Hexabromocyclododecane Decreases Tumor-Cell-Binding Capacity And Cell-Surface Protein Expression Of Human Natural Killer Cells, Natasha C. Hinkson, Margaret M. Whalen Nov 2009

Hexabromocyclododecane Decreases Tumor-Cell-Binding Capacity And Cell-Surface Protein Expression Of Human Natural Killer Cells, Natasha C. Hinkson, Margaret M. Whalen

Chemistry Faculty Research

Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) is a flame retardant that decreases the lytic function of human natural killer (NK) cells. NK cells defend against tumor cells and virally infected cells. Thus, HBCD has the potential to increase cancer incidence and viral infections. NK cells must bind to their targets for lysis to occur. Thus, concentrations of HBCD that decrease lytic function were examined for their ability to alter NK binding to tumor targets. Levels of HBCD that caused a loss of binding function were examined for effects on expression of cell surface proteins needed for binding. NK cells exposed to HBCD for 24 …

Immigrant Granite Installer Killed After Falling With Homemade Construction Box, Kentucky Injury Prevention And Research Center Nov 2009

Immigrant Granite Installer Killed After Falling With Homemade Construction Box, Kentucky Injury Prevention And Research Center

Fatality Case Reports--Falls

On a summer day in 2009, a 50-year-old granite installer and his two sons were working alone at a construction site when the granite installer fell out of a second story window and was killed. The three granite installers worked for a subcontractor hired to install granite vanity tops and sinks in a newly constructed hotel. Work had commenced at 7:00 AM that morning. They were installing the second set of ten vanities for the day. All ten vanities, with back and side splash pieces, had been loaded onto a homemade three-sided construction box and lifted via a forklift to …

Blogging Out Of Debt: An Observational Netnography, Wendy Garland Nov 2009

Blogging Out Of Debt: An Observational Netnography, Wendy Garland

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to observe weblogs in their natural setting and to investigate the nature of collective learning within the debt blogging community. How individuals who blog their experiences with getting out of debt use their weblogs as well as the role of the commenter in the debt blogging process were also researched. Four distinct literature pools were used to frame this study including the theory of social constructivism, the context of communities of practice, the problem of consumer debt, and the medium of blogging. Utilizing observational netnography, six weblogs were researched which were comprised of individuals …

Method For Diagnosing Selected Adenocarcinomas, Siamak Tabibzadeh, Ravi Kothapalli Nov 2009

Method For Diagnosing Selected Adenocarcinomas, Siamak Tabibzadeh, Ravi Kothapalli

USF Patents

A method for the early diagnosing of selected adenocarcinomas in a human comprising the steps of removing a bodily sample from the human, and assaying the bodily sample for elevated expression of a specific gene. The gene being assayed for in the, bodily sample is the TGFB-4 gene (hereinafter referred to as the endometrial bleeding associated factor (ebaf) gene. The bodily sample can be tissue from a specific organ in the body, or a blood sample. Increased levels of ebaf in the sample relative to basal levels may be indicative of a mucinous adenocarcinoma of the colon or ovaries, or …

Detection Of Sub-Clinical Cwd Infection In Conventional Test-Negative Deer Long After Oral Exposure To Urine And Feces From Cwd+ Deer, Nicholas J. Haley, Candace K. Mathiason, Mark D. Zabel, Glenn C. Telling, Edward A Hoover Nov 2009

Detection Of Sub-Clinical Cwd Infection In Conventional Test-Negative Deer Long After Oral Exposure To Urine And Feces From Cwd+ Deer, Nicholas J. Haley, Candace K. Mathiason, Mark D. Zabel, Glenn C. Telling, Edward A Hoover

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Chronic wasting disease (CWD) of cervids is a prion disease distinguished by high levels of transmissibility, wherein bodily fluids and excretions are thought to play an important role. Using cervid bioassay and established CWD detection methods, we have previously identified infectious prions in saliva and blood but not urine or feces of CWD+ donors. More recently, we identified very low concentrations of CWD prions in urine of deer by cervid PrP transgenic (Tg[CerPrP]) mouse bioassay and serial protein misfolding cyclic amplification (sPMCA). This finding led us to examine further our initial cervid bioassay experiments using sPMCA.

OBJECTIVES: We sought …

A Functional Role For The Ventrolateral Prefrontal Cortex In Non-Spatial Auditory Cognition, Y. E. Cohen, B. E. Russ, S. J. Davis, A. E. Baker, A. L. Ackelson, R. Niteck

Dartmouth Scholarship

Spatial and non-spatial sensory information is hypothesized to be evaluated in parallel pathways. In this study, we tested the spatial and non-spatial sensitivity of auditory neurons in the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (vPFC), a cortical area in the non-spatial pathway. Activity was tested while non-human primates reported changes in an auditory stimulus' spatial or non-spatial features. We found that vPFC neurons were reliably modulated during a non-spatial auditory task but were not modulated during a spatial auditory task. The degree of modulation during the non-spatial task correlated positively with the monkeys' behavioral performance. These results are consistent with the hypotheses that …

Data Curation Profiles Directory

The data set described in this data curation profile is derived from two studies. The initial study investigated the effects of phosphorus and potassium nutrients on the ability of alfalfa to recover from stress brought on by the winter season or the close cutting done in harvesting. The second study was a response to the first and sought to examine changes in taproot, physiology, biochemistry, and gene expression during the summer to further understand alfalfa persistence through the winter. The data management needs include further development of the data description for it to be shared with and understood by multiple …

The Home Of Truth: The Metaphysical World Of Marie Ogden, Stanley J. Thayne Nov 2009

The Home Of Truth: The Metaphysical World Of Marie Ogden, Stanley J. Thayne

Theses and Dissertations

Marie Ogden's Home of Truth colony—a religious community that was located in southern Utah during the 1930s and 40s—was part of a segment of the American religious landscape that has largely been overlooked. As such, her movement points to a significant gap in the historiography of American religion. In addition to documenting the history of this obscure community, I situate Marie Ogden as part of what I call the early new age of American religion, an underdeveloped part of the broader categories of metaphysical religion or Western esotericism. This thesis also points to several other overlooked figures from the same …

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Anibamine And Its Analogs As Novel Anti-Prostate Cancer Agents, Kendra Haney Nov 2009

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Anibamine And Its Analogs As Novel Anti-Prostate Cancer Agents, Kendra Haney

Theses and Dissertations

The chemokine receptor CCR5 has been implicated in the pathogenesis of prostate cancer. A novel natural product, anibamine, was isolated and found to be a micromolar inhibitor of the receptor. Anibamine was used as a new anti-prostate cancer lead compound. To discover the pharmacophore, analogs of anibamine were designed using the “deconstruction-reconstruction-elaboration” approach and synthesized. The establishment of a stereoselective route to only one isomer was explored, to increase yield and eliminate elaborate purification procedures. Analogs were found to have anti-prostate cancer activity at levels higher than the parent compound. The molecular modeling studies of the deconstructed analogs indicate that …
