A Productive Decade Of Andragogy's History And Philosophy 2000-2009, John Henschke Jan 2009

A Productive Decade Of Andragogy's History And Philosophy 2000-2009, John Henschke

Adult Education Faculty Works

With the foundation of andragogy having been laid, there was a serious attempt at investigating its value. Some felt that a broad scope was established in the practice to support growth in learners, with any mention of adult learning needing to include andragogy. Others perceived that andragogy produced unproductive debates along a binary path, with its being too caught up in individualization, the politics of exclusion, conformity, and de-contextualizing adult learning. However, some research revealed numerous dimensions of andragogy. The connection with distance learning became very strong and solid. New applications of andragogy were spawned into foreign language learning, internet …

Comparison Of Morphological And Biological Control Of Exchange With Transient Storage Zones In A Field-Scale Flume, C. Orr, J. Clark, Peter Wilcock, J. Finlay, M. Doyle Jan 2009

Comparison Of Morphological And Biological Control Of Exchange With Transient Storage Zones In A Field-Scale Flume, C. Orr, J. Clark, Peter Wilcock, J. Finlay, M. Doyle

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

To determine how differences in geomorphologic setting influence spatial heterogeneity in transport and uptake of limiting nutrients, we investigated reach-scale interactions between porous bed material textures, bed morphology, transient storage, and nutrient retention in a field-scale flume (84 m × 2.75 m). Conservative salt tracer and soluble reactive phosphorous additions were used to quantify effects of plane bed and alternate bar morphologies, and clean gravel versus sandy gravel bed texture on reach-scale nutrient retention and transient storage. We conducted experiments under light and dark conditions to clarify the role of benthic production on surface-subsurface hydrologic interactions and the relative influence …

Locating Community, Memory And Meaning-Making In The Performative Gap: An Experiment In Aesthetics, Autoethnography, And The Ethic Of The Unfinished, Rebecca M. Kennerly Jan 2009

Locating Community, Memory And Meaning-Making In The Performative Gap: An Experiment In Aesthetics, Autoethnography, And The Ethic Of The Unfinished, Rebecca M. Kennerly

Iowa Journal of Communication

I perform here a complex triangulation of shifting centers of geography, intellect, and memory as I investigate the practice of marking sites of death on the road with a shrine. This essay introduces a close-to-the-bone layer of sound/experience that emerged while in-field and in memory, as I risk revealing what Pollock (2006) calls "going under," a process which "folds back on the researcher-subject, catching her in . . . processes of transformation" (pp.327-328). Following Bowman (2002), I become "lost in my own back-yard" (p.349), as I chase (listen for) the spectral voices of the dead. Accidentally on purpose, my work …

A Plotless Density Estimator Based On The Asymptotic Limit Of Ordered Distance Estimation Values, Barry Kronenfeld Jan 2009

A Plotless Density Estimator Based On The Asymptotic Limit Of Ordered Distance Estimation Values, Barry Kronenfeld

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

Estimation of tree density from point-tree distances is an attractive option for quick inventory of new sites, but estimators that are unbiased in clustered and dispersed situations have not been found. Noting that bias of an estimator derived from distances to the kth nearest neighbor from a random point tends to decrease with increasing k, a method is proposed for estimating the limit of an asymptotic function through a set of ordered distance estimators. A standard asymptotic model is derived from the limiting case of a clustered distribution. The proposed estimator is evaluated against 13 types of simulated generating processes, …

The Legal Regime For The Arctic Ocean, Christopher C. Joyner Jan 2009

The Legal Regime For The Arctic Ocean, Christopher C. Joyner

Florida State University Journal of Transnational Law & Policy

With Arctic sea ice melting at rates faster than ever before, global climate change is opening up the polar region to increased navigation, exploration, and exploitation. The 'Arctic eight" nations have ignited a new competition for control of the trade routes and access to the rich deposits of resources that governments speculate might lie beneath the ice. In this article, the author explores the framework for a legal regime in the Arctic, identifying and critically assessing the agreements that govern the space, with the express intent of relating how they legally impact on human activities in the Arctic Ocean. It …

Protection Of Languages And Self-Expressions Under Islamic Law, Liaquat Ali Khan Jan 2009

Protection Of Languages And Self-Expressions Under Islamic Law, Liaquat Ali Khan

Florida State University Journal of Transnational Law & Policy

Islamic law recognizes two distinct divine rights, one applying to speech communities and the other to individuals. The divine right to language allows each speech community to preserve and celebrate its native language free of coercion and disrespect from other speech communities. Native languages are the assets of speech communities. Islamic law prohibits coercive degradation of native languages while at the same time it interposes no barriers in learning other languages. Closely related to the right to language is the divine right to individual self-expression or self-determination. Each human being is unique because God, the Master-Artist, shapes each human being …

What Is New On The Animal Protection Radar?, John Hadidian Jan 2009

What Is New On The Animal Protection Radar?, John Hadidian

Animal Welfare Collection

American attitudes toward wildlife have often been cast as falling within an urban/rural dichotomy that separates protectionist from utilitarian value orientations. Long held as a major challenge to wildlife managers the urban/rural dichotomy may be yielding to change as new attitude and value orientations arise from direct conflicts people have with wild animals as well as from a generational disenfranchisement of young people who lack direct experience with the outdoors. Both may loom as larger challenges for the future and shift the focus of once opposing interests more toward efforts to establish cooperation. Currently, much of the disagreement over wildlife …

Punishment For Noncompliance And Reward For Compliance: A Comparison Of Japanese And American Workers, Emiko Kobayashi, Harold R. Kerbo Jan 2009

Punishment For Noncompliance And Reward For Compliance: A Comparison Of Japanese And American Workers, Emiko Kobayashi, Harold R. Kerbo

Social Sciences

In a recent series of articles, Kobayashi and Grasmick have applied an extended model of deterrence and rational decision-making to a comparative study of Japanese and American workers’ violation of workplace rules. These previous studies draw from control theory in the sociological study of deviance and focus on the costs of noncompliance. The present paper, building on differential association/social learning theory, adds a new dimension—the rewards of compliance—to this comparative project. In workplace settings, decisions by workers to comply or not comply with rules are based on perceptions of punishment associated with noncompliance and on perceptions of rewards associated with …

Discussing Dialogue: Perspectives On The Value Of Science Dialogue Events That Do Not Inform Policy, Sarah Davies, Ellen Mccallie, Elin Simonsson, Jane L. Lehr, Sally Duensing Jan 2009

Discussing Dialogue: Perspectives On The Value Of Science Dialogue Events That Do Not Inform Policy, Sarah Davies, Ellen Mccallie, Elin Simonsson, Jane L. Lehr, Sally Duensing

Ethnic Studies

While theoretical work and empirical research have examined science policyinforming “dialogue events,” dialogue events that do not seek to inform public policy are under-theorized and under-researched, even though they are common and growing in popularity in the UK. We describe how, from a critical perspective, it may initially appear that such events cannot be justified without returning to the deficit model. But with this paper, we seek to open up a discussion about these non policy-informing events by arguing that there are in fact further ways to understand and frame them. We deliberately draw on different literatures and seek to …

An Assessment Of The Vulnerablity Of Coastal Stone Monuments In Ireland, Jason Bolton Jan 2009

An Assessment Of The Vulnerablity Of Coastal Stone Monuments In Ireland, Jason Bolton

Doctoral

The overall aim of this research is to explore, evaluate, compare and contrast the vulnerability to physical decay and deterioration of archaeological and architectural stone monuments located along the Irish coast, with those found in unpolluted inland environments. The usefulness of the coast and rivers for the exploitation of natural resources, trade and communications has resulted in the historic development of towns, villages, individual buildings, monuments, structures and complexes along the coastlines of the world. The legacy of Irish archaeological monuments and historic buildings built in stone and found in close proximity to the coast ranges from the earliest tombs …

A Survey Of Apomixis And Ploidy Levels Among Poa L. (Poaceae) Using Flow Cytometry, Alicia Michelle Kelley, Paul G. Johnson, Blair L. Waldron, Michael D. Peel

CWEL Publications

Poa is a complex genus taxonomically and genetically. As a result, relatively little information exists for this economically important genus with regards to reproductive mode and variability in chromosome number. We examined apomixis frequency and ploidy levels in 83 Poa accessions representing 33 species from the National Plant Germplasm System using flow cytometric techniques. In reproductive mode analysis, we analyzed at least three preparations of 50 seeds each from the accessions. In ploidy level analysis, at least three plants of each accession were analyzed. Sixty percent of the species had at least one apomictic or facultative apomictic accession; 40% were …
