The Psychometric Properties Of The Mahan And Ditomasso Anger Scale (Mad-As) And Its Relationship To Cognitive Distortions And Attitudes Among Adults Who Experience Symptoms Of Anger, Dorothy Latella-Zakhireh

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

The influence of cognitive schema on negative emotions such as depression and anger has been investigated in a number of prior studies. This study sought to assess the relationship between anger and various components of anger with cognitive distortions, and dysfunctional attitudes in a nonclinical sample. Subjects were 128 adult males and females who completed several measures related to anger and cognitive distortions. The measures were the Mahan and DiTomasso Anger Scale (MAD-AS), the Inventory of Cognitive Distortions (ICD), and the Dysfunctional Attitudes Scale (DAS). It was hypothesized that cognitive distortions including depressogenic cognitions, as reflected in various subscales of …

These Aren't Your Mothers And Fathers Experiments (Abstract), Thomas J. Santner Jan 2009

These Aren't Your Mothers And Fathers Experiments (Abstract), Thomas J. Santner

Kenneth C. Schraut Memorial Lectures

Informal experimentation is as old as humankind. Statisticians became seriously involved in the conduct of experiments during the early 1900s when they devised methods for the design of efficient field trials to improve agricultural yields. During the 1900s statistical methodology was developed for many complicated sampling settings and a wide variety of design objectives.

An Outpouring Of ‘Faithful’ Words: Protestant Publishing In The United States, William Vance Trollinger Jan 2009

An Outpouring Of ‘Faithful’ Words: Protestant Publishing In The United States, William Vance Trollinger

History Faculty Publications

In a period characterized by expanding markets, national consolidation, and social upheaval, print culture picked up momentum as the nineteenth century turned into the twentieth. Books, magazines, and newspapers were produced more quickly and more cheaply, reaching ever-increasing numbers of readers. Volume 4 of A History of the Book in America traces the complex, even contradictory consequences of these changes in the production, circulation, and use of print.

Contributors to this volume explain that although mass production encouraged consolidation and standardization, readers increasingly adapted print to serve their own purposes, allowing for increased diversity in the midst of concentration and …

Preparation And Characterization Of Some Substituted Benzyl N-Nitrosocarbamates Containing An N-2-(Methylthio)Ethyl Or A Bis(2-Aminoethyl)Sulfide Functionality, Satya Venkata, Eric Shamo, Vladimir Benin Jan 2009

Preparation And Characterization Of Some Substituted Benzyl N-Nitrosocarbamates Containing An N-2-(Methylthio)Ethyl Or A Bis(2-Aminoethyl)Sulfide Functionality, Satya Venkata, Eric Shamo, Vladimir Benin

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The synthesis and characterization of some substituted benzyl N-nitrosocarbamates with an N-2-(methylthio)ethyl or a bis(2-aminoethyl)sulfide functionality is reported, as a part of a long-term goal to design and prepare novel photolabile structures that could be used as substances for controlled release of alkylating and/or crosslinking agents. The synthesis was accomplished by reaction of benzyl chloroformates with the corresponding amines, resulting in the preparation of carbamates. The latter were subsequently nitrosated, utilizing two different N-nitrosation methods, to yield the target structures.

On Mutilation: The Sublime Body Of Chuck Palahniuk's Fiction, Andrew Slade Jan 2009

On Mutilation: The Sublime Body Of Chuck Palahniuk's Fiction, Andrew Slade

English Faculty Publications

Much of Chuck Palahniuk's writing centers on the mutilation of bodies. Bodies are broken from the outside. They are beaten unrecognizable and destroyed beyond recuperation. Bodies are transformed from one sex to another, one gender to another. In Palahniuk's writing, the human body is the site for the inscription of a search for modes of authentic living in a world where the difference between the fake and the genuine has ceased to function. Not just the rules that had regulated behavior and prospects for a good life, but the rules that determine desire, pleasure, gender identity, and family role are …

A Preliminary Study Of A Non-Invasive Glucose Sensor Based On A Mercury Sensor, Erin Wood Jan 2009

A Preliminary Study Of A Non-Invasive Glucose Sensor Based On A Mercury Sensor, Erin Wood

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Diabetes mellitus is a potentially lethal disease that affects 7.6 percent of American people. In the US, it is recognized as the 6th leading cause of death. Failure to control blood glucose levels (BGL) in patients with either type of diabetes can lead to other serious complications as well, such as loss of limb, blindness and other health problems. Controlling and monitoring the BGL in post-op and intensive care patients in the hospital is also vital to their health. Currently the most reliable method of monitoring BGL is through an invasive procedure which monitors the amount of glucose in blood …

An Architecture For High-Performance Privacy-Preserving And Distributed Data Mining, James Secretan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation discusses the development of an architecture and associated techniques to support Privacy Preserving and Distributed Data Mining. The field of Distributed Data Mining (DDM) attempts to solve the challenges inherent in coordinating data mining tasks with databases that are geographically distributed, through the application of parallel algorithms and grid computing concepts. The closely related field of Privacy Preserving Data Mining (PPDM) adds the dimension of privacy to the problem, trying to find ways that organizations can collaborate to mine their databases collectively, while at the same time preserving the privacy of their records. Developing data mining algorithms for …

Determining Emissions From Landfills And Creating Odor Buffer Distances, Nicholas Guarrieloo Jan 2009

Determining Emissions From Landfills And Creating Odor Buffer Distances, Nicholas Guarrieloo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With population growing every year, more and more people are looking for places to live. This can lead to construction of houses near and around landfills. As homes get closer to landfills, the odors these landfills produce become more of a problem, and lead to an increase in odor complaints. Modeling these odors and recommending odor buffer distances will help determine limits on how close to landfills new homes should be allowed. This should help reduce future odor complaints. To solve this problem one must accurately estimate odorous gas emissions from the landfill. Often odors can be indicated by methane …

Reduction of crash occurrence on the various roadway locations (mid-block segments; signalized intersections; un-signalized intersections) and the mitigation of injury severity in the event of a crash are the major concerns of transportation safety engineers. Multi lane arterial roadways (excluding freeways and expressways) account for forty-three percent of fatal crashes in the state of Florida. Significant contributing causes fall under the broad categories of aggressive driver behavior; adverse weather and environmental conditions; and roadway geometric and traffic factors. The objective of this research was the implementation of innovative, state-of-the-art analytical methods to identify the contributing factors for crashes and injury …

Sintering Additives For Nanocrystalline Titania And Processing Of Porous Bone Tissue Engineering Scaffolds, Arun Menon Jan 2009

Sintering Additives For Nanocrystalline Titania And Processing Of Porous Bone Tissue Engineering Scaffolds, Arun Menon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Titania (Titanium dioxide, TiO2) has been researched as a promising biomaterial due to its excellent biocompatibility. However, the main limitation of titania is its poor mechanical properties which limit its use in many load-bearing applications. In this thesis report, the properties of titania were improved by doping with small quantities of MgO, ZnO and SiO2 as sintering additives. Nanocrystalline powder was selected, as it possesses outstanding properties over conventional coarse-grained powders due to reduced grain size. Nanocrystalline anatase powder of size 5-15 nm was synthesized via a simple sol-gel technique. Small quantities of dopants were introduced into pure titania powder, …

A Study Of Central Florida Nonroad Voc And Nos Emissions And Potential Actions To Reduce Emissions, Michael Radford Jan 2009

A Study Of Central Florida Nonroad Voc And Nos Emissions And Potential Actions To Reduce Emissions, Michael Radford

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ground-level ozone is harmful to the human respiratory system, as well as the environment. The national EPA 8-hour ozone standard for ground-level ozone was reduced from 85 parts per billion (ppb) to 75 ppb in 2008, and trends from previous years show that some of the counties in Central Florida could be in danger of violation. Violation means "non attainment" status; in which the county is ordered by EPA to develop specific implementation plans to reduce its emissions. The objective of this study was to compile an emissions inventory of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) from nonroad …

Sister Katie: The Memory And Making Of A 1.5 Generation Working Class Transnational, Caroline Waldron Merithew Jan 2009

Sister Katie: The Memory And Making Of A 1.5 Generation Working Class Transnational, Caroline Waldron Merithew

History Faculty Publications

Identifying the theoretical and chronological fault lines that divide immigration and women’s history, I use memory and biography to argue that assimilation and transnationalism in the 1.5 and second generations were not oppositional. In this article, I tell the story of an Italian immigrant who moved to the United States as a young child and who became a self-proclaimed “left winger.” I cast Katie’s story less from her own words as from the recollections of others who remade and remembered her from the 1930s until 1960. I argue that a working-class transnational’s identity was one that could move through large …

Transport Of Dust And Anthropogenic Aerosols Across Alexandria, Egypt, Hesham El-Askary, R. Farouk, C. Ichoku, Menas Kafatos Jan 2009

Transport Of Dust And Anthropogenic Aerosols Across Alexandria, Egypt, Hesham El-Askary, R. Farouk, C. Ichoku, Menas Kafatos

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The flow of pollutants from Europe and desert dust to Europe from the Sahara desert both affects the air quality of the coastal regions of Egypt. As such, measurements from both ground and satellite observations assume great importance to ascertain the conditions and flow affecting the Nile Delta and the large city of Alexandria. We note that special weather conditions prevailing in the Mediterranean Sea result in a westerly wind flow pattern during spring and from North to South during the summer. Such flow patterns transport dust-loaded and polluted air masses from the Sahara desert and Europe, respectively, through Alexandria, …

Accredited Indians: Increasing The Flow Of Private Equity Into Indian Country As A Domestic Emerging Marke, Gavin Clarkson Jan 2009

Accredited Indians: Increasing The Flow Of Private Equity Into Indian Country As A Domestic Emerging Marke, Gavin Clarkson

University of Colorado Law Review

Indian Country is America's domestic emerging market, and, as in other emerging markets, many successful businesses in Indian Country are starving for expansion capital. The U.S. Treasury estimates that the private-equity deficit in Indian Country is $44 billion. While the handful of wealthier tribes might be logical investors in private-equity funds deploying capital in Indian Country, the existing securities laws present a significant impediment. In particular, Regulation D of the Securities Act of 1933 does not treat tribes as "accredited investors," thus denying those tribes the ability to participate in the private-equity market. Since there is no principled reason to …

The Changing Scope Of The United States' Trust Duties To American Indian Tribes: Navajo Nation V. United States, Kimberly C. Perdue Jan 2009

The Changing Scope Of The United States' Trust Duties To American Indian Tribes: Navajo Nation V. United States, Kimberly C. Perdue

University of Colorado Law Review

The mineral wealth beneath Native American lands has been an enduring source of controversy with respect to treaty relations between Indian Tribes and the United States government and the contours of the United States' trust duties to the Tribes. Whereas in past years the process by which minerals like coal have been converted to capital amounted to blatant exploitation of America's indigenous populations, Indian governments have acquired more control over the extraction of their minerals throughout the twentieth century. That this control remains severely limited both by federal regulations and the United States government's complicity with powerful representatives of the …

The Rocky Path From Section 601 Of The Iirira To Issue- Specific Asylum Legislation Protecting The Parents Of Fgm-Vulnerable Children, Andy Rottman Jan 2009

The Rocky Path From Section 601 Of The Iirira To Issue- Specific Asylum Legislation Protecting The Parents Of Fgm-Vulnerable Children, Andy Rottman

University of Colorado Law Review

Political asylum in the United States is intended to protect those who fear persecution if they are returned to their country of origin. Arguably, the United States asylum system works reasonably well when the asylum seeker fits neatly within the statutory asylum scheme. If, however, asylum seekers' claims fall outside the statute, the asylum system can work inhumane results. In these situations, Congress can use issue-specific legislation to protect a group facing a discrete humanitarian crisis. This was done in section 601 of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 ("IIRIRA"), which explicitly provided asylum protection to …

Why Waste Water? A Bifurcated Proposal For Managing, Utilizing, And Profiting From Coalbed Methane Discharged Water, Samuel S. Bacon Jan 2009

Why Waste Water? A Bifurcated Proposal For Managing, Utilizing, And Profiting From Coalbed Methane Discharged Water, Samuel S. Bacon

University of Colorado Law Review

The Coalbed Methane ("CBM") industry is booming throughout the Rocky Mountain West, creating a relatively clean energy alternative, much needed jobs in the region, and a deluge of water pumped from the ground in connection with CBM capture. In order to free the valuable natural gas, companies must first pump out substantial quantities of subsurface water holding the pressurized gas in place. This water varies in quality, from perfectly useful, potable water to poor-quality water with the potential to destroy the surrounding environment. Correspondingly, disposal of the pumped water varies from simply releasing it into streams surrounding the CBM pads …

Class Dismissed: Equal Protection, The "Class-Of-One," And Employment Discrimination After Engquist V. Oregon Department Of Agriculture, Matthew M. Morrison Jan 2009

Class Dismissed: Equal Protection, The "Class-Of-One," And Employment Discrimination After Engquist V. Oregon Department Of Agriculture, Matthew M. Morrison

University of Colorado Law Review

This Note examines whether government employees should be able to assert so-called "class-of-one" claims against public employers under the Fourteenth Amendment's Equal Protection Clause. Traditional equal protection claims allege that the government has impermissibly singled out the plaintiff for disparate treatment on account of his or her race, gender, or some other trait shared with a larger class of individuals. Such claims reflect the traditional understanding of the Equal Protection Clause as a prohibition on discriminatory group classifications. Class-of-one claims, however, merely allege that the plaintiff was intentionally singled out from other similarly situated individuals and subjected to unequal treatment …

New York Climate Change Report Card: Improvement Needed For More Effective Leadership And Overall Coordination With Local Government, Patricia E. Salkin Jan 2009

New York Climate Change Report Card: Improvement Needed For More Effective Leadership And Overall Coordination With Local Government, Patricia E. Salkin

University of Colorado Law Review

Climate change has rapidly become a focal point of international environmental policy debate as countries seek to develop and implement strategies to address the critical need to slow the pace of global warming. In the United States, the failure of the federal government to muster the political will necessary to deal with the challenges on a national level has placed the onus on state and local governments to assume a leadership role. As laboratories of innovation, state and local governments continue to experiment with a wide range of policies and initiatives designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote the use …

Toward A Net-Zero Carbon Planet: A Policy Proposal, Matthew J. Kiefer Jan 2009

Toward A Net-Zero Carbon Planet: A Policy Proposal, Matthew J. Kiefer

University of Colorado Law Review

The effort to address climate change is global in scale and increasingly urgent, yet it lacks an effective policy framework. President Obama's determination to elevate clean energy to a national policy priority, Congress's consideration of a federal cap-and-trade regime for greenhouse gases, and the upcoming revisions to the Kyoto Protocol all provide an opportunity to move toward adopting a globally balanced carbon budget. A balanced carbon budget could replace the current, somewhat arbitrary greenhouse gas reduction targets with a scientifically derived calibration limiting global carbon emissions to the rate of carbon absorption. Carbon sub-budgets could then be allocated to each …
