Sources Of Social Support Among Special Education Teachers In Jordan And Their Relationship To Burnout, Osamah Bataineh Dec 2009

Sources Of Social Support Among Special Education Teachers In Jordan And Their Relationship To Burnout, Osamah Bataineh

International Education

This study investigated the source of social support (supervisors, colleagues, friends, spouse, and family) that would be the most efficient in reducing burnout among special education teachers. A sample of 83 special education teachers (43 men and 40 women) completed Burnout and Sources of Social Support questionnaires. Person correlation coefficients and ANOVA procedures were utilized to analyze data. Results revealed significant positive correlations between family support and personal accomplishments; marital status, age, and teaching experience were not significantly related to any of the three burnout dimensions. Results were interpreted and implications for special education teachers were suggested.

The Alberta Legal Services Mapping Project: Report For The Calgary Judicial District, Glynnis Lieb, Stephanie Abel, Mary Stratton, Diana Lowe Dec 2009

The Alberta Legal Services Mapping Project: Report For The Calgary Judicial District, Glynnis Lieb, Stephanie Abel, Mary Stratton, Diana Lowe

Canadian Forum on Civil Justice

The „justice system‟ is a fundamental and far-reaching component of our system of democracy in Alberta. It is not one united system but an institutionalized process to address criminal and civil conflicts. It is made up of a complexity of organizations with overlapping provincial and federal jurisdictions. There are substantive and procedural laws with four broad divisions: civil, family, criminal and administrative. Many of these laws and the legal services associated with them, function to avoid conflict and legal problems. Ideally, legal services work to resolve conflicts without resorting to the courts or tribunals, the purpose of which is to …

Measuring Freedom: An Analysis Of The Economic Freedom Index, Derek Mcafee Dec 2009

Measuring Freedom: An Analysis Of The Economic Freedom Index, Derek Mcafee

All Theses

The creation and empirical use of economic freedom indices has produced a growing amount of literature over the last decade. A survey of this literature is provided, and the difficulty of measuring this concept, as well as the usefulness and limits of the various indices are discussed. The indices are reduced to their components, and testable models are used in order to determine which components are most important. Secure property rights are found to be the most important component driving the results. The results are consistent with previous studies, which indicate that greater economic freedom is related to greater growth …

Microsphere Based Protease Assays And High Throughput Screening Of Bacterial Toxin Proteases, Matthew J. Saunders Dec 2009

Microsphere Based Protease Assays And High Throughput Screening Of Bacterial Toxin Proteases, Matthew J. Saunders

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Proteases, proteins which cleave peptide bonds in other proteins, are a large and varied group of proteins which regulate a variety of physiological processes. Methodologies to study proteases are often protease specific and often differ greatly from the roles proteases play in vivo. In vitro protease assays often use peptide based substrates, which do not take into account highly specific interactions distal from the proteolytic site of peptide cleavage on protease substrates. In the work described here we have developed a microsphere based protease assay, capable of using full length protease substrates, and have successfully measured proteolytic activity via loss …

Inducible Heat Shock Protein 70 Enhances Human Papillomavirus Type 31 Genome Replication, Viral Capsid Protein Nuclear Localization And Progeny Virion Morphogenesis In Human Keratinocytes, Hebin Song Dec 2009

Inducible Heat Shock Protein 70 Enhances Human Papillomavirus Type 31 Genome Replication, Viral Capsid Protein Nuclear Localization And Progeny Virion Morphogenesis In Human Keratinocytes, Hebin Song

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are small, non-enveloped double stranded DNA viruses that demonstrate a strict species and cell type tropism for human epithelial cells. The association between high-risk HPV types and cervical cancer is well established. Additionally, HPVs have been implicated as causes in development of several other epithelial cancer types. Increasing data indicate heat shock proteins (HSPs) including inducible HSP70 (HSP70i) are involved in the replicative cycles of different viruses including adenoviruses, polyomaviruses (PyV), and some RNA viruses. Cell-free system studies implicate HSP70i in HPV11 genome replication with E1 and E2 proteins, and there is evidence that HSP70 is involved …

Pot1 Proteins In Green Algae And Land Plants: Dna-Binding Properties And Evidence Of Co-Evolution With Telomeric Dna, Eugene V. Shakirov, Xiangyu Song, Jessica A. Joseph, Dorothy E. Shippen Dec 2009

Pot1 Proteins In Green Algae And Land Plants: Dna-Binding Properties And Evidence Of Co-Evolution With Telomeric Dna, Eugene V. Shakirov, Xiangyu Song, Jessica A. Joseph, Dorothy E. Shippen

Biological Sciences Faculty Research

Telomeric DNA terminates with a single-stranded 3′ G-overhang that in vertebrates and fission yeast is bound by POT1 (Protection Of Telomeres). However, no in vitro telomeric DNA binding is associated with Arabidopsis POT1 paralogs. To further investigate POT1–DNA interaction in plants, we cloned POT1 genes from 11 plant species representing major branches of plant kingdom. Telomeric DNA binding was associated with POT1 proteins from the green alga Ostreococcus lucimarinus and two flowering plants, maize and Asparagus. Site-directed mutagenesis revealed that several residues critical for telomeric DNA recognition in vertebrates are functionally conserved in plant POT1 proteins. However, the plant proteins …

True catalases are tyrosine-liganded, usually tetrameric, hemoproteins with subunit sizes of ∼55-84 kDa. Recently characterized hemoproteins with a catalase-related structure, yet lacking in catalatic activity, include the 40-43 kDa allene oxide synthases of marine invertebrates and cyanobacteria. Herein, we describe the 1.8 Å X-ray crystal structure of a 33 kDa subunit hemoprotein from Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis (annotated as MAP-2744c), that retains the core elements of the catalase fold and exhibits an organic peroxide-dependent peroxidase activity. MAP-2744c exhibits negligible catalatic activity, weak peroxidatic activity using hydrogen peroxide (20/s) and strong peroxidase activity (∼300/s) using organic hydroperoxides as co-substrate. Key amino …

The goal of this work is to investigate, for a large set of patients, the motion of the heart with respiration during free-breathing supine medical imaging. For this purpose we analyzed the motion of the heart in 32 non-contrast enhanced respiratory-gated 4D-CT datasets acquired during quiet unconstrained breathing. The respiratory-gated CT images covered the cardiac region and were acquired at each of 10 stages of the respiratory cycle, with the first stage being end-inspiration. We devised a 3-D semi-automated segmentation algorithm that segments the heart in the 4D-CT datasets acquired without contrast enhancement for use in estimating respiratory motion of …

Heme Reversibly Damps Period2 Rhythms In Mouse Suprachiasmatic Nucleus Explants, C. J. Guenthner, David Bickar, Mary E. Harrington

Psychology: Faculty Publications

The hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), which in mammals serves as the master circadian pacemaker by synchronizing autonomous clocks in peripheral tissues, is composed of coupled single-cell oscillators that are driven by interlocking positive/negative transcriptional/translational feedback loops. Several studies have suggested that heme, a common prosthetic group that is synthesized and degraded in a circadian manner in the SCN, may modulate the function of several feedback loop components, including the REV-ERB nuclear receptors and PERIOD2 (PER2). We found that ferric heme (hemin, 3-100 μM) dose-dependently and reversibly damped luminescence rhythms in SCN explants from mice expressing a PER2::LUCIFERASE (PER2::LUC) fusion protein. …

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa

Access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) is increasing in resource-limited settings (RLS) and can successfully reduce HIV-related morbidity and mortality. However, virologic failure and development of viral drug resistance can result in reduced treatment options and disease progression. Additionally, transmission of resistant virus, and particularly multi-drug resistance, could become a public health concern. This study evaluated treatment success and development of ART drug resistance after short-term treatment among patients attending the Comprehensive HIV Care Centre (CCC) of Coast Province General Hospital, Mombasa, Kenya. One hundred and fifty HIV-infected individuals receiving ART were consecutively recruited to participate in the study. After determination …

Iners Are More Conducive To The Occurrence Of Abnormal Vaginal Microflora, Hans Verstraelen, Rita Verhelst, Geert Claeys, Ellen De Backer, Marleen Temmerman, Mario Vaneechoutte

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa

Background: Despite their antimicrobial potential, vaginal lactobacilli often fail to retain dominance, resulting in overgrowth of the vagina by other bacteria, as observed with bacterial vaginosis. It remains elusive however to what extent interindividual differences in vaginal Lactobacillus community composition determine the stability of this microflora. In a prospective cohort of pregnant women we studied the stability of the normal vaginal microflora (assessed on Gram stain) as a function of the presence of the vaginal Lactobacillus index species (determined through culture and molecular analysis with tRFLP).

Results:From 100 consecutive Caucasian women vaginal swabs were obtained at mean gestational ages …

Manganese Flux Across The Blood-Brain Barrier, Robert A. Yokel Dec 2009

Manganese Flux Across The Blood-Brain Barrier, Robert A. Yokel

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Manganese (Mn) is essential for brain growth and metabolism, but in excess can be a neurotoxicant. The chemical form (species) of Mn influences its kinetics and toxicity. Significant Mn species entering the brain are the Mn2+ ion and Mn citrate which, along with Mn transferrin, enter the brain by carrier-mediated processes. Although the divalent metal transporter (DMT-1) was suggested to be a candidate for brain Mn uptake, brain Mn influx was not different in Belgrade rats, which do not express functional DMT-1, compared to controls. Brain Mn influx was not sodium dependent or dependent on ATP hydrolysis, but was …
