The Financing And Reform Of The United States Healthcare System, Sarah Georgeau Bernheisel
The Financing And Reform Of The United States Healthcare System, Sarah Georgeau Bernheisel
Honors Theses
According to the National Center for Health Statistics, approximately forty-five million people in the United States, including nearly nine million children, were without health insurance in 2007 ("Fast Stats A to Z" 1). Additionally, in 2007, nearly 30% of young adults, ages 18-24, in the United States were uninsured ("Income, Poverty, and Health Insurance Coverage" 22). Sadly, none of these figures includes the countless individuals who have insufficient healthcare coverage caused by their high out-of pocket costs compared to their wages.

Molecular Monitoring Of African Swine Fever Control Areas: Adult-Tick Targeted Re-Evaluation Of Mkuze Game Reserve, South Africa, L. F. Arnot, Johan T. Du Toit, A. D.S. Bastos
Wildland Resources Faculty Publications
The Mkuze Game Reserve (MGR), in north-eastern KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa is an African swine fever virus (ASF) controlled area. In a survey conducted in 1978, ASF prevalence in warthogs and Ornithodoros ticks in MGR was determined to be 2% and 0.06%, respectively. These values, acknowledged as being unusually low compared to other East and southern African ASF-positive sylvatic-cycle host populations, have not been assessed since. The availability of a sensitive PCR-based virus detection method, developed specifically for the sylvatic tampan host, prompted a re-evaluation of ASF virus (ASFV) prevalence in MGR ticks. Of the 98 warthog burrows inspected for …

Mitochondrial Fragmentation Is Involved In Methamphetamine-Induced Cell Death In Rat Hippocampal Neural Progenitor Cells., Changhai Tian, L. Charles Murrin, Jialin C. Zheng
Journal Articles: Pharmacology & Experimental Neuroscience
Methamphetamine (METH) induces neurodegeneration through damage and apoptosis of dopaminergic nerve terminals and striatal cells, presumably via cross-talk between the endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria-dependent death cascades. However, the effects of METH on neural progenitor cells (NPC), an important reservoir for replacing neurons and glia during development and injury, remain elusive. Using a rat hippocampal NPC (rhNPC) culture, we characterized the METH-induced mitochondrial fragmentation, apoptosis, and its related signaling mechanism through immunocytochemistry, flow cytometry, and Western blotting. We observed that METH induced rhNPC mitochondrial fragmentation, apoptosis, and inhibited cell proliferation. The mitochondrial fission protein dynamin-related protein 1 (Drp1) and reactive oxygen …
Taming The Employment Sharks: The Case For Regulating Profit-Driven Labor Market Intermediaries In High Mobility Labor Markets, Harris Freeman, George Gonos
Taming The Employment Sharks: The Case For Regulating Profit-Driven Labor Market Intermediaries In High Mobility Labor Markets, Harris Freeman, George Gonos
Faculty Scholarship
Over the last quarter century, a profound restructuring of U.S. labor markets has occurred. Long-term job tenure, internal labor markets, and employer-sponsored benefits have waned under the pressures of neoliberal globalization. The trend is toward increasingly precarious, shorter-term, serial employment relationships that offer significantly lower wages, reduced job-related benefits, and formidable obstacles to the exercise of employment rights. This fundamental shift has moved so-called “non-standard” employment arrangements, once viewed as marginal, into the core economy. As a result, a remarkable array of profit-driven labor market intermediaries (LMIs) are now embedded in mainstream labor markets. Temporary help and staffing agencies, payrolling …

The purpose of this commentary on Chapter 4 of the Proposed ALI Restatement of Employment Law, concerning the tort of wrongful discipline in violation of public policy, is to closely evaluate the current draft in light of the appropriate purposes for a Restatement. Although some value exists in merely stating the consensus respecting these rules, the mission of the ALI extends beyond that, to better adapt the law to social needs and secure the better administration of justice. Our principal problem with the current Restatement draft is that it does not adequately recognize the dynamic nature of this area of …

Clients' Experience Of Effective Psychoanalytic-Psychodynamic Psychotherapy For Major Depression: An Empirical Phenomenological Study, Thomas Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although there is sufficient evidence that psychodynamic therapy for depression is effective, there is no research documenting the qualities of experience in effective psychodynamic therapy for depression. To address this lack, this study aimed to investigate clients' experiences of both the helpful processes and the therapeutic effects of psychodynamic therapy for depression.
Letters, emails, and flyers were distributed and advertisements placed through psychological associations at the local and state level, and letters were mailed to therapists in the greater Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Solicitation procedures yielded four participants of whom three were female and one was male. Participants completed a research …

Understanding A Woman's Moral Obligation To Her Fetus: Maternal-Fetal Conflict As A Covenant Relationship, Marianne Burda
Understanding A Woman's Moral Obligation To Her Fetus: Maternal-Fetal Conflict As A Covenant Relationship, Marianne Burda
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Maternal-fetal conflict refers to a perceived incompatibility between the interests of a pregnant woman and her fetus. Maternal-fetal conflict occurs when a pregnant woman declines a medical treatment or procedure that her physician believes is necessary to benefit her fetus. In some situations, the pregnant woman's health is also at risk. The question explored in this dissertation is: what is the pregnant woman's moral obligation to her fetus when a cesarean section is recommended to save the life of or to prevent serious harm to her term viable fetus? The pregnant woman's life is not endangered.

The Hidden Dichotomy In The Law Of Morality, Justin P. Nichols
Campbell Law Review
This Comment will begin by exploring the dichotomy itself, and then carefully distinguishing civil and religious morality. The analysis will then examine Lawrence and clarify how the opinion affected the dichotomy. Next, this Comment will apply the post-Lawrence understanding of the rational basis test to several issues of concern raised by opponents of the decision. Finally, this Comment will speculate as to the possible implications of Lawrence for moral issues lying on the horizon.
Toward A Comprehensive Program For Regulating Vacant Or Abandoned Dwellings In North Carolina: The General Police Power, Minimum Housing Standards, And Vacant Property Registration, C. Tyler Mulligan
Campbell Law Review
Part I of this Article provides a brief introduction to North Carolina's experience thus far with the foreclosure crisis and introduces the broad array of statutorily granted tools local governments might employ to deal with vacant or abandoned dwellings in varying stages of neglect. Part II discusses the general police power that serves as the first line of defense against the decline of vacant or abandoned housing, as well as how that power is limited by state statutes governing minimum housing standards. Part III then turns to those minimum housing statutes to examine their operation and limitations. Part IV analyzes …
Arresting Development: A Call For North Carolina To Expand Its Forensic Database By Collecting Dna From Felony Arrestees, John Maddux
Campbell Law Review
For nearly twenty years, state and federal law enforcement agencies have turned to DNA databases as a means of identifying offenders, generating leads in cold cases, and on occasion, exonerating the innocent. Naturally, the larger the database, the more likely it is that a new DNA profile entered into the system will generate a match. Currently, fifty states maintain DNA databases, and of those, forty-seven-including North Carolina-collect and store DNA profiles from all persons convicted of any felony offense. Statutes requiring the collection of DNA profiles from convicts are a positive step toward improving the database tools; however, by only …

Public Interest, Professional Bargains: Ethical Conflicts Between Lawyers And Professional Engineers, Elizabeth J. Hubertz
Scholarship@WashULaw
Environmental experts come from many fields, including biology, geosciences, ecology, chemistry, engineering, social science, and economics. Each discipline has its own set of norms, practices, ethics, guidelines, and procedures, which differ from those of the legal profession. Wherever the disciplines intersect, there is a potential for disagreement. This Article examines one such set of potential clashes — the conflict between a lawyer‘s duties of loyalty and confidentiality, and the engineer‘s paramount duty to the public health, safety, and welfare.

The Neuropsychological Functioning Of Men Residing In A Homeless Shelter, Sara Murray Hegerty
The Neuropsychological Functioning Of Men Residing In A Homeless Shelter, Sara Murray Hegerty
Dissertations (1934 -)
The number of homeless individuals in the U.S. has continued to increase, with men comprising the majority of this population. These men are at substantial risk for neuropsychological impairment due to several factors, such as substance misuse, severe mental illness, untreated medical conditions (e.g., diabetes, liver disease, HIV/AIDS), poor nutrition, and the increased likelihood of suffering a traumatic brain injury. Impairments in attention, memory, executive functioning, and other neuropsychological domains can result in poor daily functioning and difficulty engaging in psychological, medical, or educational services. Thus, knowledge of the neuropsychological functioning of homeless men is critical for those who work …
