An Interactive Manual For Informal Caregivers Of Cerebral Vascular Accident (Cva) Survivors, Lindsay Draayer, Kaila Gunderson

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Based on data from the literature review and clinical experience, an interactive manual was developed for occupational therapists to utilize when working with caregivers of cerebral vascular accident (CVA) survivors. CVA survivors display difficulty in basic personal cares such as eating, dressing, and general mobility within, but not limited to, the first year following the onset of the CVA. An interactive caregiving manual was created that addresses the needs of a caregiver of a CVA survivor during their transition from hospital to home. This focused education program enhances communication between the family caregiver of the CVA survivor and the occupational …

Deconstructing The Bill Of Rights In Administrative Adjudication--Enfranchising Constitutional Principles In The Process, Shiv Narayan Persaud Jan 2009

Deconstructing The Bill Of Rights In Administrative Adjudication--Enfranchising Constitutional Principles In The Process, Shiv Narayan Persaud

Journal Publications

With the increased tendency toward governmental oversight in modern society, Congress deemed it fit to delegate some of its lawmaking authority to the other branches of government. While this action has effectuated the promulgation of regulations and resolution of disputes through adjudicatory proceedings, the area of administrative law continues to be challenging, especially where it poses concerns regarding an individual’s basic rights. This Article will focus discussion on some fundamental issues relating to the administrative process and explore the ramifications on the individual.

Proximal Sciatic Nerve Intraneural Ganglion Cyst, Karin R. Swartz, Dianne Wilson, Michael Boland, Dominic B. Fee

Neurosurgery Faculty Publications

Intraneural ganglion cysts are nonneoplastic, mucinous cysts within the epineurium of peripheral nerves which usually involve the peroneal nerve at the knee. A 37-year-old female presented with progressive left buttock and posterior thigh pain. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a sciatic nerve mass at the sacral notch which was subsequently revealed to be an intraneural ganglion cyst. An intraneural ganglion cyst confined to the proximal sciatic nerve has only been reported once prior to 2009.

Wartime America And The Wire: A Response To Posner’S Post-9/11 Constitutional Framework, Dawinder S. Sidhu

Faculty Scholarship

This article challenges Not a Suicide Pact by using a single component of practical experience that has factored into legal reasoning: television. In particular, it will invoke various themes from The Wire—an HBO series that explores the relationship between the drug trade and law enforcement in Baltimore, Maryland—to demonstrate the problematic nature of the aforementioned arguments set forth in Posner’s book.

Consumer Scams And The Elderly: Preserving Independence Through Shifting Default Rules, Nathalie Martin Jan 2009

Consumer Scams And The Elderly: Preserving Independence Through Shifting Default Rules, Nathalie Martin

Faculty Scholarship

Modern technology has made it easier than ever for scammers, legitimate businesses with dubious intentions, and even charities to take advantage of telemarketing. For reasons including reduced mental faculties and loneliness, the elderly are increasingly at risk for losing money, credit, and ultimately independence to those who would exploit them. In this Article, Professor Martin explores the benefits of existing regulations, bankruptcy, and reverse mortgages as solutions to these problems. Professor Martin also recommends a new default rule for elderly consumers: no solicitations unless the consumer opts in.

An Examination Of The Relationships Among Cardiorespiratory Fitness Status, Body Mass Index, Appetite And Grelin, Jennifer Arts

Open Access Master's Theses

Problem Statement: Obesity and its related metabolic disorders rank among the leading causes of illness and mortality worldwide. The prevalence of obesity has led researchers to focus on body weight regulation and the balance between energy intake and energy expenditure.

Background: Studies have suggested that ghrelin is involved in both short and long term energy balance. Previous research has examined the relationships among BMI, ghrelin and appetite but few studies have investigated the role that fitness status plays in relation to these.

Methods: Data from two studies that were previously conducted in the Energy Metabolism Laboratory were combined for a …

The Impact Of Attachment Style On Joint Identity, Sarah Tardiff Zaitchik Jan 2009

The Impact Of Attachment Style On Joint Identity, Sarah Tardiff Zaitchik

Open Access Master's Theses

Attachment theory begins with the assumption that adults enter relationships with well-developed mental representations of self and others that regulate cognitive, affective, and behavioral response patterns in close relationships. It has been studied extensively in the past, and it addresses an impressive array of research questions concerning the functions, emotional dynamics, evolutionary origins, and developmental pathways of human affectional bonds. Joint identity has been studied in terms of its involvement and impact on the process of being "in love", relational satisfaction, and interpersonal closeness. Joint identity is the extent to which one self-identifies as an autonomous individual, or connected as …

An Examination Of Mindfulness And Substance Use Among College Students, Anne Christie Fernandez Jan 2009

An Examination Of Mindfulness And Substance Use Among College Students, Anne Christie Fernandez

Open Access Master's Theses

A growing body of research indicates that mindfulness-based therapies may be useful for treating substance abuse. However, the incorporation of mindfulness into substance abuse treatment is limited by a lack of basic research in this area. For example, instruments designed to measure mindfulness vary widely in content and validity and the fundamental relationships among mindfulness, alcohol use, and drug use are not well-understood. Accordingly, this study sought to validate an emerging measure of mindfulness, the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ), and examine its relationship with substance use among a sample of 316 current or former college students. The purported factor …

Elementary School Children’S Recognition Of And Experiences With Bullying: Gender And Developmental Differences, Robyn B. Bratica Jan 2009

Elementary School Children’S Recognition Of And Experiences With Bullying: Gender And Developmental Differences, Robyn B. Bratica

Open Access Master's Theses

Previous research has indicated that boys and girls differ in the ways that they display aggression and experience victimization. This purpose of this study is to examine the ability of children, in the third and fifth grade, to correctly differentiate between various forms of aggressive acts and pro-social behavior. The results of this study indicated that though there appear to be developmental differences in the identification of aggression, there was not evidence to support gender differences. The study also provides information regarding rates of peer victimization. Specifically, groups of children who self-report higher rates of victimization are identified, as well …

Microrna Expression Profiling Of Male Breast Cancer., Matteo Fassan, Raffaele Baffa, Juan P Palazzo, Joshua Lloyd, Marco Crosariol, Chang-Gong Liu, Stefano Volinia, Hannes Alder, Massimo Rugge, Carlo M Croce, Anne Rosenberg

Department of Urology Faculty Papers

INTRODUCTION : MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of small noncoding RNAs that control gene expression by targeting mRNAs and triggering either translation repression or RNA degradation. Their aberrant expression may be involved in human diseases, including cancer. To test the hypothesis that there is a specific miRNA expression signature which characterizes male breast cancers, we performed miRNA microarray analysis in a series of male breast cancers and compared them with cases of male gynecomastia and female breast cancers. METHODS : Paraffin blocks were obtained at the Department of Pathology of Thomas Jefferson University from 28 male patients including 23 breast …

Population Structure Of The Invasive Round Goby In Lake Michigan, Elizabeth A. Larue, Carl Ruetz Iii, Ryan Thum Jan 2009

Population Structure Of The Invasive Round Goby In Lake Michigan, Elizabeth A. Larue, Carl Ruetz Iii, Ryan Thum

Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts

The recent establishment of the round goby (Neogobius melanostomus), an invasive fish in Lake Michigan, provides a model system to view fine scale evolutionary and ecological processes that can create genetic structure within a population. We used seven nuclear polymorphic microsatellite markers (N = 11-17 per site) and measurements of fish total length, weight, and sex (N = 20-74 per site) on round gobies captured by minnow traps and angling among 12 sites around the entire shore of Lake Michigan to determine if evolutionary processes are present in Lake Michigan by characterizing population structure of the round goby. Specific objectives …

From Soldadera To Adelita: The Depiction Of Women In The Mexican Revolution, Delia Fernández Jan 2009

From Soldadera To Adelita: The Depiction Of Women In The Mexican Revolution, Delia Fernández

McNair Scholars Journal

Popular images of women during the Mexican Revolution (1911-1920) often depict them as dressed provocatively, yet wearing a bandolier and gun. Although the image is common, its origin is not well known. An examination of secondary literature and media will show the transformation in the image of the female soldier (soldadera) over the course of the Revolution from that of the submissive follower into a promiscuous fighter (Adelita). The soldaderas exhibited masculine characteristics, like strength and valor, and for these attributes, men were responsible for reshaping the soldadera’s image into the ideal (docile, yet licentious) woman of the time.

Language, Culture, Perception And Knowledge, Alfredo Hernandez Corsen Jan 2009

Language, Culture, Perception And Knowledge, Alfredo Hernandez Corsen

McNair Scholars Journal

The complexity of our diverse communities requires us to reflect on pre-conceived notions of understanding that shape worldviews. This project examines approaches that exclude divergent perspectives, while promoting intolerant ideologies that limit our possibilities for shared learning. It also explores crucial elements that shape our understanding in an effort to expose the limitations created by absolute frames of mind. This research involves an analysis of scientific and religious fundamentalist outlooks that negate vital opportunities for discovery through mutual collaboration and the acknowledgment of exclusive and incomplete perspectives that discourage and undervalue diversity.

Beyond Economics: The U.S. Recognition Of International Financial Reporting Standards As An International Subdelegation Of The Sec's Rulemaking Authority, Jacob L. Barney Jan 2009

Beyond Economics: The U.S. Recognition Of International Financial Reporting Standards As An International Subdelegation Of The Sec's Rulemaking Authority, Jacob L. Barney

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

A final rule promulgated by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in 2008 allowing foreign private securities issuers to prepare SEC-required financial disclosures under international financial reporting standards (IFRS) as promulgated by the International Accounting Standards Board (LASB) is a highly significant event for U.S. and global capital markets. However, surprisingly few questions have been asked regarding the SEC's legal authority to take such an unprecedented step.

This Note assesses the recent SEC action with regard to IASB from two perspectives--traditional administrative law, with particular emphasis on delegations by government entities to private parties, and international law, with particular emphasis …

Arctic Warming: Environmental, Human, And Security Implications, Mary B. West

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

Arctic warming has myriad implications for the Arctic environment, residents, and nations. Although definitive predictions are difficult, without question the scope and rapidity of change will test the adaptive capacities of the Arctic environment as well as its residents. Warming is affecting marine ecosystems and marine life, terrestrial ecosystems, and the animals and people who depend on them. Human impacts include effects on access to food and resources; health and well being; and community cohesion, traditions, and culture. Increased shipping and resource activity create the need for additional maritime presence and security; better environmental and safety regulations; peaceful resolution of …
