Compassion: Why It Is Better To Eat Fish, Knowledge@Smu Nov 2009

Compassion: Why It Is Better To Eat Fish, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

Compassion was probably the farthest notion from Colonel Sanders’ mind when he became the global poster boy for delicious fried chicken. He had started his business in the early twentieth century – a period marked by the great depression and two world wars. Prejudices festered under the hostile global climate then, where little consideration was given to the suffering of human beings, much less animals. However, with the progress of time, scientific advancements have urged us, increasingly, to be kinder to fellow humans, animals, the environment… and that we really ought to be munching on fried fish instead.

General Perceptions Of Homosexuality In A Small Private University In The Greater Saint Louis Area, Verenna Huerta, Taylor Morrill Nov 2009

General Perceptions Of Homosexuality In A Small Private University In The Greater Saint Louis Area, Verenna Huerta, Taylor Morrill

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

Homosexuality has long been a major topic of concern among political, social, and religious agendas. Societies have either labeled homosexuality as deviant or non-deviant behavior. This type of categorization has lead to many negative assumptions about those who hold a different type of sexual orientation other than heterosexual. According to Pachankis and Goldfried, (2008, p. 3), “Gay male undergraduate students reported a higher fear of negative evaluation and greater social interaction anxiety than did heterosexual students.” Students in educational systems who are homosexual, bisexual, lesbian, or transgendered often battle with peer evaluation. The knowledge of students’ perceptions, attitudes, and comfort …

Nepal’S Civil War And Its Economic Costs, Gyan Pradhan Ph.D. Nov 2009

Nepal’S Civil War And Its Economic Costs, Gyan Pradhan Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

This paper estimates the macroeconomic effects of increased spending on defense and internal security necessitated by the decade-long Maoist insurgency in Nepal. An investment equation is specified to examine the relationship between defense spending and investment. The estimation results indicate that there is a significant negative effect of defense spending on investment. A simple Harrod-Domar growth relationship is used to estimate the effect of the increase in defense spending on economic growth. This analysis suggests that between 1996 and 2006, the opportunity cost of the conflict in terms of lost output has been about 3 percent of Nepal’s current GDP.

From Gauging Accuracy Of Quantity Estimates To Gauging Accuracy And Resolution Of Measuring Physical Fields, Vladik Kreinovich, Irina Perfilieva Nov 2009

From Gauging Accuracy Of Quantity Estimates To Gauging Accuracy And Resolution Of Measuring Physical Fields, Vladik Kreinovich, Irina Perfilieva

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

For a numerical physical quantity v, because of the measurement imprecision, the measurement result V is, in general, different from the actual value v of this quantity. Depending on what we know about the measurement uncertainty d = V - v, we can use different techniques for dealing with this imprecision: probabilistic, interval, etc.

When we measure the values v(x) of physical fields at different locations x (and/or different moments of time), then, in addition to the same measurement uncertainty, we also encounter another type of localization uncertainty: that the measured value may come not only from the desired location …

Model Fusion Under Probabilistic And Interval Uncertainty, With Application To Earth Sciences, Omar Ochoa, Aaron A. Velasco, Christian Servin, Vladik Kreinovich Nov 2009

Model Fusion Under Probabilistic And Interval Uncertainty, With Application To Earth Sciences, Omar Ochoa, Aaron A. Velasco, Christian Servin, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

One of the most important studies of the earth sciences is that of the Earth's interior structure. There are many sources of data for Earth tomography models: first-arrival passive seismic data (from the actual earthquakes), first-arrival active seismic data (from the seismic experiments), gravity data, and surface waves. Currently, each of these datasets is processed separately, resulting in several different Earth models that have specific coverage areas, different spatial resolutions and varying degrees of accuracy. These models often provide complimentary geophysical information on earth structure (P and S wave velocity structure).

Combining the information derived from each requires a joint …

Exploring The First Year Of Teaching Through Focus Group Discussions, Ethno-Mimesis, A/R/Tography, And Performance Ethnography, Marilyn F. Cullen-Reavill

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The United States is focusing on the important and worthy goal of no child being left behind and in order to accomplish this goal, we must ensure that no teacher, including the first-year teacher, is left behind. This study explores the experiences of three first-year teachers on a monthly basis and uncovers the successes, challenges, supports, and needs that they encounter.

Five research questions guided this study: 1. What are the experiences of a group of first-year teachers and in what ways were these experiences challenging, supportive, or detrimental? 2. What are the benefits for the first-year teachers in meeting …

Gaming The Network Poetic: Networking And Code In Art Games, Joshua A. Fishburn Nov 2009

Gaming The Network Poetic: Networking And Code In Art Games, Joshua A. Fishburn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Videogames have historically used networking either to connect players for competition or cooperation or to provide an ephemeral connection to allow the upload, comparison, or assessment of single-player achievement data. The majority of videogames take place on a screen and on established platforms each of which have physical, technical, and sociocultural constraints that dictate how a player will interact. Recent art games, such as those by Jason Rohrer and the Atari VCS games of Ian Bogost highlight experiments in a more focused use of the medium from concept to interaction, both between the player and the software but also foregrounding …

Exhaustive Exercise Training Enhances Aerobic Capacity In American Alligator (Alligator Mississippiensis), John Eme, Tomasz Owerkowicz, June Gwalthney, Jason M. Blank, Bryan C. Rourke, James W. Hicks Nov 2009

Exhaustive Exercise Training Enhances Aerobic Capacity In American Alligator (Alligator Mississippiensis), John Eme, Tomasz Owerkowicz, June Gwalthney, Jason M. Blank, Bryan C. Rourke, James W. Hicks

Biological Sciences

The oxygen transport system in mammals is extensively remodelled in response to repeated bouts of activity, but many reptiles appear to be ‘metabolically inflexible’ in response to exercise training. A recent report showed that estuarine crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus) increase their maximum metabolic rate in response to exhaustive treadmill training, and in the present study, we confirm this response in another crocodilian, American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis). We further specify the nature of the crocodilian training response by analysing effects of training on aerobic [citrate synthase (CS)] and anaerobic [lactate dehydrogenase (LDH)] enzyme activities in selected skeletal muscles, …

Picture Perfect Job: An Analysis Of The Effects Of Weight On Internship Interviews, John R. Gatermann, Kimberly N. Gould Nov 2009

Picture Perfect Job: An Analysis Of The Effects Of Weight On Internship Interviews, John R. Gatermann, Kimberly N. Gould

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

The purpose of this study was to discover if weight perception has an effect on obtaining an internship. It was hypothesized that a less qualified individual with an average weight appearance will be chosen more often than a qualified person who was above average weight when compared for an internship. Furthermore, people’s perception of weight and how they perceive others based on weight was observed. In the study, participants were directed to evaluate two resumes: one being qualified and one being unqualified and each having either an average weight or above average weight candidate’s photo identification attached. Then, the participants …

Coffee Preferences And Personality, Kristin E. Lantzy Nov 2009

Coffee Preferences And Personality, Kristin E. Lantzy

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

This study explored the relationship between the personality traits of conscientiousness and openness and coffee habits/preferences. A total of 50 participants were included in the study. All participants took part in a personality survey, and those who were coffee drinkers took part in a secondary survey assessing their coffee drinking habits/preferences. Participants with high openness scores had a weak positive correlation with the average cups of coffee consumed per week. They consumed slightly more cups of coffee/week on average. Participants with high conscientiousness scores had a weak negative correlation with the average cups of coffee consumed per week. These participants …

Innovative Public Engagement Practices And Partnerships: Lifting Stakeholder Voices In Education Accountability Policy, Monica Wills, Curtis Brewer, Robert Knoeppel, James Witte, Roy Pargas, Jane Clark Lindle

Publications

In 2008, due to increasing stakeholder dissatisfaction with assessment results and school report cards, South Carolina revised its 1998 Educational Accountability Act and required public engagement with stakeholders including parents/guardians, educators, business and community leaders, and taxpayers. The legislation created partnerships between SC‟s Education Oversight Committee (EOC) and Clemson University. The project also brought together within the university the fields of Applied Sociology, Computer Science, and Educational Leadership. The project involved mixed methods using phone/web surveys with focus groups eliciting perceptions from key stakeholders and under-represented voices in the surveys.

A Phenomenological Study Of Clinicians Treating Traumagenic Compulsions Resulting From Childhood Sexual Abuse, Albert Sarno

Faculty Dissertations

Various types of traumatic compulsive behaviors have been observed by practicing mental health clinicians and yet there is a lack of consensus among such clinicians for treating people in such a problematic state when there is also a history of childhood sexual abuse. Ten seasoned clinicians, each with over 15 years experience in treating patients with traumagenic compulsions and childhood sexual abuse were interviewed to explore their lived experience treating people with traumagenic compulsions due to childhood sexual abuse. A phenomenological design was used to asses the data collected in the study. The data were analyzed to determine the best …

An Examination Of Love And Marital Satisfaction In Long-Term Marriages, Rebeca Isabel Estrada Nov 2009

An Examination Of Love And Marital Satisfaction In Long-Term Marriages, Rebeca Isabel Estrada

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There has been little marital research that focuses on contributing factors to successful long-term marriage and even less focus on the role that love plays in long-term marriage. As a means of furthering this research, the purpose of the current study was to examine levels of satisfaction in couples in long-term marriages and to identify contributing factors to an enduring marriage. This study also examined the significance of love and changes in love after 35+ years of marriage. Through the use of qualitative methodology five couples who were self-identified as "happy" in their marriage and who had been married at …
