The Cultural Landscape Of Perth's Cemeteries, Daniel J. Mcdonald Jan 2009

The Cultural Landscape Of Perth's Cemeteries, Daniel J. Mcdonald

Theses : Honours

All communities face the issue of what to do with the bodies of the deceased and a wide variety of methods have been employed around the world. Since Perth was founded, the use of cemeteries to fulfil this function was made mandatory by authorities. Although this function has not changed, the form and appearance of cemeteries shows dramatic change over time. Old, traditional cemeteries with their regulated grid layouts and rows of large monumental works have been replaced with new park-like cemeteries with neither religious demarcation nor headstones. This research investigated these changes to the form and spatial organisation of …

Investigating Data Mining Techniques For Extracting Information From Alzheimer's Disease Data, Vinh Quoc Dang Jan 2009

Investigating Data Mining Techniques For Extracting Information From Alzheimer's Disease Data, Vinh Quoc Dang

Theses : Honours

Data mining techniques have been used widely in many areas such as business, science, engineering and more recently in clinical medicine. These techniques allow an enormous amount of high dimensional data to be analysed for extraction of interesting information as well as the construction of models for prediction. One of the foci in health related research is Alzheimer's disease which is currently a non-curable disease where diagnosis can only be confirmed after death via an autopsy. Using multi-dimensional data and the applications of data mining techniques, researchers hope to find biomarkers that will diagnose Alzheimer's disease as early as possible. …

Memory For Music And The Implications Of Expertise For Music Recall: A Review ; Memory For The Recall Of Popular Songs: A Comparative Study Of Musicians And Nonmusicians, Simon Maclachlan Jan 2009

Memory For Music And The Implications Of Expertise For Music Recall: A Review ; Memory For The Recall Of Popular Songs: A Comparative Study Of Musicians And Nonmusicians, Simon Maclachlan

Theses : Honours

How people remember music is not only a practical concern for musicians, it also poses an interesting challenge for psychological theory (Wallace, 1994). One question that has often been overlooked is what occurs during the time that elapses between the stimulus onset (hearing music) and the generation of a response (an indication that the song has been remembered). While there is evidence to show that memory for song may be biased in a forward direction (Sibma, 2003), the role of expertise on memory for song may provide a deeper understanding of the nature of our memory for music. This review …

An Exploration Of The Experiences Leading To Volunteer Facilitation Of Postnatal Depression Peer Support Groups, Tracey Parker Jan 2009

An Exploration Of The Experiences Leading To Volunteer Facilitation Of Postnatal Depression Peer Support Groups, Tracey Parker

Theses : Honours

In recent years literature regarding peer support recovery services has been more prominent. However, little attention has been paid to how these services are used to treat postnatal depression and questions regarding what informs a consumer's decision to become a support person to others remain. The aim of this study was to explore women's postnatal depression and how their experience and recovery informed a decision to become a peer support group facilitator. Participants were eight women who were past or current facilitators with the Post Natal Depression Support Association Inc. (PNDSA). In-depth conversational style interviews were conducted with participants and …

The Role Of Resilience In Second Year University Students, Sarah M. Barbas Jan 2009

The Role Of Resilience In Second Year University Students, Sarah M. Barbas

Theses : Honours

Around one third of all first year University students will not continue their studies in second year. Students who incur difficulties transitioning from one context to another have been found to withdraw due to an inability to cope with the challenges and adversity in their new environment. On the other hand, many students are able to effectively overcome significant difficulties they are faced with during the transition to or through university. This concept may be referred to as resilience. Few studies have investigated the role of resilience in the success of university students with no research currently focusing on second …

Structural Characteristics Of Banksia Woodland Along An Ecohydrological Gradient, Western Australia, Rebecca Thomas Jan 2009

Structural Characteristics Of Banksia Woodland Along An Ecohydrological Gradient, Western Australia, Rebecca Thomas

Theses : Honours

Water availability (the defining feature of a 'hydrological habitat') has a major effect on plant growth, and the physiological and structural characteristics of plants often reflect the availability of this resource. In relation to development of vegetation structural characteristics as a consequence of a given hydrological habitat, it is important to understand whether self-organisation of plant cover (productivity, structure and function) interacts with water availability and if adjustment to water limitation exists ('ecohydrological optimization' or establishment of a 'hydrological equilibrium'). This study tested, through three hypotheses, whether structural and functional attributes of Banksia woodland vary with water availability, i.e. whether …

Fuel Characteristics And Dynamics In Shrublands Of The Transitional Rainfall Zone, Western Australia, Sarah Dalgleish Jan 2009

Fuel Characteristics And Dynamics In Shrublands Of The Transitional Rainfall Zone, Western Australia, Sarah Dalgleish

Theses : Honours

Within the Mediterranean shrublands, fires are particularly intensive and widespread. In the Transitional Rainfall Zone in Western Australia, these large fires bum in areas with high conservation value, and present risks to human lives and infrastructure on properties in the region. The concern for the effect fires have on anthropocentric and ecological values in these shrublands makes it a priority in management to reduce the risks. Of the environmental and biotic factors that influence a fire, fuel is one of the most significant as it has the capacity to determine fire prope1iies such as the intensity, extent, bum pattern within …

The Relationship Between Working Memory Capacity And Movement Memory Of Dancers, Katrina Louise Muller-Townsend Jan 2009

The Relationship Between Working Memory Capacity And Movement Memory Of Dancers, Katrina Louise Muller-Townsend

Theses : Honours

Working memory capacity span tasks are suggested to predict complex cognitive behaviour across varied domains (Conway et al., 2005). However, it has been criticised that expert skills are highly situational and domain specific (Marteniuk, 1974). The current research aimed to investigate whether general memory span was related to movement span, and furthermore, whether this can predict dance learning. It was expected that memory for movement would be positively correlated with measures of working memory, due to the specific components of working memory, such as the capacity of the phonological loop. Furthermore, it was expected on the basis of previous research …

A narrative analysis was conducted. Results. Seven articles were eligible for inclusion. Intervention protocols included computer simulator …

Mothers' And Fathers' Experiences Of Parenting In The Fly-In Fly-Out Mode Of Employment, Patricia Joan Rhodes Jan 2009

Mothers' And Fathers' Experiences Of Parenting In The Fly-In Fly-Out Mode Of Employment, Patricia Joan Rhodes

Theses : Honours

A qualitative study of mothers' and fathers' experiences of parenting in a fly-in fly-out employment arrangement was undertaken. Eight mothers were interviewed individually to investigate their experiences of parenting. Five fathers also participated in individual interviews to examine their experiences of parenting and to substantiate those of mothers. The findings indicated that mothers were subjected to a range of conditions that would not, in the normal course of events, be experienced by mothers with partners in home-based occupations. These circumstances imposed additional stresses on families, but more particularly on mothers. In family systems theory parental stress inevitably resonates throughout the …

Reducing The Complexity Costs Of 401(K) Participation Through Quick Enrollment, James J. Choi, David Laibson, Brigitte C. Madrian Jan 2009

Reducing The Complexity Costs Of 401(K) Participation Through Quick Enrollment, James J. Choi, David Laibson, Brigitte C. Madrian

Faculty Publications

Previous research has shown that 401(k) participation increases dramatically when companies switch from an opt-in to an opt-out (or automatic) enrollment regime (Madrian and Shea 2001; Choi et al. 2004; Choi et al. 2006). Although automatic enrollment has been widely touted as an effective tool for encouraging saving, it has its detractors. Some libertarians dislike automatic enrollment because they view it as coercing individuals into the company-chosen default contribution rate and asset allocation. Indeed, the vast majority of automatically enrolled employees passively accept all of the defaults in the short run, and many remain at those defaults for years (Choi …

Qualitative And Quantitative Methods In Occupational-Stress Research, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Edwin Farrell Jan 2009

Qualitative And Quantitative Methods In Occupational-Stress Research, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Edwin Farrell

Publications and Research

The paper examined the ways in which qualitative and quantitative methods support each other in research on occupational stress. Qualitative methods include (a) eliciting from unconstrained descriptions of work experiences, (b) careful first-hand observations at the workplace, and (c) participant‑observers describing “from the inside” a particular work experience. The paper shows how qualitative research stimulates theory development, hypothesis generation, and the identification of job stressors and coping responses. The limitations of qualitative research, particularly in the area of verification, are also described.

Environmental Politics In Paradise: Resistance To The Selling Of Vieques, Sherrie Baver Jan 2009

Environmental Politics In Paradise: Resistance To The Selling Of Vieques, Sherrie Baver

Publications and Research

The most notable instance of a massive and successful social protest in Puerto Rico in recent years has been on the island of Vieques between 1999 and 2003. This was a rare case in which Puerto Ricans were able to overcome their partisan divisions to end the U.S. Navy's 60 years of training on this small, 51- square-mile island off the main island's east coast. Part of the reason for the Vieques victory, including gaining support from some influential U.S. politicians, was that leaders framed the protest in terms of human rights, public health and environmental degradation rather than Yanqui …

Visitor Perceptions Of Benefits Of Local Park, Deborah L. Kerstetter, Andrew J. Mowen, Nate E. Trauntvein, Toni Liechty, Nuno Rubiero

Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications

Recent research regarding the perceived benets of local parks has been limited, posing a problem for recreation and park directors who must promote the value of and gain support for aging park facilities. To collect evidence concerning the value of local parks and the impact of park upgrades, we conducted a study with one local park to (a) document behavioral changes that have occurred as a result of renovation, and (b) determine the perceived benets of having a community park. Two-thirds of respondents reported visiting the park more frequently since renovations were completed. When asked why they visit the park …

Health Care In America: Historical Context, Current Issues, Future Reform, Emily Boevers Jan 2009

Health Care In America: Historical Context, Current Issues, Future Reform, Emily Boevers

Honors Program Theses

In studying this topic, I used print resources from the last thirty years to investigate the history of the medical profession, including the ideals that shaped it and have bound it for more than 100 years. I studied the attempts at health care reform in the last 100 years, through numerous wars, economic crises, and political flux. I summarized health care systems from ten other developed nations to understand what is working - and what is not - in health care around the world. I surveyed issues plaguing the health care system in America today, and studied the trends that …

Problem-Solving Behaviors In College Relationships, Bethanie Frattini-Scott Jan 2009

Problem-Solving Behaviors In College Relationships, Bethanie Frattini-Scott

Honors Program Theses

This study examined the individual characteristics that affect one’s willingness and ability to resolve problems in romantic relationships and one’s decision to seek support from a romantic partner. One hundred twenty-six college students in romantic relationships completed measures of attachment style, relationship efficacy, partner attributions, and relationship satisfaction, and responded to hypothetical scenarios assessing their problem-solving and support-seeking behaviors. Participants reporting higher attachment ambivalence were more perceptive than others to threats to their relationships and exhibited a greater effort to reduce conflict, although they reported lower levels of confidence in their problemsolving abilities. People reporting higher avoidance anticipated placing greater …

Attention And Memory In Young And Middle-Aged Adults, Emily Sorensen Jan 2009

Attention And Memory In Young And Middle-Aged Adults, Emily Sorensen

Honors Program Theses

Within the field of communication sciences and disorders, studies concerning performance on cognitive tests tend to focus on the differences between young and old-age groups. The geriatric population has significantly increased over the years and will continue to rise in the coming decades. This rise in the number of older adults has resulted in research that is directed towards investigating the decline in cognitive ability in the aging population.

Transcriptional Profiling And Functional Analysis Of Heterokaryon Incompatibility In Neurospora Crassa Reveals That Reactive Oxygen Species, But Not Metacaspases, Are Associated With Programmed Cell Death, Elizabeth Hutchison Jan 2009

Transcriptional Profiling And Functional Analysis Of Heterokaryon Incompatibility In Neurospora Crassa Reveals That Reactive Oxygen Species, But Not Metacaspases, Are Associated With Programmed Cell Death, Elizabeth Hutchison

Biology

Heterokaryon incompatibility (HI) is a nonself recognition phenomenon occurring in filamentous fungi that is important for limiting resource plundering and restricting viral transfer between strains. Nonself recognition and HI occurs during hyphal fusion between strains that differ at het loci. If two strains undergo hyphal fusion, but differ in allelic specificity at a het locus, the fusion cell is compartmentalized and undergoes a rapid programmed cell death (PCD). Incompatible heterokaryons show a macroscopic phenotype of slow growth and diminished conidiation, and a microscopic phenotype of hyphal compartmentation and cell death. To understand processes associated with HI and PCD, we used …
