely expressed single transmembrane-spanning protein. NPRC functions as a homodimer at the cell surface for the metabolic clearance of a broad range of natriuretic peptides from circulation. The intracellular domain of NPRC is coupled to inhibitory G proteins and is involved in mediating signal transduction. In order to further elucidate the role of NPRC in signal transduction a proteomic approach was taken to identify putative protein binding partners for NPRC in different cell-types. An interrogation of the molecular association between NPRC and its identified protein binding partner(s) …

The Importance Of Benthic Habitats As Reservoirs Of Persistent Fecal Indicator Bacteria, Brian D. Badgley Jan 2009

The Importance Of Benthic Habitats As Reservoirs Of Persistent Fecal Indicator Bacteria, Brian D. Badgley

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Enterococci are fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) that are used worldwide for water

quality assessment. However, evidence of high densities and extended survival of

enterococci in sediments and submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) has caused uncertainty

about their reliability in predicting human health risks from recreational activities in

environmental waters. To address the concern that sediments and SAV may harbor large

reservoirs of enterococci that can affect water column concentrations, aquatic mesocosms

and environmental sampling were employed to investigate patterns of enterococci

densities and population structure across the Tampa Bay watershed.

In mesocosm experiments and environmental samples, SAV harbored higher

densities of …
