The Effects Of Grouping And Curriculum On The Self-Concept Of Gifted Children, Valerie A. Beaman Jun 2009

The Effects Of Grouping And Curriculum On The Self-Concept Of Gifted Children, Valerie A. Beaman

Theses

The Big-Fish-Little-Pond Effect predicts gifted students educated in heterogeneous settings develop higher academic self-concept than those educated in homogeneous settings. Academic self-concept of students in multi-age classroom using the Primary Years International Baccalaureate Program (Primary IB) was compared to academic self-concept of students in single-aged classroom learning traditional curriculum. Data were collected (N=65) on third and fourth-graders using the Self-Description Questionaire (Marsh, 1992). It was hypothesized that gifted and non-gifted students educated in multi-age classrooms taught with Primary IB have higher academic self-concept than children in single age classrooms. Results of 2x2 ANOVA indicated no significant differences between gifted and …

Bringing Legal Education To The Canadian Arctic: The Development Of The Akitsiraq Law School And The Challenges For Providing Library Services To A Nontraditional Law School, Serena Ableson

International Journal of Legal Information

Libraries have a unique role to play in the delivery of information and educational opportunities for people in the Canadian north or in other isolated communities. Libraries must build partnerships and cooperative agreements to help remove barriers to information. As the librarian for the Akitsiraq Law School program, I wore many different hats in terms of responsibilities and work duties, and I was constantly challenged to think outside the box and to come up with innovative solutions to common library service issues.

Public Service Television Policy And National Development In Morocco, Bouziane Zaid Jun 2009

Public Service Television Policy And National Development In Morocco, Bouziane Zaid

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Like many developing countries, and for many years, Morocco has sought the help of television to disseminate development ideas to its citizens. The Moroccan government has recently given policy considerations to regulate the use of television and radio airwaves as important outside sources for promoting its development objectives. The newly assigned importance of television in Moroccan developmental policies makes a study on the relationship between television and development interesting and crucial. This study investigates the extent to which the Moroccan public service television meets the challenges of effectively contributing to the development objectives of the nation. It focuses on the …

Underwriting In The Non-Group Health Insurance Market: The Fundamentals, Kathryn Linehan Jun 2009

Underwriting In The Non-Group Health Insurance Market: The Fundamentals, Kathryn Linehan

National Health Policy Forum

Non-group health insurance is coverage that individuals purchase on their own rather than as part of a group. Most states currently permit non-group insurers to underwrite, a process whereby an insurer assesses the health and other characteristics of individuals to determine their likely utilization of health services or risk; insurers then use this assessment to determine whether they will offer coverage and the premium they will charge. Policymakers have identified underwriting and related practices in non-group markets as a target for reform to enable broader access for the currently uninsured. This publication reviews the characteristics of non-group markets and insurers' …

The Relationship Between Liver Fat Content And Unenhanced Computed Tomography, Karen Shoebotham Jun 2009

The Relationship Between Liver Fat Content And Unenhanced Computed Tomography, Karen Shoebotham

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The purpose of this study was to chart unenhanced CT liver and spleen attenuation data on patients with normal and fatty livers to demonstrate a relationship between liver fat content and attenuation on unenhanced CT using MR chemical shift imaging as a reference standard. Retrospective data was gathered on 116 patients from NYU Tisch Hospital who had undergone both an unenhanced CT and MR opposed-phase imaging of the liver within 2 months. MR fat fraction (MR FF) was calculated using signal decrease on in]phase and opposed]phase imaging, with a cutoff of 0.2 considered significant fatty infiltration. Three CT liver attenuation …

Failure To Replicate A Genetic Association May Provide Important Clues About Genetic Architecture, Casey S. Greene, Nadia M. Penrod, Scott M. Williams, Jason H. Moore

Dartmouth Scholarship

Replication has become the gold standard for assessing statistical results from genome-wide association studies. Unfortunately this replication requirement may cause real genetic effects to be missed. A real result can fail to replicate for numerous reasons including inadequate sample size or variability in phenotype definitions across independent samples. In genome-wide association studies the allele frequencies of polymorphisms may differ due to sampling error or population differences. We hypothesize that some statistically significant independent genetic effects may fail to replicate in an independent dataset when allele frequencies differ and the functional polymorphism interacts with one or more other functional polymorphisms. To …

Demography And Language Competition, Anne Kandler Jun 2009

Demography And Language Competition, Anne Kandler

Human Biology

Attempts to describe language competition and extinction in a mathematical way have enjoyed increased popularity recently. In this paper I review recent modeling approaches and, based on these findings, propose a model of reaction-diffusion type. I analyze the dynamics of interactions of a population with two monolingual groups and a group that is bilingual in these two languages. The results show that demographic factors, such as population growth or population dispersal, play an important role in the competition dynamic. Furthermore, I consider the impact of two strategies for language maintenance: adjusting the status of the endangered language and adjusting the …

Inferring Past Demography Using Spatially Explicit Population Genetic Models, Nicolas Ray, Laurent Excoffier Jun 2009

Inferring Past Demography Using Spatially Explicit Population Genetic Models, Nicolas Ray, Laurent Excoffier

Human Biology

Inferring the past demography of human populations has been classically approached through data from the archaeological record but more recently by the use of genetic data from contemporary samples. Building realistic demographic models at the continental scale is a necessary step toward the improvement of current genomic methods aimed at fi nding genes under selection. In light of recent advances in Bayesian statistical inference, we discuss here the importance of considering spatially explicit approaches for modeling population expansion and dispersal. Neutral processes, such as the surfi ng phenomenon, that occur at the front of a range expansion may indeed mimic …

Kinship, Marriage, And The Genetics Of Past Human Dispersals, R Alexander Bentley, Robert H. Layton, Jamshid Tehrani Jun 2009

Kinship, Marriage, And The Genetics Of Past Human Dispersals, R Alexander Bentley, Robert H. Layton, Jamshid Tehrani

Human Biology

The extent to which colonizing farmer populations have overwhelmed or “replaced” indigenous forager populations, as opposed to having intermarried with them, has been widely debated. Indigenous-colonist “admixture” is often represented in genetic models as a single parameter that, although parsimonious and simple, is incongruous with the sex-specifi c nature of mtDNA and Y-chromosome data. To help interpret genetic patterns, we can construct useful null hypotheses about the generalized migration history of females (mtDNA) as opposed to males (Y chromosome), which differ signifi cantly in almost every ethnographically known society. We seek to integrate ethnographic knowledge into models that incorporate new …

The Burden Of Fetching Water: Using Caloric Expenditure As An Indicator Of Access To Safe Drinking Water—A Case Study From Xieng Khouang Province, Lao Pdr, Jeff La Frenierre Jun 2009

The Burden Of Fetching Water: Using Caloric Expenditure As An Indicator Of Access To Safe Drinking Water—A Case Study From Xieng Khouang Province, Lao Pdr, Jeff La Frenierre

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Millennium Development Goals measure ‘access to improved drinking water’ using an indicator that defines access as the presence of an improved water source within 1 kilometer of a person’s dwelling. This purely linear measurement has significant shortcomings, including a lack of consideration for the difficulty of the terrain being traversed and the weight of the loads being carried. This paper examines in detail the human energy costs associated with fetching water, first using two Lao villages as case studies, then applying a predictive energy expenditure model to measure the potential caloric effect of variations in the age and gender …

Weathering The Storm: Climate Change, Vulnerability, And Adaptation In Bangladesh, Justin Guay Jun 2009

Weathering The Storm: Climate Change, Vulnerability, And Adaptation In Bangladesh, Justin Guay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The world is guaranteed a certain level of climate change due to the emissions already released into the atmosphere. Therefore, adaptation to climate change is necessary. Increases in diarrheal disease and malnutrition due to climate change are analyzed for Bangladesh. Relative risks determined by the World Health Organization, estimates obtained from agricultural models, and migration estimates are utilized to determine the costs associated with each of these diseases, as well as reductions in rice production and increases in urban migration. It is found that climate change will create additional costs for treating each of these diseases that equal .05% of …

Climate And Demography In Early Prehistory: Using Calibrated 14c Dates As Population Proxies, Felix Riede Jun 2009

Climate And Demography In Early Prehistory: Using Calibrated 14c Dates As Population Proxies, Felix Riede

Human Biology

Although difficult to estimate for prehistoric hunter-gatherer populations, demographic variables—population size, density, and the connectedness of demes—are critical for a better understanding of the processes of material culture change, especially in deep prehistory. Demography is the middle-range link between climatic changes and both biological and cultural evolutionary trajectories of human populations. Much of human material culture functions as a buffer against climatic changes, and the study of prehistoric population dynamics, estimated through changing frequencies of calibrated radiocarbon dates, therefore affords insights into how effectively such buffers operated and when they failed. In reviewing a number of case studies (Mesolithic Ireland, …

Adiantum Viridimontanum, Aspidotis Densa, Minuartia Marcescens, And Symphyotrichum Rhiannon: Additional Serpentine Endemics From Eastern North America, Tanner Harris, Nishanta Rajakaruna Jun 2009

Adiantum Viridimontanum, Aspidotis Densa, Minuartia Marcescens, And Symphyotrichum Rhiannon: Additional Serpentine Endemics From Eastern North America, Tanner Harris, Nishanta Rajakaruna

Biological Sciences

Serpentine outcrops around the world are known to harbor disproportionately high rates of plant endemism. Remarkable cases of serpentine endemism occur in New Caledonia and Cuba, with 3178 and 920 endemic taxa, respectively, found solely on serpentine. Despite the patchy occurrence of serpentine in eastern North America from Québec and Newfoundland south to Alabama, only one taxon, Cerastium velutinum var. villosissimum, has been broadly recognized as a serpentine endemic for the region. Based on reports in the literature, we suggest that Adiantum viridimontanum, Minuartia marcescens, and Symphyotrichum rhiannon be considered endemic to serpentine soils from the east coast …
