Review Of The Aesthetics Of Resistance, By Peter Weiss, Lars Gustaf Andersson

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Peter Weiss (born 1916 in Germany, dead 1982 in Sweden) has a truly cosmopolitan biography. As the son of a Jewish manufacturer of Hungarian descent and a Swiss actress Weiss had German as maternal tongue, but was in fact a Czech citizen, and lived his childhood and youth in Poland as well as in Germany and Great Britain. In 1939 he migrated to Sweden - following his parents - and finally became a Swedish citizen in 1946. He wrote several books in Swedish, and was also, during the 1950s, active as an experimental filmmaker in Stockholm, acknowledged by …

Editor's Introduction, Alan Clinton, John Sundholm

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

This special issue of Reconstruction began with a feeling of both exhaustion and excitement. The exhaustion concerned our feeling that there has been an excessive amount of theorizing about the historical avant-garde that takes rather traditional forms. The most exciting prospect for us, by contrast, was the feeling that marginalized tradition of the “critical avant-garde" as practiced by figures such as Jacques Derrida, Roland Barthes, and Walter Benjamin is now, more than ever, ready for a sustained exploration. This issue intends to be a small part of that exploration, one that realizes that the lessons of the vanguard …

Differing Effects: The Resource Curse In Seperatist Conflicts, W. Scott Miller Apr 2009

Differing Effects: The Resource Curse In Seperatist Conflicts, W. Scott Miller

Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research

Despite considerable research on the relationship between natural resources and civil wars, minimal investigation has been conducted regarding the effects on separatist conflicts. Previous literature in the field has recognized seemingly different effects, but none have focused on these differences. Using 10 cases, this study fills the gap in the research. The observable results support the idea that the potential effects are unique to separatist conflicts and not civil war in general. Such results demonstrate the variety of mechanisms through which a variable can generate observable changes.

Visual Impairment And Eye Care Among Older Americans: Secondary Analysis Of The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (Brfss), Amy L. Freeland

Dissertations

The aim of this three-paper format dissertation is to explore three topics relevant to public health and vision loss. The three papers are independent studies, yet build upon each other by first describing the population of people aged 40 years and older in the United States in terms of visual impairment, diagnosed eye disease/injury, and their use of eye care, and then next exploring the factors that influence eye care use for both the general population and the subpopulation of people with diagnosed diabetes. The first paper provides a state-level examination of the characteristics of people aged 40 years and …

Cognitive And Social Help Giving In Online Teaching: An Exploratory Study, Joan Whipp, Rebecca A. Lorentz

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

While literature suggests that college students may be less reluctant to seek help in online rather than traditional courses, little is known about how online instructors give help in ways that lead to increased student help seeking and academic success. In this study, we used theories and research on learning assistance and scaffolding, teacher immediacy, social presence, and academic help seeking to explore through a cross-case study design how three online instructors differed in their use of cognitive and social supports and how those differences related to student perceptions of support, help seeking, and performance. Primary data sources included all …

Need For International Business Concepts In The Curriculum, David Seeley Jr. Apr 2009

Need For International Business Concepts In The Curriculum, David Seeley Jr.

International Journal for Business Education

With the continued increase in international business, business education has an obligation to reflect this trend. There are two methods for incorporating international business concepts into the curriculum: infusion and creation. Ideally, this obligation would be completed with a standalone course in international business. However, it can also be accomplished through incorporating international business concepts into current curriculum. Business programs need to include international aspects into the curriculum to help the students understand the economy in which they live.

The Nutrition Elite: Do Only The Highest Levels Of Caloric Knowledge, Obesity Knowledge, And Motivation Matter In Processing Nutrition Ad Claims And Disclosures?, J. Craig Andrews, Richard G. Netemeyer, Scot Burton Apr 2009

The Nutrition Elite: Do Only The Highest Levels Of Caloric Knowledge, Obesity Knowledge, And Motivation Matter In Processing Nutrition Ad Claims And Disclosures?, J. Craig Andrews, Richard G. Netemeyer, Scot Burton

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

This study examines the role of the highest levels of caloric knowledge, obesity consequences knowledge, and motivation to search for nutrition information in the processing of relative nutrient content claims in advertisements, such as “half the calories” or “half the fat,” for products relatively high in total calorie levels. After controlling for the impact of demographics, dietary habits, body mass index, relative ad claims and disclosures, perceived weight gain risk, and other variables, the authors find curvilinear (quadratic) effects for caloric knowledge, obesity consequences knowledge, and motivation to search for nutrition information on intent to buy an advertised, high-calorie snack …

Enslaved Revolutionaries : Constitutional Rhetoric Of Eighteenth-Century Irish And American Patriots, Jacob Keith Johnson Apr 2009

Enslaved Revolutionaries : Constitutional Rhetoric Of Eighteenth-Century Irish And American Patriots, Jacob Keith Johnson

Honors Theses

Following years of escalating tension, the thirteen American colonies crossed the threshold over to armed revolt, declaring a war for independence from the British in 1776. Restrictions placed upon the colonies and failed attempts at a compromise drove American patriots to initiate and execute a republican revolution that redefined their status from subsidiary colonies to independent nation. During this time, Ireland found itself in a unique situation, in an ambiguous status stuck between colony and nation. Desires for greater participation in Britain’s mercantilist economy and demand for Ireland’s legislative independence led to a revolutionary period orchestrated by an opposition group …

It's All Happening At The Zoo: Children's Environmental Learning After School, Jason A. Douglas, Cindi Katz Apr 2009

It's All Happening At The Zoo: Children's Environmental Learning After School, Jason A. Douglas, Cindi Katz

Publications and Research

Pairing dynamic out-of-school-time (OST) programs with zoos can encourage young people's relationships with and sense of responsibility for animals and the environment. The project presented in this article, Animal Rescuers, gave the authors the opportunity to examine how such a pairing can work. OST programs enable learning in settings that are generally unavailable during school time (Honig & McDonald, 2005). They provide space for collaboration among students, teachers, and others such as program visitors or outside educators. Taking advantage of the flexibility, location, and educational playfulness of an OST setting, the authors worked intensively with a small number of 10-12-year-old …
