Plato On Truth And Falsehood, Anne M. Wiles
Plato On Truth And Falsehood, Anne M. Wiles
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
The argument of this paper is that Plato's position on medicinal lies is neither dishonest nor inconsistent. When adequately understood in its context, the account Plato gives of truth and falsehood offers valuable insights into the nature of each and the role both play in the moral life of the individual and the state.

Background: Previous reports have suggested that new evidence of the comparative effectiveness of different medication classes from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) does not always alter treatment decisions for first-line anti-hypertensive therapy. Objectives: To evaluate the association of RCT evidence in December 2002 from the Anti-hypertensive and Lipid-Lowering treatment to prevent Heart Attack Trial (ALLHAT) on use of anti-hypertensive medications in a multi-ethnic cohort. Methods: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) study, a prospective cohort study of 6814 adults from four ethnic groups, had four separate assessments of drug use. Users of anti-hypertensive medications at baseline were excluded. We evaluated temporal …

First paragraph:
The review by E. Post et al. ("Ecological dynamics across the Arctic associated with recent climate change," 11 September 2009, p. 1,355) paid little heed to parasites and other pathogens. The rapidly growing literature on parasites in arctic and subarctic ecosystems provides empirical and observational evidence that climate-linked changes have already occurred. The life cycle of the protostrongylid lungworm of muskoxen, Umingmakstrongylus pallikuukensis, has changed, and the range of that organism and the winter tick, Dermacentor albipictus, has expanded.

The impact of expanding civilization on the health of American indigenous societies has long been studied. Most studies have focused on infections and malnutrition that occurred when less complex societies were incorporated into more complex civilizations. The details of dietary change, however, have rarely been explored. Using the analysis of starch residues recovered from coprolites, here we evaluate the dietary adaptations of indigenous farmers in northern Chile's Atacama Desert during the time that the Inka Empire incorporated these communities into their economic system. This system has been described as "complementarity" because it involves interaction and trade in goods produced at …

Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research
Fingertip force scaling for lifting objects frequently occurs in anticipation of finger contact. An ongoing question concerns the types of memories that are used to inform predictive control. Object-specific information such as weight may be stored and retrieved when previously encountered objects are lifted again. Alternatively, visual size and shape cues may provide estimates of object density each time objects are encountered. We reasoned that differences in performance with familiar versus novel objects would provide support for the former possibility. Anticipatory force production with both familiar and novel objects was assessed in six left hemisphere stroke patients, two of whom …

The Anchor: 2009
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.
Mothers' Perceptions Of Website Information In Solving Behavioral Problems In Children With Disabilities, Heather Collins
Mothers' Perceptions Of Website Information In Solving Behavioral Problems In Children With Disabilities, Heather Collins
Theses and Dissertations
This research investigated the needs of mothers in regard to designing an educational website for parents/caregivers of children with disabilities. This research was designed to provide information to inform outreach efforts of Brigham Young University's Family HOPE (Happiness, Optimism, Promise, and Excellence) Project. This project assists families struggling with child behavior problems. Results from this study provided an initial understanding of the potential for a website to offer support to families not directly served through the Family HOPE project. Participants included 26 adult females, 25 mothers and one female caregiver. Each participant was the primary caregiver of a child with …

Dopamine-Stimulated Dephosphorylation Of Connexin 36 Mediates Aii Amacrine Cell Uncoupling, W Wade Kothmann, Stephen C Massey, John O'Brien
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Gap junction proteins form the substrate for electrical coupling between neurons. These electrical synapses are widespread in the CNS and serve a variety of important functions. In the retina, connexin 36 (Cx36) gap junctions couple AII amacrine cells and are a requisite component of the high-sensitivity rod photoreceptor pathway. AII amacrine cell coupling strength is dynamically regulated by background light intensity, and uncoupling is thought to be mediated by dopamine signaling via D(1)-like receptors. One proposed mechanism for this uncoupling involves dopamine-stimulated phosphorylation of Cx36 at regulatory sites, mediated by protein kinase A. Here we provide evidence against this hypothesis …

Optimization of Biodegradability and Toxicity Testing of Degradation Product from Linear Alkyl Benzene Sulfonate (LAS) Surfactant as Cleaning Detergent Agent. Linear Alkyl Benzene Sulfonate (LAS) is a surfactant used in laundry detergent as cleaning agent and toxic to aquatic organisms. Results shows, with the LAS concentration used (20 ppm) in medium, adaptation time and Acinetobacter sp. growth has shown better biodegradation ability than three other bacteria used Pseudomonas putida, Pseudomonas fluorescence, Bacillaria spp. Thus, Acinetobacter sp is used further for biodegradation process of LAS. Based on its biodegradation half-life using Acinetobacter sp, and with mixed culture (± 52.32% and ± …

Clinicians As Service Designers? Reflections On Current Transformation In The Uk Health Services, Valerie Carr, Daniela Sangiorgi, Monika Büscher, Sabine Junginger
ServDes Conference Series
The British National Health Service (NHS) has been involved in profound transformation to keep pace with; and shape; changes in our society. Innovation has been driven by the necessity to transform old hierarchical and paternalistic models into a modern health system; moving care closer to home; mobilizing and tailoring services to individual patients' and their carers' needs through the introduction of radically new services. This paper explores a particular element of ongoing NHS reform: Practice Based Commissioning (PBC). Based on first findings of a research project called “Design in Practice. Change and Flexibility within Health Providers” funded by the EPSRC …

Participative, Co-Operative, Emancipatory: From Participatory Design To Service Design, Stefan Holmlid
ServDes Conference Series
In the discourse of service design; terms such as platforms; transformation and co-creation have become part of what seems to be an emergent lingua franca. In the participatory design discourse; and the surrounding design traditions; related terms and ideas were developed. The development of the discourse of participatory design; during the last three decades of the 20th century; influence the way we understand the provisions for and possibilities of service design. The analysis is performed along three themes collected from the development of participatory design; and examples of how the legacy of participatory design has been appropriated are given. We …

Laugh and enthused voices fill the big lecture room when four groups around the room play a Character Game; a game that combines elements from role-playing and personas. We have decided to share the user study results in a service design project within multidisciplinary group of people from three companies [designers; managers etc.] by playing a design game; a game in which the participants should step into someone else's shoes. We; the researchers who have developed the game; have been anxious about peoples' reactions but now we start to relax; the game seems to work after all. The atmosphere feels …

Beyond The Experience. In Search Of An Operative Paradigm For The Industrialisation Of Services, Nicola Morelli
ServDes Conference Series
After many years; in which service design occupied some blurred areas in different disciplines; this activity is now creating its own ground and consolidating both practice and research. The increasing number of conferences and publications on service design; the growing number of cases and the emergence of new education programs are contributing to raise service design to the status of an independent disciplinary area. The contributions to the definition of a disciplinary corpus for service design come from two main directions: the first concerns the definition of a methodological framework for service design. This area is developing methodological tools for …

‘Love Lewisham’, Improving Stakeholder Satisfaction In Local Government Service: A Case Study Of Strategic Public Sector Service Innovation, Alison Prendiville
ServDes Conference Series
This paper will present a case study on how the London Borough of Lewisham is creating 'pull' services using technology to address specific community problems relating to the local environment by opening up new communications channels between residents; council staff and other local government stakeholders. The focus will initially centre on how the service design has been effective strategically; impacting internally on the organisational culture within Lewisham's Environment Office and; at the same time; involving residents in the service provision thus providing a feedback mechanism and voice of local residents. The paper will then explore the specific nature of 'Love …
