The Beacon Of Hope/University Of New Orleans Community Recovery Project: 2009, Department Of Planning And Urban Studies, University Of New Orleans

Planning and Urban Studies Reports and Presentations

An LDRF grant was awarded to develop a pilot surveying and mapping program in Gentilly. Without this generous grant, the current surveying and mapping project that is continuing to spread throughout Gentilly would not have been possible. This grant has allowed the Beacon of Hope to partner with The University of New Orleans to create the Beacon of Hope/University of New Orleans Community Recovery Project (BUCRP) to create a more systematic approach to creating an overall surveying and mapping process that could be applied more broadly across the City of New Orleans.

Between Diffusion And Distinctiveness In Globalization: U.S. Law Firms Go Glocal, Carole Silver, Nicole De Bruin Phelan, Mikaela Rabinowitz Jan 2009

Between Diffusion And Distinctiveness In Globalization: U.S. Law Firms Go Glocal, Carole Silver, Nicole De Bruin Phelan, Mikaela Rabinowitz

Articles by Maurer Faculty

There is widespread agreement that law firms have embraced globalization, but what this means and why it matters are subjects still cloaked with uncertainty. Do law firms follow the models and processes of globalization characteristic of other businesses? Or are law firms forced to take a different approach because of the nature of law and its basis in a particular national system? In this article, we consider these questions as they apply to U.S. law firms, and offer a new lens to interpret the role of globalization in the activities of law firms and their lawyers. We use data relating …

Introduction: Feminist Advocacy, Constitutions And Law, Penelope Andrews Jan 2009

Introduction: Feminist Advocacy, Constitutions And Law, Penelope Andrews

Articles & Chapters

The programs and projects of the last few decades of feminist advocacy have been applauded, resisted, andvilified. Despite these divergent responses, there is no doubt that in societies across the globe women’s voices in the legal and political realm are no longer muted. Organizing and lobbying on all five continents, aided and abetted by the liberating possibilities of the innovative communications technology, especially the internet, women advocates have created the discursive space in the political, legal, social, and economic realm to influence governmental policies, law and practice. Developments in the last few decades have illustrated the concerted efforts by women …

Historical Geography Of Yellagonga Regional Park, Western Australia, Susan Ujma Jan 2009

Historical Geography Of Yellagonga Regional Park, Western Australia, Susan Ujma

Theses : Honours

The principle aim of this study was to reconstruct the land use history of the Yellagonga Regional Park wetland landscape. Located approximately twenty kilometres north of Perth, covering about 1400 hectares, the Park lies within the North-West Corridor of the metropolitan area. This research, assisted by archival sources, demonstrates that prior to early European settlement the Yellagonga wetlands were quintessential summer hunting and gathering sites for the Nyoongar Aboriginal people. The wetlands were utilised for water, food gathering, hunting, corroborees and rituals that governed their tribal lives. Early European settlers, market gardeners, and later subdivision for urban development, have adversely …

Etude Comparee De L'Enseignement Des Langues Vivantes Etrangeres En France Et En Australie : Le Cas De L'Anglais En France Et Du Francais En Australie Occidentale Au Lycee, Elodie Mortet

Theses : Honours

The purpose of this thesis is to analyse French and Australian approaches to foreign language learning and teaching within their education systems through a comparison of English programmes for French high schools and French programmes for Western Australian high schools. The value and originality of this project lies in the absence of any previous study between the two countries in this field of research. It will be of interest to anyone involved in foreign language learning and teaching. This research is mainly based on official texts and publications (also available online) as well as on work by specialists in education …

Rhizomatic Encounters And Encountering Possibilities, Pamela Moss, Karen Falconer Al-Hindi Jan 2009

Rhizomatic Encounters And Encountering Possibilities, Pamela Moss, Karen Falconer Al-Hindi

Geography and Geology Faculty Publications

Many thanks to Joni Palmer, the panellists, and the participants in the Author Meets Critics session at the Association of American Geographers meeting (April 2008) where the conversation that we continue here began. We appreciate the gracious criticisms and are delighted with the authors‟ enthusiasm. Criticisms offered with such care nurture the larger intellectual project from which the book comes (see Schuurman and Pratt; Aufhauser ). We feel fortunate to be able to address some of the issues identified that we believe need more attention. We thank the editors of Thirdspace for the opportunity.

It may seem curious for editors …

Situating Grammar Instruction In The World Language Classroom: Four Content-Enriched Strategies, Todd A. Hernández Jan 2009

Situating Grammar Instruction In The World Language Classroom: Four Content-Enriched Strategies, Todd A. Hernández

Spanish Languages and Literatures Research and Publications

The role of grammar instruction in promoting communicative competence continues to be a controversial issue for the world language classroom teacher. Second language acquisition research suggests that critical to sustained progress in language use is a focus on form, which we define as attention to linguistic form in the context of performing a communicative task. We therefore offer here four content-enriched strategies for situating grammar in a communicative context: textual enhancement, input flood, structured input, and dictogloss. We present these tasks and activities within the framework of the Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century (SFLL, 2006) to …

The Language Of Law And The Practice Of Politics: Great Powers And The Rhetoric Of Self-Determination In The Cases Of Kosovo And South Ossetia, Christopher J. Borgen Jan 2009

The Language Of Law And The Practice Of Politics: Great Powers And The Rhetoric Of Self-Determination In The Cases Of Kosovo And South Ossetia, Christopher J. Borgen

Faculty Publications

If international law is all but irrelevant to international relations why do states spend so much time and effort justifying their actions under international law? The immediate reaction by many is to dismiss this as "cheap talk," a rhetorical fig leaf or simple bluster of little consequence. This Article aims to debunk the notion that the rhetoric surrounding international law is of little consequence. Rather than mere cheap talk, the rhetoric of international law is at times used by great powers (and other states) in an attempt to gain tactical, if not strategic, advantages.

This Article seeks to elucidate what …

Prevalence Of Vitamin D Insufficiency Among Breast Cancer Survivors, Kristen Poole Trukova Jan 2009

Prevalence Of Vitamin D Insufficiency Among Breast Cancer Survivors, Kristen Poole Trukova

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The objective of this study was to determine if vitamin D deficiency is a prevalent problem for female breast cancer survivors (BCS) who have completed treatment for breast cancer. Ninetynine breast cancer survivors and a control population of fifty-five women with no history of breast cancer participated in this study. Serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D concentrations were measured throughout 2007. Dietary and supplement intake of vitamin D was assessed by a food frequency questionnaire. Zip code of residence was used to evaluate potential for skin production of vitamin D. Vitamin D deficiency (<32ng/mL) was observed in 76 of 99 (77%) of BCS, and 51 of 55 (93%) of controls. Women taking vitamin D supplements were less likely to exhibit vitamin D deficiency, but supplementation did not guarantee sufficiency. Vitamin D deficiency appears to be prevalent among both groups. Vitamin D status should be routinely evaluated for all women as part of regular preventive care.

On S. Nutall And A. Mmembe, Eds. Johannesburg: The Elusive Metropolis, Sandy Marshall Jan 2009

On S. Nutall And A. Mmembe, Eds. Johannesburg: The Elusive Metropolis, Sandy Marshall

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

In their edited volume, Johannesburg: The Elusive Metropolis, Sarah Nuttall and Achille Mbembe, offer their readers a glimpse of contemporary Johannesburg from multiple vantage points, combining to create a singleness of vision that reveals a fractured and layered modern metropolis. However, the cohesiveness that binds this book should not be mistaken for theoretical fixity of the African metropolis. Recognizing that city forms "outpace the capacity of analysts to name them" (25), the editors of Johannesburg seek to unfix rather than fix the meanings of African modernity. As promised in the title, Johannesburg is depicted as elusive, uncontainable and …

Planting The Promised Landscape: Zionism, Nature, And Resistance In Israel/Palestine, Irus Braverman Jan 2009

Planting The Promised Landscape: Zionism, Nature, And Resistance In Israel/Palestine, Irus Braverman

Journal Articles

This article reveals the complex historical and cultural processes that have led to the symbiotic identification between pine trees and Jewish people in Israel/Palestine. It introduces three tree donation techniques used by Israel, then proceeds to discuss the meaning of nature in Israel, as well as the meaning of planting and rooting in the context of the Zionist project. The article concludes by reflecting on the ways that pine trees absent Palestinian presence and memory from the landscape, and explains how Palestinian acts of aggression toward these pine landscapes relate to the Israel/Palestine relationship.

The Memory Archive: Filmic Collaborations In Art And Anthropology, Alyssa Grossman, Selena Kimball Jan 2009

The Memory Archive: Filmic Collaborations In Art And Anthropology, Alyssa Grossman, Selena Kimball

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

This paper forms the space for dialogue between a social anthropologist (Grossman) and a visual artist (Kimball), who have been collaborating on installations and films throughout the past decade. Our most recent films, including Into the Field (2005), and Objects of Memory (in progress) are shot on location in Grossman’s fieldwork sites in Romania, and incorporate sequences of stop-motion animation by Kimball. These films explore and question the conventional boundaries between art and anthropology. In this article, we examine the process of filming collaboratively in the field, and discuss the challenges and transformations we each undergo through sharing the literal …

Farmers' Perceptions And Reactions To Changes In Grain Elevator Size And Location In Central Montana, Jessie June Reynolds Jan 2009

Farmers' Perceptions And Reactions To Changes In Grain Elevator Size And Location In Central Montana, Jessie June Reynolds

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In Central Montana, grain elevators serve as the primary market for wheat. What began in the 1910’s as numerous small grain elevators scattered at short intervals along the railroad has now been condensed to a few very large grain elevators at central points in the region, increasing their efficiency and reducing their costs as they can load larger trains in less time with fewer employees. For farmers, this often means reduced competition among elevators that buy grain and an increase in the distance they must transport their grain. Existing literature addressing agricultural markets and transportation costs typically employs a quantitative …

A Church Without Walls: Finding Community In Central Christian Church's Online Campus, Kayla Jo Gilmore Jan 2009

A Church Without Walls: Finding Community In Central Christian Church's Online Campus, Kayla Jo Gilmore

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Churches today are expanding beyond the physical walls of a church building. They are now online and interactive. This study explores the differences and similarities of communities of online churches and their physical church locations. It incorporates Stanley Fish's interpretive community theory by looking at Thomas Lindlof's common elements of a community and characteristics of an interpretive community. Using an ethnographic approach, survey and interviews were conducted to collect the data. Conclusions include determining that Central's online and physical church communities are in fact interpretive communities and that the online church is not replacing the physical church, but supplementing it.

Eating The Allegory, Nicola Kountoupes Jan 2009

Eating The Allegory, Nicola Kountoupes

Theses

This project explores imagery, sense memory, and performance through the intersection of an event and the objects within it and at its periphery. The archaeological dig provides the emotional and intellectual setting for discovery, history, and cultural identity, as well as an outlet for creation (of new memories) and desire (for knowledge). The performance elements of the show, including roles portrayed by audience and participants, provide the uncertain layout and improvisational aspect that relies on people coming together in a moment that is unique. The ephemeral nature of a moment lends itself to construction of memory, so that it will …

Impact Of The Iowa Reinstatement Of The Professional Teacher Librarian Requirement On School Libraries, Kelly Schaufenbuel Jan 2009

Impact Of The Iowa Reinstatement Of The Professional Teacher Librarian Requirement On School Libraries, Kelly Schaufenbuel

Graduate Research Papers

Due to a lapse in the Iowa Code from 1995 to 2006, Iowa school districts were not required to have a certified teacher librarian as part of the faculty. The purpose of this study is to determine the effects on professional teacher librarian staffing in Iowa schools from legislation passed in 2006 which requires every Iowa school district to employ a properly licensed teacher librarian to work with students, teachers, and staff; to provide instruction; and to direct the school library program. The data used for this study was extracted from the annual State Library of Iowa School Library Survey, …

Reading Instruction At The Secondary Level, Justified Or Unjustified? : Real Strategies For Content Area Reading Instruction With Applications For Social Studies, Bridgette Pohlman Andersen Jan 2009

Reading Instruction At The Secondary Level, Justified Or Unjustified? : Real Strategies For Content Area Reading Instruction With Applications For Social Studies, Bridgette Pohlman Andersen

Graduate Research Papers

Reading research conclusively asserts that reading is developmental in nature and requires explicit instruction beyond the elementary years. However, secondary education is dominated by content area curricula, leaving little instructional time for literacy. Standardized assessments reveal that middle and high school students' reading comprehension scores remain stagnant, yet society's literacy demands have increased. In order for students to become independent learners and productive citizens, reading comprehension strategies need to be embedded in existing classroom practices. Research-based practices for comprehension that can be used before, during and after reading are presented. A professional development session, covering two years, is included that …
