A Theory Of Cultural Glocality, Sarah Elizabeth Fernandez Jan 2009

A Theory Of Cultural Glocality, Sarah Elizabeth Fernandez

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A Theory of Cultural Glocality shows how globalization can be salvaged from the negativity that often surrounds it. Globalization has been the target of criticism that claims globalization is pushed on cultures and in the process is destroying local cultures. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the limitations of globalization critics and show that it is not a negative force, that there is a healthy form of globalization. Therefore, globalization does not have to be considered disastrous for local cultures. Glocalizing provides cultures with a way to balance the local and the global in a healthy way where …

Geografía Social De Zonas Críticas En México Su Contexto Económico Político: 1982-2005, Jose Antonio Roldan Amaro, Gabriel Saucedo Arteaga, Marsela Alvarez Izazaga, Richard Meindl, Cynthia Thompson, Tremaine Gregory

Peer Reviewed Articles

Theorizing And Generalizing About Risk Assessment And Regulation Through Comparative Nested Analysis Of Representative Cases, Jonathan B. Wiener, Brendon Swedlow, Denise Kall, Zheng Zhou, James K. Hammitt

Faculty Scholarship

This article provides a framework and offers strategies for theorizing and generalizing about risk assessment and regulation developed in the context of an on-going comparative study of regulatory behavior. Construction of a universe of nearly 3,000 risks and study of a random sample of 100 of these risks allowed us to estimate relative U.S. and European regulatory precaution over a thirty-five-year period. Comparative nested analysis of cases selected from this universe of ecological, health, safety, and other risks or its eighteen categories or ninety-two subcategories of risk sources or causes will allow theory-testing and -building and many further descriptive and …

Mr. Presidential Candidate: Whom Would You Nominate?, Stuart M. Benjamin, Mitu Gulati Jan 2009

Mr. Presidential Candidate: Whom Would You Nominate?, Stuart M. Benjamin, Mitu Gulati

Faculty Scholarship

Presidential candidates compete on multiple fronts for votes. Who is more likeable? Who will negotiate more effectively with allies and adversaries? Who has the better vice-presidential running mate? Who will make better appointments to the Supreme Court and the cabinet? This last question is often discussed long before the inauguration, for the impact of a secretary of state or a Supreme Court justice can be tremendous. Despite the importance of such appointments, we do not expect candidates to compete on naming the better slates of nominees. For the candidates themselves, avoiding competition over nominees in the pre-election context has personal …

Homeless But Not Hopeless: How The Tibetan Constitution Governs A People In Exile, Tsering Kheyap Jan 2009

Homeless But Not Hopeless: How The Tibetan Constitution Governs A People In Exile, Tsering Kheyap

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

In 1991, the Tibetan Government in Exile adopted the Tibetan Constitution. This is a living document that is widely recognized by the Tibetan community inside Tibet and those living in exile. Since its adoption, it has been amended eleven times and successfully provides for the democratic elections of exile leaders.

This Note argues that formal and informal international recognition of the importance and potential value of this document can help secure environmental and political stability, effective communication and democratic development throughout the region. In order for the Tibetan Constitution to achieve international acceptance as the legitimate governing document of the …

Muddy Waters: Congressional Consent And The Great Lakes - St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact, Sonya F. Palay Jan 2009

Muddy Waters: Congressional Consent And The Great Lakes - St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact, Sonya F. Palay

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

After nearly a century of negotiations among the Great Lakes states, tribes, and provinces, a promising new agreement was recently ratified by the parties and recognized by Congress, this is the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact. Interstate compacts, may serve as a particularly useful tool for solving regional environmental problems, which the federal government lacks the interest to resolve. However, due to constitutional strictures, interstate compacts are not binding unless Congress grants consent to the compact. This Note focuses on the recent Great Lakes Compact as a means to examine the current state of the law surrounding …

Federal Criminal Appeals: A Brief Empirical Perspective, Michael Heise Jan 2009

Federal Criminal Appeals: A Brief Empirical Perspective, Michael Heise

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Although few dispute the appellate process's centrality to justice systems, especially in the criminal context, debates over rationales supporting the appellate process's vaunted status in adjudication systems persist. Clearly, it is difficult to overestimate error correction as a justification for an appellate system. Of course, other rationales, such as a desire for lawmaking and legitimacy, also support the inclusion of a mechanism for appellate review in an adjudication system.

Though comparative latecomers, appellate courts are now ubiquitous in the American legal landscape—appellate review exists in state and federal systems for criminal convictions. Despite general agreement and widespread understanding that access …

A New Generation Of Goals For Technology Education, John M. Ritz Jan 2009

A New Generation Of Goals For Technology Education, John M. Ritz

STEMPS Faculty Publications

[Introduction, First paragraph]

To develop meaningful instructional programs for technology education, goals need to be in place to direct the outcomes of curriculum development and teaching. Goals are program terminal outcomes that focus curriculum writers or teachers who structure content for learners. Goals provide direction so content can be delivered for long-term impact to students who study the subject. They go beyond everyday teaching objectives; they are directed at long-term learning and programmatic outcomes.

Caregiver Religiosity, Spirituality, And Positive Emotion As Predictors Of Psychological Well-Being In Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Patients, Andrea Beth Weller Jan 2009

Caregiver Religiosity, Spirituality, And Positive Emotion As Predictors Of Psychological Well-Being In Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Patients, Andrea Beth Weller

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that results in degeneration of motor neurons of the cerebral cortex, the brainstem, and the spinal cord. Also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, ALS has no conclusive etiology and no known cure. The disease is ultimately fatal within approximately 3 to 5 years and robs individuals of all physical functions while leaving their intellectual capacity and personalities intact. Therefore, patients’ quality of life (QOL) becomes increasingly important in their lives and in the lives of their caregivers. Patients with ALS and their caregivers face a number of psychological, psychosocial, and existential …

Macroscopic Traffic Safety Analysis Based On Trip Generation Characteristics, Chowdhury Siddiqui Jan 2009

Macroscopic Traffic Safety Analysis Based On Trip Generation Characteristics, Chowdhury Siddiqui

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent research has shown that incorporating roadway safety in transportation planning has been considered one of the active approaches to improve safety. Aggregate level analysis for predicting crash frequencies had been contemplated to be an important step in this process. As seen from the previous studies various categories of predictors at macro level (census blocks, traffic analysis zones, census tracts, wards, counties and states) have been exhausted to find appropriate correlation with crashes. This study contributes to this ongoing macro level road safety research by investigating various trip productions and attractions along with roadway characteristics within traffic analysis zones (TAZs) …

She’S Hungarious So She’S Mexican But She’S Most Likely Indian, Jung-Eun Janie Lee Jan 2009

She’S Hungarious So She’S Mexican But She’S Most Likely Indian, Jung-Eun Janie Lee

English & Linguistics Articles

Schools in California have become increasingly diverse and the demographic composition of school populations has become heterogeneous in the language, nationality, and ethnicity of students. Using ethnographic and interactional analysis, the present article examines how California youth employ a variety of concepts associated with ethnicity to classify themselves and others. For youth who have peers from multiple national, ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds, the criteria of citizenship, national origin, language, and phenotype are negotiated interactionally for ethnic labeling. The article further suggests that ethnicity is not a simple category, but rather a concept that youth in a multiethnic context actively construct …

Scale Dependent Genetic Structure Of Idaho Giant Salamanders (Dicamptodon Aterrimus) In Stream Networks, Lindy Beth Mullen Jan 2009

Scale Dependent Genetic Structure Of Idaho Giant Salamanders (Dicamptodon Aterrimus) In Stream Networks, Lindy Beth Mullen

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Stream network structure constrains population processes of freshwater organisms, with individual, population and community level consequences. This consistent structure provides a framework in which examination of life-history influences on population genetic structure may provide general insight. I examined how stream network structure affects gene flow and genetic structure of the facultatively paedomorphic Idaho Giant salamander, Dicamptodon aterrimus in Idaho and Montana, USA. I used microsatellite data to test population structure models by (i) examining hierarchical partitioning of genetic variation in stream networks and (ii) testing for genetic isolation by distance along stream corridors versus overland pathways. Replicated sampling of streams …

A Spatial Analysis Of 24hl1085: A Prehistoric Site In The Bear's Paw Mountains, Jessica Jo Bush Jan 2009

A Spatial Analysis Of 24hl1085: A Prehistoric Site In The Bear's Paw Mountains, Jessica Jo Bush

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This thesis is a spatial analysis of 24HL1085 and attempts to discern the use areas of two prehistoric components, Late Archaic and Late Prehistoric, through the identification of spatial patterns created by the excavated lithics, faunal remains, and fire cracked rock (FCR). I also wanted to show that understanding the spatial layout of FCR is just as important as understanding the spatial layout of lithics and faunal remains. In order to complete this analysis the three ring model developed by Stevenson (1985) was adapted and combined with the trend surface analysis created by Hodder and Orton (1976). Theory behind this …
