Review Of The Misuse Of Kava Among Indigenous Australians, Belinda Urquhart, Neil Thomson Jan 2009

Review Of The Misuse Of Kava Among Indigenous Australians, Belinda Urquhart, Neil Thomson

Research outputs pre 2011

Indigenous Australians experience a significant, disproportionate burden of ill-health when compared with non-Indigenous Australians. This is evidenced in the higher rates of disease and injury in the Indigenous population and their substantially lower life expectancy [1, 2]. The factors contributing to the poor health status of Indigenous Australians are extensive and complex, and reflect events involving dispossession, alienation, and segregation. Despite the multiplicity of factors responsible for the sub-standard health status of Indigenous people, substance use and abuse is one factor that has been identified as having a detrimental impact on poor health [3, 4]. A considerable body of research …

Intensity Of Herbivory On Kelp By Fish And Sea Urchins Differs Between Inshore And Offshore Reefs, Mathew Vanderklift, Paul Lavery, Kris Waddington Jan 2009

Intensity Of Herbivory On Kelp By Fish And Sea Urchins Differs Between Inshore And Offshore Reefs, Mathew Vanderklift, Paul Lavery, Kris Waddington

Research outputs pre 2011

Interactions between water motion, primary productivity, and herbivory are complex. Rates of grazing by fish on tropical coral reefs and by sea urchins on temperate rocky reefs are usually high, but can be low in areas of extreme water motion. Some herbivores can switch between mobile (grazing) and sedentary (drift-feeding) behaviours, and this can be influenced by water motion. We compared the relative consumption of the kelp Ecklonia radiata at rocky reefs in western Australia with different wave exposures (inshore versus offshore). No herbivory was recorded offshore, suggesting that wave exposure might inhibit herbivory. We also compared grazing by fish …

Interactive Effects Of Timing, Intensity And Duration Of Experimental Shading On Amphibolis Griffithii, Paul Lavery, Kathryn Mcmahon, Michael Mulligan, Andrew Tennyson

Research outputs pre 2011

The responses of the seagrass Amphibolis griffithii to different experimental shading conditions were examined by characterising biomass, morphological and physiological features. In an in situ experiment, the intensity (ambient, moderate shading [13 to 19% of ambient] and high shading [5 to 11% of ambient]), duration (3, 6, 9 mo) and timing (post-summer, post-winter) of light reductions were manipulated. We observed interactive effects of all 3 factors, the most notable being with timing. When moderate shading was imposed at the end of summer there was a 57% loss of leaf biomass and 67% loss of rhizome carbohydrates within 3 mo. The …

Rf Magnetron Sputtered (Bidy)3(Fega)5o12:Bi2o3 Composite Garnet-Oxide Materials Possessing Record Magneto-Optic Quality In The Visible Spectral Region, Mikhail Vasiliev, Mohammad Alam, V.A. Kotov, Kamal Alameh, V.I. Belotelov, V.I. Burkov, A.K. Zvezdin

Research outputs pre 2011

Bismuth-substituted iron garnets are considered to be the most promising magneto-optical materials because of their excellent optical transparency and very high magneto-optical figures of merit in the near-infrared spectral region. However, the practical application of garnets in the visible and short-wavelength infrared parts of spectrum is currently limited, due to their very high optical absorption (especially in sputtered films) in these spectral regions. In this paper, we identify the likely source of excess absorption observed in sputtered garnet films in comparison with epitaxial layers and demonstrate (Bi,Dy)(3)(Fe,Ga)(5)O(12): Bi(2)O(3) composites possessing record MO quality in the visible region.

An Opto-Vlsi-Based Reconfigurable Optical Add-Drop Multiplexer Employing An Off-Axis 4-F Imaging System, Mingya Shen, Feng Xiao, Selam Ahderom, Kamal Alameh

Research outputs pre 2011

A novel reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer (ROADM) structure is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. The ROADM structure employs two arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs), an array of optical fiber pairs, an array of 4-f imaging microlenses that are offset in relation to the axis of symmetry of the fiber pairs, and a reconfigurable Opto-VLSI processor that switches various wavelength channels between the fiber pairs to achieve add or drop multiplexing. Experimental results are shown, which demonstrate the principle of add/drop multiplexing with crosstalk of less than -27dB and insertion loss of less than 8dB over the Cband for drop and through operation …

Water, Ecology And Health: Ecosystems As Settings For Promoting Health And Sustainability, Margot Parkes, Pierre Horwitz Jan 2009

Water, Ecology And Health: Ecosystems As Settings For Promoting Health And Sustainability, Margot Parkes, Pierre Horwitz

Research outputs pre 2011

Despite the proposed ecological and systems-based perspectives of the settings-based approach to health promotion, most initiatives have tended to overlook the fundamental nature of ecosystems. This paper responds to this oversight by proposing an explicit re-integration of ecosystems within the healthy settings approach. We make this case by focusing on water as an integrating unit of analysis. Water, on which all life depends, is not only an integral consideration for the existing healthy settings (schools, hospitals, workplaces) but also highlights the ecosystem context of health and sustainability. A focus on catchments (also know as watersheds and river basins) exemplifies the …

Evolving The Quality Of A Model-Based Test Suite, Usman Farooq, Chiou P. Lam Jan 2009

Evolving The Quality Of A Model-Based Test Suite, Usman Farooq, Chiou P. Lam

Research outputs pre 2011

Redundant test cases in newly generated test suites often remain undetected until execution and waste scarce project resources. In model-based testing, the testing process starts early on in the developmental phases and enables early fault detection. The redundancy in the test suites generated from models can be detected earlier as well and removed prior to its execution. The article presents a novel model-based test suite optimization technique involving UML activity diagrams by formulating the test suite optimization problem as an Equality Knapsack Problem. The aim here is the development of a test suite optimization framework that could optimize the model-based …

A Max-Min Multiobjective Technique To Optimize Model Based Test Suite, Usman Farooq, Chiou P. Lam Jan 2009

A Max-Min Multiobjective Technique To Optimize Model Based Test Suite, Usman Farooq, Chiou P. Lam

Research outputs pre 2011

Generally, quality software production seeks timely delivery with higher productivity at lower cost. Redundancy in a test suite raises the execution cost and wastes scarce project resources. In model-based testing, the testing process starts with earlier software developmental phases and enables fault detection in earlier phases. The redundancy in the test suites generated from models can be detected earlier as well and removed prior to its execution. The paper presents a novel max-min multiobjective technique incorporated into a test suite optimization framework to find a better trade-off between the intrinsically conflicting goals. For illustration two objectives i.e. coverage and size …

A Quest Through Chaos: My Narrative Of Illness And Recovery, Katie Ellis Jan 2009

A Quest Through Chaos: My Narrative Of Illness And Recovery, Katie Ellis

Research outputs pre 2011

Narrative is vital, as the ill person works out their changing identity, and position in the world of health, continuing when they are no longer ill, but remain marked by their experience. 2 Following the tradition of illness auto ethnographers (Frank, The Wounded Storyteller; Ettore; Rier), this article critically examines the role of narrative throughout recovery from serious illness or trauma by connecting the (my) autobiographical to the social, political and cultural. The focus then shifts to the recent emergence of illness narrative blogging to consider their cultural significance before exploring stigma and resistance to the telling of illness narratives …

Iterated Prisoner's Dilemma For Species, Philip Hingston Jan 2009

Iterated Prisoner's Dilemma For Species, Philip Hingston

Research outputs pre 2011

The Iterated Prisoner's Dilemma (IPD) is widely used to study the evolution of cooperation between self-interested agents. Existing work asks how genes that code for cooperation arise and spread through a single-species population of IPD playing agents. In this paper, we focus on competition between different species of agents. Making this distinction allows us to separate and examine macroevolutionary phenomena. We illustrate with some species-level simulation experiments with agents that use well-known strategies, and with species of agents that use team strategies.

Health Communication Theories: Implications For Hiv Reporting In Asia And The Pacific, Trevor Cullen Jan 2009

Health Communication Theories: Implications For Hiv Reporting In Asia And The Pacific, Trevor Cullen

Research outputs pre 2011

This paper focuses on the expanding HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) epidemic in parts of Asia and the Pacific region and recommends the adoption of insights from particular health communication theories. The author argues that these paradigms can assist in broadening the current scope and content of HIV reporting. One theory in particular - Social Change Communication (SCC) - challenges the media to extend the framing of HIV from primarily a health story to one that is linked to more macro socio-economic, cultural and political factors. Asian and Pacific countries that have an emerging or expanding HIV epidemic need to realise …

A Review Of Interventions To Encourage Smes To Make Environmental Improvements, Craig M. Parker, Janice Redmond, Mike Simpson Jan 2009

A Review Of Interventions To Encourage Smes To Make Environmental Improvements, Craig M. Parker, Janice Redmond, Mike Simpson

Research outputs pre 2011

Small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) are an important part of the world economy but they are thought to be responsible for around 60% of all carbon dioxide emissions and 70% of all pollution. SMEs often have major problems with limited resources, limited knowledge and limited technical capabilities to deal with their own negative environmental impact. SMEs exhibit widely differing characteristics and commitment where environmental issues are concerned. Yet under these conditions they are all expected to engage in environmental improvement. Interventions that encourage environmental improvement are often polarised between regulation and legislation at one extreme and voluntary environmental agreement …

Environmental Education In Small Business: The Owner-Manager's Perspective, Janice Redmond, Elizabeth Walker Jan 2009

Environmental Education In Small Business: The Owner-Manager's Perspective, Janice Redmond, Elizabeth Walker

Research outputs pre 2011

Traditionally, environmental education has been aimed at the community or in primary schools and governmental pressure to reduce environmental damage has focussed on large businesses. More recently, the role and importance of small business and how to engage them in the environmental debate has come under scrutiny. Researchers have identified education as one method of increasing the understanding of small business owner-managers’ role and knowledge of practices that, when implemented, will reduce the negative impacts of their businesses. However, there is little attention given in the literature to the perspective of the small business owner-manager and environmental education. This research …

Novel Colour Selection Scheme For 2d Barcode, Hiroko Kato, Keng T. Tan, Douglas Chai

Research outputs pre 2011

The use of colours in 2D barcodes is challenging. This is even more so in barcodes for mobile devices. Although 2D barcodes are fast becoming the ubiquitous tool for mobile computing, most implementations considered monochromatic 2D barcodes. A few colour 2D barcodes are emerging but these implementations only utilises a limited number of colours. In this paper, we present the challenges faced by the use of colours in 2D barcodes for mobile devices. We also introduce a novel colour selection scheme for 2D barcode, which is implemented in our novel colour 2D barcode - the MMCCTM. Our novel selection scheme …

Research outputs pre 2011

We review how intertidal biodiversity is responding to globally driven climate change, focusing on long-term data from rocky shores in the British Isles. Physical evidence of warming around the British Isles is presented and, whilst there has been considerable fluctuation, sea surface temperatures are at the highest levels recorded, surpassing previous warm periods (i.e. late 1950s). Examples are given of species that have been advancing or retreating polewards over the last 50 to 100 yr. On rocky shores, the extent of poleward movement is idiosyncratic and dependent upon life history characteristics, dispersal capabilities and habitat requirements. More southern, warm water …

Opto-Vlsi-Based Reconfigurable Photonic Rf Filter, Feng Xiao, Mingya Shen, Budi Juswardy, Kamal Alameh

Research outputs pre 2011

Radio frequency (RF) signal processors based on photonics have several advantages, such as broadband capability, immunity to electromagnetic interference, flexibility, and light weight in comparison to all-electronics RF filters. It still requires innovative research and development to achieve high-resolution reconfigurable photonic RF signal processors featuring high selectivity, resolution, wide tunability, and fast reconfigurability. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate the concept of a reconfigurable photonic RF filter structure integrating an Amplified Spontaneous Emission (ASE) source, an Opto-VLSI processor that generates arbitrary phase-only steering and multicasting holograms for wavelength selection and attenuation, arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs) for waveband multiplexing …

Adiabatically Induced Coherent Josephson Oscillations Of Ultracold Atoms In An Asymmetric Two-Dimensional Magnetic Lattice, Ahmed Abdelrahman, Peter Hannaford, Kamal Alameh Jan 2009

Adiabatically Induced Coherent Josephson Oscillations Of Ultracold Atoms In An Asymmetric Two-Dimensional Magnetic Lattice, Ahmed Abdelrahman, Peter Hannaford, Kamal Alameh

Research outputs pre 2011

We propose a new method to create an asymmetric two-dimensional magnetic lattice which exhibits magnetic band gap structure similar to semiconductor devices. The quantum device is assumed to host bound states of collective excitations formed in a magnetically trapped quantum degenerate gas of ultracold atoms such as a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) or a degenerate Fermi gas. A theoretical framework is established to describe possible realization of the exciton-Mott to discharging Josephson states oscillations in which the adiabatically controlled oscillations induce ac and dc Josephson atomic currents where this effect can be used to transfer n Josephson qubits across the asymmetric …

The Implementation Of The Framework Of 21st Century Schools: A Comparison Of Two Rural, West Virginia High Schools., Cynthia Phillips Kolsun

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

While prior research exists that high schools need to make changes to meet the needs of the students of the 21st Century, no research exists from the perspective of the teacher who must implement the changes. This qualitative study provides a comparison of two rural model 21st Century high schools in West Virginia, both members of the High Schools That Work network, and factors that impacted their initial benchmarking of 21st Century through a cross case analysis. The purpose of this study was to add to the body of knowledge concerning the factors that affecting the West Virginia framework of …

The Global Intellectual Property Order And Its Undetermined Future, Peter K. Yu Jan 2009

The Global Intellectual Property Order And Its Undetermined Future, Peter K. Yu

Faculty Scholarship

As an introduction to the inaugural issue of the new WIPO Journal, this essay highlights some of the key recent developments in the intellectual property field. The essay begins by discussing the increasingly complex, and at times incoherent, international legal order governing the protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights. It shows how much the system has been transformed since the launch of the Paris and Berne Conventions in the 1880s.

The essay then examines the increasingly polarized debate on intellectual property law and policy. Although the debate’s growing divisiveness is understandable, given the rapid expansion of intellectual property rights …

An Exploration Of A Model Of Social Networks And Multilateral Negotiations, Bruce Money, Chad R. Allred Jan 2009

An Exploration Of A Model Of Social Networks And Multilateral Negotiations, Bruce Money, Chad R. Allred

Faculty Publications

Multilateral (many‐party) negotiations are much more complex than traditional two‐party negotiations. In this article, we explore a model of social network activity, especially clique formation, among parties engaged in multilateral negotiation and the implications that such networks might have on the negotiation process and outcome. Using data collected from 375 subjects participating in a negotiation simulation, our results reveal that, primarily, the negotiator’s perspectives of clique formation (coalition building) — both his or her own and the other party’s — have unique effects on the integrative, problem‐solving approaches used in the process and on the negotiator’s satisfaction with outcomes. Secondarily, …
