Deception, Decisions, And Investor Education, Jayne W. Barnard Jan 2009

Deception, Decisions, And Investor Education, Jayne W. Barnard

Faculty Publications

Tens of millions of dollars each year are spent on investor education. Because older adults (those aged sixty and older) are disproportionately victims of investment fraud schemes, many educational programs are targeted at them. In this Article, Professor Barnard questions the effectiveness of these programs. Drawing on recent studies from marketing scholars, neurobiologists, social psychologists, and behavioral economists examining the ways in which older adults process information and make decisions, she offers a model of fraud victimization (the "deception/decision cycle") that explains why older adults are often vulnerable to investment fraud schemes. She then suggests that many of the factors …

Disordered Eating, Antifat Attitudes, And Barriers To Treatment In College Women From Urban And Rural Areas, Alison Christine Pepper Jan 2009

Disordered Eating, Antifat Attitudes, And Barriers To Treatment In College Women From Urban And Rural Areas, Alison Christine Pepper

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Disordered eating (DE) is associated with physical and emotional consequences. Most incidence studies comparing rates in urban and rural regions are international. Only one examined regional differences within the United States, and no significant differences emerged. Additionally, no investigations focus on DE treatment barriers specific to rural regions. In 106 college women with significant DE patterns, this study investigated weight-based prejudices, system-level barriers, and regional status. Despite no significant regional differences in DE or barriers to treatment, results revealed high prevalence of DE and exposed barriers to DE-treatment among college women. Exploratory analyses supplement the dearth of research focusing on …

The Education Of The Son In Paradise Regained: Milton’S Of Education As A Guide, Alice Matthews Jan 2009

The Education Of The Son In Paradise Regained: Milton’S Of Education As A Guide, Alice Matthews

Quidditas

“The Education of the Son in Paradise Regained: Milton’s Of Education as a Guide” argues that the character of Christ provides a model for effective learning, which is outlined in Milton’s treatise On Education. In the treatise, first published in 1644, some twenty- seven years before his brief epic, Milton explains the purpose for education as strengthening one’s relationship with God, and the best method for acquiring it— gradually, progressing from the easy to the more difficult. In my essay, I will analyze each step in Christ’s education, beginning with his boyhood and culminating in his temptation on …

The Italian, Spanish, And English Fencing Schools In Shakespeare’S England, Stewart Hawley Jan 2009

The Italian, Spanish, And English Fencing Schools In Shakespeare’S England, Stewart Hawley

Quidditas

Three styles of fencing are were taught in England during the Elizabethan era: Italian, Spanish, and English. Non-historical plays of the Elizabethan period are examined to consider what style of fencing was used on stage, and perhaps taught to the actors in plays such as Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, and others. Historically, scholars have chosen to argue that actors of this period were taught an Italian or Spanish style of fencing, often glossing over the English style. I argue that the unique English style of fencing was probably taught to Elizabethan actors. Showing that these three fencing styles have distinct …

In particular, this article details the algorithms and the software design of Radiotherapy optimAl Design (RAD).

Social Factoring The Numbers With Assisted Reproduction, Bridget J. Crawford, Lolita Buckner Inniss Jan 2009

Social Factoring The Numbers With Assisted Reproduction, Bridget J. Crawford, Lolita Buckner Inniss

Publications

In early 2009 the airwaves came alive with sensational stories about Nadya Suleman, the California mother who gave birth to octuplets conceived via assisted reproductive technology. Nadya Suleman and her octuplets are vehicles through which Americans express their anxiety about race, class and gender. Expressions of concern for the health of children, the mother's well-being, the future of reproductive medicine or the financial drain on taxpayers barely conceal deep impulses towards racism, sexism and classism. It is true that the public has had a longstanding fascination with multiple births and with large families. This is evidenced by a long history …

Combating Global White Supremacy In The Digital Era, Jessie Daniels Jan 2009

Combating Global White Supremacy In The Digital Era, Jessie Daniels

Publications and Research

This chapter explores both the ability of white supremacists to connect globally through Internet technologies, and considers international efforts to combat white supremacy. The United States is not a willing partner in fighting white supremacy online due to certain interpretations of the first amendment. However, absolutist views of free speech contradict the Supreme Court of the US which has ruled that there is a burning cross is not protected by the first amendment. Failing to take action against white supremacy online, the US functions as a global haven for hate speech.

Grandparent Custody Disputes And Visitation Rights: Balancing The Interests Of The Child, Parents, And Grandparents, Tara Nielson, Robin Bucaria Jan 2009

Grandparent Custody Disputes And Visitation Rights: Balancing The Interests Of The Child, Parents, And Grandparents, Tara Nielson, Robin Bucaria

Utah Law Review

In many cultures, the basic family unit is the extended family-three and even four generations living under the same roof, nurturing the children and caring for the elderly with blended responsibilities. If a mother left behind young children, she felt it was only right for the children to be raised by aunts or grandmothers because that was in the children's best interest. Under the American legal, system, however, the best interest of the child is a judicial etermination that takes into account a myriad of tangible and, intangible factor that are often grounded in outdated cultural norms.

Synergies And Tensions Between Rural Social Movements And Professional Researchers, Marc Edelman Jan 2009

Synergies And Tensions Between Rural Social Movements And Professional Researchers, Marc Edelman

Publications and Research

This essay outlines approaches to analysing and managing relations between rural activists and academic researchers. It suggests (a) that contemporary social movements engage in knowledge production practices much like those of academic and NGO-affiliated researchers and (b) that the boundaries between activists and researchers are not always as sharp as is sometimes claimed. These blurred boundaries and shared practices can create synergies in activist– academic relations. The essay then examines tensions in the relationship, including activists’ expectation that academic research will be immediately applicable to their struggles and researchers’ expectation that movement participants will accommodate their needs. The final section …

The Impact Of Traditional And Alternative University Teacher Preparation Program Options On Secondary Teacher Candidates’ Knowledge, Skills, Dispositions, And Employment, Rebecca B. Schnabel Jan 2009

The Impact Of Traditional And Alternative University Teacher Preparation Program Options On Secondary Teacher Candidates’ Knowledge, Skills, Dispositions, And Employment, Rebecca B. Schnabel

Student Work

The preparation of secondary teacher candidates through traditional (n = 13) or alternative (n = 15) options did not statistically significantly impact knowledge, skills or dispositions. Results for content knowledge, as measured at entrance to the program based on the Pre-Professional Skills Test, indicate that candidates who entered the traditional secondary teacher preparation program begin their studies with measured content knowledge in reading, writing, and mathematics that was congruent with the content knowledge of post-baccalaureate candidates who entered the alternative secondary teacher preparation program. Furthermore, content knowledge, based on cumulative grade point averages calculated upon completion of all …

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

Bifidobacteria are important members of the human gut flora, especially in infants. Comparative genomic analysis of two Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis strains revealed evolution by internal deletion of consecutive spacer-repeat units within a novel clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat locus, which represented the largest differential content between the two genomes. Additionally, 47 single nucleotide polymorphisms were identified, consisting primarily of nonsynonymous mutations, indicating positive selection and/or recent divergence. A particular nonsynonymous mutation in a putative glucose transporter was linked to a negative phenotypic effect on the ability of the variant to catabolize glucose, consistent with a modification in the …

Smithian Answers To Some Experimental Puzzles, Maria Pia Paganelli Jan 2009

Smithian Answers To Some Experimental Puzzles, Maria Pia Paganelli

Economics Faculty Research

This paper draws attention to the increased use of Adam Smith’s work in the experimental economics literature. It also offers examples of how studying Adam Smith can help formulate possible answers to some otherwise counter-intuitive (if the intuition is based on the Rational-Choice paradigm) experimental results. The first part of the paper presents a short account of how, in recent years, the field has come to recognize the importance of considering other-regarding preferences as well as self-regarding preferences and how it is noticing the wealth of Adam Smith, who dealt with both. The central section of the paper offers examples …

Singing The Word Of God: Five Hymns By President Frederick G. Williams, Frederick G. Williams

BYU Studies

Frederick G. Williams (1787–1842) was a member of the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints under Joseph Smith and served as his personal scribe. His descendant of the same name now examines evidence proving that the Church leader, historian, doctor, editor, and Kirtland landowner also composed hymns. The article discusses the subject matter of Williams's hymns, including Joseph Smith's vision of Enoch, Zion, the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, and Williams's own experience with the gift of tongues.

Natal Habitat Use By Dragonflies Along Landscape Gradients In Rhode Island, Maria Adella Aliberti Lubertazzi Jan 2009

Natal Habitat Use By Dragonflies Along Landscape Gradients In Rhode Island, Maria Adella Aliberti Lubertazzi

Open Access Dissertations

Urban environments often support depauperate insect faunas, although they can serve as suitable habitats for some taxa. The potential value of urban wetlands as habitat for regional dragonfly populations has not been well studied. Landscape patterns of natal habitat use by lentic dragonflies were studied at small wetlands in Rhode Island, U.S.A. during three field seasons (2004, 2005, 2006). Dragonfly exuviae were collected along defined perimeter paths on six (2004) or five (2005, 2006) site visits per season (May- October). The exuviae were identified in the laboratory, and the number collected per species/hour was tallied for each field season. Three …

Advocacy Groups In The Wake Of Hurricane Katrina: Who Shapes Coverage Of Wetlands Loss, Paul Harang Jan 2009

Advocacy Groups In The Wake Of Hurricane Katrina: Who Shapes Coverage Of Wetlands Loss, Paul Harang

LSU Master's Theses

Louisiana’s coastal wetlands provide a habitat for diverse wildlife, recreational opportunities for Louisiana residents and tourists, and an important natural buffer between communities and powerful hurricanes. Because they are disappearing at a rapid rate, coastal wetlands issues have been prominent in south Louisiana for decades. The catastrophic hurricanes of 2005 and 2008 have given the discussion an increased sense of urgency. Through this paper, I explore coverage of wetlands loss in local south Louisiana daily newspapers. Specifically, I try to determine how these papers frame the issue and illuminate how sources present in these stories participate in the construction of …

Characterization Of The Common Eland (Taurotragus Oryx) Estrous Cycle, Parker M. Pennington Jan 2009

Characterization Of The Common Eland (Taurotragus Oryx) Estrous Cycle, Parker M. Pennington

LSU Master's Theses

Three oryx species and nine of eighteen antelope species across three tribes are considered endangered by the IUCN. Though the common eland (Taurotragus oryx) is not endangered, it lends itself well to the adaption of domestic assisted reproductive techniques due to its large size and calm temperament (Hansen et al., 1985). For these techniques to be used efficiently however, the details of the estrous cycle need to be defined within this and other species. Previously, Nowak (1999) proposed the eland estrous cycle to be ~21 days. In addition to cycle length, specifics of the estrous cycle have yet to be …

Virginia Public School Superintendents’ Perceptions Of The Leadership Practices Utilized To Lead Urban, Rural, And Suburban School Divisions, Brian P. Fellows

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if there were differences in the perceptions of the leadership practices utilized by Virginia superintendents in rural, urban, and suburban school divisions. Never before in the history of public education has the spotlight shone so brightly on the field of public education. The federal government seeks guarantees that every child is being educated based on a minimum level of standards and that every school in the country is making annual progress. In this era of accountability, school systems, superintendents, principals, and teachers across Virginia are under immense pressure to have their individual …

The Diverging Meaning Of Good Faith, Mark J. Loewenstein Jan 2009

The Diverging Meaning Of Good Faith, Mark J. Loewenstein

Publications

This article explores the meaning of "good faith" in the context of corporations and unincorporated entities. The courts, particularly in Delaware, have developed two different approaches. In the corporate arena, the courts are fashioning a notion of good faith that seems to require an examination of director motivations. In the unincorporated arena, good faith has a meaning grounded in contract law. These are two different concepts and reflect the fundamental differences between corporations and unincorporated entities, with the former based on fiduciary duties and the latter on contract. There are, however, indications that this "divergence" is starting to disappear, and …

The Subprime Crisis And The Link Between Consumer Financial Protection And Systemic Risk, Erik F. Gerding Jan 2009

The Subprime Crisis And The Link Between Consumer Financial Protection And Systemic Risk, Erik F. Gerding

Publications

This Article will appear in a May 2009 symposium issue of the Florida International University Law Review on the global financial crisis. This Article argues that the current global financial crisis, which was first called the “subprime crisis,” demonstrates the need to revisit the division between financial regulations designed to protect consumers from excessively risky loans and safety-and-soundness regulations intended to protect financial markets from the collapse of financial institutions. Consumer financial protection can, and must, serve a role not only in protecting individuals from excessive risk, but also in protecting markets from systemic risk. Economic studies indicate it is …
